  • G5 Hard Drive Spins out of control

Every so often (like today) since the day I brought this G5 home, the Hard Drive starts to spin out of control (whether in use or asleep). I then have to force it down. When I re-start, it's just fine. This probably happens once every three months. I could never get an answer from Mac - any ideas why this happens?

Have to say I have zero idea what an out of control spin would be (off the race track of course).
But with any system or hard drive issue, how about repairing the drive directory with Disk Warrior.
Force shutdowns generally cause directory problems. A Safe Boot helps, some. Not enough.
I would not say it is fine, though, and Apple First Aid doesn't do enough.

  • Safari Spinning Out of Control - Why Doesn't This Get Better?!!

For a very extended period, Safari has been spinnin out of control memory-wise - no other OS I use does this, not does any other browser I use on OSX.  This goes on and on and on and on, with no real remidiation coming from Apple.  It is maddening and ruiining the usability of using the MAC and OSX.  It may be due to Flash, or Flash and Apple's refusal to properly work with Adobe - Flash is out there - it is on a huge number of websites and not just for entertainment - it cannot be avoided - also transactional sites such as StubHub use it.  If I have ten or fifteen web pages open, Safari, between Safari Web Content, Safari and Flash, can take three or four gigabytes or even more, and Flash is the least of them.  It does not happen with Firefox.  With Safari spinning out of control, the entire device slows down.  This has been going on for far far far too long.  It happen on my MacBook and my iMac.  When is this going to get resolved?  I am starting to despise using the Mac and OSX.

  • A Question about Windows games with boot camp and system requirements

I don't plan to play many games on my Mac, but after seeing what can be done with it, I've been entertaining the idea of picking up a Windows game or 2 to play in Boot Camp (considering picking up a XP PRO with SP2 for this).
My question is about the listed systed system requirements and how they might apply to my Mac Pro. I have a dual 2.26.
As a specific example, I was looking at the game Fallout 3. The box lists a 2.4ghz processor required but I've read on this forum about people running it great with less on their Mac.
So I was wondering what I would need to consider when looking at those requirements or if games in that range do indeed run well...

    Thanks Kap, you're always helpful.
That's exactly what I was wondering. How the requirement on the box applied to having an 8 core at a lower clock speed.
I was looking at XP home at amazon and newegg, but haven't been able to tell if they are 64 or 32 (unless that means just install that version from the disc).
It's nothing pressing, just something I was entertaining for now.

  • [SOLVED] Question About Downgrading to a Spinning Drive from SSD

I currently have a laptop with an SSD and Arch Linux, and it's aligned specifically for SSD and configured as such. I ordered a brand new laptop, and decided that I will move the SSD from my current laptop to my new one, and put a spinning drive in my current laptop. I was thinking about using Clonezilla to clone my current Arch install on my current laptop SSD to a spinning drive (since I can't afford another SSD right now). However, since my current laptop installation is aligned for an SSD, will that cause problems if I clone it to a spinning drive? My spare spinning hard drives were made before the 4k transition, I believe. I would be putting it on an older 500GB Seagate. I'd rather not start over with a new configuration if I don't have to.

graysky wrote:No need... Partition the new drive and just.use raync to transfer.  Clonezilla is overkill IMO.
The thing is, I'm very familiar with Clonezilla, I use it quite often. I'm not familiar with raync.

Sounds like a good oppurtunity to switch to LVM!
But, like graysky said, there's nothing to worry about.  The only way you would run into problems is if you tried to use dd.
I think that's what Clonezilla uses, isn't it?

  • Equium L20-198: Question about BIOS and s-video out

I seem to be having two problems with this and that is when I put the bios password on above it on the screen is rubbish, scrammble symbols. Also it is supposd to come with s-video out but there is a black plastic in place its place

    Hello
I know definitely that S-Video port is not available on every Equium L20 model. Please check the notebook specification although I think that your model should have S-Video port. Please contact your local dealer and talk with them about this.
Your unit has valid warranty and if you think that there is some technical problem contact service partner and explain them the problem. Please dont make some BIOS update experiments if you are not familiar with this procedure.

  • Question about Nexuiz game? Sorry if this is wrong forum.

