Question about "Power On Start Test"

Hi... I have owned TWO MacBook Pro's, one built back in 2006 and a newer one built in 2009 (both 17 inch)... On either one of them, on say about every 20th or so "pressing of the power key" to start the machine, rather than hearing the mac startup chime and see the screen light up within a few seconds, instead there is no chime and the screen stays black for a long time, maybe up to 30 seconds... Then the chime sounds and the screen comes to life.
If it's quiet in the room when this event (or non-event) happens I can usually hear the quiet sounds you hear when the machine is starting, a bit of clicking and perhaps the sound of the hard drive starting up (??, never been sure what those sounds are other than to say they are "normal"). But you don't hear the chime and nor does the screen light up until some time significantly later...
It's been my belief though not my knowledge that when this happens, again maybe one in every 20 or so starts, that it is the Power on Start Test that is, for some reason, not completing quickly but instead taking some time for whatever reason... If I'm patient, eventually, like in maybe up to 30 seconds, I then hear the chime and away it goes...
Again, this occurs on not one but two different MacBook Pro's and it's done it on both of them at what I would guess would be this same 5% rate since both were new... And over all versions of operating systems that those two machines have seen... So it does NOT appear to be anything tied to something faulty in the individual computer unless I just go so unlucky as to buy two machines 3 years apart that both came with the same problem (unlikely)... I also have an older G4 desktop at home and I have a G5 desktop at work... I've never noticed this on either of those machines so this would perhaps appear to be laptop related????
But as I peruse around and look for other folks who describe such an issue, I don't find much... So, I decided to post this question...
Can anyone offer insight into what might be going on??? Is it a problem??? Might it be hardware, software, what??? Any feedback would be much appreciated...
thanks... bob..

  • Follow up question about interpreting smart data test on 160GB classic

    I posted this question regarding the problem I am having with my 160GB ipod classic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2153948&tstart=0
    It appears noone is able to help me, so I have found some more information:
    In short, itunes will not write to my 160GB ipod once it reaches about 35GB / 160. Windows will write to it, but only at 500KB/sec rather than the usual 19+Mb/sec. It just crawls once it hits that point. After following some advice online I came up with the following results using the HD tests in diagnostic mode.
    smart data test:
    retracts: 138
    rallocs: 563
    pending sector: 55
    poweron hours: 1016
    starts/stops: 267
    temp: current 26C
    temp: min 19C
    temp: max 53C
    and for the HDD spec test:
    sno: (not sure if i should post a serial number?)
    FW Revision: NB100-05
    LBAs: 0x12a19eb0
    These are the only tests that show up under the I/O HardDrive section. Should there be more? It seems like there might be from what I read, but I am not sure.
    Anyway, any help interpreting these results would be greatly appreciated.

    etc.
    Your drive is probably toast. Compare your SmartData stats with mine:
    Retracts: 844
    *Reallocs: 12*
    *Pending Sectors: 0*
    PowerOn Hours: 2037
    Starts/Stops: 830
    Temp: Current 29c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50C
    I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. From the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
    Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
    Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
    I'm sure you'll find the counts go up if you try to do a surface scanning disk check. Sorry it's not better news but at least you know where the problem lies. Assuming your iPod is out of warranty it's probably time to get your iPod refurbished with a new drive or to buy a new iPod.

  • General question about Power BI

    Hi there,
    Newbies on Power BI, i wonder if it is THE solution for my need.
    I have a database on MYSQL from which i need to create charts ( bar chart, pie and so one).
    But, i need those data in real time, dynamics way.
    And i need to show those dynamics charts on an HTML page.
    So is Power BI with Sharepoint is the best solution for that case?

  • MSI X79A-GD45 8D overclocking 3930k question about Power Saving Features

    hi guys
    i could do the oc for my 3930k.Now i am on 4.3ghz.Here are the settings i made ;
    i didnt change the cpu multiplier left it on auto.
    EIST and Turbo features are on.I just change the multpliers of the core limits for every core.I made core limit 43 for all cores.
    Also i set the vcore offset feature to %12.5 and it made the voltage under load 1.280 which can hold system stable @ 4.3ghz.
    when cpu is idle multiplier and voltage decreasing and when the cpu is under load voltages and multipliers increase.
    thats what i want.  But;
    i tested the vcore offset as %100 the auto voltage under load increases to max 1.344.If i go for 4.8ghz probably i would need more than 1.344 on this situation what will happen?because i will need more than 1.344 but the auto voltage will give me just 1.344.How can we arrange this?
    then i tried to enter voltage manually but the voltage didnt decrease even all the power saving features on.I haven't change any settings  i mentioned above for the 4.3ghz oc.I just changed the vcore voltage to manuel. Everything stayed the same like decreasing multiplier under idle and increasing multipliers under load except the voltage.It stayed the same as i gave in the bios.
    from here
    I read from somewhere that on msi boards if you put the cpu multipler manually you loose power saving features.Everytime under load or idle cpu will be stay at the same ghz.Is that true?
    if i give the cpu multiplier manuel or vcore voltage can i benefit from the power saving features like  decreasing voltages and multiplier under idle and  and incresing them under load ?
    or when i enter the cpu multiplier and voltage manually ,does the power saving features go away?

