Question about Northbridge of P965 Platinum (Holes or springs for new NB cooler)

If anybody know if the Northbridge on the P965 Platinum have holes or spring for the heatsink.
I want to install a new NB cooler. So i was wondering if the NB was mounted with screws or springs.
It would be nice if i did´nt had to take out the hole board again. That means if i could use the spring
My new cooler have both systems. Its just a matter of what i can use with the board.
Thx

Hi Maesus
Here is the 2 NB coolers i have.
Either the Extreme Spirit II from Thermaltake or the NorthQ NQ-3880
http://www.northq.com/products/gfx/nq3880.html
http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Cooler/VGAnCHIPnMEM/cl-c0034/cl-c0034.asp
They both have installing system for either Holes or Springs (Anchor clips). But it would be easyst with springs
because then i dont have to take out the MOBO to install the back plate.
But i cant see it right on the picture you gave if it have holes trough the MOBO or just springs
Thx buddy

  • Question about MSI K8N SLI Platinum

i have a question about this mobo.
my previous msi boards had a feature where if u overclocked too much, and the system couldnt handle it, it would load the default settings in the bios. I really liked this feature and am wondering if it will be present in this board.
    is it?

sorry m8 after that post i double checked and i thought you were talking about neo1 - didnt notice the SLI bit  .  i think a couple of others got caught by that one too.
    so i did some investigating:
it uses the same award phoenix bios 6.00PG as neo1 and 2.  every board i have owned since kt266a fom various manufacturers with that bios has had that feature. plus the insert key trick even works on a lot of 486 and early pentium 1 machines.  i am still 99% sure it will put it that way.

Even though on MSI's website the picture for the PFISR doesn't have a northbridge fan, mine does.  So, is there a reason why this thing is so bloody loud?  It sounds like a piece of plastic is just barely sticking up into the fans, creating a rattling sound.  If I turn my CPU fan speed down to a moderate speed, the NB fan is the loudest thing in my case, and I have five 80mm case fans and two PSU fans going full speed.
Does my motherboard have fan control for this fan?  Is it possible to turn the speed down some?  What if it I just remove the damned thing altogether?  I don't really see the point of having the fan there anyway, since both it and the heatsink are so small that they can't really be moving that much heat.  How hot does the northbridge usually get?  Is it possible to overclock the northbridge and see any performance gain?

    Thanks, that worked perfectly.
And I configured Speedfan to only run the NB fan at 75%, and it is now much quieter.

  • 2 questions about my P6N SLI Platinum

I'm not having any problems, but I do have 2 questions to ask that might prevent any future problems from occuring.
*scroll down for the questions if you don't want to read the filler*
    I recently rebuilt my PC:
    Processor:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115015
    Ram:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231065
and i'm using a 7600GS as my videocard (No SLI).
Now with that being said, while I was in the process of building this machine, I noticed that the JPW1 connector had 8 ports instead of the normal 4 that i'm used too. At first I was mad, because I'm not about to dish out another 100 bucks for a new PSU when the 500W i have now runs perfectly fine, BUT what threw me off was that 4 of the 8 pins were covered by a little plastic thing.
I took a chance and plugged in the normal 4-port thing in there and so far i've powered up my computer, formated my drive, installed Windows XP, fully updated it, and now i'm messing around with various other programs just to get my setup the way it was before.
    QUESTION 1:
Am I risking anything by having only the 4-port thing connected to the 8-port JPW1 thing on the motherboard? Or should I try getting an adaptor of sorts (and if so than where can I buy one?).
Now my next issue; My memory isn't on the list of memory that is approved for the motherboard, but I was buying on a budget and got it anyways on a recommendation. Again, i've done all kinds of stuff so far and I've yet to notice any problems (knock on wood).
    QUESTION 2:
If there is an incompatability issue with my memory and motherboard, how will I know? What are the symptoms? Or would the symptoms have shown up already during the installation and use of my OS and programs and I don't have much to worry about?
I am just trying to put my mind at ease and I would greatly appriciate any input.
Also, I think my memory is rated at 4-4-4-12 and  at 2.0v or something, but i'm not sure how to set that up in the bios, or should I just not bother with that if everything is running allright? I'm not much of an overlocker anyways, but I don't want my system to be underclocked either.

