Question about mac email attachments

Hi,
Troubleshooting for my boss who is having trouble opening email attachments in her mac email from just one friends email account.
The attachments are xls and pdf files from a pc user who is using yahoo mail. This happened suddenly in the last week. The mac user can open other peoples attachments of the same file extensions. The mac user can also open the same blocked attachments if the files are forwarded from a different user to them. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a configuration I can change in the yahoo mail of the pc user that could have triggered the mac user to now seemingly be blocking attachments from the pc user? Several other mac and pc users can open the same email attachments from the pc user who is being blockied from my bosses mac email account. Hope this made some sense and thanks in advance for your help!

Its a Mac Pro running 10.9.4.
If it matters the pc user is running windows 7 home addition.
The problem began after the pc user accidently sent the mac user a tiff file. The mac user was unable to open that tiff file and then suddenly all other files sent by the pc user regardless of file type could not be opened by the mac user. They work together so it's imperative that they be able to send xls and pdf files back and forth. Thanks for your help.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • Few questions about mac pro before buying

    Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
    1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
    2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
    3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
    4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
    Thanks for any replies.

    1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
    2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
    3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
    4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

  • Question about Mail and attachments

I have a GMAIL account, and I have no problems sending or receiving email, including attachments.
I send out about 100 emails a day for work, most of them with attachments. For the most part, everything works fine. However, I do get some replies back from customers stating there was no attachment. If I look in my SENT folder on both gmail and on the local folder box, it shows the attachment was sent.
My only fix for this for now is to log into GMAIL and send it out thru there. Anyone else have this problem with Leopard?

If you compose and send in Rich Text Format, and use two or more different fonts or font sizes, including what might added with a Signature, the RTF will be converted to HTML. In turn, the servers or SPAM defenses used by some recipients can be triggered by the HTML, and the attachment actually be removed before the recipient sees it.
Are you using RTF? If so, then if there is someone this always happens with, compose the message, click on Format in the Menubar, and choose Make Plain Text and send as a test.

  • Question about mac mini applecare

i'm getting a new mac mini soon, and hesitating if i need to buy applecare with it. got several questions about the applecare for mac mini:
1.if i upgrade the hard drive of mac mini, which will void the warranty of applecare, will the apple display & wireless keyboard & mouse that i purchase along with mac mini still be under applecare warranty?
2.if i sell the mac mini after one year, will the apple display, keyboard, mouse still under the protection of applecare?
3.i already have a wireless mighty mouse (within one year of purchase) before purchasing mac mini, may i add it to the applecare?
4.if i purchase iSight with mac mini, will be it under the protection of applecare as well?
    appreciate any help!!

    I'll try to help:
    1. Are you a certified Apple Authorized Service Provider? If you are not and you damage anything, the repair will not be covered by the original warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan. I would be up to the service technician doing a repair in the future to tell you if the entire warranty was voided by your actions or not. Since we're all users and none of us work for Apple, we cannot speak for Apple. I would suspect, however I can't be certain, Apple would still give you service for the peripherals since they were not involved in the original incident.
    2. The warranty for the peripherals will travel with the computer. If you no longer own the computer, you will not be able to get service for those parts. If you sell your Mac mini, you have two options: Transfer the AppleCare Protection Plan to the new owner or get a refund for the amount of time you have not used. I would suggest you sell the peripherals with the Mac mini and the AppleCare Protection Plan. This would be a valuable add-on to your sale. Or you can keep the peripherals to use with your next Mac and they'll be covered by your new AppleCare Protection Plan.
    3. You do not need to "enroll" all your peripherals. As long as you own the computer with the AppleCare Protection Plan, you will get support for the peripherals you're using. For example, Apple gave me support for the AirPort Express that I bought before my Mac mini with a plan. As long as it's a mouse, keyboard or AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme, they're covered no matter when you purchased them. However, for a display to be covered, you must purchase the display at the same time or purchase a separate AppleCare Protection Plan for the display.
    4. The AppleCare Protection Plan FAQ (link is a PDF) does not specify that an iSight is a covered peripheral.

