Question about multiple Airport Extremes

I have a brand new Airport Extreme connected to my cable modem in my office. I put my older dual-band Airport Extreme in my kitchen to extend my network wirelessly. It wasn't extending very well so I tried to configure it to extend my network over ethernet. (I have an ethernet jack in my office with cable running to the kitchen where there is another jack. I know that jack works because I was successfully sending ethernet into my living room from my office with the newer Airport Extreme). When I try to change the configuration to accomplish this, by plugging the old AE in, in my office, I am presented with choices of existing networks to have it extend via ethernet. I chose the name of my network and tried to complete the configuaration, but when the old AE restarts, it is flashung yellow.
What am I doing wrong?

Never mind. I figured this out using another discussion.

  • Multiple Airport Extremes with different WiFi networks

Hello.  I'm not sure how to word this question, but here it goes...
In our office we have 2 independent internet services.  Each one is connected to its own Airport Extreme.  One of our internet connections went down and I am wondering if it is possible to use the first Airport Extreme connected to the good internet and send a signal to the other Airport Extreme that lost its internet and use it as it was, so we don't have to change all of our printers and computers WiFi logins...  I want the second Extreme to just stay the same network name but get it's internet from the other Extreme..  Does that make sense?
    Thanks

Unfortunately, it would not be possible to say whether this might work....or even give you an educated guess.......without having a lot of information about how the office network(s) were originally designed and set up, what security was used, whether MAC Address Authentication was used (common in most commercial networks) along with any number of other things that may be involved.
Best bet would be to get the with IT folks who designed or administer the network for an answer.

  • How to set up multiple Airport Extremes with 1 SSID

    Equipment:
         Office with 2 floors
         1 Modem
         1 Router
         1 Switch
5 Airport Extremes (2014 models, each in Bridge mode)
    Network layout:
         Modem -> Router -> Switch -> 5 Airport Extremes
    Current Setup:
Each Airport has their own unique SSID (ex. 1st Floor - Conference, 2nd Floor - Content, etc.). Connectivity is fine with this setup, different users join the closest Airport/SSID to them.  Only issue is that user needs to switch to different SSID's as they move around the office.
    Objective:
Set each Airport to the same SSID so people don't need to switch to different SSID's as they move around the office.
    Problem:
I attempted to set each Airport to the same SSID. No issues with the setup, everything looks good in Airport Utiltiy. The problem is that some users connect with no issues, but when other users try to connect, they are asked to input a password, which is repeatedly rejected (even though the passwords are set up correctly on all Airport Extremes, and input correctly on all devices).
I think this has to do with the 50 wireless user limit on the Airport Extremes, it looks like an Airport is maxed out at 50, and when a device tries to connect, it is rejected. I looked for a way to limit the wireless range on each Airport, but no option exists in Airport Utility.

Don't know what kind of main router that you have, but try setting the DHCP Lease Time to 1 hour if it is not already set to that limit.
If it is already set to 1 hour, lower it to the next available setting and update the router.
Then power off the entire network, then power up the main router first, and let it run a few minutes, then start the AirPorts one at a time about a minute apart.

  • Best option for multiple Airport Extreme base station setup

I'm looking for the best way to setup my wireless network at home. I have a fairly large two story home with some ethernet cable run to various rooms upstairs and downstairs. Basically I was thinking if I could use some of the wired connections in my home the wireless network might be faster (instead of just rebroadcasting the wireless signal with multiple airports).
In my laundry room (downstairs) I have my cable modem, an 8 port switch and my airport extreme. Currently, the cable modem is hooked up to my Airport Extreme (via ethernet cable) and then I have an ethernet cable running from the airport to the switch. The various ethernet cables that run through my home are then plugged into that switch.
In my office (upstairs) I have a live ethernet jack (one that runs down to that switch downstairs), but instead of having the airport plugged into that ethernet jack I have the second airport extreme just "extending the network". Is there a way to utilize the wired connection inorder to have a stronger signal to broadcast for the upstairs wifi?
I've seen WDS mentioned before, is that what I need to setup? Basically, I just want to know what the best way is to setup the wireless network to keep the speeds as good as they can be.
    Thanks!

Good news, you can use Ethernet to connect the Apple routers together.
Perform a Hard Reset on the upstairs AirPort Extreme by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds and then releasing. Allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Connect the Ethernet cable to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort. ( I assume that you have tested the cable by connecting a computer to it directly to make sure that it is working).
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen on the Mac
Wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Just below that, click on AirPort Extreme  (the example below shows an AirPort Express)
AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the AirPort will be configured to extend your other AirPort router.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the AirPort...(you can use the same device name as before if you wish), then click Next.
Now AirPort Setup will indicate that the AirPort is being configured to extend using Ethernet.
When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
    You are all set.