I know how to get to the memory options in the bios, but other than that, i'm not sure what to do exactly, and by that I mean i'm not sure which ones to change to which numbers, but I can possibly find a guide for it I suppose (though i'll consult the manual first obviously).
Thank you VERY much for letting me know why that thing was an 8 pin connector thingy instead of 4. I was tired and irritated when i was building the computer and I saw that and let a curse word bellow throughout the house (rather rough morning) thinking I had to go and buy some more stuff. I tried calling MSI, but their phone support is... and their online support is... But again, ty for your help. :D
Its not so much that the memory wasn't flat out compatable, but I built a PC a long long time ago and I bought some memory (kingston 1gig, 2x512, PC3200), and it would not stop rebooting. Turns out it accepts PC3200 memory and all of that, but for some reason it was really picky on which brand of pc3200 memory, so I had to wait a while until I got a new motherboard that was "less picky". I was just hoping that history won't repeat itself here, and so far I guess it isn't, though I'm going to try those memory timings you recommended.
    *edit*
After checking my bios, for some reason it won't let me change the voltage (stuck on auto), and when I go to the DRAM settings, there are way more than 5 things I can change.

  • Some questions about MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum nForce4 Ultra

    Hi to all!
First of all sorry for my bad english  :P
I have some questions regarding this motherboard that i would like to buy.
I've red some times ago that nForce 4 chipset had a bug with the HyperTransport (or similar) so all the motherboards with this chipset were post-poned. Now the german MSI site has posted a press-release of the MSI Neo4 saying that mass-volumes distribution will be in mid december.
I would like to know if some Neo4 were distribuited before nVidia found the bug and (if so) if there's a method to identify the "good" from the "bugged" versions.
The second question is about the possible heatsink. I would like to install a Zalman CNPS-7700 AlCu (with 12x12 silent fan) but I dunno if the heatsink "dimensions" could create problems to some motherboard component.
    Thanks!

  • Few questions about the K8 Neo2 Platinum

I am looking for a good nf3 socket 939 mobo. I have and x2 3800 and 2x1024 patriot 2-3-2-5 memory that I will be using. I looked at the dfi nf3 ultra but there are way too many issues with that board. I have been satisfied with other msi products in the past. I have heard some good things about the neo2 and I was wondering if the system ran pretty stable using 1T when overclocking? Also what dividers are available for the memory? Also does the pci lock work with the sata drives? I know that there is a bios update for it to correctly work with the x2 cpu but will the shipping bios boot with an x2 installed so that I can flash it?

I have tried 3800+X2 and it works with the latest bios ver.1.9 for this board and I believe your memory should work at 1T but you might want to adjust Tras to 6 instead of 5 for stability.  You should be able to boot with the shipping bios but system won't recognize two processors until you upgrade the bios to ver. 1.9.  If you are overclocking once system is stable and running properly in WIN XP Pro - use bios settings instead of MSI's corecenter utility program to do so.  Flash to new bios carefully following instructions in other threads and stickies.

  • Questions about using iMovie HD (6.0.4) with a new, as yet undecided, camcorder

