Question about permissions repair, strange messages

The following was the result from my recent repair after installing 10.5.1 Are these results normal with so much not being repaired?
Warning: SUID file "usr/libexec/load_hdi" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Versions/A/Resources /DiskManagementTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.

  • Question about permissions in portal content

    Hi all,
I'd like to ask you guys a question about permissions given to pages in the portal content (EP 6.0).
When a user accesses a page that contains an iView (for example one for a Web Dynpro, or for a BSP), and the page permissions are correctly set for the user (or a group the user is member of), everything works fine and the user can see and use the application contained in the iView.
If the Page has no permissions set and the user tries to access this page, an empty page appears instead and the "Detailed Navigation" column appears on the left.
I know I should not let the user see the link to the page he is not authorized to use (this is done managing the roles given to the user), but I'd like to know from you if it is possible to show a message like "unauthorized user" instead of the empty page that appears.
Can you also tell me how to keep the "Detailed Navigation" column hidden on the extreme left?
Thank you for any hint you can give to me.
    Lorenzo

    Hi Lorenzo,
a way how you might go ahead and hide or show content for specific user groups is via roles merging (see documentation <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/53/89503ede925441e10000000a114084/content.htm">http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/53/89503ede925441e10000000a114084/content.htm</a>
In essence, this means that you create for example 2 roles (A and B): A contains some content everyone can see, B more secure content for another group. You merge those 2 roles via a merge ID - and if a user has both roles, he sees the content in this workset with all the navigation options. If somebody only has role A, he will only see this content.
Maybe this is someting that could help with you considerations (always depending on the number of items that are affected, this might be a useful way, or leading to too much confusion, because you have too much different roles).
    Best regards
    Jana

  • Quick Question re Permissions Repair and Accounts

Does a permissions repair apply across all user accounts? A friend has one account they can't access (sticks after log-in screen) but other accounts that they can. As a first try I want to suggest they try and repair permissions but not sure if this will work for the account they can't log-in to being run from one they can?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

Repair Permissions only affects system files used by all users, so is unlikely to fix a problem that only affects one user. That user may have a bad login item ("Accounts" system preference"). Try starting in Safe Mode.

  • Repair Permissions leaves strange message.

Right after upgrading to SNOW, I did Repair Permissions. ( I have found that after installing or upgradings, that repairing permissions saves me a lot of headaches down the line.)
    These messages came up:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Reso urces/Locum" has been modified and will not be repaired.
What is this? Should I be concerned about it?

    Sharon:
No worries...totally innocuous for your use.
This article from Apple explains it and is for 10.5, but applies to SL as well:

  • Permissions repair warning message

...what does this mean and is it something I need to be concerned about?

You could try manually re-installing the Apple Remote Desktop 3.2.1 Client software. Then run the Disk Utility and repair permissions to see if the files were replaced with the correct permissions.

  • I have a question about a repair

Apple is sending me a replacement phone and on the iphone 5 that I have right now I have apple care plus. How will this transfer to the new phone since they will have different serial numbers?

A friendly suggestion: search the forum before posting a question. This one is asked almost every day.
The errors are spurious. Ignore them.
Although repairing permissions is a popular ritual, it's almost never useful. Don't waste time on it unless you have a specific reason to think it's necessary.

  • Basic questions about recovery/repair preparation

When I got my machine, over two years ago, I made repair disks on DVD's per Toshiba's instructions. Now, with my nightly backups, I have it make a system disk image on a NAS device.
If I were to have a large failure and need to restore my system,  is there anything I can do now that would prevent me from having to go back to my inital system install of two+ years ago and start reinstalling everything?
I guess what I'm wondering is if would making another set of more recent repair disks be useful at all in giving me a "jump start" on recovery and how my scheduled system disk image fits into the picture. I've heard some folks say system disk images from a NAS device can't be used but they were not particularly credible sources so I don't know.
Probably pretty basic questions, but having recently had a scare with my machine, I want to be sure I'm as prepared as I can be.
    Thanks.

Now, with my nightly backups, I have it make a system disk image on a NAS device.  ....  I've heard some folks say system disk images from a NAS device can't be used...
If you cannot boot from an optical disc or flash drive to a program that restores from that NAS image, Sally, then it's useless. What system/procedures are you using? Read the manual.
The original recovery discs in my view are not very helpful. I would use them only to establish whether hardware is at fault when debugging a problem. Daily backups are the best source of recovery. We keep ours for ten days and test the recovery procedure from time to time.
Most of us who make backup disk images create them on an external drive connect via USB. Windows 7 already has such a backup program. One can boot from a repair disc to restore that image.
As you realize, this is important Let's sort it out.

  • Question about permissions

I have 2 users in a computer that mounts a directory from a server via nfs.
That directory is used to share files between users.
When a user creates a file in that directory the permissions are rw-r--r-- (the default umask 022). Since it is a shared directory, I would like new files to have rw-rw-r-- permissions.
I do not want to change the default global umask of 022, because that is ok everywhere else. I just would like to set an umask 002 only in the shared directory.
Any ideas about what direction to follow
    Regards

