Question about restoring from previous iPhone 4 backup...

Had to replace my iPhone 4 due to Prox. Sensor issues. I went to set up the new one, but it said i couldt because the software on the new iPhone was older than that on the previous, so i could only setup as "New". Now that i have it up to 4.1, can i add all the backup data from my previous iPhone? Theres a lot of texts and stuff id like to get back....photos etc...

Yes, after you update to 4.1 you should be able to restore the backup to the phone. Right click the device tab on the left side of iTunes, and select "Restore from Backup."
Do not sync or backup your new phone before doing this as the old backup will be overwritten.

  • Question about Restoring from an iTunes Backup

I just did a restore from an iTunes backup on my iPhone 5 and noticed that the restore process seemed different than before.  iTunes went through the restore process and once it appeared that it had finished restoring, I went to the home screen and all of my apps from the previous backup were missing.  Then iTunes went into the syncing process and I saw each of the apps download onto the home screen one by one. Before I thought the restore process covered all of this in one action, whereas now it seems to do the first part of the restore then the app syncing.  Is this what a normal restore from iTunes backup looks like?

The ability to load OS X Internet Recovery is provided by firmware independent of the SSD. Just make sure your MBP has the latest firmware, which was released years ago.
You won't need a separate step to install OS X. Answered more completely in (2).
Merely format the SSD Use Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and as many partitions as you desire. One is sufficient.
Only Crucial can answer that. You might be better off purchasing a SSD from a company known to support Macs, such as OWC / MacSales. I have several of their SSD products and haven't had to devote a moment of thought to Trim.
That's done by virtue of the Recovery firmware. It will recognize that no Recovery partition exists and will create one, after which you won't have to use OS X Internet Recovery (though it will remain an option).
If you obtain your SSD from OWC that's really all you need to know. Mechanically, it's not much more complicated than installing memory. As far as recovering the original HD's contents, restoring from the Time Machine backup is also straightforward. TM doesn't know and doesn't care that it's a SSD.

  • Question about restoring from Time Machine backup because of new SSD

    Hi,
I have a 15" Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.10.1 with a Toshiba hard drive inside. I want to replace the Toshiba HDD with a Crucial MX100 SSD. I use a Time Capsule to backup. After I install the SSD, I would want to restore my data to the new SSD using my Time Capsule, but I have a few questions:
    1) My Mac shipped with OS X 10.7; My Mac is running OS X 10.10.1; Should I use Internet Recovery to start the restore (even though when I start OS X Internet Recovery it will download 10.7 recovery), or should I use a USB drive to start Recovery?
    2) After booting into Recovery, do I format/partition the SSD into 1 partition, GUID partition table, Mac OS Extended Journaled, etc before restoring using Time Capsule?
    3) Do I need to use Trim? Please tell me your opinion on the OS X Yosemite and Cindori Trim Enabler controversy.
    4) How do I install Recovery HD on my new SSD?
    5) Please tell me all tips you have about this entire process.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • A question about restoring from cold backup(control file backup not clear)

    Hi,
I had another question about restoring the cold backup. My database is in noarchivelog mode and after taking a consistent cold backup, all I need to do is to restore the backup right? -Why I got this question is because: when I backup my control file to trace, I see statements like this:-----
-- Commands to re-create incarnation table
-- Below log names MUST be changed to existing filenames on
-- disk. Any one log file from each branch can be used to
    -- re-create incarnation records.
    -- ALTER DATABASE REGISTER LOGFILE '/uo1/app1/arch1_1_647102958.dbf';
-- Recovery is required if any of the datafiles are restored backups,
-- or if the last shutdown was not normal or immediate.
    RECOVER DATABASE
-- Database can now be opened normally.
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN;
My database is in noarchivelog mode now so don't know why these statements (of register the logfile) is there in the backup of control file? so when I restore the cold backup of this database, it will still work correct? (there is no logfile I have only CRD files in cold backup -no archive log files.)
    thanks

  • Question about restoring from backup

The local Apple store swapped out my iphone 4 for a new one yesterday because of issues with the headphone jack. When I restored from backup, all texts, contacts, call records, etc. moved over perfectly. However, it didn't copy my books, music or photo album (my camera roll is intact, just not my photo album). I was essentially able to recreate them, but was wondering if I should change any sync settings. Thanks.

