Question about long audiobook files before I buy Zen Mi

I am in the market to buy a hard dri've MP3 player for the purpose of playing audio books. Specifically, I want to download audio books from my local library's netlibrary account and listen to them on the go (these files are 32kbps DRM WMAs). These files have caused problems for two different players I have tried, due to their long length (most files are over 00MB, and play for 8+ hours). I have an old iRi'ver flash player, which will play these files fine, until you get about 4 hours into the file. Then, when you turn off the player, the time elapsed jumps from where you were to 2 hours or so. What this means is that you can't listen to the entire book unless you play the book for its entire duration without stopping it or turning it off. I next tried a Rio Carbon, but it has a different problem. Every time you turn off the Carbon and turn it back on, it will lose it's place in the file by 0min-hour, depending on how long the track is and how much you have listened to. The only ways around this is to either never turn the player off, or write down the time elapsed before you turn off the player, and then fast forward to that time when you turn the Carbon back on. After fighting with it for a week, I returned the Carbon.
So my question is, has anyone actually used a Zen Micro to listen to a very long audiobook, and does it have any weird issues like I have experienced with other players? All I want the thing to do is remember where I left off when I power off the device, within a few seconds.
Thanks

Lots of people have audio books on their micros and i havent head of anyone complaining about them. one good feature the micro has that i believe other dont is the ability to place book marks in a song/audio book at a set time so you can automatically go to where you want without searching.so you could save the book marks for each chapter or something.

• Some questions about MSI Z97M Gaming before I buy...

First question is, there seems to be some issues with updating firmware, whats the issue of using M Flash thats built into the BIOS? I was reading the sticky and it's talking about making a boot disc to do it. Also how is the Killer NIC? Once again I see a lot of problems with it here on this forum. I prefer Intel NICs but i'm willing to give something a chance. Last question, can the LED audio accent lighting strip (the one for the audio) be turned off? I downloaded the PDF manual and it didn't say anything about it.
Thanks for your time guys

The BIOS comes with the BIOS + ME update for that BIOS version and if you do use M-flash make sure to use Update BIOS and ME option....

Also, you could turn off some of the LEDs including the audio strip under BIOS settings. I have the same LED stripe on my MB, I believe it's the same design and can be turned off.
like this guy said if its like his it can probably be turned off (my quote: (it may be possible but i just do not know)) in the BIOS settings somewhere but you would have to go section by section to find it (I do not see why they wouldn't have some option to disable it but it may be a little tricky to find and probably in some obscure sub menus under lighting or chipset features or something)!

• Basic question about importing wma files

Hi, I have a basic question about importing wma files. I ripped some cd's on a Mindows computer using Media Player, but now want to copy them to my Mac and use them in iTunes on my Mac. when I use Import in iTunes, nothing happens and I cant even seem to copy them one by one using the Music folder.
Can someone help me?
thanks
eMac Mac OS X (10.4.4)

iTunes for Mac doesn't support .wma files.
If you can use a PC to convert them, you can use one of many freeware applications. Google for 'wma to mp3'.
For the Mac there's the shareware program EasyWMA that can convert them.
Hope this helps.

• Few Questions About Backing Up Files

Okay, I'm pretty new to this, and have checked the support pages, but I do have some questions about backing up my files.
I'm running out of room on my computer's hard drive, and am wondering if burning the library to CDs will allow me to quickly restore my library on my computer when I sync my iPod.
I know that when an iPod syncs with a comp, it will lose any songs that aren't on the library list. (If I deleted some songs to free up room, I'd lose those songs on my iPod when I synced it up.) Is there a way to prevent that from happening? Some way to save a headache continuously restoring my iPod's library every time I want to add a new song or recharge it?
I'm on Windows XP, if that matters.

Best and easiest solution is to buy an external hard drive. Then simply drag and drop your iTunes folder from your internal onto the external and copy the entire library.

