Question about nodes, what are they, why weren't unused ones erased, why is my node map invalid?

What is this crap in Disk Utility?
What is the freaking point of a journalled filesystem if it's useless at...it's job / function for existing / fixing it's files and/or system of filing them? What a joke.
Why can't I repair or verify disk permissions?
Why does Apple know nothing about Apple products.

If you can't repair the disk using DU, get something stronger, such as DiskWarrior or Tech Tools Pro.
For info on disk nodes, peruse the hits from a google search for hard disk node structure.
Thanks for responding baltwo, inspite of my frustrated tone there. Unfortunately the write-protected boot volume that comes off the servers delivers stuff like this. I've been Google searching for 10 months and bleeding eyes give me two emotions:
1. Sadness, at how much I've been lied to - I wonder what they get for it
2. Frustration, at directions to achieve solutions / resolutions - that simply don't work. Command lines give more error messages, should I  Google them as well? Obv i have.
And the ride begins again at 1. I'll get diskwarrior.
I went to get DiskWarrior and it's $100 for a software utility. I laughed cause, whatever. If it worked a year ago, and I bought it, I could buy 1000 Disk Warriors and still be in the black. I've only bought maybe 200 utilities. And paid for the free ones, dearly - I suspect.
I was about to buy it obviously, but my system crashed before I could burn more cash. I put it on my list of "Online Things to Do" for when I got online.
I dunno. I'm not posting here to bag Disk Warrior, at least they're honest. But I can't see how this could possibly be worth $5, or even the hassle.
DiskWarrior recovers your files including your photos, music and videos.
DiskWarrior is the safest, most technologically advanced, most powerful utility to eliminate directory damage and recover your files, folders and documents.
I want to do the opposite, to data.
DiskWarrior cures those cryptic errors reported by Disk Utility.
Messages from your Mac such as "Invalid node structure" and "Keys out of order" may seem mysterious or even scary but DiskWarrior fixes these problems and many, many more.
Interesting. And the reason I was going to buy it. But I note their claim is a little cryptic. I have unexplained keymapping that Apple decline to explain. And if I understand nodes correctly, Disk Warrior will be in use very often. I'd prefer to find a more elegant solution, to corruption.
DiskWarrior uses a different approach to disk directory repair than other programs.
DiskWarrior is not a disk repair program in the conventional sense. Instead of patching the original directory, it uses a patent-pending technology to quickly build a new replacement directory using data recovered from the original directory, thereby recovering files, folders and documents that you thought were lost and that no other program could recover.
No, I don't think I want that. My systems fill up with millions of files due to DDoS which is very much, Distributed. Around. I don't want to recover anything. I just can't afford to keep buying new systems which last a day, or less. Yes, it's quite the spot - I get that. It could very well kill me in the not-too-distant future. But then I've read the Terms & Conditions for this forum after - truthfully - I mean, honestly - breaking them, so I'm probably not being 'melodramatic'.
DiskWarrior is the only product that finds all of your data.
Its patent-pending method always results in a perfectly rebuilt directory without any errors and that contains all of your file and folder data.
This is an interesting claim because I have millions of errors, and I post less than 0.1% of them. I wonder how they define filesystem "errors".
DiskWarrior is the highest rated and wins more awards.
The reviews are in! See what the press is already saying about the new DiskWarrior 4.
I read a thread about hidden Directory nodes on this forum where the OP and the Helpful Responder had a discussion ENTIRELY exclusive to his attempt to hide the log file telling him about them. You'll be happy to know, the thread had a Disney ending. I celebrated by vomiting up.
Can you afford to waste your hard-earned money on any other utility?
You can try other utilities but you'll probably end up needing DiskWarrior to recover your data. You'll save money buying DiskWarrior first.
I have literally no doubt this is true. And I suspect I'd be in much the same spot right now, starts with SCR and ends with EWWed. Because...
While started from the DiskWarrior DVD, you cannot repair the permissions of a Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.7 startup disk.
lol. But not really. Not really, because no lame excuses given. No excuses given, at all. I think I know what that means.
DiskWarrior is not a disk repair program in the conventional sense. It does not attempt to solve all of the possible problems that can occur with a disk. It specializes in eliminating directory errors - the most common problems Mac OS users have with their disks.
It fixes any problem with master directory blocks and alternate master directory blocks (HFS), volume headers and alternate volume headers (HFS Plus), volume bitmaps, catalog trees, and extents trees.
Seriously?
Again, I have to express my 'confusion' about what possible purpose is served - as in what is the freaking POINT! - of having a journaled file system, that 'seems' to only create errors and cannot keep it's files in any kind of functional or systemized fashion, or keep its operating system operational. It kinda makes me want to scream, actually - but I understand Mac OS users clearly aren't phased. They probably think it's their problem to solve.
lol I give up. All of the above was just stuff I noticed trying to find the sentence that makes everything else redundant. On the website last week - but heck if I can find it now - was the bland statement that
Disk Warrior cannot be expected to function on an encrypted or networked filesystem.
Nine months ago, I cussed out some 'Anti'-malware scammers (ESET or TrendMicro or they're all the same) because they attempted to ridicule my surprise that they would be crooks who claim they can do a thing they cannot - possibly - hope to do; namely, be 'competitive' against malware writers who've heard of encryption.
Since that day, I've been asking every crook in this industry (obviously, I didn't know they were crooks when I was giving them money - otherwise associating with them) how they have the secret no one else has. Every utility, every claim, all a ridiculous joke when Linux commands are coded to be corrupted. Oh, I'm not talking about distribution scripting, I'm talking about the kernel. Singular.
I could go on an on about why anyone who claims you can 'build' a kernel should be strung, but for example:
The dd command. shred. rsync. cp. They drown you with irrelevant information so that you fail to notice, they're omitting the important information. Like encryption. Disk geometry. Disk 'ownership'. Hidden sectors, chaotic clustering, corruption and nonsense and...
bah. What does anyone care, so long as they can take a picture of their dumb face smiling in front of something impossibly boring and send it to a friend's iPod for joy.

