Question about Parallels using Bootcamp partition

I was about to install XP on bootcamp but i would mainly be using parallels to run XP from the bootcamp partition. What i was wondering is that if i was to make any changes to xp like install a software and create a new folder through parallels, would it reflect on the actual bootcamp partition when i load into the actual XP partition using bootcamp? Basically, do the changes made to windows using parallels carry over to the bootcamp partition given you are using the bootcamp partition on parallels?
Thanks

Thanks a lot. While i am at it, if i use the bootcamp partition with Parallels, i cannot suspend the VM right?
Parallels will behave the same, whether it has its own copy of Windows, or is using that on the Boot Camp partition.
The only difference is backup. If you use Parallels with Windows in a disk image file (Preferably a sparse bundle), Windows can be backed up with Time Machine. If Windows is on its own partition, Time Machine can't handle it.

  • Parallels unmounted BOOTCAMP partition, I cant remount, cant use BC or Para

This is a crosspost from the parallels support forums. Nobody has responded there and I have tried a few more things and all have failed, desperation is rising.
I hope someone here has some kind of idea what might be going on because I have some very valuable data on my boot camp partition and I did not expect a trial of Parallels to destroy it...
I tried installing the Parallels trial version of Desktop 6. For some reason it would not ID my boot camp partition and said that I had to mount it using the disk utility. I thought this was strange but didn't think much more of it. I continued to use my computer for other purposes for about an hour and decided I wanted to head back to my BOOTCAMP side, so I restarted into Windows and recieved "Disk read error, press ctrl +alt +del" from the DOS prompt. Restarted a few times and continued to get the same error.
I returned to OSX and discovered that my BOOTCAMP partition no longer appears on my desktop, or as an option for Startup Disk. If I start Disk Utility, I see my OSX partition, and then I see my BOOTCAMP partition, but now it is unmounted (greyed out) and reads "disk0s3". Attempts to mount it have been unsuccessful. If I try the same from the terminal I receive "Volume on disk0s3 failed to mount".
I attempted to use Parallels to read the drive to at least recover my important documents but when I pointed it to the (what used to be) boot camp partition, the virtual machine reported "no OS installed on this drive".
In some research in the issue, I read something about MacFUSE or NTFS-3G locking down the mount abilities of the drive. Someone is having a similar issue as me here, for example. Finder does see a folder with one file called "ntfs-3g" in /opt/local/var/ in a FUSE folder, but other than that I see no indication of ntfs-3g being installed. Not only that but I attempted both uninstalling and installing MacFUSE from System Preferences. In both cases I could still not mount the drive or boot to my boot camp partition.
Please help! I'm really at my wit's end here and I am horrified at the thought of losing all of my data.
No idea if this helps but here is diskutil info on the partition
Some further research indicates there may be an issue with MBR? This is getting far out of the realm of my expertise so I would have no idea where to start investigating.

I have also tried booting from ubuntu live CD (which did not work and resulted in a very scary loud sysbeeping and flashing of the front LED). Then I tried booting from win7 CD. That may still be a viable option but I need to find a USB keyboard because the stock mackbook pro keyboard seems to not send input when i am prompted for "press any key to boot from CD/DVD".
I also tried uninstalling parallels and installing VMWare Fusion. Fusion also does not detect the BOOTCAMP partition. It doesn't see it at all. Assuming this is because it is still unmounted.
I do not care if I lose my install, I will probably want to do clean installs of both leopard and win7 after this is all over. But I really do need to recover my data. If anyone knows of a utility that can browse unmounted NTFS volumes locally from OSX, I will buy you a thousand peachy penguins.

Still no definitive solution but a few updates.
I was able to boot off the win7 DVD. Apparently I was not slamming the keys fast enough the first few times. I selected the option to repair an installation of windows, but it couldn't identify any NTFS partitions. At that point I decided any hope of booting from this partition was lost, and I may as well just focus on data recovery. I found a tool called FileSalvage which sweeps partitions, mounted or unmounted, and looks for the signature of known file types. It can then restore those files. I believe I should be able to restore most of the files I need with this type of tool, but unfortunately it costs $80. I am still looking for any similar DIY or freeware solutions.