You don't give enough information to do more than discuss the issue in general terms.
You should be able to read your email wherever you can get an internet connection.
To send email, it depends on the email provider you are using.  Gmail and other web based mail should not have any issues.  However, if you are attempting to use an account that uses your ISP's mail servers, you will probably not be able to send mail.  You may want to check with your ISP in that case, to see if they offer webmail.
Hope this may have answered your question.

  • General question about Mac hardware

Hello. I have always used Windows. I am considering picking up a used Macbook. I have some questions about hardware. Chiefly, is there a specific reason that Apple is still dedicated to the Core2Duo processors, even in the highest-end Pros? With the advent of the Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors, many PC laptop manufacturers have embraced them, especially the better mainstream manufacturers, like Sony and Toshiba. I know a lot about Windows, but I don't know much about OSX.
Is there something in the software that allows for a Core2Duo on OSX to run as efficiently or more so than an i3 or i5 on Windows 7? As it stands, comparing strict hardware profiles (processors in particular) between what appear to be equivalent current Macbooks and Windows 7 PCs, the Sonys and Toshibas seem to have a distinct advantage.
Sorry if this is a tired question or whatever. Believe me, I'm not asking "WHAT'S BETTER? A MAC OR A PC?" Really.
Many thanks to anyone who can point me to an answer.
    Chris

Well, as to if there is anything that makes OS X run better on the C2D rather than a i3 or i5. I have never use an i3 based computer, but the i5 mac I used was very fast (tried the i5 27" iMac). I don't know why they are currently still using the C2D over that. I can say that the i5 didn't feel any faster, even the quad core Mac pro didn't feel faster. The main advantage to more cores will be in doing more at once. This makes the biggest difference is seen when running things like video editors. There is also a lot more to making the computer fast than just the CPU, the chipset, system bus, video card, and hardware controllers all make a huge difference. Apple has always used very good quality hardware, there have even been times where MacBook Pros have been rated as the best laptops to run Windows. But OS X will run faster on the same hardware because it is a more streamlined OS that uses the hardware more efficiently. Apple works hard to make the OS work as well as it looks, and Snow Leopard runs very well on the current hardware. I have no doubt that Apple will in the near future come out with something newer and better, but my guess is as good as anyone's as to what chip they will use.

  • Question about hacked email

I received a "delivery failure" notice for a message that I never sent.  This delivery failure email included the sent message, so I was able to see that it had been sent to about 10 email addresses that I had most recently sent legitimate email to.  I confirmed with a few of those people that they did receive that message, although it did not appear in my Sent folder.  I would never have know about it had I not received the delivery failure notice.  The sent message was clearly SPAM aimed at getting recipients to click on a link.
I DO NOT keep a "contacts" list or an addressbook., so it seems to me that someone hacked into my account and was able to examine my "sent" emails to get a list of recipients.
I have changed my email password but am not sure what additional measures I need to take to prevent this from happening again and to ensure that my email is adequately protected.   Again, my case seems different because it does not involve "stealing" a list of contact or an addressbook.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Still possible you have a virus on your machine.  Is your Antivirus up to date, and have you done a scan?
Did you look at the headers of the spam to see if it looked like it was coming from inside verizon (or worse from your machine).
Its possible your mail was harvested at one of your recipients.  Considering using BCC  (blind CC) if you send to lots of people and don't need everyone to know who you sent the message to.

  • Everyone's complaining about .Mac email or MacMail! But who has a solution?

Just like everyone on this discussion board, I am having a maddening increase in recent weeks of the following 1) duplicate messages appearing in my inbox after I've already deleted or moved them, sometimes more than twice depending if I keep trying to move/delete the same emails, they keep reappearing 2) messages I've read suddenly appearing as Unread, 3) delayed mail downloads, sometimes for even the smallest of files w/ no attachments. I'm having no other trouble with my ISP or other net software.
Although the increase of occurrences is recent, I've been having this issue all year in varying amounts of regularity and have posted before about the problem. I've been told I might be moving the files too quickly or not letting them download fully before moving them, but if this many people are complaining and if I have to wait 10-15 minutes each time my Mail software gets my mail from the server, then I want my $99 back. As it is, I want it back anyway given the problems and the inability to contact .Mac about the issue and get an answer.
I've combed the other posts about the issue, but I've not once seen a solution to the issue.
How do we get a fix and furthermore, how do we get .Mac to acknowledge this issue responsibly?

    Hello,
It has been acknowledged, and the fix will have to be at the server level, and not in the Mail application, nor by settings on individual Macs. Reports are consistent, even for those accessing with other mail clients, and non-Macs.

  • Questions about Mac. (Future Mac owner)

    Hi,
I have had my HP Vista running laptop for 2 months and am very upset with it. The DVD drive only works when it wants to and it is very slow starting up running a 1.8 ghz AMD Turion X2 process. I have used only 1/4 of the harddrive too!!! 1GB ram is installed in the computer. I do have a few questions to ask about the Mac.
    1. I have ISP Comcast and using a Motorola Surfboard modem and a Linksys WRT54G V8 Wireless router to connect to the internet on my PC. If I have it connected wirelessly on my PC, would I be able to connect to the internet wireless easily on the Mac using the same network and same 128-bit encryption? Would I have to reinstall the Linksys or Comcast software? Can you explain how I would connect to the internet wirelessly so I will know if I get a Mac?
    2. If I buy the Mac on an online retailer such as Amazon.com, would I still be able to receive support from an Apple genius bar?
    3. Can I get Limewire on the Mac and drag it on to iTunes? If Limewire can be used on the Mac, where can I download it?
    4. Can I get Windows Live Messenger on the Mac and use my current email and password? Would all of my contacts stay?
    5. Are there any other softwares besides for Microsoft Word to type up basic documents or reports for school?
    6. If I have my printer currently installed on my PC, can I easily reinstall it on the Mac?
Thanks very much for the help!

    Hi Nick
    1. All MacBooks come with built-in wireless networking, so all you'd have to do is click on the Airport icon which will appear in your menubar, choose your wireless network's name, and then type in the password. You won't need to reinstall any software, and both PC and Mac will be able to surf wirelessly at the same time. Make sure that your router is set to distribute IP addresses (using DHCP) - if, for example, your router's local IP address is 192.168.1.1, and your PC is currently at 192.168.1.2, then your Mac should have no problem connecting and getting an IP address. If you currently pass your public IP onto your PC, then you would need to reconfigure this at your router.
    2. Yes, you can always get free Apple Genius help, and your Apple warranty is for one year (90 days of phone support) wherever you buy it. You also have the option of buying AppleCare within the first year, for two extra years of coverage.
    3. Limewire is available for the Mac, from its website.
    4. MSN Messenger is available for the Mac (download here). A lot of Mac users prefer Adium, which can access all major chat networks, including MSN, and retrieve your contacts automatically.
    5. You can try NeoOffice, which is free and Office-compatible. Apple's iWork includes Pages, which is a fully-featured word processor. Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher edition is only $149 - also, Apple and/or Microsoft occasionally have deals on buying a Mac with Office, so check their websites.
    6. Most printers have Mac drivers, check your printer's website. If you can't find it, post back with the model number, and we'll try to help you out.
    Good luck!

