Question about rearranging clips in the storyline

I hope I can explain my question clearly: I have a storyline with multiple connected clips. I want to add a generator under a clip so that I have a black background. In other words (and I don't know the propery terminology), I want to put a generator in and then take what is now the "main" clip and the clips connected to it and make all of them connected clips on top of the generator. But, when I try to do this by dragging the clips around, I can't do it. The main clip and the clips connected to it that I'm dragging around just end up going on the left or right side of the generator clip.
How can I do this? Is it possible? I noticed that if I delete all of the connected clips from the main clip, I can move the main clip above the generator clip and have it become a connected clip. But that presents a problem because I need all of the clips, and I've already gone to the trouble of syncing them.
I also noticed that I can take the main clip and its connected clips and turn them into a compound clip and then connect it, but that complicates the editing for me.

Well, as far as why I want a black generator, I'm using a split screen effect and I want to put some titles (text) on 1/2 or 1/3 of the screen. Maybe I don't need a generator to do that. I'm still learning all of this. I'm sure that if someone like you (someone with your experience) sat down and watched what I'm doing to achieve what I want, you'd have a million tips on how to do it better. But I guess that's stuff I'll just have to pick up as I go along.
I didn't know it was possible to put clips under the primary. That certainly helps.

A question about movie clips and the eraser

So I'm kinda new to flash and whatnot, probably not nearly as
good as half you people with the scripting and I donno what half of
things you say are.. and yeah.. but I'll learn one day. :]
Anyways.. so I want to use the eraser tool to erase a
graphic, but it doesn't seem to be able to do that. Basically I
have this picture of an eraser and when I l click the link I want
the eraser to erase the page, but the thing that actually could
erase doesn't seem to erase things unless they're made in flash.

"Graphics" is a pretty general term - it can mean anything
from vectors to bitmaps to symbol
instances. I have to assume that you are referring to
imported graphics. Please clarify.
If you are finding the eraser tool does not erase "graphics"
then you are either trying to erase a
bitmap or an instance.
If bitmap: you must break it apart or Trace Bitmap (convert
to vectors) before using the eraser
tool. More importantly, if you are trying to erase part of a

advantageous to go back to the original source file and edit
it in your graphics editor and
re-import into flash.
If it is an instance of a Graphic symbol, double click the

HELP! I can't add any clips to the storyline.

It used to work fine, dragging clips to the storyline or using Insert or Append.
Now I can't add any clips to the storyline, dragging doesn't seem to drag any clips, Append and Insert don't react.
I create a new project, and I see the storyline, but can't add anything to it.
Using FCPX 10.1.1
on MacBook Air 2012.
OSX Mavericks.

Replacing a clip with a copied clip from the storyline?

I am making a music video. The chorus repeats itself 3 times. I worked on a clip in the storyline at the first time the chorus appeared ("desired first clip") and used placeholders in the storyline for the chorus for the next 2 times. I then used Command+C to copy the desired first clip but am having trouble using the desired first clip to replace the placeholders for the subsequent placeholder clips. When I place the desired first clip over the placeholder clip it just squeezes in, keeping the placeholder clip. I guess, if necessary, I can redrag the clip used from the project folder and replace the placeholder clip and then use the attributes of the desired first clip to modify it, but that seems like a lot of trouble for simply replacing the placeholder clip with the desired first clip. Thanks in advance for your help.

Is the desired clip in the primary or connected? If the primary, copy it and paste as connected. Then use Opt-Cmd-down arrow to collapse into the primary.

Question about the sentence in bold. What is the meaning behind this comment?
How would you separate the role of the AIA and CDP from a CA subordinate server? I can see where I add a CES and CEP server which has those as well, but I don't completely understand his comment. Because in this second step, (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/tlg-key-based-renewal.aspx)
he shows how to implement CES and CEP.

for the same request. If it does, it can then send that response to the client. If there is no cached response, the OCSP Responder then checks to see if it has the CRL issued by the CA cached locally on the OCSP. If it does, it can check the revocation status
locally, and send a response to the client stating whether the certificate is valid or revoked. The response is signed by the OCSP Signing Certificate that is selected during installation. If the OCSP does not have the CRL cached locally, the OCSP Responder
can retrieve the CRL from the CDP locations listed in the certificate. The OCSP Responder then can parse the CRL to determine the revocation status, and send the appropriate response to the client.

Major question about movie clips

Ok so for this class project i have tried it all. I want to get a certain clip our of a certain movie but i cannot find a way to do this at all. What applications do i even need. I need so info about this asap please. Will imovie work or do i need another. I know final cut studio will work but thats like over 1,000.00 and i'm not looking to spend that much. All information is greatly appectiated

Do you want to export a single clip from an iMovie project? If so, place the clip in the timeline, then choose File > Share from the menu. Select Quicktime and "Full Quality" and make sure you check "Share selected clips only". Hit share and have a coffee while iMovie exports.