    Hi,
I want to keep on using iMovie HD (6.0.4) with whatever new camcorder I am getting. iMovie HD accepts mpeg-4 video so any camcorder that uses that format should work, shouldn't it? I will (probably) be bringing the video in via USB, as I don't think any new camcorders have Firewire ports anymore but I'd love to know about any that do. The plan is to find the files on the camcorder and drag and drop or otherwise transfer them into my MacBook Pro. (See my last question for the Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter problem.)
I've read that some?/all? Canon camcorders can record in both AVCHD and mpeg-4 so I'm looking into them. Any other brands I should check out? Using AVCHD looks like it will be too much trouble so I'm ruling those out, unless you have better ideas.
I've heard that Sony uses their own proprietary "wrapper" for mpeg-4 files their camcorders create. I think there is software out there, possibly for free, that will simply "re-wrap" them, not re-ecode them, so that they may be more easily used. Will Sony camcorders be a problem?
Will file sizes be a problem? I've read so much on AVCHD and other formats that maybe this doesn't apply but I've read that one hour of video can be 60 gb? I don't remember what context that was in.
Can I use mpeg-2 files? From what I have read, I don't think I can. If converting them would make them work, would it take a long time to do that and would file sizes be huge?
I have been using a 21 year old Sony DCR-TRV 9 mini DV cam. This past weekend the LCD screen died. I can still use the viewfinder but that's going to be challenging, so I am shopping for an inexpensive new camcorder. Less than $500, somewhere in the $100-$300 range is preferred but no toys.... HD seems to be out of reach with most starting around $500 but if you recommend any under $500, I'd love to know about them. SD should be fine otherwise. I prefer some sort of card for storage storage rather than a DVD or hard drive. The more popular format, the better.
Any advice is welcome. I do want to stay with iMovie HD though. I have tried iMovie 11 and don't like it. HD suits me fine.
One last question: Since my MacBook Pro doesn't have a Firewire port, I have found it simpler to use my old Powerbook that does.  I then transfer the files over to the MacBook Pro to edit them. I have tried using a Thunderbolt/Firewire adapter so I could use the MBP but it didn't work well with video. The question is: is there a better way to transfer the video files onto the MBP from whatever new camcorder I get than USB? Are there good Thunderbolt connectors that will work well with camcorders?
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,
    John L

I heartily support your decision to continue to use iMovie 6! I use nothing else!
imovie 6 was originally designed to import DV video streams from tape via firewire. However, in practise it can do much more. Useful sources of information:
    iMovie 6 Help:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMovie_HD_6_Getting_Started.pdf
    from which this is excerpt:
iMovie HD can transfer, or import,
video in many video formats and from many different
types of camcorders, including DV camcorders (including those that support
widescreen) and high definition (HDV) camcorders. In most cases, iMovie HD can
automatically recognize and import the video you’re using, so you don’t have to pay
    attention to video formats.
In this step, you will import your own video into your iMovie project. If you have a
camcorder with a FireWire connection, follow the instructions to connect your
camcorder and import the video using the capture controls in iMovie HD. If you have
another type of digital video device or have footage in a file on your computer, see the
    instructions on page 13.
To import video from a camcorder:
    1
Set the camcorder to VTR mode (some camcorders call this Play or VCR) and turn it on,
    if necessary.
    2
Connect your camcorder to your computer using a FireWire cable.
This MaciLife PDF is also good:
    http://www.macilife.com/PDF/iMovie_HD_6_Chapter.pdf
There is also a video tutorial here (with links to others):
    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=654013474999069361#
The excerpt I quoted from the Apple link is less informative than it could be. It also succesfully imports video from my Fuji FinePix S4500 (actually a digital still camera) via USB2, as well from my Sony video camera via firewire!
Can I use mpeg-2 files? From what I have read, I don't think I can. If converting them would make them work, would it take a long time to do that and would file sizes be huge?
No. mpeg2 is the final compressed standard format of a DVD (and will be created by iDVD). To use that in iMovie 6 requires you 'reverse engineer' the file back to a DV stream, with commensurate loss of quality. If you really want to do that, post back for instructions.
I have no experience with Thunderbolt so can't help you there, but hopefully Karsten will see this thread and chime in with his usual excellent advice!

  • Question about how Mac OS X stores file information for iMovie and iPhoto

I'm relatively new to Macs (am using a 3yr old iMac and a new MBA running 10.6.4 and iLife 11) and I have this general question.
I'm using the iMac for a lot of Movie projects and photos. I've very quickly filled up my 500Gb hard drive and I don't understand why other than this:
I import a movie using iMovie and it's stored in an Events folder. I then make a project and it's stored in an Projects folder, I then share it to iTunes and it's stored in the iTunes Music/Movies folder. And I also see the movie in an iMovie Shared folder. In other words, it appears that a 2Gb movie (as an axample) becomes about 10Gb because it's saved in multiple places. Must I keep all of them?!
With iPhotos, I've imported about 6Gb of photos from my Windows PC. No problem. I copied across all the directories and then imported them into iPhoto. I then thought I could delete all the directories as the iPhoto folder became 24Gb in size! Not sure how but it seems that as well as keeping my original 6Gb of photo directories it's also put them into the iPhoto directory and somehow made it a big folder size?! If I delete the original folders (since they're now in the iPhoto app folder) then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
I've got about 80Gb of music, about 6Gb of photos and about 80Gb of movies. Somehow it's pretty much filled up 500Gb of hard drive (and very little other programs or files other than the normal iMac stuff it comes with) because of the way the Mac (iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto) seems to have the same thing copied everywhere.
All input greatfully receive and apologies if I'm being thick.
    Richard.

