Question about random signal loss

I have the latest 802.11n AirPort Extreme Simul. Dual Band. I replaced my older Extreme with this one because it would randomly just kick me off of whatever I was doing, be it playing Xbox or using the net on my iMac or MBP. The light would stay green but I couldn't do anything on the internet. My new one is having the exact same problem and it is very frustrating. Any ideas?

Welcome to the discussions!
Ideas, yes. Solutions....not without some real work to find the cause of the wireless interference that is causing issues on your network.
Up first is the main culprit, cordless phones because most operate on the same frequencies as most wireless networks. I had issues with my wireless dropping at random times. Turns out, my neighbor....across the street...can literally knock me off my wireless network if he's in his front yard on his cordless phone. I found this out by accident as I happened to be looking out my office window when the wireless network crashed and I noticed my neighbor talking on his phone.
So, the first suggestion...if you have them there....is to turn the cordless phones and their base stations off for a few hours to see if your wireless performance improves. If it's one of the neighbors' phones causing the problems, there's unfortunately not a lot you can do about identifying the exact cause, unless you happen to be very lucky.
Next, we'll try to identify other wireless networks that may be causing issues, but check out the cordless phone angle first, just in case and post back with your findings.

  • A Few Basic Questions About Random Shut Downs (RSD)

i think my month and a half old macbook has "RSD", its a white 13 inch which i bought refurbrished, Iv got a few questions about RSD and apple serice
First, is there any way to avaoid rsd or is it soemthing you really have no influence over?
secondly, if i send it in to get serviced, how long might it take (it has to ship from new england if that means anything)?
has anyone got theres serviced recently and still had problems?
Also will the RSD get worse, should i send it in sooner rather than later (right now i can deal with it, though if it does get worse itd be a pain)
and last should i expect to lose everything on the harddrive ifg i send it in?

First, is there any way to avaoid rsd or is it

You can't avoid it. You can temporarily reduce it by:
    1. Holding down the power button at startup until it beeps.
    2. Setting your energy saver settings so it doesn't sleep.
But over time, even those strategies will fail to help.
secondly, if i send it in to get serviced, how long
might it take (it has to ship from new england if
    that means anything)?
I took mine to the Apple Store last Wednesday and it was overnighted to the repair center. It was delivered back to me the this Wednesday. So it took one week in my case. I know there are folks that sent theirs in before I did that had to wait longer, but I think that's because there was a parts shortage.
has anyone got theres serviced recently and still had
    problems?
The first time I sent mine in it worked fine for three weeks and then the RSD returned, but that was because Apple really didn't know at the time what the problem was. By the time I sent it in the second time, they had just concluded that a heatsink replacement would fix the problem. Hopefully they were right - only time will tell, since the issue generally seems to take a few weeks or more to occur.
Also will the RSD get worse, should i send it in
sooner rather than later (right now i can deal with
it, though if it does get worse itd be a pain)
It will get worse over time. If it only happens rarely, they might not be able to replicate the problem if you take it in for service right away. (The first time I took it to the Apple Store they couldn't get it to shut down. By the time I took it in the second time, it was predictable enough that I knew it would shut done right after they turned it on - then they sent it in for service.) If it happens fairly regularly (like every time you start it after its been sitting for awhile, or any time you wake it from sleep), then definitely take it in. Supposedly they really do know how to fix it now.
and last should i expect to lose everything on the
harddrive ifg i send it in?
Both times that I got mine back all of my data was intact. However, it is always good practice to do a full backup before you send it in -- just in case.

  • Question about random function

Is there a way to get 6 random numbers that not the same? I need this because I'm making a lottery from numbers 1-20. I need to make sure I don't get duplicate numbers. Will I need to make a nested loop statement? Thx for whoever answers my questions.