Ultra-noob question about creating clips

Sorry if this is answered elsewhere - I don't even know where to look.
I'm working on a simple editing project. I've sucked in (I forget the proper term) an entire DV tape of material into one big file. Now I'm trying to pick out the good shots and save them as separate clips - about 50 of them. These clips will then be converted to a different format and reassembled using some special software outside of FCE to create an interactive web video.
There seem to be about a gajillion ways of doing this. Master clips, independent clips, sub-clips. Right now I'm having a problem with clip names because of the master/associate business. I want to organize individual clips into folders (Folder A -> Clips A1, A2, A3, etc). But when I try to name a clip, ALL the names change. And no amount of setting the clip as Independent seems to affect it. Not only that, but I'm so green I still can't figure out what to highlight - the clip in the timeline or the clip in the folder or both.
Can someone point me in the right direction? I don't even know what to ask.

Welcome aboard the FCE forum.
Here is another method:
Double click the long clip in the Browser and it opens in the Viewer.
Mark an In and Out point in the Viewer. You will have two black triangles facing one-another in the Viewer scrubber bar when completed. Notice the bit in between the triangles is lighter in color than the rest. This bit can be made into a re-namable Sub-Clip.
Go to Modify> Make Subclip. Command-U (keyboard shortcut).
The modified clip now appears in the Browser ready to be re-named. Enter new name.
Do this as many times as required.
Right click in the Browser and a pop up appears with an option to create a _New Bin_.
Drag the newly named Sub Clips into a Bin of your choice.

Question about Setting Window Title/the use of AVWindowSetTitle()

Hi everyone,
I have a question about setting the title of the window in which the Acrobat viewer normally opens a PDF file. The documentation states that AVWindowSetTitle() cannot be used in this case. However, using it has worked with versions of Acrobat/Reader up until and including version 8.
Everything breaks down starting with Acrobat 9.
According to the documentation I am supposed to do the following: "To set the title of a window in which the Acrobat viewer opens a PDF file, you must replace AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() and pass the window title in tempTitle."
Unfortunately, there are 2 problems I have with this approach:
     I do need to be able to change the document title on document Save, not only on document Open
     I do not know what AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() implementation has to look like if I have to replace it using HFTReplaceEntry().
Is there a sample customized implementation of AVDocOpenFromASFileWithParams() somewhere that I could take a look at?
Is there a way to change a document Title inside Acrobat/Reader window after a Save operation?

     I am sorry. I don't know how you tested this and came to conclusion that this works correctly in Acrobat X.
     I just tested our Acrobat plug-in with a trial version of Acrobat X and this did not work.
     When we open a file in Acrobat (doing it ourselves in the plug-in by adding another specialized open) we set the window title to something different from the default file name. Then if a file gets edited and saved (File->Save), the window title gets reset to the file name. In the PDDocDidSave callback we call AVWindowSetTitle() to set it back to a more descriptive window title we need. This has worked up until and including Acrobat 8, but does not work in either version 9.0 or 10.0.
     Also, I just modified the plug-in code to always change the Window Title of every document (even if opened through native File->Open) on document Save. It does not work.
     Please help,

Rearrange clips in the timeline?

I thought the purpose of the timeline at the bottom of the iMovie window was to be able to rearrange imported clips. When I option-click a clip to select the whole thing and then try to drag it to a different spot, I see a translucent filmstrip icon where I'm dragging, but when I relaease the mouse button, it pops back to where it was and nothing happens. (BTW, I'm in the timeline mode where it wraps the clips around from one row to the next, rather than showing one long scrolling timeline). How do I do this?

As you drag the clip along the timeline over the other clips they should slide out of the way and you drop the clip when the gap appears where you want the clip to go.

Can you do a "Clip Sync" AFTER you've edited clips on the storyline?

A friend of mine edited our footage using just the camera mic sound, and now I have all those project files open on my computer. I'm doing the sound (edits, denoise, etc...) in my DAW. I can get FCPX to sync the audio and video clips, and it creates a new clip or even or whatever they're calling it.
Is there anyway to get final cut to use the new compound clips (with good sound) in place of the originals which are in the FCPX storyline?
If I can't think of an elegant solution to this, I figured I would try making copies of the original camera footage, opening them in Soundtrack Pro. Do the sync there, then export the footage and swap them out with the project files that Final Cut is using. Hopefully FC won't notice...!

