Question about RAM timing etc. on MSI P965 Platinum ? 4th question

Hi.
Just board new Cellshock mem. Now i want to chance the default DRAM voltage on the board from 1.90v to the
spcific ram (mem) setting. They are 4-4-4-12 2.1 to 2.2v
But the voltage settings is grayed out. How to chance it to 2.2v

Disable the thing you just said (cant remember what you called it) and set it manualy to 4-4-4-12
Then back to cell menu and set the FSB to standard 266 first. And the ram to 800 and 2.0v
Now in the CPU-Z it shows 400Mhz /  2:3  /  3-4-4-12  /  2T
Is that a good setting or ? i tought it would say 4-4-4-12 when i adjusted it to it manually.
I heard these ram could go op to around 1200Mhz ..  Damn. its true.
So could you point me in the right direction.

There is a flaw in the BIOS that when you manually set the latencies in the BIOS it does not set properly. You can change the DRAM Voltage (Vdimm) with it set to SPD by using page up / down on that field. I think DDR2 800 will show up as 400 mhz in CPU-Z. I will check later.

In this case however, they are the same price...

    Make up your mind about the number of memory sticks you want to install. On the X79 platform, do you want to use 4 slots, or do you want to fully populate all 8 slots? This is very important especially with i7-3930K / 4930K CPU's, which have a rather finicky memory controller.
    Make a shortlist of quad or octo packs of memory sticks in the size you want, limiting yourself to ONLY sticks using 1.5V or less.
    Check the motherboard manufacturer's site QVL list to see which of the sticks on your shortlist are approved. Pay attention to the number of slots for which they are approved. Some modules are approved for 4 slots only, others for fully populated use.
    Check the memory manufacturer's site QVL list to see which motherboards are approved.
    Try to establish if there are users that have been successful in using the sticks on your shortlist and delete any that were giving trouble to others. NewEgg can be a good source for that.
    Now that you have a very short shortlist, contact the Technical Support departments of both the motherboard manufacturer and the memory manufacturer and ask them to confirm or deny the compatibility of the memory modules in the quantity you need.
    If both confirm compatibility, check the physical height of the modules including heatsink in relation to the intended CPU cooler. Do they fit without modding?
    In general, only buy matched sets of memory sticks. There are too many different sticks with the same type number, that will cause grief when bought as four single sticks, but you limit the risk by only buying quad sets or octo sets for fully populated X79 platforms.
    CAS latency is no longer important, in fact, with the finicky nature of the memory controller of the Sandy Bridge-E, it can be advantageous to choose a higher CAS latency for improved compatibility. What can be important - relatively speaking, only in single digit % performance differences - is the rated speed of the memory, 1333 or 1600 or 2133 or even 2400.
    Even though the X79 platform only supports - at least officially - up to DDR3-1600, one can use XMP profiles in the BIOS to have the memory run at its rated speed of say 2133. For my new 'Monster' I followed these steps and ended up with a fully populated 8 x 8GB octo set of G.Skill RipjawsZ F3 DDR3-2133 sticks that are running without any problems at 2180 MHz.

    My main problem is permanent losing of power from mainboard when I shutdown my PC.
    I noticed that devices such as Scanner and CardReader turn off, everytime when I shutdown PC, instead of staying in Stand By.
    I think that it is not OK and that MSI P965 Platinum mainboard doesn’t work properly?! Also, I can't power on the system with keyboard or mouse, 
    even these options exist.

    please allow me to tell you what I know about PC and this power management thingy
    1. no WOL (wake on LAN), no Wake on USB, no Wake on PS2
    --> there should be no LED blink on your system while it is OFF, but your power supply still supplying 5V_stby to your board.
    2. with WOL, no Wake on USB/PS2
    --> no LED blink on your keyboard/mouse too, but your LAN port may still blink if you hooked your LAN cable up to a powered router. Again, your PSU is only supplying 5V_stby to your board and the LAN is consuming it.
    3. with WOL, with Wake on USB/PS2
    --> there may be LED on your keyboard/mouse, depending on your keyboard/mouse design. Your LAN port surely blink as condition stated in (2). Same thing, PSU only supplying 5V_stby.
    4. The "S3" suspend mode.
    --> This mode has to be exit from Windows by selecting "standby" and your BIOS must enable it to suspend to S3. The LED will behave the same as in (3), in addition that your RAM is still powered, refreshed to keep its content. If you remove your RAM stick, your system will not be wake up anymore.
    --> If you wake up the system, your system will take you directly less than a second to the Windows to the logon screen with your previous sessionis still active in the background.
    5. "S4" hibernate mode.
    ---> the LED behavior will be like (1), (2) or (3), depending on where you set your system to be.
    ---> When you wake up the system, it takes a few seconds (could be 10 seconds or more, depending on your RAM size) for your HDD to fetch in the previous RAM image back to your RAM.
    So, which behavior you are having right now?
    And now, the potential problem --. LED blink, but no wake up event support, LAN, mouse, keyboard all can't wake up the system, but they are still consuming power. Yup, this could be a HARDWARE problem, or could be solved by BIOS.