    VDroop set to 100% is all you are going to get. 1.344v's should get you about 44-46X on the cores on 'Auto'. The voltage goes down from there with the lower VDroop settings. With CPU V. set to 'Auto', you get power saving, soon as the CPU V. is taken out of 'Auto', you lose it. No, the CPU speed may lower, but the voltage going to it will not.
    VDroop is not a true offset feature like can be found on other brands of boards. https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162779.0
    Most folks around the industry recognize 1.350v's as the recommended limit for socket 2011 CPU's, so 1.344v's is fairly close to that anyway.
    So when i set the voltage and the cpu multiplier i loose power saving features right?
    Thanks for the reply

  • TOP questions about Software Updates - start here

    How do I update the software of my Nokia device?
    You can update the software of most Nokia devices by downloading the software directly to your phone, or by using Nokia Software Updater, Nokia's free PC software.
    Learn how and find out which methods are available for your device at
    http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/update-your-phone/
    How do I know when there is new software available for my Nokia device?
    There are several ways to be notified about new sw versions for each Nokia device:
    1) Use Nokia Suite
    Whenever you connect your device to the latest version of Nokia Suite with a compatible USB cable, Nokia Suite will check if there is an update for your device. Note that this notification only works when you use a USB cable connection.
    2) Check online
    You can easily check the latest available version on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
    Currently Nokia does not publish the expected release dates for future software versions.
    What has been updated in each new software version?
    Main updates are published on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
    Here are some of the most common questions from the Nokia Software Update FAQ:
    Why has my device changed language after updating?
    After an update, your Nokia device may restart in its native language. Changing back to your preferred language can be done from the phone settings. Full instructions may vary depending on the phone model, if you need help you can download the full user guide for your phone from the support pages of your country's Nokia web site - visit www.nokia.com/support for more details.
    If your Nokia device was originally manufactured for use in another country or region, using Nokia Software Updater may revert the set of available device languages to the original language set.
    If your preferred language is no longer available after using Nokia Software Updater, you may need to return your Nokia device to a Nokia Care point to have this language reinstated.
    Other people can update their software but I cannot, although we have the same Nokia device model. What's wrong?
    Update availability is based on many things, including existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. It may be due to one of these variables that your Nokia device isn't eligible for updates.
    Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available.
    Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants have the latest Nokia device firmware. It is our priority to update all variants as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any delay. New software may become available at a later date, however, so please check again soon.
    Why doesn’t Nokia Suite detect my device?
    Sometimes the drivers for your Nokia device and associated connectivity cables can become corrupted.
    To resolve this, uninstall and re-install Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater:
    - In your PC’s Control Panel, go to Add/Remove programs
    - Uninstall Nokia Suite (if there are more than one entries uninstall all of them)
    - Go to www.nokia.com/support to download and install the latest version of Nokia Suite
    I am not able to use Nokia Suite on any PC and my device does not support updates directly over the air. Is there an alternative way to update my device's software?
    If you are not able to use Nokia Software Updater, you can visit your nearest authorized Nokia Care Point to have your software updated. Note that this may incur a charge. Locations for Nokia Care Points globally are available at the support page for your country, for details please visit http://www.nokia.com/global/support/locations/

    If that, or other power problems, happen very often, consider geting a U.P.S. (Uninterruptible Power Supply, aka Battery Backup) for your Mac.  You can now get ones that will run your Mac for several minutes for $80 or so.

  • Hypothetical question about power adaptors

    I'm thinking about getting a Internet TV, the TV in question isnt wireless so was wondering whether its possible to have 1 powerline adapter into the hub, the other from the Vision box as normal but then buy another adaptor to plug in the TV? Would this be feasible or cause interference/slow the speed down etc?

    it wouldnt work, it'd be like splitting one ethernet cable and using it in two devices, its a great idea powerline adapters but very limited.
    Isn't that what routers/switches are designed to do though?
    The limit as always though is the overall throughput design of the powerline adaptors or ethernet devices.