  • Dumb Question about multiple BSSIDs

This is probably a dumb question, but enquiring minds want to know...
When using Yosemite's built-in Wireless Diagnostics scan I see many unique WiFi BSSIDs (MAC addresses) associated with my Time Capsule: 5 for my Guest Network and 6 for my "main" network. I see that not all have the same 802.11 protocol, but not all have unique 802.11 protocols. Also I see my "main" network is the 802.11ac network.
    So my questions are:
    - Why are there so many different BSSIDs and how should I interpret them?
    - Which of these BSSIDs are "relevant" that I should pay attention to?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

Why are there so many different BSSIDs and how should I interpret them?
The 5 GHz band on the main network is one unique BSSID
The 2.4 GHz band on the main network is one unique BSSID
If you have the Guest Network setup......
The 5 GHz band on the guest network is one unique BSSID
The 2.4 GHz band on the guest network is one unique BSSID
If you have multiple AirPort routers, repeat the information above for each router.
Which of these BSSIDs are "relevant" that I should pay attention to?
Personally, I pay no attention to this, but some users place great importance on this.
The BSSID tells you which AirPort.....if you have multiple AirPorts....and which band....2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.....that you are connected to at the current time....as well as whether you are connected to the "main" network, or the "guest" network.....if you have enabled the guest function.

  • I bought a Canon 8400F scanner- question about multiple photos being scanne

    Hi,
I have a question about about scanning photos. It was posted that if you scan something with multiple photos, it will separate the pictures.
If I put 6 pictures on the scanner, will it automatically scan them and separate them, or is there something in the software where I select it to separate each picture.
    Thank you

I'm not at my Mac right now but it should be real obvious in the CanoScan software. Open it up and play around. It will jump out at you.
You don't tell it to select "each" picture. You merely tell it that there are multiple pictures and it then does everything automatically.

  • Multiple airport Extremes and RADIUS

I've got a rather large network of Airport Extreme Base stations.  7 to be exact.  Currently they're authenticated via WPA.  I'd like to upgrade them to use the RADIUS service in OS X Server.  (fully up to date)
Can someone who has set this up in practice share some experience and things to watch for?
Right now, I'm using a DLink DFL-210 router, DHCP Server on the Mac OS X Server, and Open Directory, also on the Mac Server.  As far as I understand, I will not be able to set up the Base Stations with this configuration as the airport needs to be set up in DHCP and NAT mode in order to perform the setup.  (the server won't see the Airports unless they're in this mode)
Also, as far as I understand, it seems that I'll need to have the airport extreme also be the router!
Is it possible to set up the first or multiple ones on an "mock" network, then move it over?  What will I have to watch for when I install it on the new system?  Certificates are going to be an issue as well, won't they?

    Hi gracoat,
I've got a similar setup to you. I currently run 8 airport extreme wifi routers (various generations) at our offices and everything is behind a primary sonicwall hardwired firewall router. What you will need to do is actually activate RADIUS on the OS X server and then manually setup each airport extreme to use WPA2 Enterprise for their wifi security. Then you will enter your os x server address into each airport for the WPA2 Enterprise settings.

  • I just have questions about the AirPort Express and how it works.

My household Wi-Fi is not the strongest in  my room and I found out about the AirPort Express and I read the overvie, but I still have some questions on how it works, how its setup and other questions as well.

The AirPort Express will not wirelessly extend the signal from another router unless that router is also an Apple product.
Not sure what other questions you might have, but we'll try to answer if you want to ask.

  • On a network with multiple airports (extreme, express, + time capsule), do they all have to be "guest" capable devices in order to offer guest networking?

Here's the situation: I have three older devices:
    a1254 Time Capsule
    a1134 airport extreme
    a1264 express
none of these support guest networking, according to Apple. If I add a newer Extreme (3rd gen or higher) that support guest networks, will that be possible to offer to guests within range of the Extreme, -OR- do I have to upgrade my entire network of Apple wifi devices? Help appreciated, esp if you have such a setup. thanks!

The problem here is guest network only works if the Apple Router is indeed the main router.. you cannot setup guest network on a bridged router. Although it appears you can, it doesn't actually work.
You could modify the network setup..
Use one device dedicated to a secondary guest network. This would actually work better than using guest but you should have some way to prevent access to computers from guest.. that may be easy or hard depending on the modem you are using.