  • Question about Parallels and ATI Radeon 5770

Ok, so I have a Mac Pro 3,1 here. I'm upgrading it to 16GB and two 7200 RPM 3TB drives which I'll run in Raid 0.
It has an ATI 2600HD with 256MB VRAM.  This card has two DVI ports.
I just purchased an ATI Radeon 5770.  I will use it with two Cinema Displays (DVI connections).
To connect the second display, I have the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter at Firmware 1.03.
    My question concerns Parallels 8.
My Windows 7 VM will be a heavy-use VM so I want snappy performance.  I was planning to dedicate 8GB RAM, half my CPU cores to it, and 512MB VRAM on the 5770.
What I was wondering about was the possibility of leaving in the 2600 HD and using its GPU to support my Parallels VM.  Is that feasible?  Practical?
    Thanks

Dump the 2600XT (put it on the shelf, don't use it)
Install Windows natively first, then you can use it both ways, natively and dual boot, plus in a VM when that works.
Another option is 10.8.2 supports more Nvidia cards and more then the 1GB.
Don't use green 3TB in an array.

  • Question about Parallels

I already have windows vista installed on my mac via bootcamp, but i would like to install parallels so i dont have to keep restarting. Is it possible to install parallels with my bootcamp partition, or do i need to reinstall windows?

    Hi Adam,
Parallels can use a BootCamp Windows partition for creating a Parallels Virtual Machine.
Check the online documentation avaiable at their website for how-to.

  • Question about Automator using Spaces.

I don't think this is the right place for this question, but I figured I am probably going to need to write an applescript to do what I want, so I decided to put it here.
I have an automation to open some Word documents on my idisk, then open Dictionary, then open Safari with some tabs. But the problem comes in with spaces. I have Word and Dictionary open on Space 1 and Safari open in Space 3. When the automation ends, I end on Space 3 and would like to know how I add a function to set the focus back to Space 1. It's not all that detrimental to the success of my Automation, but I only use Safari for research and would like to focus to end back on word. I have tried switching which apps open first, but I still end up on the 3rd Space.
My other question is, where can I go for reference to commands in Xcode and AppleScript that deal with Spaces? I love using that function and I have had some ideas about scripts that could help me with them, but I don't even know were I would start with commands.

There are several solutions to this.
The first option would be to send the appropriate key command to switch to space 1. If you've left your preferences as the defaults then you can:
    <pre class=command>tell application "System Events" to keystroke "1" using {control down}</pre>
Which will send a Ctrl-1 and switch to space 1.
An alternative, which may be even better, is to activate the application you want to be frontmost:
    <pre class=command>tell application "Microsoft Word" to activate</pre>
This should activate the application and switch to that application's space.

