Question about lightroom import

I edit a DNG photo in Photoshop CC from lightroom 5.  If I save it as a JPG, it does not go back into lightroom.  I can not see the photo in lightroom to import it.  It shows in Windows explore but not in lightroom import.

If you save, it will go back to LR as a tiff or PSD,depending how you have your preferences set for external editing.
If you save as the saved file will not go back to LR, you will have to synchronize or import depending on here you saved the file.
My preference is to let the tiff go back to LR and stack alongside tthe orgonal raw file. Makes life much simpler when trying to find files.
If I need a jpg for email or other purposes I export one in the size and flavor (Prophoto, AdobeRGB, sRGB, etc) needed for the purpose.

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.

  • Fundamental Question about Lightroom and saving images

I have to laugh as I get ready to pose this question because I've been working with the program for two weeks with Scott Kelby's book and with Lynda.com, and I'm still profoundly confused about what is happening to the photo. To wit: I open a camera raw file in lightroom and start playing with it, even taking snapshots at various stages along the way. If I don't export the photo to Photoshop and save it there, what becomes of these changes? Do they stay with the photo always? Do they disappear when I shut down the program? There's no SAVE button with Lightroom which just plain flummoxes me! Can anyone 'splain this to me, please? Thanks.

To clarify. Nothing happens to your originals. Lightroom stores the edits in a database (and if you wish alongside the original in a xmp sidecar file) as a set of instructions that the program uses to recreate the end product by following the instructions. These instructions are changed in the database while you're changing parameter values in Lightroom, so there is no need to save. Also, Lightroom stores a history of changes you did, so you can always go back. Both Lightroom and Adobe's camera raw plugin for photoshop can be used to follow the set if instructions. This way, you always get the highest fidelity image and you can always go back to your development choices without loosing any quality or having to dig up backups. Because of this, you can create multiple virtual copies with different development approaches without having to make a copy of the original and therefore saving you gobs and gobs of disk space. When you need a file for consumption such as a jpeg for a web page, simply export a copy, which burns in your development changes in a developed copy (just like printing a negative would have in the olden days) and trash the copy when you're done with it. You can always recreate it very quickly. This is a radically different approach than you're probably used to.

  • Question about Lightroom 5 licence

    Hi Everyone
I'm trying the Creative Cloud Photography plan (one-year) I have a only one question ( at the moment) If I decided to cancel my subscription after one year, what about the licence ?
If I want to stay with that  version in my computer , do I get the licence for it ? Who is the  owner ? If I make  reinstallation in my computer how can I put back lightroom 5 in my new computer or new system without not connection with Adobe cloud ? In this case some point is not clear for me.
    Thank you

The answer to your question is section 2.1.2.3 in the Lightroom CC EULA on this page Licenses and terms of use | Adobe

  • Some question About title importer plugin

We are developing a title importer plugin for CS6, and have some question, hope forums could help me. Thank you very much.
    1) Is there API to get title clip's in, out point in timeline ?
in imImageRec data structures, these is a in/out point, but it is trim in/out point, is not timeline in/out, how to get these point ?
    2) Because we are also developing a subtitle importer for CS6, when user want to record the subtitle timecode, we hope we could control timeline play/stop, and get the playing/stopped callback, in same time, we could get the current playing position. But, it seems that these is no way to do this. I want to known, is there any plan to support these features in future ? Or, is there some work around methods to get these ?

I really appreciate your reply, I will look for VideoSegmentSuite to get the in/out point.
Q: Why we need timeline in/out of title clip ?
A: Our titler could do animation, when user strench title clip in timeline, clip's length will be changed, we hope we could scale animiation to fit the new length. ( I means animation will be slower or faster with new length), in imImporterImageRec, there is a in/out point and postion, but, we found they are not correct in sometimes, and SDK help PDF tell me there is a API bug in it, is it fixed or not ?
In another, in ImportImage API, we use (Rec->pos + Rec->in) / Rec->sampleSize to get real frame number for out title clip rendering when our title is imNoDurationNoDefault, we test it, it seems that it is right. But if our title is imNoDurationStillDefault, then Rec->pos and Rec->in and Rec->out are all based 90000+, and Rec->out was not right in some times (when we strench clip's outpoint in timeline), it is a bug or we missed something ? In this situation, we have to use (Rec->pos - Rec->in) / Rec->sampleSize to get the rendering frame number, it seems that it is right too. But, we could not use Rec->out, because it was wrong in sometimes.
    New questions:
    1) When we dragdrop our title files to timeline directly from windows explorer, Premiere will call imGetInfo8 (in here, we will allocate a private data for this clip), imOpenFile8, and there is no chance to call imGetPrefs8, so, when we close Premiere, imCloseFile will not be called for this clip, memory leaks for our private data. If we drag the title files to Premiere Bin firstly, then Premiere will call imGetPrefs8, imGetInfo8, imOpenFile8, there is no problem, imCloseFile will be called when we release this title clip.
So, my conclusion is: Premiere must call imGetPrefs8, else imCloseFile will not be called, I think it was a bug, isnot it?
    2) We have a title template library (they are all based template title file), and, we use OLE dragdrop (COleDataSource->DoDragDrop), when we drag-drop these files to Premiere Bin/Timeline/SourceMonitor/TargetMonitor, there is a lots of memory leaks in oledobj2.cpp (microsoft source code files for COleDataSource), we are sure our code is correct, because if we dragdrop to our windows or other NLE (for example, EDIUS), there is not any problem. So, I guess, because we use MFC, and Premiere did not support it fully? Do you have see this problem before ?  Do you have another suggestion to do these drag-drops ?
    3) About to get sequence start timecode, we see a thread in forum which said there is new sdk headers, use them, we could get it through PrSDKSequenceInfoSuite. But its downloading link is broken, so, how to get new SDK headers? could you give me a new link to download ?
BTW, we are useing CS6 SDK Release2 + CS6, and will upgrade to 6.03 to test.
Thank you very much. and Sorry for these lots of questions, I am new guy in Premiere plug-ins developing.