• Some questions about importing HTML files

Hi, folks
Let's suppose we want to import a pack of HTML files formatted in HTML5 wit's it's CSS into a double-oriented folio. A couple or three questions about that, please:
1. Is there a limit for a reasonable quantity of HTML files I can import into a folio? I mean.. 100 would be way too much, for instance?
2. These HTML files could be navigated and referenced from inside TOC-pages made in InDesign,right? (navto://..., I gues?)
2. Will it be possible, by means of HTML adaptative design techniques, to treat both orientations (vertical and horizontal) as different viewports or screen sizes so that the design adapts for instance the column width with its CSS?
3. That said, will the InDesign final app. respect that adaptative CSS rules?
I am asking this because we are looking for a way to inject big quantities of content with a very similar design into our application in a really fast and automatizable way and I have the suspicion* that importing HTML5 preformated CSS files could be the a very good and simple alternative to importing XML into InDesign templates as we start out content as tagged almost-html files.
Thanks a lot
Gustavo Sánchez (Posting from Madrid)

I assume you are asking about using HTML articles.
1. There is no limit beyond simply keeping things reasonable.
2. Yes. Just use navto://articlename
3. Yes. I've used min-width of 768 and max width of 1024 to control it.
4. InDesign does not enter into any of this with the exception of using the folio builder panel. Everything else is done in Dreamweaver or whatever program you decide to use for the article.
If you want to restrict the HTML articles to one orientation or the other, use the _h and _v suffixes.

• Question about calling batch file by using the System Exec+.vi?

Hi
I have a problem about calling batch file. I know that the system exec is equivalent to "run" in Windows. I called the batch file c:\rtxdos\bs\ch0.bat successfully in the "run" but it didn't work in the LabVIEW program. The dos prompt had an error message "Bad command or file name" and it just happen when I call this batch file in LabVIEW. Why?
Bill.

Hi,
Try to set the "working directory" parameter of System exec.vi to the directory where the batch file is located. It may help.
Good luck.

• Question about 1080p MP4 files as inputs

Hello All,
It's been a long time since I visited last. I just ordered a Sanyo FH1 camcorder to try out for the first time. I have been trying to use hybrid cameras for HD clips to go along with my photos in integtrated photo/video shows, but have been disappointed with the IQ, sharpness, and motion when playing the files on my PS3. I usually use ProShow for slideshows, but want to go back to using PREL (I have 7.0) when I have more clips than pix. Will it handle these FH1 1080p60 files as Inputs? I understand that PREL 7 does not output a full 1080p file, but would like to start working with it again. Any experiences would be helpful...
Jay B.

Jay B
I would have to dig out the details, but several months ago I did bring 1080p60 into the Premiere Elements 7 Timeline and was able to edit it successfully, realizing, as you do, that there is no export for 1080p from Premiere Elements. I would give it a try, using the Premiere Elements 7 project preset (New Project dialog) of NTSC AVCHD Full HD 1080i30 (or the PAL counterpart). That does not prohibit you from making a different export choice.
I did some reading on your camera, the Sanyo FH1. In the Full-HR mode, it looks like it offers the 1080p60 (1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 frames per second, progressive). But, it appears you have an alternative in the Full HD mode of 1080i60 (1920 x 1080 pixels at 60 fields per second (30 frames per second), interlaced). It will be interesting to see how they compare. Whichever way, from what I have read, the capture is to an interlace sensor in the camera, before it is recorded to the camera's medium.
I am just an explorer in this, but my initial venture into this "can Premiere Elements 7 handle 1080p" indicates Yes.
I will be looking forward to your results.

• Question about multiple class files

I just started learning JAVA a couple of days ago and the first program I wrote had two classes in one file. here is the program :
class fib_num {
public int value;
public boolean is_even;
class Fibonacci {
/** Print the Fibonacci sequence for values < MAX and mark even numbers with an asterick */
private static final int MAX = 50;
private static final String Title = "The Fibonacci sequence for values less than " + MAX + ":";
private static fib_num[] fib = new fib_num[MAX];//This is actually an array of object
//references to objects of the fib_num class
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println(Title);
//We must initialize each element of the array also !!!!
for (int i = 0; i < fib.length; i += 1) {
fib = new fib_num();
int lo = 1, hi = 1;
fib[0].value = lo;
fib[0].is_even = false;
fib[1].value = hi;
fib[1].is_even = false;
for (int i = 2; i < fib.length; i += 1) {
//create the next Fibonacci number and then save the previous Fibonacci number
hi = lo + hi;
lo = hi - lo;
fib.value = hi;
//now indicate if the Fibonacci number is even/odd
if (fib.value % 2 == 0) {
fib.is_even = true;
}else {
fib.is_even = false;
print (fib);
//This method prints an array of Fibonacci numbers
public static void print(fib_num[] array) {
if (array == null || array.length == 0)
throw new IllegalArgumentException();
String mark;
for (int i = 0; array.value < MAX; i += 1) {
if (array.is_even) {
mark = "*";
}else {
mark = "";
System.out.println((i + 1) + ": " + array.value + mark);
I ran the program and everything went fine. But today I started to write another program with two classes. However the file will not compile and I get an error about interfacing or something. here is the program:
Note: it's not nearly complete.
class enumerate {