    Two things:
    1) That's a very bad attitude on your prof's part, I think: "use what you know". First, on general principles, he should encourage students to learn new things to solve problems. But more importantly, part of the everyday work of being a programmer (both in industry and academia) is doing research, learning how to solve a problem, and applying what you've learned. If you can't look in the API to see what it offers and try to use what it offers, then you're no good as a programmer.
    2) My guess is that he's thinking the two loops will be:
outer loop: until you have found 6 numbers, keep trying to find new random ones, which means
selecting a random number and then:
inner loop: look through the existing list of selected random numbers; if you don't find the one you
selected above add it to the end of the list; otherwise break this loop and go on to do another
iteration of the outer loop. But who knows what he's thinking of? I hate it when the assignment is "read the teacher's mind." You also get a lot of this on job interviews: the interviewer asks a question that actually has several perfectly good responses, but you have to choose the one he likes best, because in fact the interviewer (often the "technical guy" at the business who isn't talented enough to be too busy to interview) isn't as smart as he thinks he is and only knows part of the answer.
Anyway, see where the above takes you. If I told you any more it would be cheating.

  • Question about the Signal Processing Toolkit

I am using Measurement Studio with Visual C++ 6. Is it possible to use the
Signal Processing Toolkit in this environment or does LabWindowsCVI have to
be used? Would the toolkit supply a lib/dll that could be linked into a
VC++ project and called directly from the program?
    Thanks

You can use the signal processing toolkit libraries in VC++, but the libraries do depend on CVI libraries. The easiest way to create a Visual C++ project that links to the CVI libraries would be to either a.) create the project in CVI then convert it using the Measurement Studio CVI conversion wizard, or b.) create a Visual C++ project that uses the CVI libraries with teh Measurement Studio application wizard.
For more information on the conversion wizard, see the following topic in the Measurement Studio references:

  • Random Question About Randomizing

I'm sure this is going to sound like a dumb question, but here goes. I was wondering: does anyone know what logic (if any) the iPod uses when shuffling songs.
I typically hit shuffle on my iPod so I can be surprised. However, lately I'm hearing the same songs over and over. Anyone have any idea? Should I just keep hitting the next button on the wheel?

There is some adjustment of the randomising algorithm available.
Go into edit-preferences and select the play back tab. There are three sliders available. The bottom one (smart shuffle) lets you select how likely you are to hear the same track. Set it to less likely

  • 4s question about the signal built into the phone

i heard that the iphone 4s has the capability of using CDMA and GSM without having to buy a new phone? i am sure it has to be set up for it but is Verizon selling the same phone as ATT or a different model made for their service? I know the CDMA version has a tray for international communications but can i buy one at ATT and set it up on verizon?

You may be able to buy an unlokced iphone from the Apple store.
The reports I have seen, say that they will begin selling them in November.

  • MSI P45 Neo3-FR and MSI HD4850 signal loss

    My computer:
    MSI P45 Neo3-FR
    MSI HD4850
    E8400 E0
    2x2Gb DDR2 800MHz (MDT)
    Samsung F1 320Gb
    Toughpower Qfan 500W PSU
    Vista 64-bit
    The problem:
The motherboard came with BIOS version 1.0 which didn't support the E8400 E0. To fix that I had to update to version 1.3, which solved the processor issue but now the graphics card loses the signal at random while playing just about any game and after restarting the computer sometimes keeps on rebooting a couple of times. I read at the german tomshardware forum of someone with a similar problem that solved the problem by using BIOS version 1.2 but that isn't really an option for me since it doesn't support my processor. So any ideas?

Your PSU is only capable of 18A on 12V1 and 12V2, and only 16A on 12V3.  But, that doesn't mean that the rails can deliver all those amps at the same time, it's just the max.  Try to borrow a better PSU, preferably a powerful single +12V rail one, or get one as yours is not that great.
A good one to get would be the Corsair VX 550 or the TX 650 Corsair. Both are quiet and have powerful single +12V lines.
According to the ati webpage the Toughpower Qfan 500W is on the supported list for HD4850/70 though. One strange thing I just noticed is that 3dmark06 and furmark seem to run stable but gaming causes random signal losses. Of course it might also be a driver issue or something else(using catalyst 8.7 with Catalyst Control Center).
edit: Just noticed there is a new bios v1.4 available so I'll try that out and report back.
edit2: Ok, 1.4 was a disaster and wouldn't even let me reinstall Vista without bluescreens so now I'm trying out 1.2 and it seems to be working ok so far although it doesn't officially support my cpu.