    1) may i customize the tool tip information ?
i mean when i move the mouse over the thumbs, the tool tip pop up?
i get few informations , can i customize and add more exif information
Yes, you can. Tooltips show the same information you see in Loupe Info Overlay. Customize the overlay and you change what tooltips show. Also you can customize what the the thumbnail borders themselves show. For example, right-click on the file-name or rating label, and you can change to something else.
    2) there is the exif browser in the 1.4.1 ,in lightroom 3 the exif filter

No. You can only read the focus distance in the Metadata panel.

  • Question about the import process in UC&CU upgrade

    Hi,
    We have are doing an UC&CU upgrade ( 4.7 => ERP6 ehp4)
We have export the database (unicode converssion) and we are in the step where it's the import.
I would to kno what i have to do in this SAPinst step :
Database Schema Database objects have been found in the database schema (dv1 in DV1) used for this installation. You must delete these objects, or use another database or SAP SID as entered in the previous dialogs.
and there is check box : Delete existing database objects.
I would like to be sure about this option.
I supose i have to valid this option if someone could confirm this point.

If you do a Unicode conversion (no matter in a UC & CU scenario or as a single project) the target system must be empty - means, you will create a new database and load it with the content you exported.
You can't install the export into your already existing database with the same name.

  • Stupid questions about keeping important calls on the FX application thread

I'm working on a project that I've been developing for about the last 6 months. I'm using JavaFX as the graphical side, but I'm taking input from a music processing program called Max/MSP, and I'm getting user input from a camera. Both of these things need to run on separate threads from my FX application thread. Up until now, things have been going smoothly. I can manipulate things on screen from my user input, and I have two way communication working between my JavaFX application and Max. Now, however, I need to start actually drawing stuff at runtime. Up until now, pretty much all FX side manipulations of been to just make translations. I now need to create, add, and remove children from Nodes. So I'm of course getting an error saying "not on FX application thread". I understand why it isn't on this thread, and why this is a problem. So I made some changes, so that calls that will make changes to the nodes on the stage, will only note the data, and then make the changes later, on the FX application thread. And then I run into problems, involving my own stupidity...
I have no idea how to get these calls onto the FX application thread. I mean, this should be really easy. I'm obviously missing something. Or maybe I'm just really tired, and have been looking at this for too long, or maybe the fact that it's been 6 months since I wrote this part of the code. But I see my Mainstage class, which extends Application. It has a start function, which sets up all my on screen do-dads (extended from Nodes and such), calls stage.show()... and then seems to end. When I've done things like call translate functions on my nodes from my user input thread, or from my communication from Max thread, things seemed to have worked. But now I'm thinking I might have been handling that wrong from the ground up. It seems likely that I should be having a "main game loop" (it isn't actually a game, but still, same principle) where I can tell the stage to update all the various nodes with the changes that have happened since the last frame, and try to get everything to update in time for the graphics to render at a reliable frame rate. And yet, I'm just not seeing how to do that. I'm sure this should be obvious, but I'm flat out blanking. And the time crunch is starting to descend... Please, if you can point out some standard way of avoiding this hopefully common newb mistake, I would greatly appreciate it!