  • Confused about Parallels vs. Partitioning to Run Windows on New iMac

I need to buy a new iMac for work, where currently its a PC environment.  The only thing I really need to continue to run is Quickbooks, which I must use the PC version as we run payroll in house and want to remain compatible with all our global accountants.
While I've used Macs exclusively at home, I've never messed with partitioning.  I was under the impression that I would create a partition and install Windows 7 and a copy of our Quickbooks and then would have to sign in and out between partitions to run Quickbooks...effectively signing in and out of 2 different computer systems (as if I had 2 different computers).
I am confused as to whether I need Parallels (which I have also never worked with).  Is this needed to work in the 2nd PC partition?  or is Parallels something that I can run on my new Mac in the Mac environment and run Windows 7 & Quickbooks without having to log in and out and/or keep rebooting to go back and forth?
    Any insight is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Parallels is a program like any other. You create virtual hard drives on your current hard drive that it uses to store the Windows installation. It is just like creating a disk image on your hard drive. To the computer, it looks and acts like a hard drive, but it is cut out of space on your hard drive. To your Mac, it is just a single file.
Search the internet for "virtualization." Or, look on the Parallels/VM Ware websites for how it all works.
Because the OS sees the Virtual Disk as a single file, if you go into Windows and add a transaction, that whole file changed, not just the single transaction.
Time Machine* "listens" for changes in files. When it detects that a file changed, it backs up the entire file. It doesn't go in and back up the part of the file that changed.
If you could break that virtual disk image into tiny slices, then Time Machine would only see one of the tiny slices change instead of the entire virtual disk. Apple uses that concept in what it calls a Sparse Bundle Disk Image. Database systems use the same method. The "slices" are called stripes. So, to be Time Machine-aware, the developers would have to store large amounts of data in a sparse bundle disk image so that Time Machine only sees when one of the stripes changes and just backs up that stripe.
I don't know whether Parallels or VMWare use Sparse Bundles for their virtual disks. If they do, then you could back them up efficiently with Time Machine. If they don't, it would be better to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to just back up the Virtual Disk Image periodically (it can be scheduled).
It is a combination of both. To make Time Machine fast, it doesn't look inside each file to determine what has changed. It just looks to see if the file changed, and then it backs up the whole file. Because of that, software engineers need to take advantage of Sparse Bundles if they intend to store large amounts of data the user might want to back up. I don't know what the tradeoffs are in using a Sparse Bundle vs writing straight to disk.
*It is actually a process called fsevents (file system events) that watches and logs every change to the file system. Time Machine uses that database to determine what needs to be backed up.
P.S. You seem fixated on Parallels. There are two other options, VMWare and VirtualBox. For what you need to use Windows for, I would use VirtualBox. It is free and will work just fine. They have done a very good job keeping up with OS X updates and upgrades.
For any of them, you will need a copy of Windows to install on the Virtual Machine.

  • Questions about Military use

Hey all, my wife is going on her second deployment to Kosovo and this time we were told they have WIFI in their rooms! Awesome! So through the wonders of ebay I bought us both iSight cams for our macs. They work great with iChat.
I was wondering if there are any issues we should look for? Or maybe a different messenger service we should have as a back up?
Anyone have any experience with this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
Like CodLBi has said it is going to be about Firewalls or at least which ports the LAN has open and the Connection speed and the Bandwidth share that are going to effect this the most. (Not to mention any "Security" concerns about apps that can send files and Pics)
If it is the Miltary that control the LAN and Internet link then they might move on the ports (they have in the Gulf).
As to Bandwidth that will depend on how many other people are using the LAN At them same time and what they are doing on-line.
I presume it is not the Mac Pro she is taking
That could run Windows XP with Boot Camp or Paralleles and would be one way round as AIM on a PC moves it's ports around and that may have provided a solution.

  • Questions about recovery discs and partitioning Satellite A200-QH0

I bought a Satellite A200-QH0 model in Australia and due to lack of forums in our country I'd like to ask some questions here if that's ok.
The notebook contains 3 partitions - a 1.6GB "EISA Configuration" partition, the large OS partition, and the recovery partition. So I've made the recovery DVD??s using the Recovery Disc Creator tool as we aren't supplied with an actual disc. But I would like to know what these discs will do? My questions:
    1. Will they truly return the hard drive back to _exactly_ how it was including the partition layout and pre-installed software?
    2. Will the recovery DVDs work even if the drive has been repartioned? I would like to split the system partition to give space for data files etc. But will this extra partition stop the recovery procedure working properly?
Please understand that I'm not interested in reformatting the entire drive. I just want to split the OS partition. But in case I have to replace the drive in the future or something I'd like to know how close to "original" these discs will get me, no matter what I do to the drive?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi
Im not 100% sure how the recovery works on the Toshiba Australian notebooks but I presume the Recovery CD contains the Toshiba image with the Windows OS, drivers, tools and utilities.
I think if you would use the Recovery CD then the whole HDD will be formatted and all partitions will be erased.
I think the recovery partition will be not created using the recovery CD because the recovery CD was already created so the recovery partition is not necessary anymore