  • New comp wont start, some help plz! MSI P965 Platinum

    So I just got my computer.
    MSI P965 Platinum, P965, Socket-775
    Samsung DVD-brännare SH-S183A SATA
    XFX GeForce 8800GTS 500M 320MB GDDR3,
    Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA2
    Scythe Ninja PLUS Rev. B CPU-fläkt
    Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 2048MB CL5
    NorthQ 4775-500BULK, ATX 500W, 120mm
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz 1333Mhz
    I assembled everything very carefully, but it wont startup normally. The power is on, the HDD, DVD, geforce graphic, everthing is good to go. But nothing happens, the PCI-E graphic fan is on but there is no response on the LCD monitor. The D-bracket shows 1:red 2:green 3:red 4:red, which is "Memory detection test, The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly" Says the manual.
    Everything is brand new out of the box!
    Please help me Im lost.

    Some more questions in addition to that:
    1. Did you plug in all power connectors properly?
    ----> 24 pin (board)
    ----> 8 pin (2x (2x2) pin) +12V CPU (board)
    ----> 4 pin (molex) PCIe (board)
    ----> 6 pin +12V PCIe (video card)
    2. Can you give a little more information about your power supply, I found two different power supplies on the NorthQ Web Site that have similar modell names.
    ---> How many +12V rails does it have and what is amperage limit on each rail?
    - The NorthQ site lists a power supply called 4775-500S Giant Thunder and in a note it says: 2 * 75Watt PCI-Express line. That means only about 6A for the video card only on the 6 pin PCIe connector.  This may be too weak.  Make sure you are using the board's PCIe connector as well.
    3. If you can't boot your system it is of course impossible to have a look at the BIOS Version.  If you are unlucky, the board came with a BIOS Version prior to v1.4, which means that your CPU may not be supported with the current BIOS.

  • Memoy bug with MSI P965 Platinum?

    First, the specs:

    Creative X-Fi ExtremeMusic
    Samsung DVD-burner
    I have updated to the newest drivers, and BIOS was 1.2 when I recieved the board.
    The problem:
    MemTest gives me errors as early as 331MHz FSB, while running 1:1 divider. Which makes the RAM run at 662MHz. Since the RAM is sertified to run at 800MHz 4-4-4-12, im pretty sure that the motherboard is the problem.
    I have been able to run MemTest without errors for 1/2 hour with these settings: FSB 334, Divider 1:1, DRAM Volt. 2,2 and NB Volt 1,38.
    I think the volt is very high when you compare it to the FSB. I Have been able to run the system at 389MH FSB (3,5GHz) and max volts, but I recieved multiple errors in MemTest imediately. SuperPi runned without errors though, managed to do it in 14 secs :D
    The system rarely starts when I use dividers other than 1:1 and 2:3. At low FSB, I can run with 2:5, but the other dividers are impossible to boot with.
    The problem is obviousl related to the memory, and i don't think the RAM modules are the problem...
    BIOS settings:
    Turned of "SpeedStep"
    Turned of "On Board Audio"
    Turned of "Floppy Disk Controller"
    Currently running at:
    FSB = 334
    RAM = 667MHz (1:1)
    DRAM volt = 2,2V
    NB Volt = 1,38V
    Does anybody have a similar problem they got past or do anyone have some help to give to me?
    It would be nice to run stable at 3,2GHz or something like that. I invested in a Zalman CNPS9500AT CPU-cooler, and it keeps the CPU below 50 degrees celcius at all times; idle is about 30 degrees at 3GHz.
    The temperatures is gennerally not a problem.

    i beg to differ. the difference between DDR and DDR2 is that the bus clock on ddr2 is double than the one on ddr. so when you have ddr2-800, the memory clock is 200 MHz, but the bus clock is 400MHz. for a ddr-400 the memory clock is 200MHz and the bus clock is 200 MHz. and since it is DDR, this gets doubled. this means that with 200 MHz mem clock on DDR2, the effective speed of the memory is 800MHz, when run at 1:1. you're trying to run the memory at 1:1 with a memory clock of 300+MHz, that means that you're forcing the memory to run in excess of 1.2GHz effective speed.

  • MSI P965 Platinum (MS-7238) E7400 support

    Hello,
    I have question about compatibility MSI P965 Platinum with new Core 2 Duo E7400 (SLB9Y (R0)). On MSI page is that motherboard supports Yorkfield & Wolfdale processors but E7400 is not in CPU support list. If it is not supported, is there any chance that new bios will be released?

  • MSI P965 Platinum, system won't boot only when ICH8R is in RAID

    So I couldn't get my system to boot properly when I have the ICH8R in RAID 1 mode. 
    I have the boot drive on a single, non-raid Wester Digital 250gb Cavair HD on the ICH8R.
    Installed XP Pro SP2 with the ICH8R in IDE mode.  I installed in IDE mode beceause I was unable to install XP on my single drive when ICH8R was in RAID mode.  I installed XP in IDE mode, did all driver updates, then put the ICH8R into RAID 1 mode for my other data drives and the system will post, start to boot and get to the Windows XP boot screen then the system just restarts before the boot completes.  It does it in normal boot mode and safe mode as well.
    With the ICH8R in IDE mode everything boots/runs fine.
    The problem is, I need the 6 SATA RAID controllers on the ICH8R as I have 3 RAID1 arrays.
    I've done all the updates to windows, motherboard bios, Highpoint RocketRaid bios update, tried every mode on the ICH8R, unplugged the Highpoint Rocket Raid, left it plugged in with no drives plugged in, disabled the Jmicron controller, everything I can think of.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    I did not do the windows floppy driver install for the ICH8R when I installed XP, but I have not had to do that in the past with the ICH7 on my old motherboard so I assumed I wouldn't here as I've been told it's just if you are installing windows on a RAID.

    The problem that you are having has nothing to do with your mainboard. 
    Once you decide to install Windows XP SP2 when the ICH8R controller is in IDE mode, Windows will give you a bluescreen once you switch to RAID mode after the installation is done because it is to stupid to change to the proper driver.  Consider this as normal behaviour. 
    You have basically three possibilities:
    1. Reinstall XP with integrated SP2 and integrate the Intel ICH8R RAID drivers using a floppy disk
    The latest drivers can be found here.
    As I understand, you have already tried that.  I if you don't feel like trying this again, have a look at this:
    2. Slipstream Intel ICH8R SATA RAID drivers using NLITE or XP ISO BUILDER and try to install again with a self-made install CD that already includes the proper drivers (no floppy needed)
    Use google to find one of the tools I mentioned.  The procedure is free, perfectly legal and easy to do.  Guides for this can be found all over the internet
    3. Switching to RAID mode without having to re-install Windows XP
    If you are still using your existing installation, that was done when the controller was in IDE mode, the follwing trick may work for you.
    I posted a little guide on how to switch from IDE to AHCI mode without having to re-install XP.  Have a look at the guide.  The procedure is essentially the same for RAID.  The only difference is the content of the REG-File that you have to make.

    Use the following content for the REG file instead of the one I put up in the above thread:

  • MSI p965 Platinum with E8400

    I have purchased the E8400 cpu to use with my p965 platinum mobo. I have upgraded the bios to the latest one. I have checked that all other equipment are working properly. My problem is that when i start the computer, it shows the boot up screen but freezes there. On the bracket it shows 2 red and 2 green lights. On manual it refers to reading  primary and extended memory or something similar (i am at work now so i dont have themanual with me). I have tried changing the memory turning to my old 2x1gb 667mhz corsair ram ( my new are 2x2gb ocz 800mhz ) but no luck.
    When i put back my old cpu everything works fine. I have checked everything but no solution. the complete specs are shown below.
    MSI P965 Platinum mobo
    Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
    2x2gb OCZ 800mhz
    Thermaltake toughpower 750w sli certified
    MSI radeon 4850
    HDDS, case and dvdrw are irrevelant.....
    At MSI website it says that the E8400 is supported and thats one of the reasons i havent change my mobo. Can you please tell me if it actually works or do i have to change my mobo also.
    BTW i have tried to reset the bios but no luck again.

    The CPU Support List mentiones the E8400/C0 Stepping as supported [sSpec# is SLAPL].  However, the E0-Stepping/Revision of the E8400 does not appear and will not work on this mainboard.  From the symptoms you describe...

    I recently upgraded my computer to core 2 technology, and because
    i used programs that consume a lot of memory i bought
    4 ddr2 667 memory modules of 1024GB each Kingston Lifetime....e.t.c
    when i installed the 4 dims i sawthat windows and bios was able to see only
    the 3 modules. The 4th was on vacation... After changing at least ten times the memory modules.. ( same date, time, brand, production date, stickers, and all that)
    i still have the same problem... Anyone can help please?

  • MSI P965 Platinum networking issues

    Hi there. I'm having a really annoying issue with my dsl connection. It started 2 months ago and I didn't find a solution yet. 4 months ago I've built a new pc with vista ultimate 64bit. 2-3 weeks later on, this strange problem with my internet connection came up. Even thought I was currently connected, I couldn't access the internet at all. In the 'network & sharing centre there were 2 networks: Local Area Connection & Unidentified Network. At the begining, by disabling my connection and enabling it again the problem was resolved. But later on, having this problem again and again, disabling and enabling the connection didn't work. I also switched off the dsl modem but it didn't work either. I even unistalled/reinstalled & updated my ethernet card drivers but with no luck. So the only way to get my connection working was to format and do a fresh installation of vista. I'm suspecting the realtek ethernet. I'm still having this issue and I really can't affort of doing another format. A friend of mine has the same mobo and vista ultimate 64bit but he never had such a problem. Any suggestions?

    I think this is due to configurations of your modem and your network card.
    You can give your friend a trial with your DSL modem and see if the problem exist.

  • MSI P965 Platinum ATX2 query?

    Hi I have recently purchased the MSI MSI P965 Platinum and have a 600W Zalman atx2 PSU (zm600hp) the PSU as a 20+4 pin connecter to be compatible with the 20pin and the 24pin slots and has a warning on the +4 pin part of it not to connect with atx12V connector? or will damage my cpu/motherboard, now I am not game to turn it on until I can confirm what should be plugged in here? (Could be just the bad translation on the cable that is confusing me with the wording of the warning)
    According to MB manual it pretty much says make sure everything is connected? So is it best to have the 24pin atx2 connector, the eps12v 8pin (2x4pins supplied for this by zalman) connected for power to psu, and the pci express 4pin power connected all at same time?
    Also I am getting soon a Geforce 8800GTS 320MB soon, Am I supposed to have the 4pin power connected to the pci express connector on the Mboard and another pcie power connector hooked up to the video card at the same time? or is it only one or the other?

    For the 2x10 vs 2x12 pin ATX cable, you can safely plug in 2x10 cable to the 2x12 ATX connector on the board. Your board will function normally. The reason of having 2x12 connector (increasing 4 pins from 2x10) is to provide a feedback path of +12V, +5V, and +3.3V (and GND) from the board back to the PSU. Of course the PSU should design the PSU to take these extra 4 pins (4th pin is ground) as feedback. If not, then it's also no harm as it also increases the copper of +12V, +5V, and +3.3V rail from the PSU to the board, providing more current flow.
    No harm it is.
    For the eps12v 8pin, check the wires, they are all yellow (+12V) and black (GND). This is specifically for the CPU. If your board only has 4-pin CPU ATX12 connector, this 8-pin should also fit in (there is only 1 way to plug the cable in).
    For the 4-pin connector near the PCI express, this is optional. You may not need it. but if you have problems with USB devices drop off, your PCIe display card keep hanging or it doesn't have its own addtional power connector, then you need to plug this 1x4-pin connector in for better power.

  • [MSI P965 Platinum] troubles booting

    My config:
    MSI P965 platinum
    C2D E6400
    WD800jb pata
    Maxtor sata
    GF7900GS
    I am having difficulties booting properly from my sata drive. At the moment two drives are connected to my mainboard: sata & pata (and dvdrw by the way)
    When i turn on my pc it says: "reboot and select proper boot device". When I press enter the system directly boots normally.
    My boot sequence is: dvdrw, sata.
    When I change the sequence to boot only from sata, the problem isnt solved.
    The only way to solve the problem is to disconnect the pata drive. Then the mainboard wil boot without having to press a key...
    Does anybody have a solution?! I want to connect both drives to my mainboard but i dont want to press enter during startup!

