Question about output through the DVI port

The problem: I am using a DVI to HDMI cable to send video to an AV receiver. The AV receiver strictly only accepts a DVI-D (Digital) signal. Upon turning it all on, the MacBook Pro screen reloads and appears to be sending video out, based on the AV receiver's model name appearing in the Display's menu bar. The receiver however reads "No Signal". Most likely this is because the MBP's dual-signal port is giving it problems (it can send both analog and digital).
Is it possible to elect to send a digital-only signal? The cable itself does not include the extra pins for analog, so I'm not sure why it would think it is.
Keep in mind I'm not entirely sure this is the problem, I just have confidence in this theory.

Edward

  • Macbook Pro 4,1 (early 2008) is the DVI port analog or digital?

I have been tasked with a slide show presentation on a family member's HD TV using my MacBook Pro 4,1. The TV is a slightly older big screen TV without HDMI inputs. I would lke to use the component (YPbPr) inputs on the TV rather than VGA. VGA degrades the image appearance too much.
I purchased a "ViewHD" HDMI input (Digital) to YPbPr (analog component) Output Switch Converter with the thought of using my 2nd Gen Apple TV (ATV) to connect the ATV via HDMI into the Converter and output the component YPbPr to the TV set. I am looking for a simple, elegant solution as I know this question will rear it's ugly head again.
First, I could find no resources that discusses the output of the DVI port on the MBP. Is it DVI-D, DVI-A, or DVI-I?
Is there an adaptor out there that I can use to change the DVI out on the MBP (if it is digital) to HDMI so I don't have to use the Apple TV?
Any help or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    TIA

The DVI connector on a MacBook Pro supports both Analog and Digital output.

  • I have a record player hooked up through the audio port.  The input volume is registering high, but there is no output anywhere.  Help?

I have a record player hooked up to a preamp which is hooked up through the audio port. The sound settings are set to have the audio port be "input".  The input volume is registering high with fluxuations in the sound settings, but there is no output anywhere.  Do I need some sort of third party application or widget to hear the record i'm playing through the speakers that are hooked up to my computer?

    keithstopher,
You may want to check into a USB interface, as I believe you have a Mac with the single audio port, which can be used as input OR output.
You may want to check into something like the following, there are may out there, see what fits your needs best.

  • I want to build an array using the data that I get through the serial port

I am reading data through the serial port, but I want to buffer these data. I have seen a function, but i think that i can use this if I am reading data from I/O intrument, so I don´t how can I fill an array, with the data that I am reading!!!
    Thank you!!!

I'll hazard a guess that you are reading data with VISA as a string. Then you want to convert that (probably with Scan From String) into a number. Then, you want to collect those numbers into an array.
We don't really have enough information to tell you the best way to do this. Here are some ideas.
If you are reading all the numbers from the instrument at once (e.g., a waveform from a scope), you might consider using "Spreadsheet string to array". Most scopes return the data as ASCII with commas between the values, so you'd wire a "," to the "delimiter" input of the "Spreadsheet string to array" function.
If, however, the instrument is returning a single point at a time, there are more questions. Do you want to do this continuously, or do you want t
o collect only a certain number of data points, and then process them as a block?
If the latter, then you'd just acquire each data point, convert it to a number, and then use output indexing on the for loop to create your array.
If the former, then you may want to store the data in a queue, and read it from the queue elsewhere in your program.
If you let us know what you want to do, we can probably provide more precise help.

  • ATI X800XT is adc port same dvi signal as the dvi port

For starters, what does "adc" stand for? Does it mean the adc is an analog port needing conversion to digital for display to an apple cinema display? someone at apple just said it stands for apple display connection. Yes, I know I still need an adapter, but I'm wondering if this port is inferior the the dvi port on the card. I don't know if the adaptor is just changing the physical hardware connections, or something else.
I want to go from the adc port thru an adc/dvi adaptor to the matrox mxo box, out of the mxo to apple hd 23" display. I need to reserve the other graphics port (dvi) to go thru a dvi/vga adaptor to my vga monitor.
Is the adc port on the card the same as the dvi port in terms of the type and quality of signal? What is the adc port anyway?

The video quality should not be compromised by using any of these adapters. The ADC outputs the same exact digital signal as the DVI outputs. The ADC-to-DVI adapter basically discards the USB and power features and passes the digital AND analog signals through.
As mentioned above, both ADC and DVI also carry analog video signals. Using a DVI-to-VGA adapter, an ADC-to-VGA adapter, or a combination of both will allow you to use an analog VGA monitor from either port on your video card, again with no degradation of the signal.
If you are missing any or all colors or the signal is degraded in some way, you must have a bad connection, bad adapter, or bad cable. Try reconnecting or replacing each part one at at time to determine the culprit.
As for the problem of non-matching DVI connectors, check the link below to determine which ones you have and which ones you need. There are pictures of each connector on this page:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigitalVisualInterface
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleDisplayConnector
You should be able to find an adapter (or gender changer) that matches up to your cable. A web search should give you plenty of sources and options. You may try a place like Cyberguys.com: http://www.cyberguys.com/ (Search for "DVI gender" to see all available adapters.)
With quality cables and adapters, you should be able to achieve what you are trying to do with no signal degradation to each of your monitors. Let me know how it goes.

