Question about MS SQL Server 2012 License on a server (renting/buying)

Hi,
I am currently paying about $300 per month to the hosting company for the MS SQL 2012 Standard Edition (for 4 cores) on my server, my question is, can I just buy MS SQL 2012 STD outright ( for example here http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/SQL-Server-Standard-Edition-2012/productID.281182400
) for around $3k and stop paying hosting company $300 monthly ?
If I am able to just buy it outright, is it possible to switch the licensing code to the new one that I bought without reinstalling or loosing database?
Thank you.

  • Downgrade Windows Server 2012 License to WIndows Server 2008 R2

    Hi all,
I'm looking to downgrade a windows server 2012 open license to windows server 2008 r2.
Thing is i do not have an existing windows server 2008 r2 VLK.
Can anyone confirm that this downgrade is possible, as clearinghouse is not helping by telling me that i can't buy windows server 2008 r2 licenses

Clearinghouse is right in stating you can't buy Windows Server 2008 R2
    licenses anymore.
You'll need a Windows Server 2008 R2 disk kit and product key. They'll sell those to you, since you already own a license that allows you to install and use the software as part of your Windows Server 2012 license.

  • Office on RDS on Server 2012 licensing

I have a client using RDS on Server 2012 to run proprietary software. They would like to begin allowing their sales force to connect to the server via iPads and run Office, which isn't yet installed on the server.
Thus far I've come to the understanding that what that will take is a volume license for Office installed on the server and an RDS license (they already have several) for every concurrent connection.
    My questions are -
    1) Am I right about installing the Office volume license on the server?
    2) Do they need Office installed on the client device as well? (I wouldn't think so, but some things I'm reading say otherwise)
    3) One of the reasons they want to switch to iPads (or Android devices or whatever) is to limit cost if their salesperson looses or breaks their device. So my question is, does the volume license count concurrent connections like the RDS license does or
is it somehow "tied" to the remote devices? For example -- If a salesperson does lose their device is it possible just to get another one and have them start using it without any additional licenses or is the license that was "tied" to
the old device just gone forever and we have to purchase another one to connect the new device? If the salesperson wants to RDS into the server from their home computer while their iPad is off and connect to their RD session would that require another license?
Or, if one of the people who connects to RDS who doesn't need to use Office accidentally opens "Word," will that license be then "tied" to their computer and wasted?
    Thank you for any help,
    Jeff Minch

    Hi Pure,
Your friend of a friend is incorrect.
The statement you've made about licences being locked applies to the RDS CAL (specifically a per computer CAL), not Office. As I said before, an Office licence has nothing whatsoever to do with an RDS CAL.
There are three kinds of "common" Offices licences:
    Retail.
    MAK.
    KMS.
Unless you're buying your copies of Office from a retail shop (or online shop) - and it doesn't sound like you are, then you can forget about retail keys.
MAK keys are accessed by one of the volume licencing agreement programs and are typically used by smaller businesses that don't have enough computers to be able to access the KMS approach to licencing or for clients that will not be able to talk to
a KMS server at least every 180 days.
MAK keys involve a once-off activation and then they never renew the activation again. This makes them ideal for things like non-Internet kiosks, field laptops and the like. The once-off activation can happen with the client being Internet-connected for
this once off activation or via an offline activation using the telephone or VAMT (Volume Activation Management Tool).
KMS keys come in two flavours:
KMS host activation key, which is used to create a KMS "server".
KMS client key, which is a standard key that can be applied to as many volume licencing copies of Windows/Office ad you like, and which "instructs" the client to activate against the KMS server above.
There are a number requirements to be met before you can successfully deploy a KMS host, but it's not worth going into depth here about it as the only point to be made is that yet again, it has nothing to do with RDS licencing. The closest it would get to
being relevant is if the copies of Office installed on the RDS Session Hosts were activated via a KMS host.
I think you need to have a read-up on RDS licencing and the expiration process:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732416.aspx
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/3efeee70-9d23-4477-8b94-23e2643dd5bf/controlling-rds-user-cal-expiry?forum=winserverTS
Going back to your iPad clients, you need to determine whether you're using per device or per user licencing before you can figure out a way forward as far as RDS licencing goes, but again, this has nothing to do with Office licences being retained
on the device, as that scenario is not possible as Office activation doesn't work like that.
Perhaps the easiest way to depict the difference for you is to understand that RDS licencing functions outside of the RDS session while Office licencing functions within it, which is why a device being removed/lost has nothing to do with Office at all.
So long as you remember that you need to buy as many Office licences as there are clients connecting to the RDS environment, you can activate Office any way you like.
    Cheers,
    Lain

  • Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation error while installing SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise edition on Windows Server 2012 R2 standard VM server

I've been trying fresh installation of SQL Server 2008 R2 enterprise on Windows Server 2012 R2 standard VM server several times for two weeks, but always get the error "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation". At first, I attempted
to install all features, but failed several times. So I decided to try install just Database Engine service, and still fail at the SqlBrowserConfigAction_Install_ConfigNonRC_Cpu32, with the error "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation".
I remote login to server with my admin domain account. This account is in server local Administrators group. I
    1. Right-click on setup.exe file | properties | Compatibility tab | select compatibility to Windows 8.Then click OK.
    2. Right-click on setup.exe file | Run as Administrator, to start the Installation Center.
I have the document of my installation steps and zip file of the installation logs, if you need to take a look.
    Appreciate for any help!
    ntth

    Hi ntth,
"Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation"
The above error is always related to the Windows account SID mapping. I recommend you login into Windows using another Windows account which has administrative privileges and run SQL Server setup using that Windows account.
Besides, please note that we need to apply SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 or a later update when installing SQL Server Windows Server 2012 R2. For more information, please review this
    KB article.

  • Migrate FROM Server 2012 R2 Essentials TO Server 2012 R2 Standard

We have a new server with 2012 R2 Essentials. Failed to realize Essentials need for Domain Controller role and Deltek Vision Software running on new server does not run on Domain Controller.  We are prepared to upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Standard,
and have read the "Transition.." article in the Tech Net Library, but it does not go into much detail.  Need to know what else is involved and does the transition remove the FSMO requirement?   Does the transition wipe out all
programs and SQL Server installations? I have found articles on migrating from standard to essentials, but not the other way around.

    Hi,
When you talk about the "Transition" means Transition from Windows Server 2012 Essentials to Windows Server 2012 Standard?
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj247582.aspx
If you talk about the migration, i think you could do the migration process.

    hello again,
meanwhile I was lucky to find this article about Idenity Mapping in TechNet in the Storage Team Blog:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/10/09/nfs-identity-mapping-in-windows-server-2012.aspx
Likely to be overseen at the end of one paragraph it says:
"Client for NFS does not support NFS V4.1 in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012"
Question : Is this an official statement and is it still valid with most recent
Windows Server 2012 R2 that NFS client does NOT support NFSv4.x  ??

  • Disappearing disk space Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise

I've got an interesting problem with a virtual machine in our VMWare environment.  It is Windows Server 2012 R2 with SharePoint Server 2013 Enterprise installed.  I started out with a 60GB disk and it started running out of space, so I increased
it in VMWare and extended the partition to 100GB.  Well, that lasted for a bit and so I extended it again.  I've done this 3 or 4 times and now I've got a 160GB disk with about 2-3GB of space remaining (and it started with 10GB remaining).
WinDirStat shows 105GB of <Unknown> space being used, which is probably my issue.  However, I can't determine what this is and it keeps growing like a tapeworm.  The context menu on the <Unknown> files has all the options disabled,
so WinDirStat doesn't appear to have access to whatever the file(s) is/are.  I've performed several chkdsk /f on the C: drive and nothing bad is reported.  I don't have any restore points and am not running VSS (that I'm aware of).  The pagefile
reports as being about 4.9GB, so that's not the issue.  No large files are shown anywhere and my explorer settings are set to show me all files, including system files.
When I try to run WinDirStat with elevated permissions, it hangs and becomes unresponsive.
I've even resorted to running CCleaner to see if it found anything, but it simply found the standard temp files and such...about 1GB.
I'm pulling my hair out...and I don't have much to start with.  Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Russ

It appears that somehow, Microsoft Fusion Assembly binding logging was turned on and many of the temp folders located at c:\users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\InetCache\IE were filling up with hundreds of thousands of Fusion HTM log files.
This is controlled by an entry in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion\ForceLog which was set to 1.  Hopefully, setting it back to zero will fix the issue.  As a result of figuring this out, I have recovered almost 80GB of disk
space occupied by the log files.
I thought WinDirStat would show me what I needed to know, but it turns out TreeSize (which I've used in the past) works much better.