  • Question about the Before/After/Test metadata tags

    i think that i have read all of the appropriate sections on the wiki but i am a little unclear on how/when i need to add extra info to the Before/After/Test metadata tags.
    thus far, i have not done any unit tests that require a component to be added to the display list.  i was reading the section on how to do that and i see that all of the above mentioned tags have extra info:
    [Before( async, ui )], [After( async, ui )] and [Test( async, ui )]
    what do those do and when/why do i need to use them?
    thanks
    additionally, i am trying to run this simple example derived from what's on the wiki and it always times out.
    package HM.FO.User {
    import mx.controls.Button;
    import mx.events.FlexEvent;
    import org.flexunit.Assert;
    import org.flexunit.async.Async;
    import org.fluint.uiImpersonation.UIImpersonator;
    public class UserWindowPresenterTest {
    //protected var window:UserWindow;
    protected var button:Button;
    [Before( async, ui )] public function setUp():void {
    //this.window = new UserWindow();
    this.button = new Button();
    //Async.proceedOnEvent( this, this.window, FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, 20000 );
    Async.proceedOnEvent( this, this.button, FlexEvent.CREATION_COMPLETE, 20000 );
    //UIImpersonator.addChild( this.window );
    UIImpersonator.addChild( this.button );
    [Before( async, ui )] public function tearDown():void {
    //UIImpersonator.removeChild( this.window );
    //this.window = null;
    UIImpersonator.removeChild( this.button );
    this.button = null;
    [Test( async, ui )] public function on_user_saved_clears_password_fields():void {
    // this.window.pass_txt.text = "foo";
    // this.window.pass_confirm_text.text = "bar";
    // var presenter:UserWindowPresenter = this.window.presenter as UserWindowPresenter;
    // presenter.on_user_saved( null );
    // Assert.assertNull( this.window.pass_txt.text );
    // Assert.assertNull( this.window.pass_confirm_text.text );
    Assert.assertTrue( true );

    Okay, so the async modified is used to indicate that the asynchronous statement will be used.
    There is a bit of overhead adding async to tests, so, we don't actually instantiate the code that handles Async unless the async attribute is in the Before, After or Test. If you don't place the async in these tags [Test(async)] and attempt to use the async code. Async.whatever... you will get an error.
    Regarding the ui, attribute, the same concept was intended to apply for ui elements... in other words we wouldn't build the necessary infrastructure.. that is an optimization and right now is not in play. so you will not see different behavior with or without the ui.
    If I copy your code directly from below and paste it in my environment it passes.

  • Quick question about power adapter

    Is it okay to leave the power adapter on for a long period of time? would it mess with the battery if its on power adapter for long? or once the battery is charged does the computer use the adapter or battery(which keeps charging)?

  • A question about ordering 32-bit Test drive DVDs on SAP Knowledge Shop

    Dear all,
    I ordered the following DVDs on the SAP Knowledge Shop website:
    - SAP NW2004s Testdrive Linux DB2 PPC
    - SAP NW2004s Testdrive MaxDB
    And it seems that the first one works with 32-bit linux.
    Because, this is the first time that I order something on this site, there is something that I didn't fully understand. Apparently
    the DVDs are free. However there will be a shipping cost, which for me will be 15 Euros (I'm living in France). But when I completed the order form with my name, address, email, etc. there was no field for credit card number (for the shipping payment). I just received an order number and that's all. So finally how should I pay for the articles shipping?

  • Questions about Real Application Testing(RAT)

    Hi All,
    We have a production database running on 10gR3 on a server with local drives, while we have a Oracle 11gR2 DB running on a server with NFS mounts (using S7310 - AmberRoad) i.e. Faster and better storage.
    We captured the load on 10gR3 and replayed it on 11gR2. We noticed the following:
    (1) Replay is considerably slow even though Oracle11gR2 instance has a faster storage. We suspect that it may be something to do with the buffer cache / SGA because there is nothing in cache on the target (we didn't shutdown 10gR2 DB for capture) – what should we do then?
    (2) To make sure that we can take the advantage of cache, we replayed the load 2nd time right after the 1st replay and everything ran to our surprise. So we are wondering how’s that possible since we did not restore the DB as we do not want to wipe off the cache (chicken and egg situation)? Does Oracle rollback the changes after the replay?
    (3) Do we have to restore database on Target every time we do replay? But if we do that then we won't have anything in the SGA.
    So we need your advise and also would like to know how everyone else is doing this testing?
    Regards,
    RJiv.

    DB Replay's workload capture facility allows you to either start capture from a closed (mounted) database (capture starts upon opening the DB), or to begin capture mid-stream during normal activity. Starting capture on the production system from a closed database eliminates the divergence in performance resulting from a primed cache, as well as possible data divergence issues from open, partially-completed transactions at the time the capture started.
    For many customers, it will clearly not be possible to close their database during peak periods (!!)
    One way to address the cache priming issue is to start capture in production from a closed state during a low period of activity, and the allow capture to run through the peak period.
    Another approach is to start capture mid-stream with the DB open and to run capture for a long period (long enough to stabilize the cache). When performing the replay, begin a new AWR snapshot after the cache has stabilized.
    Your question about running the replay again after the first replay is done is confusing. Of course you will not get meaningful data from that, since replay must begin from the capture start SCN. If you run replay twice in a row without reverting the database to the capture start SCN, it will be applying meaningless changes to a database in a state that is unlike that of the original. You will be testing the data errors codepath instead of real performance.
    It is typical to enable database flashback on the repay database so that it can be repeatedly reverted to the capture start SCN for testing under a variety of scenarios.
