Question about PDFs

I'm sending letters to publishers who request PDFs.
Using pages, I can choose the print option and make a PDF using Preview.
But I'm sure many of these publishers use Windoze. Can I still send it via Preview (Windows Friendly Attachments) or should I download Adobe Reader and save them in that format?
One other question. This is a ONE PAGE PDF -- but it keeps showing up as a two page PDF-- with the second page blank. How do I make it just show up as ONE PAGE?
Thanks, Dan

Adobe Reader won't generate PDFs. And I'd avoid it like the plague... it will hijack Safari's PDF viewing... really it's a piece of crap.
Generate a PDF via "print" as you've done and you can just email it. It will come across fine to Windows users, and there's no need to send Windows-friendly attachments.
If you want to chop off the second page, when you print, just select "print pages 1... to 1." before clicking the button to save as PDF. That will work fine... I do it all the time.

  • Questions about PDF exporting with InDe CS5.5

    Hey all,
A couple questions about exporting to PDF from the latest version of InDe.
First, I have noticed that it seems to take a lot longer to get to a PDF. Any suggestions for how to speed up the process? It took 8 minutes or so to generate a low-res PDF (for print) of a 24pp document with a few placed images and vector graphics. Wow, that's a long time to wait, especially for a proof.
Second, the background task... if I get it going on making that 8-minute PDF and then work some more on the document, what exactly is in the PDF? Usually I save before making a PDF or printing. So, is the last version saved what will be in the PDF?
(As an aside, this ability to work on the doc while generating a PDF seems kind of weird. Generally one makes a PDF for proofing, or even for printing, when all the changes have been made and everything is "final". So, I see no benefit to being able to work on my document while it's making a PDF, as I'm probably finished making revisions for the time being. I have to say that I kind of like the progress bar you get when you make an interactive PDF, as you know you can't work on the document when that's on the screen... )
    Thanks as always.

Yes, this is abnormally long (and too long), something is wrong. What's the full version of InDesign you are running, as reported by holding down Cmd or Control and selecting About InDesign?

Saving is not related. InDesign makes a database snapshot of your document the moment you begin the PDF export, and makes the export relative to that snapshot, regardless of edits you continue to make during the export process, and regardless of saving. Of course saving first is a good idea, for several reasons, not the least of which it sounds like something's fairly seriously wrong with your document or your InDesign installation.
We recommend you trash your preferences and export your document to IDML and see if either of those things changes this 8-minute behavior...err, assuming you're running 7.5.2.318.

Yeah, I think the primary benefit is if you are likely to work on 2 or more files in parallel, so you can finish A and export A and then switch to B. If you'd like a dialog box to pop up when export is done, check out my exportPop script from this post: ANN: automatic dialog after background export (exportPop.jsx.

  • 2 part question about PDF output in RoboHelp 8

I've been able to generate fairly clean-looking PDFs in RoboHelp with the entire Help contents.
    My 2 questions are:
    1)  Is there a way to generate a Word document from the Help contents?  I notice that when I choose "batch generate" it appears to generate
a Word doc that behaves as a distiller file and then creates a PDF.  Is there a way to generate just a Word document?
    2)  If not, is there a way to set the settings within RoboHelp to allow you to edit the text in the generated PDF?
I do not have the full version of Acrobat and can't edit text with Adobe Reader.
    thanks for any feedback!

  • A question about pdf form filling?

    Hello,
I received a form in PDF format as an attachment in an e-mail reply from a travel company. I have to fill in this form and return it to the sender.
I could print out the PDF form manually fill the required field and either fax to them or scan & send it as an attachment BUT
I would wish to open the document on my Mac Book Air -fill in the requested field by typing in my Mac Book Air and send it back as an attachment.
Is that possible? I could not do this in my Win 7 computer but wondered if my Mac would have tricks up it's sleeve to accomplish this task?
Thank you for your time to answer my question.
    Regards

Thank you for your time and an answer.
    I do have Microsoft Word.
I do not know how to insert the PDF as watermark. Where do you find the picture radio button?
Would you mind telling the step involved  in getting my pdf file opened in the Microsoft Word?

  • Question about PDFs in browser

Hi, for my organization, we want to force users to open PDFs in Adobe Reader and not open them in the browser window which we've set up using the configuration wizard and that's not a problem.
My problem is that we have one particular site that won't allow us to view the PDF on it if the view in browser functionality is disabled.  I tried turning on the option in the wizard to give the Open/Save dialog when PDFs are opened in the browser, but I don't ever get a prompt for this document when it's enabled.
I wanted to see if there is any way to specify individual web sites as being able to view PDFs in the browser, but generally leave that functionality disabled.
    Thanks for any help,
    Jared

If you turn off javascript or java for the website you can probably download the pdf with no issue. I know of no way to set the behavior since it is a browser issue not an Acrobat or Reader issue.

  • Questions about PDF Printing

    Hello!
Is there any way that I can print a single page from a PDF on the back of every other page in that PDF?
    Here's the example-
We use a report for certified payroll. The front of each report is different, but the back has all of the legal jargon on it that is required by the government.
Is there a way that I can print the report, and have Acrobat print the same thing on the back of each report without having to add that page everywhere I want it printed?
    Thanks!

Not really. What you can do, though, is first print out the backs of all the pages, and then insert those pages (reversed) into your printer and print the actual file.
The only other option of doing it in Acrobat is by using a custom-made script.