Can adobe patch files be deleted? What are they and why does it take up so much space?

If you are using Premiere Elements 9 Mac, then the next thing to do is to get details on what you mean by "patch files".
There are no "patch files" as you describe. There is a Premiere Elements 9.0.1 Update that needs to be used with the program. That you install and do not uninstall for best performance of the product.
What I am wondering is this. Do you mean by patch files and the description that you give Scratch Files?
If so, then you are looking at preview files and conformed audio and video files.
I am strictly an Elements Windows person so you will have to help me translate my Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 Windows instructions into meaningful ones for you as it relates to file location.
Under Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disk, where do you have Video Previews and Audio Previews directed. At that location, you should be able to delete these files. They are automatically generated when you render Timeline content. The consequence of deletion is that you will need to render again content in the project from which they came (if that project still exists). Go to the location shown and delete.
Then look to see where the Media Cache is directed. Those are conformed audio and video files (cfa and pek). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. Go to the location shown and delete.
Then look to Edit Menu/Preferences/Media and the Media Cache Database. That is targeting conformed video files (.mcdb file extension). They can be deleted and will be regenerated by the program if and when needed. You can click on the Clean button there to get rid of them instead of following the path to them as shown in the Media Cache Database area.
Do not delete any source media that went into projects after they were saved closed.
Please review the above and do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
If none of the above applies to your question, then please more details.
    Thanks.

I have a long list of gibberish files, in Preferences, in my Library. What are they? How did they get there? Can I delete them without causing a problem?

Here is one thing I found googling for WebEx:
    http://www.webex.com/why-webex/overview.html
(The x64 would most likely mean 64 bit). It may be a Windows based application/plugin, but since I had never heard of either, I'm only guessing there. If you do a search systemwide for it and don't find it plus don't know why it's there, I'd say throw it in the trash (don't empty it yet - make a note of the file path just in case you do have something installed that needs it so you can move it back).
Glad to hear it's not a torrent; some people use those not realizing that quite often there is a price to pay for downloading stuff for free that costs money elsewhere - the software packages quite often include little "add-ons" = malware which you really don't want.

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 - Evil Folders in Reporting Services - What Are They and How to Remove Them

    Hello All,
There are a lot of sub-folders in the http://CentralSiteSCCM/ReportServer. They are like:
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.0
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.1
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.10
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.100
    <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN.OLD.1000
Only <dir> Config_Mgr_CEN is properly populated with the correct set of the default folders.
Would you be so kind to advise on:
    What are they?
    How to remove them?
What to do in order for them not to appear any more?
Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi Mike,
I ran into an issue when I did the SP1 upgrade where a majority of our reports were duplicated. I created a script to delete these duplicate reports and I've adjusted it to work for your situation. You can find the original thread here, if you're interested:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/configmanagergeneral/thread/dc9aa3b4-cea9-4a07-87ca-2795a2dbc04e
You'll need to know your SCCM site code and the server name to run this script.
    # SCCM2012SP1-RemoveDuplicateSSRSFolders.ps1
    # This script will connect to SSRS on a specified server and delete all folders that end with .OLD.*
    # Used for SSRS cleanup after SCCM 2012 SP1 installation
    # Script must be run from an account that has access to modify the SSRS instance

  • Yosemite 10.10.2 server app. FTP help. I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac folder. It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?