  • A question about mac and innotabs

I bought a VTECH innotab for my son and I want to put music and videos for them on it. I understand about the DRM and itunes, but my question is....
is there a program for MAC OS X LION that turns my children's DVDs (rips them) into an a AVI file or MJPEG so to watch them on the innotab? I found so many for PC but nothing for a MAC.
    Thanks

It's like an ipad for 4 year olds. it's made by VTECH. It says the specs are
    File Type AVI
    Video Encoder MJPEG
    Display Size 480x272
    Frame Rate 15 bps
    Bit Rate 2400kbps
    Audio Encoder PCM
    Audio Channel Mono
    Sampling Rate 22.05kHz

  • Question about Mac mini

I have a powerbook, but I want to get a Mac Mini for the windows use instead of upgrading and buying a new desktop (by Windows ie Dell). The question is can I have a mac mini and use my powerbook screen for the monitor?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Not directly. The PowerBook cannot act as a monitor for the other computer.
And, the devices to connect the other computer to the PowerBook's USB or FireWire port (to pipe video in that way) would introduce such a lag that you would find games unplayable (and even controlling your mouse would be very difficult).
You could try a remote control program such as:
    http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/mac/index.html
You would then sit at the PowerBook, and remotely control the Mac Mini through a home network. Everything would appear on your screen as if you were sitting in-front of the Mac Mini.
Now, the program mentioned would only work for Mac OS to Mac OS remote control. But, there are Mac to Windows remote control options out there as well. But, they are a little trickier to set-up. But, one solution uses VNC networking and programs (of which there is a version for just about every platform / operating system).
But, the trick there is that you need to be able to see what you're doing on the Mac Mini computer long enough to setup the remote control program.
I'd suggest just finding another monitor for the other computer. They can be had for free and often only $5 if you buy them used. But, check around.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.

  • Question about Mac OS X reinstallation.

I bought my brothers Mid 2009 2.53GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro. It doesn't have Mac OS X Snow Leopard, so I just ordered it online. My question is should I first reinstall Mac OS X Leopard then install Mac OS X Snow Leopard? Or what do you guys think is best to do? Also When I reinstall OS X should I remove his password or during the installation will it remove it? In other words, please explain to me on how I should install OS X Snow Leopard. My last question is if I were to do a clean install of OS X Snow Leopard how do I do that and will the iLife programs be on there to?

You can simply stick in the SL DVD into the computer, double click its icon on desktop and follow the onscreen instructions. Nothing more than that.
The installer will not erase any other folders so all data and applications will remain as they were.
You can reset the password from the menu of the installer, this menu is the regular menu bar on top once you get past the 'choose language' screen.
There is no more clean install option in the SL installer. But if you reformat your disk to install the SL then of course everything on it will be erased including any iLife programs.
You can visit apple's website to learn more about what is included in the SL installation.

  • Question about mac mini with Mac OS X Server

    Hello forum,
first I want to say hello to each, because this is my first post in this forum.
I want to buy a mac mini, but I have further questions before i buy.
My Situation is, that currently I have a windows and a linux server (Windows => Exchange and Linux as a build server). Now i want to remove such servers and replace it with one mac mini server.
1.) Currently I have an exchange server...Is it possible to use Mac OS X Server to work like an Exchange server?
2.) I plan to use it as a build server which generates bundled software for Mac OS, Windows and Linux (Windows and Linux where running in VMWare Sphere)
    Is this possible with it?
    Thanks in advance
    Best Regards
    Roman80

1.) Currently I have an exchange server...Is it possible to use Mac OS X Server to work like an Exchange server?
That depends on how deeply-embedded you are into Exchange.
If by 'Exchange' you mean the basic email/messaging tools then yes, but if you mean the full MAPI client/SharePoint/messaging/sync/compliance tools then no.
2.) I plan to use it as a build server which generates bundled software for Mac OS, Windows and Linux (Windows and Linux where running in VMWare Sphere)
This isn't an option. vSphere will not install on a Mac Mini. The only VMWare option for the Mac Mini is VMWare Fusion, which does allow running client OS systems in a virtual machine, but does not support the full suite of VMWare functionality. Whether it has enough for your needs cannot be determined without more details of how you expect this to work - if it's just a matter of having a Visual Studio running in a Windows VM, and some other compiler running in a Linux VM then it may be possible, it just depends how deep you need to go.