    When you say you have to press a key during start-up, is that when it lists your P-ata devices??? It has to do that, just press the button...
    I'm currently on a S-ATA drive, and I had no trouble at all... The only problems I had, was making it recognize my DVD-drive, as I have it as master, with an P-ATA drive as slave (on the cable)... To make it see both I had to use the jumpers on the back of the drives, and set the HDD to master manually (no cable-select)...
    Have you installed Windows on that S-ATA disk?? If not, it might be saying that, because it wants a drive with Windows on it

  • [SOLVED] Basic question about x2go, freenx, etc. compatibility

    My goal is to simply enable remote desktop on my soon to be headless server. Given the number of posts here at Arch explaining the trouble with freenx and the Arch support of x2go, I'm confused there is not more talk about their compatibility. And as I've just discovered, they're not:
    "Various open source terminal server projects such as x2go also use the NX protocol; however, x2go is not compatible with other NX servers and clients." (NX Technology)
    This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. CentOS doesn't support x2go, and Arch doesn't support freenx. What's the best interoperable solution then? Either a sever app which supports x2go or a client app that supports NXX?

    That comment strikes me as perfectly reasonable. The comment is pointing out that you are trying to use the wrong tool to do the job. The tool in this case is the distro - CentOS is not intended to be used in this way (for this job). Of course, if you insist on using a spanner to hammer nails, you are free to do so. But you can't really expect your local DIY shop to help you use the spanner when the nails don't go in straight rather than suggesting you use a hammer instead.
    It is just like somebody who comes here and asks how they can stick with a known-stable set of packages while getting security updates. That's not what Arch is designed for so if you try to use it that way, you'll have a hard time. Of course, you are free to do so if you wish. But if you ask for help, you'll be pointed to another distro because that is the right answer.
    It has nothing to do with being "persnickty". The answer is the most helpful answer somebody can give you.
    Note: I'm assuming the description of CentOS, Fedora etc. is correct. I know the description of Fedora to be correct but I don't actually know anything about CentOS. But on the assumption that description is also correct, that answer is the most helpful answer somebody could give you, even if it is not the answer you wanted to hear.

  • Questions about RAM speed.

    I'm a bit confused by this, how it relates to CPU speed, FSB speed, double-pumped this, quad-pumped that. I know my RAM is working harder on account of having to up the voltage on it, but I can't work out how or why. The BIOS is about as illuminating as a cellar, the manual doubly so.
    I have a Q6600, Corsair Dominator 8500, on an MSI P7N Platinum.
    I've got the Q6600 up to three and a bit ghz, had to up some of the voltages to get it stable in Prime95. So far so good, but I don't have a clue what the RAM is actually doing. In both manual and linked modes...no difference. I see that I can set the RAM manually, in both modes, to 1066 or more (1066 is it's rated top frequency), but I'm not sure if that's real speed or a multiplier of something. At the moment it shows in the BIOS:
    FSB Clock: 1350
    Mem Clock: 800
    Adjusted DRAM Frequency: 798
    I've changed the timings from 5.5.5.18 to 4.4.4.12
    If I change the RAM to 1066 what will happen? Is that actually 4 x 1066, and it'll blow up? 2 x 1066? What is the 798? What actual 'true' RAM speed am I seeing at "800/798"? Why doesn't "Linked" automatically set the RAM speed appropriately per the OC'd CPU speed? What about this "ratio" thing, where I've read that the best is 1:1? Mine is currently at 13:11
    What I want is the RAM operating at top speed, regardless of the CPU being OC'd or stock. The required voltage increase seems to suggest it is, but the numbers say otherwise.
    Any help/advice/input would be gratefully received. I've read a whole bunch of guides but none of those I've been able to find cover this area in any detail.
    Edit: Ok, I've noticed in Everest that the Memory Bus is 398.9, which doubles-up to the 798 in the Adjusted DRAM Frequency field in the BIOS. Eg, 800mhz. So, if my RAM is rated for 1066 I could enter that into the BIOS and see my Memory Bus do 533mhz? I'm assuming that the 4.4.4.12 timings I've achieved have come out of the overhead I'm saving by running the RAM at 800mhz?
    If so, which give the greater performance benefit (in games mainly), 4.4.4.12 at 800mhz, or 5.5.5.18 at 1066mhz?

  • MSI P965 Platinum with E6700 - what ram (Mem) ?

    Hi.
    I have a P965 Platinum board with a Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU on and 2x 512MB Kingston PC2-5300 Dual channel 667 mem.
    But i can see the board support PC2-6400 Dual channel 800Mhz mem also. That would be better than the 667Mhz PC2-5300 mem, right ? maybe a stupid question, but i'm preatty new to PC.
    And if yes. witch 1GB Dual channel PC2-6400 would be good for this board together with the DC2 cpu.