  • SQL Svr 2012 licensing question

    Hello expert,
We have a licensing sql server 2012 enterprise with 4 cores. We plan to upgrade server to 16 cores. We have some questions:
    1. Do we need to buy another cores for SQL Server? Can we keep using SQL Server after we add the new hardware?
    2. Before buy the new licensing for SQL Server, we would like to test the performance with 16 cores. Is it allowed to use SQL Server as usual? Will any errors be thrown, if we add the new cores?
    3. How to buy the licensing for the new cores?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Virtual SQL Guest servers Licensing Data Center Server?

how we license Virtual SQL Guest servers, is that through Data Center Server that we install on the ESX Host/clusters?

    Hi Marissa,

    Hi Folks
Questions: I have one infrastructure with Operations Manager 2012 R2, two Management Server.
Now, I'm trying install feature operations manager reporting in SQL Server.
added the OMDRA and OMDWWA accounts as a local administrator of the SQL server.
I'm using media installation Operations Manager 2012 R2, but I'm received erros, any idea? Or I need using media installation Operations Manager 2012 SP1?
    Thanks

    Hi There,
I had seen a similar issue here. The error log has a point mentioning " ApplyUpdates: Unable to load QFE file."
I saw this error on this below thread as well.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a10ce69e-2584-4a4d-86b9-64ee8c5bf85d/reporting-services-installation-failing?forum=operationsmanagerreporting
He said he fully re installed the whole setup and it solved the issue.
But i understand that is quiet difficult and complicated to do.
    =================================================
I would suggest you check the permissions again
1.Does your data reader and writer account have SQL permissions i.e sysadmin permissions ?
2.Also is your SQL server in the same AD Domain or is it in a different domain ?
3.Is the SQL Server scale of deployment joined ?
    4. Did you look in the ops manager event logs ? Can you check and post them here plz.
    5. Is the operationsmanager DB and warehouse DB as well hosted on the same SQL server where you are trying to install reporting.

  • Perform Forced Manual Failover of Availability Group (SQL Server 2012) and WSFC (Windows Server Failover Cluster)

I have a scenario with the three nodes with server 2012 standard, each running an instance of SQL Server 2012 enterprise, participate in a
single Windows Server Fail-over Cluster (WSFC) that spans two data centers.
If the nodes in the primary data center are unavailable due to data center outage. Then how I can able to access node in the WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster) in the secondary disaster recovery data center automatically with some script.
I want to write script that can be able to check primary data center by pinging some IP after every 5 or 10 minutes.
If that IP is unable to respond then script can be able to Perform Forced Manual Fail-over of Availability Group (SQL Server) and WSFC (Windows Server Fail-over Cluster)
Can you please guide me for script writing for automatic fail-over in case of primary data-center outage?

+1 to David's comment. I would not suggest to run a script automatically. During such failover you might have data loss and decision has to be made with business owners during disaster.
During such situation, you need to start cluster service in force quorum mode (/fq switch) and then perform manual failover of AG to DR site.

  • SQL standard 2012 licenses for SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
We are implementing SCCM R2 for customer, is the license for SQL standard 2012 included in price for SCCM licenses, we have around 5000 mahcines to be managed also a Secondary with express edition installed .
can secondary and primary have different version of SQL for replication ? or it should be same version?
is there a requirement for SQL standard like processor (How many number of processer can be used if this
license is free of cost for SCCM2012  (any limitations ) )  Is license cost calculated based on processor ?
also how many DB can be installed with standard on single instance ? can we use it for WSUS, MDT DB?
how will i get this SQL standard free version from Microsoft any download location.
    Please advise.
    Thanks
    Shuaib

SQL Server Standard is included with all System Center products. As Tim said CPUs are irrelevant in this case.
You can use whatever versions of SQL you like as long as they are supported. However isn't it always best to standardise.
You can install as many databases as you like as long as they are System Center related - the ones you mentioned are OK.
The customer should download SQL from their Microsoft Volume Licensing Center. If they choose the SQL that is bundled with System Center it will be pre-populated with a license key.

  • SQL Server 2012 Install Errors on Server 2012

I am getting an error when installed a new copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 on a newly created Server 2012 that has all its updates.  About 90% of the way through the installation this is the error I received below:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
    The following error has occurred:
Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.
Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

    Second Error when continuing:
TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
    The following error has occurred:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Click 'Retry' to retry the failed action, or click 'Cancel' to cancel this action and continue setup.

I clicked cancel on both errors but I don't know if this will impact my application. After the installation completes I can see everything passed except the Database Engine. Any thoughts on this issue?