So I have set up a localhost area in my Mac. I have the new server.app and I am running yosemite 10.10.2 .
I have a program running in my local server enviroment that wants to FTP to my mac .
It asks for the server , name, password, port and path. what are they?
I am pretty certain that the Serveris "localhost",
Name is my macs name (like my-mac-min)
    password is "my login password"
    and they suggest port 21.
But what is the file path, lets just say my site is set up http://localhost/siteftp and is actually at my Users/Sites/siteftp folder.
Why cant this program connect to the mac.
Is it because they are both operating in the same localhost enviroment,
could it be my folder permissions are not correct on siteftp folder?
    Help please !

I tried turning the computer off and then back on. The alerts don't show the notice to update as resolved. Hopefully this is not a problem or an indicator or another problem. Should I ignore or reload 10.10.1 from the app store to trigger a resolved check in a green circle?
Interesting that I had to buy server software after my free Yosemite download. I would have hoped that the two pieces of software would have gone together without any complication. It is not positive to end up buying a problem. Ah well, time to move on.

  • Service/Database Accounts - NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER & NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT - what are they for?

    Hi Guys,
I’ve done a fair amount of research for this question but just cannot seem to find the answer to my question in simple, non-DBA, terms.
    Server 2008 R2
    SQL 2008 R2
There are 2 users in the system database logins (NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER, NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT) … what are they for? It appears that they
are accounts to run the corresponding Windows services but yet they cannot be selected from the list of available built-in accounts, local accounts or domain accounts.
Also, I am using a couple of domain user accounts to run the services, do I need to add them to the database? I changed the service accounts from NETWORK
SERVICE to the domain user accounts using the SQL Configuration Manger which is supposed to take care of managing the user group membership and registry changes but the domain accounts are not in the database …. The services appear to be running fine.
    Thanks

    In basic terms:
    As you say, in the SQL Server Database Engine there are two logins;
NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. The Database Engine runs in Windows as a Windows service named
MSSQLSERVER. The NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER login is used by the service to connect to the Database Engine. Basically, this is how it connects to itself. The SQL Server Agent runs as a Windows service named
    NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT. The NT SERVICE\SQLSERVERAGENT
login is how the Windows process that is SQL Server Agent connects to the Database Engine to read the
msdb database to find out what it should do; and then do it. Both of these logins are members of the
sysadmin fixed server role, so they can do anything in the Database Engine. And they need to stay that way.
No, they can't be selected in the list of available built-in accounts, local accounts or domain accounts. This is because they are services, not accounts. They have a security identifier (SID) in Windows,
but Windows knows they aren't real users. Windows can authenticate them, but they don't have passwords that any human can use. If you run
lusrmgr.msc and look at the groups, you will see groups like
    SQLServerMSSQLUser$computername$MSSQLSERVER and NT SERVICE\MSSQLSERVER
is a member of the group.
As for the account that you used to run the services, this is complicated and has changed from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 and now again in SQL Server Code Named 'Denali'. The short answer is that
the account you specify will be used when a process tries to reach outside of the current Windows environment. But within the computer, there is a mix of authorization granted to the domain user, the service, and the Windows group
    SQLServerMSSQLUser$computername$MSSQLSERVER.
The good news is that SQL Server Configuration Manager figures out all the stuff you need when you change the accounts. If you are a glutton for punishment, you can get an idea for how complicated this
is by looking at the Denali documentation where I have tried to provide more specific information. (Note this is not the same as SQL Server 2008.) You can see it at:

It does not cover my question about in what order does the sync work?
Does the first signed on computer copy its information to the cloud?
Does the second computer/pad/cell then download the information from the cloud overwriting the information on the second device even if some of the information is different?
What happens to the information on the second device that is not in the cloud?
If you delete a record (eg a bookmark) from the second device how does it then delete it on the first device?
What are the keys to the different types of information?

Hi I have answered you questions inline below:
Does the first signed on computer copy its information to the cloud?
Yes when you first set up the account or when you first add a device to the cloud, if it is not the first time, it will merge with the other data
Does the second computer/pad/cell then download the information from the cloud overwriting the information on the second device even if some of the information is different?
By default it merges. There is no option to change this.
What happens to the information on the second device that is not in the cloud?
It will sync at the next sync interval if that data is selected to sync.
If you delete a record (eg a bookmark) from the second device how does it then delete it on the first device? What are the keys to the different types of information?
It resolved the entry the next time the first and second device syncs. Can you elaborate on the second part of this question?

My ipad mini has many emails which say they have no content and I cannot delete them.  The emails do not show up on my MacBook Air.  What are they and how do I get rid of them?

Close the mail app and reset the iPad. Closing apps instructions are for iOS 7. If you're not running iOS 7, I assume that you know how to close apps in iOS 5 or 6. If you don't know how to close apps, just reset the iPad.
To close an app, drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Latches what are they...