Well, sneaking the altered files into the project folder using the Finder didn't work. Final Cut "knew" that the file had been changed and the clip showed up in the storyline with a yellow triangle with an exclaimation point in it. Replacing the bogus copy with a copy of the original file fixed things.
There has to be some way to marry second system sound to a clip that is already in use in the story line... How do I "convince" FCP that "Synchronized Clip:_7772310" is the same as "_7772310"? Probably something that is so simple I'm overlooking it.

Question about Removing Permissions from the System Folder with chmod

I have a question about the removal of permissions from the System folder (and sub directories and files).
Background
Since installing a new HD, clean install of 10.6, application of updates and moving over backed up user directories I have had several issues with permissions.
I have read several threads on this and using disk warrior and other tools I have been able to fix most of the issues.
The Problem
The issue that remains is a permissions check using Disk Utility keeps reporting
ACL found but not expected on "System".
followed by an extensive list of sub directories and all.
Attempts to repair take hours and the same errors are reported.
Found Solutions
I have read about changing and/or completely removing the ACL from the permissions from the System using two different commands:
sudo chmod -R -N ./System/* ( to remove all ACLs)
or
sudo chmod -R -E ./System/* ( to replace all ACLs )
My Question is ( to the UNIX gurus):
What is the difference between the usage with -E and -R and which is the best approach for a Systems directory and (subordinates)?

So I misread on the your instructions about the PW reset, did it, no harm in that. I did also select the options to reset all the permissions for all the accounts and the ACL issues were not resolved. My bad, I forgot to note that.
You do suggest getting and expert opinion but alas these are rather elusive. In most cases the Apple solutions is to do a complete reinstall... I have found that unless you completely wipe a drive and rebuild everything there are often artifacts left behind. Since I have full and redundant back-ups I would rather explore and hack a little instead of a dull old system reinstall. The irony is the system issue I had was it was the result a reinstall and combo update on a new drive. I recognize the risks of entering the realms of the System folders but I am willing to explore knowing full well that I have a path to recovery.

Question About Expanding Clips

I inadvertently condensed the bars of clips that I'm using for a project that appear in the lower right panel. How do I re-expand them?

Thanks for the quick response unfortunately it didn't do the trick. Obviously, I'm not explaining the problem well. As I am creating a finished video I'm moving imported clips into the right bottom panel. These are blocks of colored-coded clips that I can cut, expand, move as I wish. Somehow, I hit something that condensed these to much smaller blocks that I'm not able to work with. I hope I'm getting to the problem. Thanks.

A Question About Editing Clips

I have a project where I have 35 different clips approx 2 minutes each. I want to edit them down to :30 seconds each. No problem there, but how do I save them as just the 'new' :30 clip? I don't ever want to revert to the original clip.
The reason for this is I don't want each clip to be such a large 2 minute file (size wise) when I compile all my different :30 second 'movies'.
Is there a way to trim the excess footage without keeping the embedded file in tact?

well, you could use an older version of iM; with that, it was possible to "empty the trash"... but that resulted very often in BIG trouble, because the file system of iM got a hickup and the projects got corrupted....
I'm not tired to repeat:
iM has, as many software, a concept; it is meant as a basic edit app for the engineering-challanged-consumer: connect camera, some seconds off, some titles plus, little music, back to tape/burn on disc......
(have a look at that new "magic" feature...some software "decides", what is worth to look at what I have recorded last weekend.... THAT is what I call weird ;-))) )
and:
video is space consuming; I do own three hd, allmost half a terabyte, just for editing my "little son-shine drives trike" movies... ;-)) so, I really don't understand the people complaining they cannot free hd space WHILE doing a project...- the concept of this software says: do your edit, and as long you're doing that, you have access to everything, nothing gets lost... finish your project, and the disc is clean&empty again for a new project...-

your are able to preview your tape; you are not "forced" to import everything! as Bob Ross would say: now, you have to make a big decision... - import or not to import....
just to mention: all pro-apps work non-distructive too...

Rearranging clips in the timeline

Sorry, I am new a FCP.
If I have several clips in the timeline (e.g. 10 clips) and I need clip $7 & 9 to be in between clip #3 and 4 how do I move them? I want to be able to place them between clip number 3 and have everything else move forward in the timeline.

Click and start dragging a clip to it's new position with snapping turned on (it's the button in the top right of the timeline window that doesn't look like a figure 8... which also should be turned on if you're taking sync sound with it.
Before you let go though and drop it in the new position, hold down the option key and you'll see the little arrow that your cursor has become change to a curved arrow. With snapping on you'll snap to each edit point, and when this clip is between the clips you want it to be in, simply let go of the mouse button.
