Question about Lightroom/Photoshop CC Package

This is the third time I've typed this.  I hope this is the last!  Basically I've been advised to subscribe to the Lightroom/Photoshop package as an individual. The website tells me the cost and I can see the forums (fora?), video tutorials and the like.  What I can't see is a definitive list of what I get for my money - support, guidance materials, length of contract and the like. I also can't see whether downloading the apps will take space on my computer (and if so, how much) or whether it's all cloud based. Surely somewhere there is a link to such a list of basic information?  If so, can someone please direct me to it?  Many thanks.

You get Photoshop and Lightroom and they install on your machine. See the system specs for the ballpark space requirements.  You say you have already seen the forums, video tutorials, and the like.  The length of the contract depends on which contract you choose.  I don't know what "and the like" refers to as far as what else you cannot see.

  • Fundamental Question about Lightroom and saving images

I have to laugh as I get ready to pose this question because I've been working with the program for two weeks with Scott Kelby's book and with Lynda.com, and I'm still profoundly confused about what is happening to the photo. To wit: I open a camera raw file in lightroom and start playing with it, even taking snapshots at various stages along the way. If I don't export the photo to Photoshop and save it there, what becomes of these changes? Do they stay with the photo always? Do they disappear when I shut down the program? There's no SAVE button with Lightroom which just plain flummoxes me! Can anyone 'splain this to me, please? Thanks.

To clarify. Nothing happens to your originals. Lightroom stores the edits in a database (and if you wish alongside the original in a xmp sidecar file) as a set of instructions that the program uses to recreate the end product by following the instructions. These instructions are changed in the database while you're changing parameter values in Lightroom, so there is no need to save. Also, Lightroom stores a history of changes you did, so you can always go back. Both Lightroom and Adobe's camera raw plugin for photoshop can be used to follow the set if instructions. This way, you always get the highest fidelity image and you can always go back to your development choices without loosing any quality or having to dig up backups. Because of this, you can create multiple virtual copies with different development approaches without having to make a copy of the original and therefore saving you gobs and gobs of disk space. When you need a file for consumption such as a jpeg for a web page, simply export a copy, which burns in your development changes in a developed copy (just like printing a negative would have in the olden days) and trash the copy when you're done with it. You can always recreate it very quickly. This is a radically different approach than you're probably used to.

  • Question about Lightroom 5 licence

    Hi Everyone
I'm trying the Creative Cloud Photography plan (one-year) I have a only one question ( at the moment) If I decided to cancel my subscription after one year, what about the licence ?
If I want to stay with that  version in my computer , do I get the licence for it ? Who is the  owner ? If I make  reinstallation in my computer how can I put back lightroom 5 in my new computer or new system without not connection with Adobe cloud ? In this case some point is not clear for me.
    Thank you

The answer to your question is section 2.1.2.3 in the Lightroom CC EULA on this page Licenses and terms of use | Adobe

Yes, you can. Tooltips show the same information you see in Loupe Info Overlay. Customize the overlay and you change what tooltips show. Also you can customize what the the thumbnail borders themselves show. For example, right-click on the file-name or rating label, and you can change to something else.

No. You can only read the focus distance in the Metadata panel.

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.

  • Question about lightroom import

I edit a DNG photo in Photoshop CC from lightroom 5.  If I save it as a JPG, it does not go back into lightroom.  I can not see the photo in lightroom to import it.  It shows in Windows explore but not in lightroom import.

If you save, it will go back to LR as a tiff or PSD,depending how you have your preferences set for external editing.
If you save as the saved file will not go back to LR, you will have to synchronize or import depending on here you saved the file.
My preference is to let the tiff go back to LR and stack alongside tthe orgonal raw file. Makes life much simpler when trying to find files.
If I need a jpg for email or other purposes I export one in the size and flavor (Prophoto, AdobeRGB, sRGB, etc) needed for the purpose.

  • Question about Lightroom and Tiffen's DFx filter

Have loaded Tiffen filter software in Elements 10 and Lightroom 4  Can find and use it in Elements but can't seem to locateit in Lightroom  What am I missing
Message title was edited by: Brett N

Do you mean filters as in Lens filters? Or do you mean rendering filters like Halftone and Find Edges?
Then you mention presets. Lightroom presets are very different than Photoshop/Photoshop Elements presets. The presets are for specific modules and are only saved values for the various sliders. Presets that work in Photoshop Elements are not expect to work in Lightroom.

  • [SOLVED] Two Questions about b43-firmware AUR Package

Hi. On my old laptop, my wifi adapter worked out-of-the-box / no extra driver installation required. On my new laptop I have the Broadcom BCM43228 wi-fi adapter. Up to this point I have just been using the proprietary broadcom-wl driver, which has worked fine but it has been annoying having to rebuild (that is: install latest linux-headers, run makepkg) and reinstall broadcom-wl every time the linux kernel is upgraded. I discovered that the open-source b43 firmware recently added support for the chip. So I have two questions...
    1. With b43, would I still need to rebuild/reinstall the package every time the kernel is upgraded?
    2. Is there any way to know if the linux kernel will integrate b43 some day? Is this something that happens? I'm assuming it must be because I didn't have to install anything extra to use the wi-fi adapter on my old laptop. Maybe there's some schedule online of when the linux kernel developers intend to integrate open-source drivers/firmware directly into the kernel?
    Thanks!

It's not firmware that added support, it's the driver.
driver = code that runs in the kernel
firmware = code that runs on the device itself
tony5429 wrote:1. With b43, would I still need to rebuild/reinstall the package every time the kernel is upgraded?
Nope, the firmware isn't tied to a particular kernel.
tony5429 wrote:2. Is there any way to know if the linux kernel will integrate b43 some day?
The kernel does have b43 integrated. What the package installs isn't the driver, it's the firmware that gets uploaded onto the wifi card.
A lot of firmware is distributed in the linux-firmware package. However this requires that the firmware is released under a license that allows redistribution. But the b43 firmware isn't redistributable, that's why you need to get it from AUR.

  • [SOLVED] Some questions about a recently submited package (cgames)

Hi there, when searching for ncurses sokoban-like games I ended up finding a great one that wasn't at the AUR yet. I submitted it (the package is named cgames) but I have some questions.
1- The source code provided by the developer has 3 games. Should I have packaged each one individually? I decided this way because they are so small that I figure nobody would have a problem in having them all even when just wanting to play one of them (you can always change the make command in the PKGBUILD if you want a single game).
2 - The original package had some compiling problems due to a function called getline (already existing in stdio.h) and I solved this problem with a sed command. Is this the proper way to do it? Should I have created some patch file or something?
3- I'm 99% sure the game works in 64bit archs, but 99 isn't 100. Can anyone try it out for me, so that I change the PKGBUILD? I know I should have tested it but I don't have the time to install a 64b arch in the next few days.
    Thank you in advance

    Yeap, a bit
    Anyway, all done (i think)
    Second release:
    - Replaced sed command with a patch
    - Added x64 arch
    - Fixed a little bug with the configure command