  • Question about forum use regarding an error I am receiving

I am looking for an answer to the proper process I should follow when running into issues with Azure Storage. As I don't want to annoy folks with tossing questions into this forum regarding errors I'm running into that are more usage related instead
    of technical in scope.
For instance this morning I was attempting to view some details about a particular Storage item and was greeted with the following screen in the Azure Portal.
I was able to accomplish what I needed to (downloading some files out of this particular storage account) within the Manage.WindowsAzure.com site without issue. So this seems to be connected to the portal itself and it's interactions with Storage
(perhaps). I now have access to the above Storage item via the portal site, but for about 15 minutes I continually received the message above. Even after logging out, clearning cache, trying different browsers etc.
So my question(s) are; Are these forums the proper place to be posting information about issues we run into? If not what is the preferred method for reporting items like those above and getting help with remediating them in a timely manner?
I'm happy to put them here, just want to make sure there isn't a better place as I'm new to this.

    Hi Darren,
You can post your issue with Azure Storage in here. Just make sure that you do not give out any PII data.
Also, the above portal which you are viewing is still in preview. You may use "manage.windowsazure.com" portal to access your resource.

  • A Few Questions About Parallels 5 and Windows 7

    Hey guys!
So, I am taking a computer programming class that requires Windows, just so we can all be on the same screen at the same time (lame, I know). Anywho, I have a Mac, so my teacher provided me with a log-in to MSDNAA, to get Windows 7 for free, and he gave me Parallels 5.0 for free as well. (go community colleges!)
    A few questions:
1- I am running Snow Leopard right now on my 2009 MacBook Pro, and my processor is the 64-bit processor, but after running the command uname -a I discovered that my Kernal is loading in the 32-bit mode. Is this normal? Shouldn't it be running in 64-bit mode?
    2- Which Windows 7 should I get, the x64 or x86 (32-bit or 64-bit)?

  • Question about planning using serialization point in transaction S2L

    Hello colleagues!
Iu2019ve try to implement the supply of production line (supply area) just in sequence. R/3 received dependent requirements and backflushes of serialization point behind target Supply Area from APO.
Then I got a few dependent demands with indicator u201CXu201D in u201Crequirement is serializedu201D field in transaction S2L. I started the automatic planning  but replenishment proposal was created to cover all dependent demands. from the selection horizon  (with ind. u201CXu201D and without ). Please, help me to find solution.
    Thanks.
    Ivan.

Thanks for the feedback. I followed the link but I guess I just don't understand about the extended file system. Is HFS+ the same as Mac OS extended (Journaled).
    Basically, yes.
I understand that I guess that case sensitive means just that, but what is the difference between journaled and extended? Does it mena that a log file is only saved for the journaled system?
When a filesystem is journaled, all changes to it are written to a log.
Do most people just format as Extended without journaled? I am about to reformat my iMac and install Leopard on there and I was wondering if I should format using the extended or the extended with journal?
Using the journaling option slightly decreases the amount of space on the drive usable by you and increases the chance of recovering data from the drive if a problem occurred. If you want, you can use the Disk Utility to turn it on and off without erasing the drive again.

  • Qosmio G40-10Z: Question about energy use in sleepmode

When I turn my new Qosmio G40-10Z in sleeping mode, with full battery (and off the AC power), I can't start the computer next day. I can only start it up after connecting it to AC power. I get a message windows Vista wasn't closed properly and I am asked to start in normal way or safe mode.
After starting the battery indicates only 2% power. So, what is using power in sleeping mode? Why isn't the sleep mode not transferred to hibernation state when the battery is almost empty?
(New notebook, only vista and office installed and only television antenna is connected)