public static final int MAX = 4;
public static int[] initialize(int[] nums) {

public static void print(int[] nums) {
for (int i = 0; i < nums.length; i++) {
System.out.print(nums);
System.out.println("");
public static void swap (int[] nums, int i, int j) {
int temp = nums;
nums = nums[j];
nums[j] = temp;
public static void main (String[] args) {
int[] list = new int[MAX];
list = initialize(list);
PermutationGenerator x = new PermutationGenerator(5);
// Systematically generate permutations.
import java.math.BigInteger;
public class PermutationGenerator {

a = new int[n];
total = getFactorial (n);
reset ();
// Reset
public void reset () {
for (int i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
a = i;
numLeft = new BigInteger (total.toString ());

for (int i = n; i > 1; i--) {
fact = fact.multiply (new BigInteger (Integer.toString (i)));
return fact;
// Generate next permutation (algorithm from Rosen p. 284)
public int[] getNext () {
if (numLeft.equals (total)) {
numLeft = numLeft.subtract (BigInteger.ONE);
return a;
int temp;
// Find largest index j with a[j] < a[j+1]
int j = a.length - 2;
while (a[j] > a[j+1]) {
j--;
// Find index k such that a[k] is smallest integer
// greater than a[j] to the right of a[j]
int k = a.length - 1;
while (a[j] > a[k]) {
k--;
// Interchange a[j] and a[k]
temp = a[k];
a[k] = a[j];
a[j] = temp;
// Put tail end of permutation after jth position in increasing order
int r = a.length - 1;
int s = j + 1;
while (r > s) {
temp = a[s];
a[s] = a[r];
a[r] = temp;
r--;
s++;
numLeft = numLeft.subtract (BigInteger.ONE);
return a;
I thought the error had somethin to do with only having one class per .java file since the compiler creates a .class file. But how come my first program had two classes and it was OK. Is it b/c the second class was merely a collection of fields, almost like a simple struct in C?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Move the import java.math.BigInteger line to the start of the file.
Use the "[ code ] [ /code ]" tags around your code when you post, it makes reading it a lot easier.

• Question about media player files on websites

Hi, I'm a mac newbie (3days now) and loving it. Starting to think why did I wait so long. Anyway exuse me if my question sounds dumb. Sometimes when I'm on websites windows media files won't show up. Do I need some type of download or plugin?

Well those are both odd. Office programs would not open anymore even though Flip4Mac did NOT install?
I have Mac OS X 10.3.9, QuickTime 7.0.4 and Office 2004 - and I haven't seen those problems.
Try logging in as a different user (if you don't have another user account, you can create one Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts > + ) and see if Office apps work in that account and also if the Flip4Mac installer works there. If it works there, then you have some preference file weirdness in your own user's Library folder.
If Flip4Mac still won't install, you could also try manually removing the Windows Media Player browser plug-ins from (your hard drive)/Library/Internet Plug-ins and / or try installing the older version 1.0.2 of WMV Player. The link is at the bottom of this page:
http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm
Then try reinstalling the newer 2.0.2 version if that worked.

• Question about changing a file type into another file type

Hello. This isnt a java question but you guys have been so helpful in the past I hope its ok if I ask this question for a friend.
How can I import a scriptware file into Screenwriter 2000, or change a .scw file into a .tag file?
Anyone who can help thanks.

I know nothing about scriptware or Screenwriter. But, my only advice is to see if Scriptware can export some other file type (not necessarily a .scw file) that Screenwriter can read. Sometimes, when I have two text editors whose native formats are incompatible (like opening a paper typed in a new version of Microsoft Word using an old version of WordPerfect or something), I save the file as an RTF file, rather than in the native format. Maybe something like that applies to your situation, too.
Hope that helps.

• OSD: different pxe, question about different wim-files

Hi,
Please see this question, I'm somewhat confused about the different
wim files.
I can see the default winpe.wim and a different wim next to it which has name winpe then environment then number (winpe.sccm0022.wim), what is this file.
And, like in my post, why can't I use this image to import into a pxe and boot from that?
Please advise.
J.
Jan Hoedt

Hi,
What is your goal with this? boot to SCCM and do OS deployment or what is your purpose? when dowloading the boot .wim file from a DP parameters are passed along like MP and so on. So you cannot use that .WIM file and pxe-boot from another PXE solution and
do OSD from ConfigMgr.
That is why Johan's unsupported solution would be the way to try it.