    Richard
I'll answer the iPhoto part for you.
If you use iPhoto in its default setting then the images are copied into the Library on import. Yes you can now delete the directories you have copied over.
then I can't actually browse the JPGs files can I except from within iPhoto only?
    Yes and no...
The point of iPhoto is that it's your Photo Manager. It's the "go-to" app when you want to do anything with your Photos. - View them, edit them, email them, print them, use them in other apps, upload them whatever - all of these things are done from iPhoto.
There are two advantages to working this way.
    1. You get to work with your Photos and don't have to think about files. This means the organisation possibilities are much greater than just files in folders. You can use Keywording, Smart Searching, Albums, Events and a plethora of other bases for categorising and therefore find your pics.
    2. iPhoto is integrated throughout the entire OS. That means your Library is available throughout the OS without iPhoto being open by means of Media Browsers. You can search your Library from a MEdia Browser and so on.
So, while, yes, the files are not browsable via the Finder, there's no need to. Everything you need to do can be done with iPhoto.
Want to edit the pics in something other than iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
    TD

  • Question about transferring all my songs from current IPOD to New IPOD....

I currently have a 15GB IPOD, that I've had for about 2+ years.....has the 4 control buttons on top of the spin wheel. Anyway, I currently have over 2500+ songs, many from my CD collection.
I'm interested in purchasing a new 60GB IPOD, so I can enjoy the new video feature. Is there any way to transfer all my songs from one IPOD to another? I don't want to do anything illegal, but both IPOD's would belong to me. I don't think I could go through copying all the CD's over again. I don't think they'll be a problem transferring my other songs (not from CD).
    Has anyone done this?
Any helps/hints would be greatly appreciated.

As long as your songs are in iTunes on your PC, then you can transfer them to as many iPods as you own.

  • Question about creating a watermark in Photoshop Windows, but for use in iMovie 11 16:9 aspect ratio

I am looking to get this logo (the whole thing, not cut off  on the top and bottom as is all I can currently manage to get working) to use as a semi-transparent watermark for a video I made to highlight the company the logo represents. Anyone have any ideas or might be able to edit it and send it back? No matter what I do the top and bottom are always cut off in iMovie 11. A link to the logo I need to use is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AGC_Logo.png
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] with any suggestions.
From all the research I did last night I found that iMovie 11 requires the watermarks themselves to be in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect. I tried using GIMP on my wifes macbook to crop to these aspects but some part of the logo is always cut off, ie: the top and bottom or the left and right sides.
    Thank you again in advance!

Thank you. I'll try it as soon as I get home from work. Unfortunately we
have a filter that blocks direct image links. However I forwarded this to
    my personal email.
I tried stretching the canvas last night but no matter the size of the
canvas, GIMP still would only allow me to crop based off the size of the
logo itself. I could crop part of the canvas, as well as the logo, but I
could not crop a perfect square. When I did crop the square...(after two
hours of trying) iMovie 11 still viewed the logo as too large and cut off
the top and bottom of the circle.
Hopefully when I get home what you sent will work.

  • Question about product variable - is BC the right choice for me?

I have a criteria that must be met for my ecommerce solution for a new business. The customer has a product that has a variable length, and would like the price to reflect the options that are offered. For example: the produced panels are 30" wide, but the customer can choose the length of each panel. Another option may be sq. ft. for material...
How can I achieve this with Business Catalyst? Is there an easy way?
    Thank you for your time!!!
    Matt

    Look into Product Attributes.
You can preset various sizes and change the price based on the size. See this KB Article.
I would recommend creating a trial site, use a template, then try Product Attributes and see if it does all of what you need.
If you believe it would work then you can go from there.

