Question about Preview

In Preview (in Tiger) I had the ability to draw a solid yellow box onto a pdf document and type information into the box (a Comment Box). It appears that feature has been replaced in Preview (version 4) in Leopard by the Notes tool. The problem is with the notes, it appears you would only see the note text on the screen and not when you print out the page (like in Preview in Tiger). Is there any way to get the old style note function back?
Thanks.
David

David,
I'm running a year(s) behind you with Tiger and an older version of Preview (2.1.1). I would like to be able to add comments to photos that I have exported to the desk top in PDF format as you indicate you used to be able to do but I can not find how to enable this feature. Sorry I'm not solving your current problem but if you have a minute and could you tell me how it work it the "old days" I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Steve

Hello guys, I have a question about Preview - How do you loop a slideshow?

Had the "loop" feature using Preview in 10.4.11; upgaded to 10.5.8 and it's gone. Don't you have to work at "Taking" it away? Makes no sense. Now you have to look for a third market for something that was included in Preview since the first version was launched.  ....I don't get this one.

  • Two questions about Preview

In earlier OS versions, particularly on the MacWorld website, I was able to find a workaround so that PDFs do not automatically open in Safari - and that they are downloaded and pop-up immediately in Preview. Here are my two questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a new workaround for Lion - so that, when I engage a PDF link, it opens directly in Preview?
    2. Preview is now a far-less impressive software, without a "save as" command as well as a few other changes that make no sense. does anyone know a way to modify Preview to add back these functions?
Thanks so much for any help. would love to share this on my blog once I get it answered.
    Will

    thanks CT.
    1. Couldn't find that menu item in preferences - I'm probably just dense.
    2. Figured. don't like some of the macro changes they made to the OS - perplexing to say the least. Preview is a dog now.

  • Question about Preview files

So I understand clearly, when you're working on a RAW image are you actually seeing the "preview" file on screen or the actual RAW file?
I'd hate to judge the adjustments I'm making based on a jpeg.

Previews are optional, but they are used inside Aperture for slideshows and displayed when the master is offline and at other times as well. You can control the size and compression quality, and you can decide which projects have previews. You can even decide on an image by image basis.
You might decide to make previews for older projects and take the masters offline, or you might make previews for newer projects to share them with iLife and iWork (or other applications via drag-and-drop)
The settings for compression and quality are in Preferences. The control over which images and projects have previews is by control-clicking on projects in the project pane and images in the browser.
Oh, and there is control in the little gear menu thing next to the "All Projects" at the top of the projects pane. That keeps the previews updated whenever the image is adjusted.
There is a lot of info in the user manual on this. See page 160.

  • Recent Upgrade to 10.4--Question about Preview

I can live with this, but it sure is annoying! I recently upgraded to 10.4. All is fine, except when I open pictures in Preview and then try to transfer them to the desktop (a "sort" process for me). Now, if I drag the picture in Preview to the desktop or to a named folder, they go POOF!
I have tried every keystroke imaginable to drag and drop these pictures, but to no avail. I am sure it is some simple process, so would someone please help this simple-minded person!
    TIA

    Hello,
Perhaps you could use Automator, (in your Applications folder) to create a workflow. Here's some tips: http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/access-extra-preview-features-through-au tomator.html
Launch Automator then from the Menu click Help. Tons of information there to help you.
With Automator open, in the Library column on the left click: Example Workflows From there you can view the tutorials.

  • HT2506 Questions about Preview Using in Safari after Installing Adobe Reader

I wonder how could I reuse Preview to open PDFs on Safari, after I installed the **** stupid Adobe Reader. Now I can't read and download online PDFs just because I got the Adobe Reader, even if I uninstalled the Adobe reader. What should I do?!!!!

I've been having this same problem with saving pdf files File - Save As from the top Toolbar on my laptop.
I would constantly get messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.
I also downloaded the lateset version of Adobe Reader XI
But at last I have managed to find a simple way to access pdf files from the internet.
Firstly, without downloading the pdf, I printed the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.
Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.
I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar.

  • Small silly question about previews...

In the preview size selection in the preferences, why do 1680 and 1280 have a "*" next to them?
I'm still trying to figure out what I want, I'm thinking 1680 quality 8 would suit me better than the full res quality 5.

On my machine (a MacBook Pro), 1440 has the asterisk by it. That also turns out to be the resolution of my screen.
So, * seems to indicate the sizes of the screens you have attached, and would be good choices for previews, as (the larger of the two) won't need to be scaled up to be displayed.

