Question about "library" folder

Sorry if this is dumb question, just got the computer yesterday. Anyway, I was snooping around in the library folder and I deleted some things in an attempt to free up some space, however I think that the things I deleted may have been important. I deleted "LaunchAgents", "Perl", "Python", and "Ruby". Can someone please shed some insight as to what these folders were for, and if they were important, how can I get them back.
Thank you

Everything in the System and Library folders are important for the system - you should never delete anything from them. In fact, you're asked for an admin password before you can delete them, for a good reason. You should do an Archive and Install of your system (or a Time Machine restore, if you have one) to get back to a good working system, otherwise you're liable to experience crashes and system failures.
Likewise, you shouldn't delete anything in your home folder's Library folder unless you understand what it is and know what the consequences are.

  • Question about font folder (user library)

I know there are system fonts you are not supposed to delete so that your computer operates. But is it okay to trash my font folder (in the user library) and bring over fonts off my external that I will use? I just want to make sure I am not deleting any vital fonts! Aren't those under the HD's font folder anyway? I am trying to trim down the number of fonts I have! Thanks.

Whew, that's what I thought. Thanks for confirming

  • Two quick questions about Library after moving beginning on a new computer

    Hi there,
I just moved from Windows to Mac, meaning I had to move my iTunes library from the old PC to my new MBA.
Just a couple of quick questions.
    1. When I started iTunes on my new Mac, in the preferences I directed the media folder to the folder with all my itunes music/podcasts etc, and then I imported the Library XML file.  Is this incorrect? Should I have imported a different file? Should I have used the itl file instead?
If so, should I delete the library and start again?  (if this is the case, please suggest the best way of doing this without affecting my media)
    - a kind of sub-question to this one:  some of the media files arent showing up in the iTunes library, but they are in the media folder on the ext HDD.  Is there a way I can find out which ones havent been recognized by iTunes?  Whats the best way of getting them in to my library?
    2. Pretty much half of my podcasts have not been loaded in the new iTunes.  The ones that havent were ones that I subscribed to on my iPhone, whereas the ones that show up in iTunes were ones I downloaded from iTunes.  When I connect my iPhone and sync it with iTunes, will those podcasts show up in iTunes?  Or is there a risk that they will be deleted from my iPhone?
    Cheers,

The .xml is lacking some information such as ratings, date added, and play count.  Using the .itl includes this information but cannot be imported using the method you did.
A complete library is everything in the iTunes folder.  By using the method you did you left the artwork behind in the artwork folder on the other machine.
Selecting the media folder in preferences does not get iTunes to recognize the media.  All it does is tell iTunes to start storing new media in that location.
Using the method I outlined nothing will be missed (with the exception of WMA) because you aren't rebuilding your library, you are using the one that already exists.
You don't have to re-copy everything as long as you get the stuff you missed and re-assemble it all as it was before except not on the Mac.

  • Question about documents folder in the "stacks"

Hey everyone. Here is my question.....In my documents folder that is in the stacks section there is one labeled iChats (Which of course stores my iChat conversations)
I would like to know if I can remove it from stacks but leave it on my hard drive? Basically, does everything I put in my documents folder in the HD show up in the stacks documents folder? Is there another place where I can put some of these items that I do not want to appear in the stacks?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Not that one, if you want iChat to save the chats

  • Quick beginner question about Applications folder

I have a really simple basic question: Can I organize my computer's applications folder anyway I want? I don't want to move anything out of the apps folder but I do want to group my apps by a few different categories using folders. I don't see why this would be a problem but I wanted to be sure before I fouled anything up. (Time Machine will be nice).

Create an Applications folder in your home folder and fill it with aliases to the real applications. You can organise these into sub-folders as you wish, without affecting the real applications. Moving the real applications can make updates fail. Different users can have different arrangements of applications.

  • Question about iTunes folder

I was going to copy iTunes onto my jump drive and I noticed a folder called "previous iTunes library" in my iTunes folder. What is this? Can I delete this?

You can delete it, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you have another backup of your old iTunes library files. iTunes makes this backup when you upgrade iTunes. If you decide to revert back to a previous version, you need the files in the "previous" folder.

  • Quick and easy question about creating folder

Total Mac newbie with basic question.
I want to put all my user manuals right on my desktop. All in a folder called user manuals. How would I do this? Smart folder? Just drag 'n drop? how can I quickly find them all?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi MarieBoyer
You can easily create a Folder on the desktop, by mouse click + contol to open the contextual menu, where you can choose New Folder, then give it a name.
Or, more easily still just drag one of the existing folders onto the desktop and use it.
As for finding all manual documents, they are just documents in general, and may not even have the word manual in their name, so searching by that criteria will in that case miss them. Otherwise you may have to search by each of their names, which would be rather tedious.
So I suggest, of the manuals that you know of or come across, drag them into your new Folder on the desktop as you find them.