  • Question About what Azure Services I should be using for mobile app with website.

    Hello,
I am wondering what Azure service would be best for my new application. I need to have an SQL database that I can connect to and modify from both a website and a mobile app preferably WP8 and Android. I was not really understanding whether I would need a
mobile service or normal SQL database. Which should I use or am I completely off track?
    Thanks,
    Matthias

Mobile Services uses SQL Database, nothing special on that SQL Database, its just like any other  "normal" SQL Database.
Mobile Services provides "back-end services" that simplifies accessing SQL Database, Notification services, authentication, etc...
Let's assume you don't use Mobile Services, to use SQL Database, you would need your app (both mobile and web) to connect to the database. In practice, you will not want to expose your SQL database directly, so you'd end-up writing some kind of a "facade"
that your app will access instead of directly connecting to the database.
Instead of writing that "facade", Mobile services provides that for you (you still have to write code though, but less than what you need to write if you're rolling your own).
Both your web app and mobile apps can share the same SQL database (pay attention to the mobile service schema).
To help you decide, ask yourself what other features will your mobile app require? Authentication? Notification? etc... are you prepared to write those on your own or use various libraries instead of one?

  • Question about classes15.jar vs ttjdbc5.jar and support for Java 1.6

The docs note the use of ttjdbc5.jar vs ttjdbc14.jar depending on Java version. In the tt70_32 distribution (lib dir) I also see jars named classes14.jar, classes15.jar, and classes16.jar. They look to have the same content as ttjdbc5.jar. Can someone clarify when to use these jars?
Also, are there any known issues on Java 6?
    Thanks

The classes+nn+.jar files are just the old names we used to use and we still ship the files under these names for backwards compatiility. The new names are ttjdbc14.jar (JDK 1.4), ttjdbc5.jar (JDK 1.5 or Java 5) and ttjdbc6.jar (JDK 1.6 or Java 6). However, due to a packaging error in some of the earlier 7.0 release we omitted to ship ttjdbc6.jar. But you can just copy/rename classes16.jar to ttjdbc6.jar.
I'd recommend using the ttjdbc files as this is the 'new' naming convention. I am not aware of any issues with Java 6. I have used it extensivley with TimesTen and not seen any problems.. It is faster than Java 5 in many instances.

  • Stupid, but essential question : Waiting until Spring for new MB

I know, I know....this is yet another one of those stupid questions....but I can't stop thinking about it...
After two delayed shipment dates, I am kinda sick of Apple as of right now....I'm hearing that they're possibly coming out with a new MB this coming spring. The new MB supposedly comes with the core 2 duo processor, and a new logic board to fully take advantage of the new processor. I do have a vaio laptop right now..so I guess I don't mind waiting.....except the grueling pain of wanting to have an apple for the next....6 months.....
What would YOU do?.....(should I just wait for my MB to come or should I cancel the order and wait 'til next spring?....)
(again, I know this is a stupid question, so don't mention it....I just wanted to get the general public perspective.)

    yellowman-
i was in the same position as you and i totally understand how you feel.
in my case, i could not wait (eventhough i desperately wanted to) because my school starts in a less than a week so i needed a notebook. i received my macbook about a week ago without major problems. all seems to be working fine. however, after owning it, there is really nothing special about the macbook. sure, it's more attractive than other notebooks, but it gives you nothing more and nothing less(except the operating system) than what dell or sony has to offer.
and besides, include me in the less-impressed customer category of the macbook series. even with little things that happen with my macbook (ie overheating), i get paranoid for no apparent reason. simply put, the macbook is a torturing machine. no righful owner should feel this way.
with the macbook series, apple has progressed in terms of the style and versitility that they can bring out to the market. however, they have taken a step backwards in terms of reliability. you should wait for the second generation macbooks where they will be more familiar with its design flaws and hopefully will make it better.
so in conclusion, i'll give you a little SAT format summary:
apple is to steve jobs; as macbook is to paris hilton.
    if that makes sense