  • A Question about RAW and Previews

I have just recently starting shooting in RAW (mostly for the post production editing abilities - I am an avid amateur photographer bent on learning as much as I can). I set my camera to capture in RAW + L. I don't know why I feel like I want it to capture both the RAW and JPEG file, and thus leads me to my first question: Is it necessary to have the camera capture both the RAW and Large JPEG? I am assuming the answer to be no, as I am sure if after importing the RAW file into Aperture, you could always export a JPEG if you wanted one? So no need to fill up your internal memory (if using managed masters) with the extra JPEG? Is this thinking correct?
Next, if you do import RAW-only files and then want to export certain images, do you have a choice to export the original RAW image? It seems that it only allows you to export a JPEG Original Size. To answer my own question, perhaps you have to export the Master in order to export the full RAW file when exporting? If you want to export a JPEG, you have to export not the Master, but a version of the Master? Is this correct?
Lastly, I wanted to ask a question about Previews. I have my preferences set so that previews have the highest quality with no limits to size. What is the significance of setting it this way? I just assumed that if I wanted to share an image at the highest quality without exporting it, this was the way to go. Is there any validity to this? The reason I ask is that I don't want to have all of these high quality previews taking up internal disk space if I really don't need to. Is there a way to change the preview size once previews are created? Meaning, if you have it set to generate low quality previews, can you change it dynamically to high and vice versa?
I know this is a lot in one post. Thanks for tackling it.
    Mac

You can change the quality of the Previews in the Preferences -> Previews tab.
You can regenerate Previews with the Delete and Update Previews under the Images menu.

  • Question about image slideshow (like mac file preview)

Hello!Ι have a question about Adobe Edge.is it possible to create a photo slide show like mac's file preview? i mean smthg like this  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q727LqDIZKM

    Hi, TasisGrafix2-
Edge Animate doesn't support css3d natively, but you can use a third party library such as edgehero.js to make this work.

  • Question about Aperture slide shows

Question about Aperture slide shows. How can I eliminate banding in a blue sky when photos are displayed in Aperture Slide shows?

What kind of banding? Do you have a screenshot?
It could be jpg compression related, I think the previews are all jpgs.

  • Questions on preview quality and where Aperture uses them

I have been reading Apple's Aperture articles about preview quality and how Aperture shares images with the outside world. I had always assumed that the full quality image in Aperture was used for printing, exporting and sharing, but it seems that, at least for sharing, it is the preview that Aperture creates that is shared.
I have just increased the quality of the previews that Aperture generates from 5 to 9 and forced Aperture to re-render all previews. It seems to me that the images on screen and in slide shows and other iLife documents, are now much clearer and brighter (the downside of this is that my Aperture library file has grown by 4 gigabytes).
This leads me to ask four questions about Aperture and preview use (if I may?).
Is a jpeg on a high setting (9) visibly better than one on a medium setting (5), or am I being led to see what I expect to see?
Apart from editing, slideshows and iLife and iWork documents, in what situations does Aperture use previews where high or low quality might make a difference?
Does Aperture use previews to compile photo books? If so, does the quality of the preview affect the quality of the final printed book?
Is it possible to set Aperture to produce high quality previews for images above a certain star rating and low quality previews for the rest?
Thanks for any answers you may have.
    Alasdair

Previews are used within Aperture to quickly show an image in the main viewer before the master has been fully loaded, they are also used to see the referenced masters even if the external location is not available at that moment (not adjustments can be done then, but at least you can see the image)
Previews are used outside Aperture to share the images with adjustments without exporting every image. It comes in handy that you can drag an image from Aperture's browser to another app or the desktop (what you get there is the preview). iMovie or other iApps use previews, the bigger size and quality the better quality you'll get.
Once you set up the size and quality of the previews in Aperture's Preferences the previews are created with those settings. I guess you could lower the settings, in the browser select the images you don't need big previews, ctrl+click and 'update preview' to force create low res previews for those. After that you can put the settings back. But if you do any change to those images the previews will be updated. Certainly I don't see the point of having different previews, do some test find the settings that work best for you and keep it like that.
Turn automatic previews off and create manually the previews you need, I have a smart album with images rated 3 or more stars and I use it to select and create previews manually to those images.