If any here has played nexuiz, please tell me how to get past the bot games. Maybe I downloaded the wrong version or game but I can't seem to get to anything other bot matches. I want the regular doom or quake type of game and not the bots. I don't have many resources and my internet is very expensive. I work on a ship. The alien traps forum won't let me register to ask my questions there.
    Thanks

I have been to the game developer forum and they are not accepting new registrations at this time. So with nowhere else to turn I came here hoping to here from the person who suggested nexuiz in the first place.
Didn't mean to upset anyone. I will be needing your knowledge in the future. Don't want to burn bridges.
    Thanks

  • Question about downloading games on macbook?

I'm trying to download specifically quake and doom games. I get the message that stuffit cannot open the files. I need to install from the original installer. Don't understand as I have downloaded stuffit from the site.

It seems to be a problem with the actual program that you're using, not something of Apple's. You should contact the developer instead, if you can. You'll get a much better answer that way.

  • Question About the New Update Due out this Month

Hi I would like to know when Apple, does come out with the New update this month will it be for the New iPhone, do out on June 9th,2008 or for the People who have the Old iPhone, that will then be out dated?
    Thanks
    Lisa*

Firmware update 2.0 will be for all existing iPhones, and for all iPod Touch(es), but iPod Touch owners must pay a nominal fee for the update due to accounting reasons.
Firmware update 2.0 will likely be pre-installed on the 2nd generation iPhone. If not, it can be installed as an update the same as for the first generation iPhone.
Updates for the first generation iPhone will not stop after the 2nd generation iPhone is released. Both will be running the same operating system, with the only hardware difference we know for certain included with the 2nd generation iPhone is a 3G chipset making it a 3G phone.
The first generation iPhone will not become outdated when the 2nd generation iPhone is released. There are some people in the U.S. that don't live in an area where at&t has 3G network coverage, and where at&t doesn't have plans to add 3G network coverage this year or the next.
You purchase a new computer this week, and a new and improved version of the same computer model is released within 6 months or a year. This doesn't make the computer you purchased this week outdated. The same applies to the iPhone.

  • A question about video game and drivers for Nvidia

I have recently bought the parallels program and installed Win 7 on my Mac. So far so good. Then I installed a game called Champions Online (PC based). The problem is that when I load the game, it crashes with an error message saying basically that my drivers are not working properly (that's the interpretation from the support team at Champions). They suggested that I delete and reload my drivers for the Nvidia card. How do I do that? If that doesn't work, does anyone have any suggestions as to the solution to my problem?

Parallels and other virtual environments are not meant for games and 3D intensive applications. Run Windows through Boot Camp if you want to play games.

  • Some questions about running games under Win7 on my MBP 15`

    Hello everyone,
I bought my MBP right after the publish of Snow Leopard last September with a updated CPU and Hard drive. I didn't think of playing games on it at first, but I can't resists the COD6MW2 and installed Win7. It worked pretty well and everything went fine, except for the unbearable heat, which really made me worry. I already knew that it was normal to have a high temperature while running Windows on Macs, but I had no idea whether that heat would eventually burn down my graphic card or something, as happened on many other brands of computers. (I knew a poor kid who played COH on his Dell and got his graphic card burnt down, like the early versions of Xbox360) In fact, my hard drive broke last week and I suspected that it was due to my playing games. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thank you!

I don't know if your problem is still actual, if it is, here is what I did:
    1. Install smcFanControl in OSX (http://www.eidac.de/)
    2. Launch it. A little icon will appear in the menu bar. Click it and choose "preferences". In the Drop-Down-Menu, select "Higher RPM" and then push the sliders all the way up to 6000. Click save.
    3. You should now hear your fans. Quit all applications and reboot into Windows (you really need to reboot, this way the fans will stay on, otherwise they turn off). Now the temperature stays a little lower. I played MW 2 for several hours and didn't have any problems.
    4. If you're done playing, reboot into OSX, launch smcFanControl and turn the fans down again.

  • A quick question about the N95's TV Out

Since the headset and the tv out go into the same entry I was wondering what is the maximum power of the headphones that i can put in ?? (if possible give me the precise number)

Headphones are not measured by power but by impedance. The N95 and other similar devices expect 32Ω headphones to be plugged in.

  • Question about onPress  button continuous

    hi all,
i just want to know how can i click the mouse and don't
release , the follwing function can increase the photo size
    continuous.
    wong

If you want an action to repeat, you'll have to tell Flash to
do that over and over again. An onRelease event is just a single
event, it only happens once. Your user will have to keep pressing
the button over and over. Alternately, you can use an enterFrame
method, or a setInterval() method, to create a repeating event.
    Here's an example using enterFrame:
