  • Quick question about Quicktime media keys.......

I had a question about encoding video and media keys. It seems to me that the only codec that allows you to encode it with a media key is Sorenson (Sorenson 3 I think). Why are they the only ones that are enabling that in their codecs? Is it kind of a dying technology or practice? I've experimented with Sorenson 3 and Sorenson Squeeze trials and, even though it looks ok, it simply doesn't stack up to others like Apple's H.264 or open-source x264 or even Xvid. I guess I wish there were a way to be able to use media key options with all the new H.264 codecs. Is it possible to do that, either with Xcode or AppleScript? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

QuickTime has supported 'media keys" since version 3 but you can only add them using the third party software.
You would be better served by contacting Sorenson and asking them about their support for newer codecs.

  • Another question about Quicktime 7 on 10.6.5

    Hello everyone,
I have just transferred my files from my G4 to my new Intel iMac via Target Firewire and I was surprised to see that iMovie 6.04 transferred over fine even though the new OS has the latest iLife 11. Many in this forum said that this could not be done without deleting iLife 11 and then installing iMovie 6 and then reinstalling iLife 11. Or using Terminal which I was prepared to do.
I also just transferred all my saved iMovie 6 projects (the actual movies) from my old External Hard Drive to my new External Drive. I didn't have them on my main hard drive because of the space involved. I also downloaded Quicktime 7.6.6 just in case I needed it for these older movies.
I opened up an iMovie 6 movie and it worked fine but I noticed that it now uses Quicktime X instead of QT 7.6 when you convert the movie to QT. Also when you" get info" in the "show package contents" you see QT X. My question is that is this the same experience others have seen and that the new QT X is now normally used even for older iMovie 6 movies?
    Thanks for your help. Rich

    First question:
When you double click (Open via the Finder) QuickTime X will attempt to open the file. If it can't (file type, file extension or codec issue) it will ask you to install QuickTime Player (if not already installed) or prompt you to open the file using QuickTime Player.
    Second question:
Only QuickTime Player can be upgraded to "Pro". QuickTime X has a much more limited file export option.
QTVR can't be opened by X. QuickTime Player Pro can export using many more options (filters). It can also add annotations (meta data). Many "older" supported QuickTime formats and codecs are not supported in X.
Use both versions for the best experience.

  • Codec question about Quicktime

    Greetings All,
I've been rumaging through the help files here at Adobe as well as the internet in general and haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for so I'm hoping someone here can help.
Before I get in to the questions, a little background on what I'm doing...forgive me if I get a bit long winded here as I try to explain.  In the smallest nutshell possible, basically I've been creating some short videos, both from Maya animations I've created (I'm a college art student among other things) as well as some pretty basic home videos taken with various camcorders (2 digital one older Video 8 converted to digital).  Until recently I've been using Premeire CS3 for creating my videos and I have been exporting to the Quicktime format with the Sorenson 3 codec.  As I'm using my little video files for multiple uses (computer playback and DVD authoring, etc) and as I'm doing this on both PC's and Mac's (I use PC's at home but have to use Mac's at school), the Sorenson 3 codec has provided the BEST quality of anything I've tried so far on both PC's and Mac's...and having the files reasonably sized has been a bonus of course. Also, I'm not doing anything "Hi Def" here...the files are basically DV standard - 720x480 (although some of them do get played back on a big projector screen in a couple of classrooms at the college...they've still looked great though).
So far, so good...except that I recently purchased a small Sony digital camcorder (a DCR-SX44 in case it matters) and it seems that Premeire CS3 will not recognise the .mpg files from the new Sony.  From what I gather, it has something to do with the audio format that Sony uses.  Either way I picked up a used copy of Premeire CS4 from a friend at school (couldn't go with cs5 because I'm still running Windows XP 64 here at home and CS5 apparently wants Windows 7). While it will load the mpgs from the Sony just fine, all of a sudden the export video I'm creating with the Quicktime/Sorenson 3 looks REALLY bad.  In fact, after playing around with this for the past couple of weeks, I can't really find a codec, either AVI or Quicktime that produces anywhere near the same quality as the Sorenson thru CS3 (including the H.264).  It's also worth noting that where this problem is -really- evident is with text, intros and credits and such...the text looks really awful now, although the degridation in the actual video is quite apparent as well.  Which leads me to the questions...
1.)  What the devil happened that the Sorenson 3 looks like crap in CS4?  It seems to be the EXACT same codec, so I can only assume that somehow Premeire or this Adobe Media Encorder are somehow handling the codec differently or something.
2.)  ANY suggestions as to how to fix this...either with the Sorenson 3 or another codec?
I'm starting to think this isn't actually a codec issue as much as something with either Premeire or AME...somehow the video is getting mucked up a bit before it actually get's to the codec stage of the encoding.  If the Sorenson 3 is the same codec I've been using (and it still works great in CS3) that would seem to indicate it's not actually the codec itself but something else...either in Premeire or AME...although I'm not sure where to begin looking.
So that said, again in a nutshell...Premeire CS3 with Sorenson 3 - great video quality (with both the videos and the animation).  CS4 with virtually any codec I've tried (and I've tried -a lot-) mediocre to terrible quality.  -Why-?
I'm grateful for any suggestions that folks may have here.

I appreciate your comment...thank you.  While DVD isn't really my primary concern...mostly just being able to play the files on PC's and Macs so I can show them at school and such as well as a Youtube vid here and there (which is a different can of worms), with the CS3 you can actually see the difference in quality with the Sorenson on DVD.  I actually just burned a DVD for my father with a Maya animation I recently did and I also put an older animation on the disk as well...the older animation had been created with uncompressed AVI and the new one with the Sorenson 3 and there was actually a rather significant difference...we watched it on my Dad's 37" flat panel and the Sorenson quality was noticably much better.
BTW...I tried the Animation option for Quicktime with the CS4 after watching a Youtube tut...nadda...quality was awful (although I don't know about that with the CS3).  I had forgot to mention in the original post though...yes, the Maya animations are REALLY affected by whatever is causing this.  That's how I got turned on to the Sorenson in the first place as my Maya teacher had suggested it.  The AVI's I did for the Maya animations looked decent enough here at home (I think I had used Video 1 back then) but they really looked like crap on the Macs at school.  They were pretty simple animations and I rendered them in Maya at really outragous quality...pretty much max settings on everything using Mental Ray at 1600x1200 but the actual vid just kept coming off soft and fuzzy...lacking any sharpness, until I started using the Sorenson.
That said, after a bit more experimentation this morning, I've found that the DV NTSC setting under Microsoft AVI is actually doing a pretty decent job (with video..haven't tried any Maya stuff there yet)...on my PC at least.  Won't be able to check it on a Mac for a couple of days though (obviously I've had -a lot- of problems with AVI's on Macs).
Now...you said that you've "heard here that there was a change in par in cs4 to deal with some standards"...could you (or someone) possibly elaborate on that a little?
    Thanks

  • Quick Question about QuickTime

Unfortunately, whenever I install iTunes it comes with QuickTime-which I don't need and I don't want (it's just a waste of space). So, I tried uninstalling QuickTime but, after that, whenever I plugged in my iTouch iTunes wouldn't open; so I had to reinstall QuickTime. I found this program called QuickTime Alternative. So here's my question:
How would I go about uninstalling the regular QuickTime and then installing QuickTime Alternative? It may sound easy, but I'm sure something may not work-again-if I uninstall QuickTime. So, does anyone know if everything will still work the same if I install QuickTime Alternative, after uninstalling QuickTime?

Since no one was answering, I'm marking it as answered. I'll just re-ask the question.

  • Dumb, newbie question about Quicktime

I recently switched from PC to Mac, so I do not have much experience using Quicktime, rather than WMP. My question is this: Can I configure Quicktime to open internet videos in an external player, rather than in the web browser? The reason for the question is that the videos playing in the browser are very small, and I don't see a way of increasing the display size. Any help is appreciated.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

The Web page authors decide what size is displayed. They can also send the linked file directly to the QuickTime Player so it opens in its own window.
Users (viewers) can't adjust the size if the file is told to open via the browser plug-in.

  • Question about Quicktime pro

I bought a 30 GB ipod today, and i'm wondering if quicktime pro is required to play movies on my ipod? I'm confused wether it is required to convert current movies on your PC so they are able to be played or just needed for even watching them on the ipod. I cannot put any movie type progam on my ipod, and i'm current downloading a movie from the istore, will the movie from the istore be the right format or will i need quicktime pro? Help please!

Pro is needed to make an iPod movie in Quicktime but there are freewares available to do the job. You don't need Pro to play them on an iPod. One freeware to make them is this program: Mpeg StreamClip

  • Question about Quicktime Pro/Codec on Windows

Does anyone know if Quicktime Pro for windows installs a usable H.264 codec? I'd like to be able to encode directly to the codec via a 3rd party application instead of using Quicktime for encoding. If all the encoding is within Quicktime Pro, then I'm guess this won't work?
Anyone know if this is possible?

I'm not sure what you mean by a "usable" codec. If by that you mean you want the third-party application to be able to encode to H.264, that depends entirely on the third-party app. If it can use QuickTime codecs, then the codec should be usable without needing a Pro key (which just unlocks the editing and export capabilities of QT Player; the free version of QuickTime already has all the codecs Apple provides for Windows). If the third-party app doesn't use the QT codecs, then buying a Pro key will not make it do so.