    Hello guys
At first I just want to write a little bit about theory. Microsoft has implemented standby/Hibernation mode to offer PC users comfortable OS usage and make switch ON/OFF time much shorter.
According to the definition standby mode should be used for short time (launch, meeting and if you must leave the notebook for few hours). Hibernation mode should be used if you leave the notebook over the night or maybe day or two. In standby mode all data will be written in RAM and to keep them notebook needs power. In Hibernation mode all data will be saved on to HDD and notebook can be switched OFF. In hibernation mode the notebook does not need permanent power supply.
For me it is really strange that you use standby mode with battery and almost 20 hours. With this I do not want to say that described battery issue is normal but for 20 hours it is logic to use hibernation mode.
Back to battery issue: only 20 hours under standby mode is really to short. I have tested it with my Tecra and after 5 days I was able to switch ON notebook as usual (only battery power supply.
In your case I see only two explanations:
    1. Somehow notebook can not switch into standby mode properly and stays running (I do not believe this because you can see if something like this happen)
    2. The battery is defective
What you should do is to contact Authorized service partner in your country. Make a call and explain the situation. Maybe you will get new battery or they should test it using your battery.
Sorry for this long posting. I wish you luck and hope you will clarify this issue very soon.
    Bye and good luck!

  • Question about PARALLEL hint

the documentation says that PARALLEL hint can by used in select statements like PARALLEL(emp 8). I have also seen syntaxes like PARALLEL, PARALLEL 8, PARALLEL(8), and in each case the steps in execution plans were the same but the cost assigned was a bit different between each version (but significantly lower than for a query without this hint).
    how does oracle interpret above three syntaxes, ie. /*+ PARALLEL */, /*+ PARALLEL 8 */, /*+ PARALLEL(8) */?
are there any parts in those syntaxes that are ignored or incorporate default behaviour?

  • Some questions about the use of the relay

I connect Relay coil  to the AC power source, but  the switch always act.Is there any suitable relay for ac power ?
and when I replaced time delay relay in simulation, there was an error.  I don't know how to get the right parameter setting ?
    please help.
    Attachments:
    time_delay relay.png ‏5 KB

    Hi there,
Thank you for your question. There are two ways to do this, for your origianl circuit you can connect the time delay relay in this way:
Set the frequency of the source to 1Hz and simulate, then you can see the NC and NO switch back and forth.
Second method: Instead of using a AC relay, we can use an AC coil which can be found at Electro_Mechanical-->COILS_RELAYS-->ENERGIZING_COIL_AC
In addition, we can add a normally closed (NC) contact or a normally open(NO) contact spicified for this AC coil(say K1)
Just type RELAY_CONTACT_NC or RELAY_CONTACT_NO to place the components and then place them under K1.
Change the Controlling device reference as shown in the picture below,
Now the AC relay can be constructed in this way.
For time delay, we can use TIME_DELAY_NC and TIME_DELAY_NO contact
    Hope these two methods help!:-)

  • Question about design - use patch-panels or switches in racks?

I'm trying to suggest should I use patch-panels in server 19" racks and use stand-alone telecomm racks for access layer switches
    OR
should I install 2-3 access layer switches in every server rack?
First version looks more correct, but than I have to use MUCH MORE cables, organizers etc - all of it eats place in data-center.
Maybe someone saw some guides for that question?
    Thanks!

2 or 3 access layer switches in every server rack? Considering typical stand-alone rack switches offer 24 or 48 ports, how many servers per rack or how big are these racks?! Or, were your intended access layer switches only 4 port switches?! (laugh)
The main disadvantage of rack switches, you either run out of ports or have too many ports. Since server hosts often push bandwidth harder than user hosts, you also have the issue of how much aggregate bandwidth you need to move out of an individual rack. These issues are better addressed by your suggestion of using patch panels from each rack that come to a network switch rack.
You're correct, all the cables, and their organization, has an expense, but this has to be considered against switch costs. Assuming you intend to use Enterprise switches that offer gig to the servers and perhaps 10 gig uplinks, there's a cost to having extra swiches by deploying to each rack. Also switches per rack would disallow the advantages you might find with a chassis switch in a switch rack. Further, depending on performance to provide, do you want to be limited by uplink bandwidth from each rack, or pay for high bandwidth from each rack that's usually underutilized.
Besides "looking right", the foregoing is often why there are server rack patch panels, etc.
One design, that I found interesting, was using the 3750 "stacked" across racks (guess you could do same with newer 2975s).