  • Questions about using a PDF form online

I have a client who wants to create an online version of a PDF form that they are currently using. I am currently trying to explain to them that this would be best done as an HTML web form, but I may not win this argument. I have only used PDFs for printed forms (either hand-written or using form fields) so I am not familiar with any problems that converting the form for use online would entail.
When the 'Submit' button is pressed on the form, is there a way to redirect to another web page after the data is submitted? (i.e. does the PDF have access to it's outer 'environment'?)
Are there any security issues submitting data using the PDF form as opposed to using a standard web form? (There may be sensitive data being submitted)
I'm not sure how they plan to handle the data that is submitted, but there are several options in the submitForm parameters - I am assuming that using the HTML option would submit the data in the same format as a web form would. Am I correct here?
Can the PDF be prevented from being downloaded or printed? This form should only be used to submit data to their server, not as a printed form.
Are there any other 'gotchas' that I need to look out for? Does anyone have a recommendation for a site which contains any tutorials or guidelines for using PDF forms online?

    Thanks for the information.
Yes, I agree that there is less reason for it to be a PDF form (Actually, no real reason other than the original form already exists in PDF), but I am unfortunately in the position that my input in this project is not necessarily being considered (my company is following direct -and inconsistent- directions from the client, and I have no contact with the client to ask questions about what their actual needs are). I have been told to give the client the 'Tomato' that they are asking for, even though they are describing an 'Apple'.
The reason this form is not meant to be printed is that we have replaced the 'Signature' fields from the original form with checkboxes that the user must check to confirm they have 'signed' the document. If they are to print/fax/whatever the document, they should use the original form, not this one. And I am still trying to explain to them that this would be better served with an HTML web form, but I fear I am losing that battle.
I have brought up the fact that it is not 100% guaranteed that Acrobat will be available in the browser, although I can only guess that it is less than likely that anyone will not have some sort of PDF viewer available to their browser.
I will also mention that issues may arise if the file is not submitted from within the browser.

I have a question about extracting pages.  When I do the function, adobe saves the individual files as "<file name><space><page number>", so the files look like this "filename 1.pdf", "filename 2.pdf", "filename 3.pdf".  Without too many gory details, I am using excel to concatenate some data to dynamically build a hyperlink to these extraced files.  It casues me problems, however, for the space to be the the file name.  Is there any way to change the default behavoir of this function to perhaps use a dash or underscore instead of a space?

No, you can't change the default naming scheme. You can do it yourself if you extract the pages using a script instead of using the built-in command.

  • Questions about my PDF portfolio.

I have only a few questions about a CD portfolio I am designing with Acrobat Professional (8.0)
There were a few things i couldn't figure out on my own.
I have about 15-20 pieces to show on CD, but there is no web design involved, so I couldn't use my own web site layout to just throw onto CD, out of that convenience.
    1) How do you make sure the PDF will always opens at the size you want?
For example, whenever I set the document at actual size (100% view) I close and open the document, and it reopens at a random size, such as 317 percent.
    WTH?
    2) Where can I find examples of design portfolios that were designed in Acrobat? Everyone's portfolio is online these days, which is not my style.
    3) Is it possible to make a 'thumbnail view' on the first PDF page (like you would see in a gallery on a website) that links from that page to any one of the 15-20 pieces?
    Any advice is much appreciated.

I also found another stuipd thing in some Java games the phone still has the tilt sensor active in games and software.
Some games end up with graphic glitches forcing you to restart them, some display a message saying its unsupported and some support it partially (The number keys for navigation stay like they are in portrait which is of course messed up (The phone seems to change the navigation keys internally though so that does work)

  • Answer to question about "Error Occurring when convertion is tried for PDF to Word Document"

There are about ten questions about the "Error Occurring" when  using Abode Reader XLto convert a PDF to a Word Doc, but no one has the answer? It has something to do with "signing in  the wrong address". I have been working on this three days Now! Soimeone has the answer? Cataloochee

You must be kidding to say, "Adobe doesn't convert any version of Adobe Reader."'  I must be in another world! When i move an Adobe Reader file pdf that goes to a wIndow that the top line says,'' Adobe reader X1 1001 Early Dutch History. pdf ". Then i click on the far left yellow marked icon that is used to move 1001 Early Dutch History.pdf to thye far right into a gray colored slot that reads "1001 Early Dutch History.pdf'. Under the file above  or down below, the selected File for conversionis, a selection gray slot that ask if you want to convert this file(pdf) to a .docx.,.doc, tex. or Excell. After I make the selection and click onto Convert, a message comes into view where the word convert was that reads "An Error Occurred wilth Signing In  OK" Even the use of another pdf file with a complete different address produces the same message. There are eight chapters in Dutch that I need to convert to word document by tommorrow or the class i teach "the Origin of Golf" will have to listen in Dutch and I can't speak Dutch. Cataloochee

  • Hello question about certified pdf

    Hello,
I have a question about certified pdf.
My client wants to have a certified pdf , when  I make a high resolution PDF in CMYK is this oke for print media?
Or do I need to do somthing els??
    Ton

As Dov says, it's very likely that what they actually mean is a PDF/X file - some flavors of which you can make from InDesign using the Export > PDF (Print) dialog presets, and some you can make using Acrobat Pro.
However it's very important to find out exactly what they want:
There a couple of versions of PDF/X (the older PDF/X-1a is very widely supported but can only cope with CMYK - the newer PDF/X-4 is more flexible and handles things like spot colors, but is often not printable on older hardware).
When exporting to CMYK you have to choose a color profile - and that will depend on the printer's hardware and proofing systems. You may have to choose exactly the right one, or they may be able to convert back from any profile - until you find out you're working in the dark.
Of course you also need to know the printer's rules about bleed, TAC, etc.

Yes, especially if you save the document in Word format.
You can also save it in PDF and a simple text file (but the layout could be modified if you open it in Office).