  • Using a PS/2 keyboard on a Sparc workstation through the serial port

We have recently migrated an application that used to run on a PC, to now run on a Sparc Workstation. This is a SunBlade 1500, running Solaris 8. The application is running in a dedicated console which has a fitted keyboard and trackerball that have PS/2 connectors and cannot be changed.
We need a way of connecting the PS/2 keyboards to the serial ports of the Sparc workstation. We already have a piece of software that will read ascii values from the serial port so we definately want to go through the serial ports.
Can someone please suggest what converters will be required to get the output of the keyboard and trackerball as ascii input to the serial port.

Actually, that's not a bit perverse, at all.
Jonathan's suggestion is a standard method of connecting to a server.
(null cable between the computer serial ports)
... see the Solaris man pages.
    man tip
TeraTerm and Hyperterminal are customarily used on a PC running some dialect of Windows.
The 'tip' command is all that's necessary between Solaris systems.
PS/2 is not a serial connection, but is a keyboard/mouse interface 'invented' by IBM when they offered their XT-class PS/2 line of desktop systems, back in the 1980's.
I found this next link by using Google:
    http://members.chello.at/theodor.lauppert/computer/ps2/
The smaller DIN ports were more compact than the AT-class keyboard ports and the mouse moved from a serial port to a dedicated mouse port.
Serial communication devices are not keyboards, per se,
and keyboards are not serial communication devices.
You need other hardware in between to translate what the human being sends, and another computer is a common method to accomplish that translation.
    Having said all that ...
Since you cannot change the dedicated console hardware,
I suggest you go to the manufacturer of that console equipment
and have them suggest some sort of serial-to-serial interface lash-up.

  • Is there a way to connect an external speaker (for another room) through the headphone port

Is there a way to connect an external speaker (for another room) through the headphone port  & still hear sound through the internal speakers?  System Preferences/Sound/Output or Sound Effects allows you to use one or the other  --  headphones or internal speakers.  I would like to have the option of hearing music through the internal speakers in one room, & through an external speaker in another room at the same time.  I also do not want to frequently disconnect/reconnect the external speaker from/to the headphone port as I know over time the connection could become loose.  (10.7.4  Lion)

dont think so but I could be wrong
as it were I didn't like the build in audio so I connected some external logictech 2.1 speakers  but there
are times when I use headset so I bought this one
or any minijack splitter will work too so I have 2 things connected to the headset port works just fine

  • I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use?

I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use? My 2006 iMAC is showing it's age but I figure I can use it as just a monitor just fine. Assuming I can connect the two together.

That older iMac isn't designed to receive video input through the mini-DVI connection. Only certain newer iMacs are able to be used as displays.
Your only options are to use something like ScreenRecycler mentioned above.

  • Configuring The DVI Port?

Does the DVI port require some sort of setup and/or configuring when plugging in a monitor.
Our IT department is adding Dell 19" flat panel monitors to our PowerMacs.
They plugged the monitor into the DVI port and nothing happened.
What else could be the problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
    Welcome to the Discussions!
One of the things we ask new members to do is fill out the computer portion of the My Settings --> over there on the right. Then we can see what kind of Mac you have and give you better advice, thanks.
DVI ports don't need configuring. The key on DVI-I connectors forms a plus sign, while on DVI-D connectors it forms a minus sign. Look here to identify your type of DVI:
    http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/specsformats/audiovideoconnections.php
Note: Many Mac G4's came with ADC/VGA video ports, these require a ADC>DVI Adapter.
In addition, it just may be that the video card in your Mac cannot provide the proper resolutions for the Dell monitor. We'll need to know more info about your Mac to determine that.

  • I am trying to export a movie through imovie using the share function, but each time imovie seizes up and stops working about halfway through the rendering process and I can't proceed and have to turn off the computer. Can this be fixed?

I am using iMovie and can't seem to complete a render of a completed project through the sharing/media browser. Trying to create a medium size movie that I can then access in iDVD to burn a DVD.
But each time I try, iMovie quits on me about halfway through the rendering process.
I have successfully used media browser to create other movies, but now it doesn't work.
Anybody know of any fixes or troubleshooting?
    Thanks.

When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

  • Is it possible for a mini DVI port on the graphics card to stop working while the DVI port works fine?

I have a 27 inch cinema LED display that will not work when I plug into a Mac Pro (10.6.8) mini dvi port. But it will work fine on another Mac Pro with the same system and other Mac Pros with Lion and Mountain Lion. I can get a 20 inch LCD monitor to work in the DVI port on the mentioned problem Mac.
I've ran all software updates and troubleshooting utilities.

Real, Welcome to the discussion area!
Sorry to douse your enthusiasm but that is NOT a mini-DVI connector. It is a mini-VGA connector.

  • I want to transfer data through the serial port in the same coding that hyperterminal uses. How can i do it?

The serial port seems to be working, and labview seems to be sending the data, but the problem is in which format does it send the data, because in hyperterminal i just input the string "JDX" and it sends it to my device, with labview it sends something but my device does not recognize it.

Hyperterminal adds the carriage return/line feed to the string which is
generated by the return key to send out the current line. LabVIEW simply
sends out what you tell it, so try to set the string to "Show \ Display"
format and add a \r or \n or \r\n to the command you want to send out.
Assumes of course that you set the right baudr
    ate/bits/parity etc in
LabVIEW with the VISA property node, when opening the serial port.

  • Question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1

I have a quick question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1. In one of the manuals, it states that if you're using Dell Optiplex GX series for our hardware configuration, is it true we need to re-write the MITE functions to correlate with the hardware? Please if you can clarify what this means, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.