  • Question about library appearance

so ive had this "problem" with itunes for a while now, although not a really big deal, it would be awesome to fix it.
basically when youre looking at your list of songs in the library, the background color is all white and not blue and white alternating lines. this has been annoying me for a while now and would be awesome if anyone knows how to fix this.
i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that doesnt fix it.
also is there any way to get the "recently played" and all those playlists back?
    thanks.

Livetype is better for titling and gives you more control.
A couple of things for consideration.
    1) the font that you use - don't use 'thin' or overly 'fussy' fonts.
    2) Reduce the opacity of the white - In FCP, don't use pure white, but slightly grey. Far better to do this in LT, where, in the 'attributes' tab of the 'inspector' tab, reduce the opacity to between 80% and 90%.
Oh and don't forget to render the effect and monitor through an external monitor (or a portable TV at the very least)

  • Inconsistent answers to question about "junk folder."

    first time answer:
    Go to Junk filter options
    General settings
The filter is enabled by default. You can set system-wide preferences that determine what happens to messages marked as junk. These settings will be used by all your email accounts (although some settings can be overridden in the account settings, as shown below). To access the preferences, click Tools | Options, select the Security panel and then select the Junk tab. Refers specifically to account's "Junk folder"
    second time answer:
Thunderbird does not use a Junk folder. If your email provider does you may need to subscribe to it if you have an IMAP account.

What exactly are you trying to do?
Thunderbird will not display a Junk folder until you go into Junk controls and set one up. The default setting for handling of junk in Thunderbird is to add a junk icon beside the message header and place the message in the Inbox.
    Tools-Account Settings-Junk Settings
Email providers usually have a Spam folder. You would need to log into your email account at your providers web mail page to manage those settings.

  • Question about Jre folder

    Hi,
After installing Java, I have a JRE folder under jdk1.5.0_03 directory,
and another folder jre1.5.0_03 under java directory.
Can someone please tell me the different between these two folders? Which one is the run-time jre? Thanks in advance.

The differences are explained in the Installation Instructions for the product that you installed - and didn't read the instructions :)
Here is the explanation (and I recommend you back up and read the instructions, there is other useful information there.)
"Private vs. public JRE - Installing the JDK installs a private J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) and optionally a public copy. The private JRE is required to run the tools included with the JDK. It has no registry settings and is contained entirely in a jre directory (typically at C:\Program Files\jdk1.5.0\jre) whose location is known only to the JDK. On the other hand, the public JRE can be used by other Java applications, is contained outside the JDK (typically at C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0), is registered with the Windows registry (at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft), can be removed using Add/Remove Programs, might or might not be registered with browsers, and might or might not have java.exe copied to the Windows system directory (making it the default system Java platform or not). • Question about download folder

Hey all, my download folder in the dock at the bottom is not showing the most recent, but the first file that I downloaded ever on my mac, so I cant see if theres a download in progress just by gl;ancing at it. Does anyone have a fix?

I believe the appropriate setting for the Downloads folder in the Dock is to +Sort by *Date Added*+. Right (Control) click on the folder's icon in the Dock. For +Sort By+, make sure the check mark is by +Date Added+. Then, the stack listing should have the most recently downloaded file at the top of the list.

  • Question about this folder ....

What is this folder ? C:\Users\**\Pictures\Wallpapers\iPod Photo Cache
Is folder contains all the pictures I ever took with my iphone (even deleted ones) ?
Also how can I view files that end with *.ithmb ?
    Thanks

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1314
When transferring photos from your computer to your iPhone via the iTunes sync process, the photos are optimized for viewing on your iPhone, which is what the iPod Photo Cache stores. If you delete the iPad Photo Cache for a folder of photos that has been selected to be transferred to your iPhone and the folder remains selected, the photos will be optimized again and another iPod Photo Cache will be created.

I have tow question about measure folder
1-     How can I make measure folder contain both dimensions & measures?
         Like this image http://www.oracle.com/webfolder/technetwork/tutorials/obe/fmw/bi/r10122/images/d1t10202.gif
2-     When I create measure folder and add some measures in it, when I query cube these measures still displayed out of folders how can I make all measures and dimensions displayed only on folders like the above image ?
    Regards,
    Gado

    Hi Andy,
There should be no difference in functionality for these two kinds of folders. You can perform all the operations on these two kinds of folders without any difference, for example, delivery messages, create view settings/rules and etc.

  • Question about playlists

I have a question about library of songs & playlists....
Currently, I have used up 3.36GB on my computer, and its eating up space, can I clear my current library from my computer & start over with more of my music without it getting erased from my IPOD?

Only if you set you IPOD to "Manual" Update. I suggest you think about adding a second hard drive to your computer. It would make reloading your IPOD a big effort should you need to restore it. You should also be backing up any music that was purchased as well.