• Three questions about signed jar file and applet

I use three signed jar file. Each of them signed by different certificate. First of JARs contain applet class. When I start applet from html page I see message “This applet was signed by…… but Java cannot verify it… Do you trust…?”. All times I press “Yes I trust” and after this questions applet stop to work end exit. If I use only one certificate for signing of three JARs then applet continue to work after question. 1) What should I do to fix this bug? 2) Is it any method to check from applet that user press Trust button? Is it any method to emulate work of SecurityManager to check that Certificate object is trusted (I want do call some method check(Certificate) and if certificate is not trusted I want to see message with question: “Do you want to trust this certificate” and so on)?

Hello Jarman,
1. If I have a signed jar file, then as long as the
certificate is recognised as trusted that applet can
run as a fully trusted application on the client
machine. So I should not have to add lines such as
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
"readFileDescriptor", "read" ;
permission java.lang.RuntimePermission
"writeFileDescriptor", "write" ;
to my java.policy file. true/false ?true
2. If I am running a signed jar file in the Java
plugin then I do not need to have a verisign or thawte
certificate (however to allow my certificate to be
accepted I do have to import it into the cacerts file
on the client machine). True/false?true
3. Following on from question 2, if I want to be able
to run an applet on a client machine, without messing
around with ANY files on those machines, I need a
verisign or thawte certificate. True/false?true
4. (And finally) Apart from a security exception
saying that I need to add one of the lines like those
of question 1, is there any way I can get other debug
information as to why the signed jar file is not being
recognised as signed?No. This could be a problem of importing your certifcate into the wrong place.
The information on the following link is a little bit dated but it helped me to successfully install a testcertificate and sign an applet with it.

• Two questions about the PSD file format specicaition

I'm a programmer dealing with a project to parse PSD files. When reading the official file format specification, I found that some fields of the file are not clarified:
1. There is a rectangle structure containing 4 fields: top, left, buttom, right. I wanna know whether these 4 fields can be negative values and is there a rule that the buttom shoud be larger than the top and the right shoud be larger than the left
2. The PSD file contains a color mode section. But if the color mode is RGB, the color mode section contians no data but a 4-byte length field whose value is set to 0. This is true for files in RGB mode 8-bit channel. But after convert the files to RGB mode 32-bit channel using photoshop, the whole color mode section is no long exist.
These two questions may be somehow technical, I would be thankful if someone can give me a hand.

1) was covered in the documentation at one time. Yes, many of them can be negative, that's why they're signed values. Valid rectangles will have the bottom greater than the top, and the right greater than the left. But you can also have empty rectangles, and sometimes invalid rectangles (because the values don't matter).
2) Not sure what you're asking... color mode is just a single enumeration for RGB, CMYK, etc.

• Please help..question about sending pdf file from my ipad to another

I have a pdf file in Kindle that shows up under documents. I am wanting to locate it and send it from my ipad to another..whether through email or even share through kindle. I contacted kindle and they said I have to contact apple with instructions to retreiving the pdf before I can send it. Anyone know how to do it. It shows up in docs on my kindle app but doesnt show up in itunes or on amazon. Help appreciated!!!!

I copied this from another discussion - that ironically enough - James and I both participated in. The OP never responded to what I suggested, but I think that this may work.
I think that the Kindle app uses file sharing so see if you can transfer the files to the computer via iTunes with file sharing.
iOS: About File Sharing
Then drag the pdf file from the file sharing window (or use the save to button) onto your desktop. Email it from there and you can even email it to yourself on the iPad and store it any other other PDF app that you may have.

• My long audiobook files are reduced to very short track lengths when synced with my iPhone

Hi,
(I had a look for this post from somebody else but didn't see anything, apologies if I'm doubling up...)
I have a couple of audiobooks with loooong track lengths, like 10-11 hours per track. But when I sync them to my iPhone to listen, the tracks are cut drastically, only being about an hour each, meaning that I lose the other 10 hours or so of the chapter...
Is there a reason why this happens and does anyone know how to correct this problem?
Cheers

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said. You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing. However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).
If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before. You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.
If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.