Checkout the documentation on "Pulse" in the JavaFX Archictecture overview which may help clarify some of your questions.
    http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2.0/architecture/jfxpub-architecture.htm
In simple terms, as I understand it, the framework will check 60 times a second if anything is dirty and needs repainting. If everything is clean, it will do nothing. If something is dirty, it will repaint it (although the repaint is kind of clever and highly optimized to support region image caching, make use of hardware rendering, etc).
So you can see that the main rendering loop is essentially hidden from you. Instead you construct a SceneGraph, the system checks regularly whether or not the SceneGraph has changed, and if it has it renders the updated SceneGraph.
In most JavaFX applications, you have a UI with controls and add event handlers which respond to control input to update the SceneGraph. In such programs, creating a main loop is unnecessary.
You can set up an animation timeline say at, for example, 30fps (half the pulse rate), then, on every other pulse, nothing will have changed so no redraw will happen. This is only necessary if you are performing an animation or capturing camera input, etc yourself (rather than using a Transition for example).
Actually, if I get my state changes working properly in a runLater call, do I need to also write a main loop? No, you don't need to write a main loop. Depending on the exact application, you may want one, but if you are already getting events generated by your camera input at 30fps, processing each 30fps from the camera in a runLater call would work fine without creating a loop.
But you do need to be careful that you don't send too many runLater calls and eventually overload the JavaFX event queue. For example it makes no sense to make more than 60 runLater calls a second to update the scene, because the system will never update the scene more than 60 times a second anyway.
If you do get a working camera app integrated with JavaFX, please post or blog about it as I am sure many people are interested in such an application.

  • Question about Lightroom/Photoshop CC Package

This is the third time I've typed this.  I hope this is the last!  Basically I've been advised to subscribe to the Lightroom/Photoshop package as an individual. The website tells me the cost and I can see the forums (fora?), video tutorials and the like.  What I can't see is a definitive list of what I get for my money - support, guidance materials, length of contract and the like. I also can't see whether downloading the apps will take space on my computer (and if so, how much) or whether it's all cloud based. Surely somewhere there is a link to such a list of basic information?  If so, can someone please direct me to it?  Many thanks.

You get Photoshop and Lightroom and they install on your machine. See the system specs for the ballpark space requirements.  You say you have already seen the forums, video tutorials, and the like.  The length of the contract depends on which contract you choose.  I don't know what "and the like" refers to as far as what else you cannot see.

  • Question about Lightroom and Tiffen's DFx filter

Message title was edited by: Brett N

Do you mean filters as in Lens filters? Or do you mean rendering filters like Halftone and Find Edges?
Then you mention presets. Lightroom presets are very different than Photoshop/Photoshop Elements presets. The presets are for specific modules and are only saved values for the various sliders. Presets that work in Photoshop Elements are not expect to work in Lightroom.

  • Question about lightroom tutorials

Why aren't adobetv videos tutorials for lightroom able to play in either firefox 21 or IE 10? I have tried both browsers and the video area is black with no play button. Weird. There isn't an ad blocker on -- I need help. Anyone?

I use IE10 and I have no problem watching Adobe videos.
So you must have either a slow internet connection or a setting in your web-browsers prevents the display of the videos.
If slow internet connection: Wait some time until your computer was able to download enough "buffer" for the video to start. Since internet connections often vary in speed (depending on the usage) the computer downloads a portion of the video in advance before the video starts in order to have a "buffer" when the download slows down.
If it is not that, check the security settings for your web browsers, and also allow pop-ups for the Adobe website.

  • Questions about adding files in LR3

I've been a happy LR user for years. I used the LR3 beta and liked it (especially the 2nd version) and generally I'm very happy with the release version of LR3. But I have some questions about the import process.
In LR2 I could edit off my Compact Flash cards (I know that's not smart, but sometimes on deadline fast is better than not smart) by adding the photos my library without moving them. That option is grayed out in LR3. Is there a way to turn it on or is this is a "new feature." If it's a permanent thing, maybe for 3.1 or the next incremental upgrade Adobe could make this possible with a popup (like we get when adding captions to multiple files) warning that editing photos on a CF (or SD) card is a bad idea. But let us make the decision.

It's a deliberate change - time to adjust the workflow!

  • Some questions about importing HTML files

    Hi, folks
Let's suppose we want to import a pack of HTML files formatted in HTML5 wit's it's CSS into a double-oriented folio. A couple or three questions about that, please:
    1. Is there a limit for a reasonable quantity of HTML files I can import into a folio? I mean.. 100 would be way too much, for instance?
    2. These HTML files could be navigated and referenced from inside TOC-pages made in InDesign, right? (navto://..., I gues?)
    2. Will it be possible, by means of HTML adaptative design techniques, to treat both orientations (vertical and horizontal) as different viewports or screen sizes so that the design adapts for instance the column width with its CSS?
    3. That said, will the InDesign final app. respect that adaptative CSS rules?
I am asking this because we are looking for a way to inject big quantities of content with a very similar design into our application in a really fast and automatizable way and I have the suspicion* that importing HTML5 preformated CSS files could be the a very good and simple alternative to importing XML into InDesign templates as we start out content as tagged almost-html files.
    Thanks a lot
    Gustavo Sánchez (Posting from Madrid)

I assume you are asking about using HTML articles.
    1. There is no limit beyond simply keeping things reasonable.
    2. Yes. Just use navto://articlename
    3. Yes. I've used min-width of 768 and max width of 1024 to control it.
    4. InDesign does not enter into any of this with the exception of using the folio builder panel. Everything else is done in Dreamweaver or whatever program you decide to use for the article.
If you want to restrict the HTML articles to one orientation or the other, use the _h and _v suffixes.