  • Question about Quicktime/Prores/FinalCutPro

    Hi there,
I'm quite a noob in this, but I searched a lot for an answer on the internet, but couldnt find any..
Now I'm going to try to explain what my problem is. Don't judge me on my weird terms or some, haha.
Well, I have those HDV files converted in Prores files so I could easily edit them..
I actually didnt do this myself, but I do have the files.
Well now, I wanted to set my FCP setting into prores compressor, but it wasnt in the list.
I tried to install the prores codec from apple.com, but I couldnt. He keeps saying "You already have a newer version of this software installed."
I guess there's my problem, that I don't have the codec? That's why it's not in the list...?
But I really don't know how to fix this.
Hopefully someone is willing to help me out!
    Thanks a lot

FCS2/FCP6 comes with the ProRes codecs and full support for them. You're not going to be able to "add" them to an older version of FCP. You didn't supply the link you used for the download, but check any "system requirements" on that page (or post the link, and we'll verify).
If you absolutely cannot upgrade your software (or Mac, if that is necessary), you will need to get those HDV tapes into a format that you can edit. I don't know if your iMac will handle native HDV editing, but that may be an option for you. (ie, connect the HDV deck to your Mac, ingest through Firewire).

  • Questions about HD (FCP 6 or FCP 7)

Hi, I'm using FCP 6 and have sequences of high resolution still images in JPEG format.
Assuming I'll be able to project my movie with a good HD projector, from an output Quicktime file, what's the best sequence setting for optimal output?
I see an Aspect Ratio of HD (1280x1080) (16:9), and another of HD (1440x1080) (16:9). Is there a preference? I understand one is 1080i60 and the other *50 but don't know which I should choose.
How does that correspond to the pixel aspect ratio? Should they match?
Is there any advantage to choosing "Square" as the pixel aspect ratio? The manual says this is for "uncompressed high definition video."
I can also set my aspect ratio to a custom setting that matches the resolution of the original still images, which is closer to 2880x2400. Is there any advantage to using this setting for higher resolution output?
Are the "HD" aspect ratios in FCP any different than setting a higher frame size with the same aspect ratio?
Bonus question: is Quicktime the best output?
Thanks for any tips you can provide. I'm about to start a pretty large project and want to make sure I have everything optimized for best output at the start.
    Scott

I get involved in this kind of project several times each year...  what I suggest is not gospel, but it works for me.
1.) Probably the most popular viewing format these days is 1080p, which is 1920x1080 pixels. Either 24 (23.976) or 30 (29.97) fps is fine. That long list of formats you're anguishing over is for video. The odd (1440x1080, etc.) frame sizes are to accommodate various videocam recording methods; they don't apply to stills.
2.) The aspect ratio for most of the better digital cameras is NOT 16:9. And virtually all of them shoot images several times larger that 1080p. This means two things to you: A: you're going to want to pre-process your photos to crop or down-res them prior creating your sequences in order to bring the frame sizes closer to 1080, which is about as large as you can easily handle. and B: you'll want to be working with a 1080p timeline in anticipation of your final output. You will either be pillar boxing or re-framing the shots to make them "fit."
3.) Most all HD is square pixel, and progressive scan is common, so this fits nicely with your photos.
4.) Fussing with the sequence settings and altering the aspect ratios are always possiblities, but if you want an easily cut / easily playable show, stick to 1080p and save hours/days of rendering.
5.) Yes, QuickTime Movie using the timeline settings is the best quality. I always output a QT clip for a "Master" and then go to Compressor for whatever is required for delivery.
    Hope this helps...

  • Question about Domain file size...

I have a dot Mac account, and my iDisk capacity is 1 Gb.
As I regularly back-up my Domain file from my G5 iMac to a FW external drive that sits on my desk, I have just noticed that the file size is now just over 1 Gb.
Can someone please explain to me why I still have almost 700Mb left on my iDisk, yet my Domain file size is over 1 Gb?? Obviously, there must be 'internal' files that aren't copied to the iDisk.
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

Wow, that's quite a discrepancy. 1gb Domain vs. 300mb site? Well suffice it to say that the Domain file contains all the information that is needed to generate your site. But it makes me curious too why you have such a large discrepancy. Do you have a lot of video on your site?
My site is only about 50-60mb and my Domain is roughly the same size. When I first started using iWeb, I used to poke around inside the Domain file quite a bit more than I do now. You can open up your Domain file by Control-clicking it and selecting "Show Package Contents." At one point early on when I was blithely dragging and dropping stuff into iWeb and publishing just for experimentation, I noticed that even after I deleted images or EVEN WHOLE PAGES, that sometimes the Domain file would still contain images and quicktime movies left over from the deleted pages. I didn't know what was going on and actually tried to delete the "old" items from the Domain file, but I ended up with a non-functional Domain file...lots of error messages saying it was missing this and that. So I started over completely with a new Domain file. I also noticed at the time that my Domain file was several megabytes larger than my site.
Since then, I have been very careful only to drag items to iWeb that will actually be used. The Domain-to-site size ratio has stayed pretty much 1:1. So I chalked up my earlier experience as a fluke. I don't know. Maybe there is an inconsistency somewhere. In fact, do a search here on "Domain file optimizing" or "Domain file bloat" and you may be able to find my questions about the issue. I never did get any responses, though.