  • Several Questions about Aperture Problems

Having used Aperture for some time, and being a Mac user since 1985, I have a list of questions about Aperture that I need help with.
    1. Periodically operating the sliders will make an image turn black. Sometimes this is early in a session, sometimes late. Various workarounds will bring the image back, but once this starts, quitting seems the only option. Can anyone help me with why this happens and how to stop it?
    2. About 20% of the RAW files from my supported camera display the Unsupported Image Format error screen. These files operate perfectly in the manufacturers software and in other image management software that does not use the OS RAW libraries. Can someone help me with the cause of this and the solution (not a "workaround" but a way to make it stop happening).
    3. ALL of my RAW files from my supported camera, when I try to lift metadata, return the error message that there is no metadata to lift. But in fact, the metadata inspector displays metadata. How can I stop this from happening and experience normal metadata lifting?
    4. When I use the DNG format from my supported camera, a great many EXIF fields do not display, such as lens data. Can someone help me with DNG files, since these never generate the UIF error screen (cf. #2 above) as the manufacturer's RAW files do. I'm forced to use DNGs to have all my shots, but the EXIF data is not fully displayed.
    5. Today I opened Aperture and no previews would display. Aperture froze while updating thumbnails. I'd not done any non-routine edits or imported any unusual files or formats. Aperture then would not quit. Is it safe to attempt to restart Aperture?
    6. At times Aperture slows to the point of not working at all. Long pauses simply in trying to enlarge the selection circles for redeye removal, for example. What would cause Aperture to slow down without warning at any point in the workflow? How can I experience a more consistent operating speed from Aperture.
    7. How do other image management programs like Lightroom compare on these points? Is Aperture typical or should I seek a change in my workflow, improvement in my hardware, or some adjustment in my installation?
Info: MacBook Pro, 4 GB RAM (apple), 320 GB drive, 45 GB free on drive; library of 3800 images. Fewer than 12 projects.
    Thanks for your assistance.

n #3. It looks like you're absolutely right on this. I went back and checked on photos I'd edited and there was the altered metadata. +Many thanks for dispelling that concern!+ I love being a happy camper. Check that one off the list!
On 1, I've followed the black-screen issues and pretty much all we know is that a workaround exists--usually selecting the crop box restores the picture, but a lot of times it blacks out again. Having used Apple products over 25 years, all of which was in my adult professional life, I haven't seen Apple willing to just let users tolerate an irritating "workaround." I think this is something that needs fixing.
On 6--I don't understand how the rotational speed would produce erratic performance issues. I can go a month of reasonable performance, and then suddenly things bog down. Also, if that is the reason, this really ought to be part of the System Requirements, or at least, a recommendation. Maybe it is already--I should check to be sure. I confess this is one aspect I had not thought about.
Thanks so much for thinking about these. I love my Apple products and have owned almost every generation of Mac since the "Fat Mac" (512K RAM! 800Kb Floppies!) and hate to stare at the screen and think I've been given a truly poor product--not in my DNA--but these things break my heart.

  • Question about rendering, it's too slow :( please help.

i've been trying to find videos explaining how to make rendering faster. Example i make a video that's 10 seconds short just to see how the result is in windows media player, it takes like 10 minutes for it to render.
I've heard about the ''secret'' menu and i tried it too. However, it's the same result again. Does anybody know how to make previewing and rendering faster.
Even when i try and preview my work, it takes ages for it to load then be able to preview it normally.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

And for the ''my car doesn't turn up'' statement, how can i know what to specify if this is my first time i ask a question about AE and don't know what to include in my question.
Hey iverecords, here is a tip to help us help you by providing the most infos as you can in your question. Because there is never one definitive answer to a question, and because there are millions of hardware/software combinaison, we can't guess what you have, and how you're trying to achieve it.
So let's take an exemple with your rendering problem.
Let see what can affect your rendering speed:
    1) your hardware (inculding OS and network if working on network drive)
Sure, the new fancy processors are faster than yesturday ones. Obviously, running on Windows95 or Windows 7 (same applies for Mac OSX Tiger to OSX Snow Leopard) can make a difference. Same as writing files over a network, or on a usb external drive.
    2) what you are rendering (your composition)
Applying dozens of effects on a few layers don't render at the same speed than a hundred of layers without effects.
    3) your AE version and settings.
Every AE release brings new enhancement / speed, so depending on your version there might be that little hepfull setting.
So as a starter, for us to help you, we need to know these 3 key elements.
We all have started one day asking questions to get help online, so we all already made that mistake of not giving enough info. So now you know you should always give us that much of info, and then we'll be able to narrow down the problems and help you find the way to the answer.
    Cheers,
    Seb