  • One Wireless network, Multiple Airport Extremes

What I would like to do is set up a single network SSID using lets say 4 Airport Extremes (5th gen) in an office environment. All of these Airports would have direct ethernet connections to the switch. Is this possible with the 802.11n spec and the newer Airport Extremes?? It would make my life a lot easier if I could have one SSID and one password to administer for my users instead of 4 different SSID's.
Back in the day of 802.11g there was a way, with Airport Extremes to create a WDS (although a bit slow), now in the days of 802.11n, WDS is not a good way to go as it hamstrings the bandwidth of the unit.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.
    -Erik

Is this possible with the 802.11n spec and the newer Airport Extremes??
Sure, you will be setting up what is known as a "roaming" network.  Computers will stay on the same network as they "roam" from one area to another and automatically switch to the wireless access point that is providing the best signal.
This is the absolute best way to setup a wireless network for maximum bandwidth.
The basics here would include configuring each AirPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name (SSID), same security settings and same wireless network password. Make sure that each AirPort Exteme is configured in Bridge Mode to allow the configuration to operate properly.
If you need step by step details, post back to let us know what operating sysem the Mac or PC is running that will be used to configure the AirPort Extemes.

  • Question about multiple application modules.

    Hello,
Suppose I have 2 database schema’s. For both schemas I have 1 application module. All view objects are in the same project.
For each application module I have an application definition.
Is it possible to link between these two applications? Because sometimes these database schema’s link to each other and you would like to jump from one application directly to the other.
For example you have orders locates in 1 DB schema and customers in another DB schema.
You would want to jump from the order directly to the customer details in the second schema.
Is this possible? Or do I need to make nested application modules etc?
I can find very little info about this; the JHS def guide does not offer much information about multiple application modules etc.
    -Anton

    Anton,
Yes, you can jump aroundd as you like.
You just can't use view links between VO's based on different db schema tables.
Nesting AM's doesn't help there, the DB connection of the top-level AM will be used.
Why don't you create synomyms for the tables in the other schema?

  • Fios+Moch+Multiple Airport Extreme/Express Units

I currently have the following setup:
    - Verizon Fios Router (actiontec). Wifi is on but rarely use the SSID.
    - Airport Extreme connected via ethernet to Fios Router which broadcasts to other aiprort expresses in my apt.  Setup to "create wireless network"
    - The airport express units "extend" the network and is in bridge mode. Printer is connected to one of the airport express units.
While this works, the wifi connections in other rooms is very weak as I live in an old building.  Download speeds of 2-3mbps vs 40-50 when I am near my main airport extrme.  The express units help a little but the speed suffers.
So I bought 2 MOCA adapters to help.  If I attach the airport express units to these adapters the speed is excellent, except it uses the SSID from the Fios Router which makes it difficult to print and use other features of the apple routers.
My understanding is that if I disable the router on the verizon actiontec I lose functionality of the tv guide, on demand etc.
    Any recommended solutions?

The express plugged into the MOCA unit should be in bridge.
It should also be setup to create a wireless network. Use the same SSID as the Apple Extreme.
It does however sound like the extreme is in the wrong mode.. it should also be in bridge.. you do not mention that.. just that it creates a wireless network which is correct.

  • Connectivity question regarding two AirPort Extremes

I just upgraded to an AirPort Extreme 5th gen. Can I take my old AE 1st gen upstairs and wirelessly connect it to the new 5th gen in order to widen my wifi?  If so, how difficult is it to do?

The setup is more involved using OS X 10.6.8
Temporarily, move the older AirPort Extreme (AEBS) to the same room where the new AEBS is located.
Power off the old AEBS if it is "on"
Hold in the reset button on the back of the old AEBS first....and keep holding for 9-10 seconds while you simultaneosuly plug the power plug back into the old AEBS
Release the reset button after the 9-10 second hold period and allow a full minute for the old AEBS to restart to slow, blinking amber light
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the old AEBS (you may be asked to "switch" networks to do this, that is OK"
    Click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab located below the row of icons
Enter a device name that you want to use for the old AEBS
Enter a device password and verify
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Set Wireless Mode to Extend a wireless network
Under Wireless Network, enter the name of the new AEBS network if it is not already selected
Enter a check mark in the box next to Allow Wireless Clients
Under Wireless Network Password, enter the same password that you use for the new AEBS wireless network
    Verify Password
Click Update and wait a full minute for a green light on the old AEBS
Now move the old AEBS to a location that is approximately half way between the new AEBS and the general area that needs more wireless coverage and power up the old AEBS
Make sure that you are logged on to the new AEBS wireless network and test things out
    Report on your results

  • Using multiple airport extremes

I have an extra airport extreme. can I use that instead of buying airport express to extend range?

There are a number of ways that you can extend the AirPorts. Please check out the following Apple Support article to get a few details on those options to see which would work best for you. If you still need any assistance with any of them, just post back.