  • Curious about Wifi signal reported by AirPort Utility and iPhone

I have an airport extreme (the non-gigabit version) and am running a MBP and an iPhone over the wireless, as well as some hardwired equipment. I was troubleshooting something else and clicked on the wireless clients portion of the utility and had a question about the signal the utility reported.
It shows some negative numbers for the MBP for signal (-36) and noise (-96), and a rate of 130 (it is running n-based) and the iPhone is reporting (49) signal (0) noise and (27) rate.
So can someone tell me what those numbers mean? I am wondering if I changed my setup I could get the iPhone's speed improved, or if that is as good as it's goign to get.

I'm not sure why different utilities report signal & noise values differently, but typically they are reported as negative numbers.
To make some sense out of this, you need to understand that what is really important is the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and how these numbers are used to calculate it.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). In your example, a signal level of -36dBm and a noise level of -96dBm yields a SNR of 60dB, an excellent value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from your MacBook Pro, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
Any location, where the SNR is 20dB+, you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort.

  • Some random questions about integration features

    Greetings,
after working for a few weeks with Autovue's ISDK (web server) and having some sucess with its integration with our custom CMS, I have a few random questions about what can be done and what can't be done. So, instead of opening many new threads, I'll post them here together.
    1) Translation. We are localised in Russia, and its translation is incomplete. I have found a tra_en.properties file in AutoVue/bin, and a description about how to create a properties file for custom actions. But no information about how to translate to other languages - and russian translation appears to be packed within the jar of the applet. Is there a clean way to translate, or refine the current translation, so we don't get a mix of russian and english commands in the applet? Because my tries using EXTRABUNDLES have failed, as I don't want to add a bundle for extra actions, but to replace it for existing ones.
    2) Attachments in markups. Markups allow to attach other files, but since our CMS is custom, we only get the option to attach files from our local drives. We did no browse integration with the CMS, as people with different levels of permission will have different access to files there, and we considered unnecessary to provide that level of integration. We are considering to remove this action from the GUI, but before that I'd like to evaluate how hard would it be to generate an upload file action, so the attached file would be stored in the custom CMS and linked to it so the whole thing worked. My guess is "it will be hard and time consuming", so for now, we are considering to delete this feature in our integration.
    3) Is there a way to resize the Open markup dialog? We have several properties displayed, and fit well within a standard screen, but the dialog is small and you have to scroll the table to see all properties.
Thanks for any assistance with these issues

As always, thanks for the fast answer, Artash.
Yes, now I see attachments are stored inside the markup file. The problem is, when I open markup mode for the attachment, since the attachment uses some kind of default access method, my url's from the integration with the background CMS are broken completely. I believe the ideal state here would be to make some kind of inner markup for the attachment, maybe stored within the original markup file along the attached file. Or maybe it works that way, and I need to access it with the default gui action instead of my custom one. If that is the case, is there any way to tell the gui file how to differentiate a standard opened file from an attached one? If so, the issue has solution. If not... Well, then maybe something escapes me.

  • Signal loss at random was not doing this last month

I have an older iphone and i have had a&tt for a while. i havent ever had signal lost untill recently now it happens all the time without warning. I am now missing important work calls and may have to switch users. any advice would be awesome. nothing seems to have changed and it doesnt happen in the same place and also happens outside.

    Hello @Logan253
I’m sorry to hear you’ve been experiencing a loss of signal.
Which version of iPhone are you using? How long have you been experiencing the signal loss?
Have you tried resetting your network settings? Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Also, have you tried inserting your AT&T SIM card into another phone to replicate the issue?
If you’ve got no issue when using another AT&T phone, then your problem could be hardware related and the iPhone might need replacement.
Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Thank you,
    Charise

  • Periodic signal loss on DCT700 digital adapter

Our kitchen TV is connected to the FiOS ONT via a basic digital adapter (Motorola DCT700/US). On some TV channels, the sound disappears and the picture freezes for up to a few seconds at regular intervals.
The problem affects only channels 11 through 25, as far as I can tell (I didn't try every single one!). It occurs at the top of every minute, at the instant when the on-screen clock display rolls over to the next minute. Sometimes the event lasts for only a second or so, in which case the sound resumes and the picture unfreezes after the interruption. If the signal loss persists for longer, I get a gray screen with a message that "the channel is having technical difficulties" before the program resumes. Either way, it's very annoying.
If I'm watching the same channel via the SD set-top box in the living room, or via either of the CableCards in the TiVo DVR, there is no interruption of sound or picture.
The DCT700 was installed and activated by the Verizon rep as part of my FiOS installation two weeks ago. I don't recall the problem showing up when he performed his final checkup before leaving, but it's possible we chose channels outside the range mentioned above and/or weren't watching the TV during the fairly short time interval during which the problem occurs.
I tried disconnecting the power adapter from the DCT700 for about a minute, but the problem was still present after the DCT700 restarted.

I pulled the plug and re-plugged all 3 adapters and none of them show a channel number.  Very odd.  And none of the of the manuals even reference the problem to find out how to correct it.
Do you have any idea why I'm not getting channels like CNN?  Am I supposed to be getting channels like CNN?
The "trick" of unplugging should resolve the channel display issue (it only shows up for a short period in the bottom left of the TV screen immediately after changing channels).
As Matcarl said, if you are not getting all the SD channels you are subscribed to you need to contact Verizon as the boxes have apparently not been provisioned correctly.

  • Any noticable signal loss with the DVI-to-video adapter?

Hi, there. Would any of you happen to know whether there's an appreciable signal loss when converting from DVI to, say, composite video via the DVI-to-video adapter? I'd like to hook my MBP up to an HDTV (when I eventually get one), and I'm wondering if going through the adapter would produce a degraded picture for DVDs, compared to a direct digital connection from a DVD player to the TV.
Actually, I'm wondering the same thing about the audio connection. Any loss in audio quality when using an adapter to connect the MBP's mini-jack to an HDTV or receiver?
    Thanks much.

    ragamoffyn,
While there's no "signal loss," as such, there is a considerable loss in signal quality. However, you're over-thinking this...
HDTVs accept HDMI connections, and your Macbook Pro has a DVI output. The ports are dissimilar, but digital video signal is the same. In other words, you would simply use a DVI-to-HDMI cable. In fact, many HD cable boxes (mine included) still have a DVI port, not an HDMI port. There is no loss of signal or quality.
Really, the only difference between DVI and HDMI is the fact that HDMI transmits both video and digital audio. DVI doesn't do this, so you must resort to transmitting audio separately. Not a problem: use an optical digital cable, which your Macbook Pro will accept (as will most HDTVs). That said, you might be better off connecting the audio portion of your MBP's output to a home entertainment (surround sound??) receiver.
Now, I'm not sure about the "progressive scan" capabilities of the Macbook Pro and DVD Player. You'll have to research that yourself. I can tell you that normal DVDs can be "upconverted" by a progressive scan set-top DVD player, and the result looks absolutely stunning on an HDTV. It's not quite as good as full HD, but it comes pretty close. Also, many newer units are being made with HDMI ports. In other words, the DVD is upconverted, and the result is transmitted over a full HD connection. Best of all, these set-top boxes can be had for under $100.
BTW, the composite video you suggest is simply "standard definition," and not the best SD at that (S-Video is better). Component video (where there are three separate "RCA"-type connectors) is much, much better, but even that doesn't match digital (DVI or HDMI). Also, the DVI-to-HDMI cable you will need can be had at Walmart for around $30. They can also be found at places like Best Buy or CompUSA, but these retailers tend to over-charge for over-blown items (No one needs a "Monster" HDMI cable that costs over $100, and which does no more than the $30 cable from Walmart; digital is digital).

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • Few questions about iPhone 4S

    Hi,
Recently I got an iPhone 4S, it is my first new phone in a long time, before this I had an old nokia, so I just have a few questions about it.
I havve read a alot of horror stories about the 4S battery life, mine seems ok, here is what I would like to know
    1) How long should a healthy battery last?
    2) how long should it take to charge to 100% from 1 or 2%?
On my daily commute I use listen it to music and sometimes user twiiter/facebook. I also get alerted of emails when they come in. So far it has just about lasted just about two days maybe before I had to recharge. Is this about right? As stated above I am coming from an old nokia, which is very dated now but the battery lasted almost a week before I had to charge, so having to charge my phone this often is new to me. My iPhone is really great and I just don't want any problems. I have turned off all extras that I don't need.
BTW are the iPhone 4S battery issues a software or hardware issue?
    Thanks

I attempted to read your post, but in amongst all the random, unrelated waffling, I couldn't actually find exactly what your iPhone related question for this "Using iPhone" forum was.
Would you like to clarify? Concisely.