    Hi
what are the latches. I have read the documents and oracle documents describe that oracle latch are light weight locks. but when i investigate i found out the latches have latch addr and chain# what are they.
    thanks
    Nick

so latches are associated with processes. Am i
    right?
for example if one process want to share the data of
another process he will put a lock on the share data
area and no other process can access itNot the way I like to think about it.
For me, Latches are associated with memory data structures. A process may acquire a latch for a short period of time.
Analogy: wedding ... guest book ... 'wedding' pen linked to book by a chain.
    Data store = guest book
    Latch = pen
Guest 1 comes by ... pen is free, guest 'acquires' pen and signs book
Guest 2 comes by ... pen is in use, guest goes away to come back a bit later
Guest 3 comes by ... pen is now free, guest acquires pen (note guest 2 was off doing something else)
Guest 4 comes by ... pen is busy
Guest 2 comes by .... pen is free, guest acquires pen. ...
Is the pen associated with the guest, or with the book?

  • .itc files.  What are they?

Can someone tell me what the .itc files are that are stored in the Album Artwork Cache folder on the hard disk in the iTunes folder? I came across some while I was doing a search, thought they were something else and started to delete them. Now I have a bunch of them sitting in my trash and I'm not sure if I should permanently delete them or not. At the same time, I can't figure out which ones go in which folders if I were to try and put them back to their original location. If I delete them, will they be automatically generated again? Are they necessary for something? What are they?

They are definitely downloaded pic files. I say pic files, because instead of album artwork, they are actually small picture files of classical music composers pulled from various sites on the web.
I used "album artwork" in a loose sense inasmuch that you could put a photo of your dog into iTunes and call it album artwork.
Anyway, I guess my next question is what to do now?
Uh, I am disinclined to experiment with my iTunes, if you don't mind, so I'm not sure.
Does the artwork still show up in iTunes because I haven't emptied the trash yet?
I suspect those files need to be in specific locations in order to be seen.
Since you downloaded these yourself vs. fetched with iTunes it may be they are embedded in the files and not just present in the artwork folders. I download artwork and then paste it onto my mp3s which means the artwork is actually in the file in addition to whatever file itunes may make based upon the folder. I also notice that if I have a mp3 from the same album but have not embedded artwork in the mp3 it still displays art for that album. I think iTunes is displaying this art using the itc it generated from the album that does have artwork. So it may not matter that you have deleted the itc file if the artwork is embedded in the file or there is another album file with the artwork.
Is there a way to know where to replace them if I just pulled them out of the trash? That is what I can't figure out based on the names of the files. There doesn't seem to be any corresponding data in the file name as it would relate to the folder that it came from.
iTunes works in mysterious ways its wonders to perform. I suspect you might be able to replace the files if you were to go into the itunes library files and browse through the entries trying to associate all the code identities from the various listings. Not my idea of fun.

  • "recovered"files. what are they?

I have 25,000 photos in a library. Also there are thousands of photos in a folder called "Recovered Folder" of which they show as ALBUMS. I have checked many of them, and they seem to be duplicates of the photos in PROJECTS.  I have tried to find out what they are, and why they are present, but only find a relationship to Vaults, which I do not use.
a)what are they and where did they come from?
    b) can I get rid f them withut loosing any of my photos?
    Thank you
    Asuch

    a) A "recovered" folder is akind of "Lost & Found" place.  When you repair an Aperure library, upgrade it, or rebuild it, Aperture will place there any items found in the Aperture library, that are no longer tied to versions in your projects.
    b) That is hard to tell, without seeing your library. Frequently these items are just items that should have been trashed, but the Trash did not empty properly. Then you can trash them. But sometimes versions are losing there connection to the originals, but you may not notice it immediately, until you try to edit the version or to export it. And then you will need the recovered item. The safest cause of action would be to create a backup copy of your library as it is now.   Then look at your recovered items and try to identify the original in its project, If you are sure, that you have a working copy of the recovered item, delete it.

The first thing you should do is to back up your personal data. It is possible that your hard drive is failing. If you are using Time Machine, that part is already done.
Then, I think it would be easiest to reformat the drive and restore. If you ARE using Time Machine, you can start up from your Leopard installation disc. At the first Installer screen, go up to the menu bar, and from the Utilities menu, first select to run Disk Utility. Completely erase the internal drive using the Erase tab; make sure you have the internal DRIVE (not the volume) selected in the sidebar, and make sure you are NOT erasing your Time Machine drive by mistake. After erasing, quit Disk Utility, and select the command to restore from backup from the same Utilities menu. Using that Time Machine volume restore utility, you can restore it to a time and date immediately before you went on vacation, when things were working.
If you are not using Time Machine, you can erase and reinstall the OS (after you have backed up your personal data). After restarting from the new installation and installing all the updates using Software Update, you can restore your personal data from the backup you just made.