I got my new MacBook Pro and wanted to import items from the Time Machine backup of my old one. I didn't want to do a complete import though, so I went ahead through the setup of my MacBook instead of using migration assistant, and created my account, etc. After fully updating my new MacBook, I then decided to pull my Pictures, Music, Movies, and Documents off of my Time Machine backup from my old one. I connected to my backup and then ran migration assistant to import those items. I selected them and told it to import, but it said that it couldn't create the user account because there was one already named that on my system ( I used the same name on this new MacBook as my old one ) so I just told it to transfer it to a new account called temp. It did that and moved over the items that I had selected.
When I went to the folder of the temp user to copy those items over, I did not have permission to do it. That directory was locked, even though I was an administrator of this computer. I went to the permissions of the user "temp" and added my user account, then gave my self read & write permissons. I then told it to copy those changes to all folders (forget the exact setting for this but that is what I did) and it worked fine.
you *should not* have done this. in general, you should NEVER use "apply to enclosed items" on ANY system created folders and the startup drive. that includes your home folder, your Desktop folder, your Pictures folder etc. y=use it ONLY on folders you make yourself. The reasons is that such folders often have hidden ACLs and by using "apply to enclosed items" you propgate them to everything inside. in particular any home directory has "everyone deny delete" ACLs which will prevent you from changing, renaming or deleting anything with that ACL without entering an admin password. this is why you see that custom field in permissions. where exactly are the items with such permissions located? you need to clear those ACLs from them.

  • Question about Windows repair installation

    Hello,
I have searched through the forum, but am still a little confused as to the use of expert recovery mode on my Toshiba recovery CD.
I cannot boot Windows at all. I haven't backed up any of my data (foolish!).
I currently have a single partition.
Is it possible to create a second partition using expert recovery mode, and re-load Windows to that. Would this only format one partition, allowing me to subsequently retrieve files from the first partition?
Or will this format the whole drive, load Windows, and then create the partitions?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Fitz.

    Hello Fitz
Expert mode allows you to do two things:
    1. Install OS on already persisting partition (if the HDD has already two of them)
    2. Create own partition (in this case the whole content will be erased)
Please try to boot up using SAFE mode (press F60). If this doesnt help you can do the follow to save your data:
    1. Connect the HDD to other PC as external device (using USB HDD box)
the HDD should be recognized automatically and you can copy all your data to other PC HDD
    2. You can try to use Partition Magic tool. Start it using external FDD and create two partitions. After doing this start your notebook with start disk and try to copy all the data to second partition.
Detailed explanation about expert mode installation and how to create own partition you can find under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=4462&messageID=14518

  • Question about iMessage retrieval when messages are visible with "Search" feature

    Hello everyone,
Today when I got off of work, I noticed that over 1,000 iMessages from my girlfriend had been deleted, dating as far back as when I purchased my iPhone 4 in June. Of course, I am in the process of freaking out, as we had some great conversations in there that I would like to save. The last time I backed up my iPhone was in September.
The thing is, when I search for her name with the iPhone "Search" function, all of those conversations appear as if they should be in the iMessage list, but they are not. Is there anyway for me to exploit this and restore these iMessages onto my phone?
I'm an Air Force pilot in Texas and don't get to see her much, so I would love to be able to save these messages. I also went to school for electrical engineering, and I'm stumped.
tl;dr iMessages accidentally deleted but still appear in the iPhone "Search" function - is there anyway to restore them?

Unfortunately, not that I'm aware of.  The cached data you are seeing in Spotlight search is separate from the messages data on your phone, and you can't restore from one to the other.
Messages are, however, included in the iPhone backup (whether done with iTunes or iCloud).  If these messages were on your phone when you last backed up, restoring to the entire backup should recover them.

  • Question about phone repairs

I'm sending my lumia 800 to my network for "repair" (not sure what they are going to do though as as far as i'm aware there is no definitive cause for the issue) due to the shocking battery life. Light user is eating away at battery craaaazzzyily.
I got this email from them today
I've now booked your phone in for repair. We will send you out a pre-paid repairs envelope, please allow up to 5 days for delivery of this.
If you have any content on your phone, like contacts or pictures, save them to your SIM card, memory card or computer as these may be lost during repair. For help doing this check your user guide. Then remove your SIM, memory card and the back cover of your phone, you'll need to keep these for your repaired phone. Please make sure you send your battery and charger with your phone, they'll need to be wrapped up safely to avoid any damage. It normally takes three to five working days for your phone to be repaired and returned, working days exclude weekends and bank holidays. If we can't repair your phone within warranty you may be charged a fee. We'll send you a letter explaining this and what to do next. We will try our best to repair your phone, but may exchange it with a refurbished one of the same or higher value and of a different make or colour.
Am I being unreasonable asking them to NOT give me an old refurbished handset (especially in a different colour or make) that someone else either broke or didn't want? I'm paying £30/m for this...do I not deserve a brand new working handset? :/

We will try our best to repair your phone, but may exchange it with a refurbished one of the same or higher value and of a different make or colour.
I just sent mine in for repairs, I hope I don't end up w/  a pink one.

  • Question about content of alert messages

I created some alerts that are called via actions. I customazed for alerts alert categories with short and long texts.
Now when the alert is generated I get in my outlook e-mail for this alert and in the e-mail I get short and long text defined for alert. And I have admin authotizations.
On the other hand users without admin privileges get the e-mail but in e-mail is not displayed short and long text of alert. I added them authorizations for usage of all texts but it doesn't help. Are there any paramethers or special authorizations that I have to assign them.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Question about RSD repairs

I noticed a number of people get their bezel and top case replaced along with the logic board and/or heatsink.
Is that only for those white MacBooks with discoloration and users with fit problems with their bezel?

My black MacBook had the top case replaced as well. Before, when I would press the power button to get the shut down menu, I would hear some squeaks from the case on the right hand side. Now that sound is gone. The case seems much more solid.