No iTunes content on your iPhone is included with your iPhone's backup - no music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, 3rd party apps, or books, and the same for photos transferred from your computer. This data should remain on your computer so it isn't necessary to include this data with your iPhone's backup taking up double the storage space for this data on your computer's hard drive.
Your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes should be included with your iPhone's backup. After the backup for a previous iPhone is transferred to a new iPhone or after an iPhone is restored with iTunes from the iPhone's backup, this must be followed by a sync with iTunes to transfer your selections under the various tabs for your iPhone's sync preferences with iTunes back to your iPhone, which should be automatic when transferring a backup to a new iPhone and when restoring an iPhone from the iPhone's backup.

  • A question about restoring from an old Time Machine backup

My computer has been acting very slow and freezing frequently lately.  The spotlight background processess keep hogging the processor, and
It keeps getting catalog b-Tree corruption.  I've already done one complete reformat of my drive and a restore from a time machine backup hoping it would fix things, and that didn't work.
I tried a complete reinstall and used the migration assistant to move all my files and settings from my time machine back over to it.
That worked for about a week, then had b-Tree corruption that could only be fixed with disk warrior.
I was suspecting a hardware problem, but I have done thourogh tests of my Ram with memtest from single user mode, and a disk surface scan with Tech Tool Deluxe.  Everything checks out.
I am thinking there is some corrupt system file or setting that is getting reinstalled from my Time machine backup that is messing things up.
This all is a leadup to my question:
I would like to try restoring from a much older Time Machine back up (6 months ago or so before I started experiencing problems).
If I do that, can I still use Time Machine to restore individual files and directories from later backups?
I'd like my system settings and applications to be from six months ago, but my desktop files and documents to be from my most recent backup.
    Thanks,
    -Matt

Yeah, I usually check the FAQs before posting a question.
They do talk about how to restore from an older back up, but not about what happens to your newer files once you have done it.  They also talk about accessing files from another computer's time machine backup, but its not clear if that would work on a different fork of the same machine.
I may just have to learn from experience, but I don't want to risk losing any data.
I do recommend time machine though.  Its saved me several times.
If anyone else has experience with this let me know.
    Thanks,
    -Matt

  • VMWare running XP - Restore from previous XP backup.

    Hello all,
I am a "noobie" with the MAC OS, so be gentle. I am not sure this is the correct place for this post, but I shall try here 1st.
My Problem: Need to restore an XP backup from a VMWare XP installation on this IMAC to a new and larger (larger partition or virtual drive) VMWare installation of XP on this IMAC. The 1st XP installation was set to 20GB and I now need it to be at 100BG to accomodate all needed programs and files. These are not games, but necessary programs and data for my business. FYI: I tried to "Extend" the virtual drive/partition using VMWare and GParted, but these are unable to perform the task because the "drive/Partition" is a BOOT drive/partition.
I have created a VMWare installation of XP and would like to restore a backup made from another VMWare XP on this IMac to this newer installation of XP. I cannot get it to restore the backup because the XP I'm trying to "restore to" is the one I am running from. Paragon Backup will not allow me to restore to the "Boot" drive because it is in use (the restore is started from the XP system I want to restore to). Paragon has several different "backup" capabilities, including "Copy Disk" which can copy the complete "hard disk" to a new one of a different size (intended to be used when upgrading to a larger disk to gain more usable disk space).
I am wondering if anyone has had to deal with this sort of situation and how it was resolved. I think the best way would be to delete the new XP installation, create a new Virtual disk of 100GB, then use Paragon's "Copy Disk" to place all on the "new disk". I just do not know how to go about this, and I have not found any info in these forums about this situation.
Could someone assist with instructions (remember I'm a "noobie" to MAC OS), or a pointer to a more appropriate venue for this problem?
All assistance and advice is appreciated.....
    Regards...

Since VMWAre is not an Apple product, you'll probably want to contact VMWare support or post your question the VMWare forums rather than an Apple forum.

  • Question about restoring from Time Machine

Hi Everyone, first post so i'll make it a simple one.
Thankfully, i have never had to restore too much from my back up (TM) drive, Photos/maybe a movie etc... But i always keep an up to date backup, just in case.
Does anyone know whether or not when you restore an application, for example, if time machine will restore all the necessary preferences/additional information?
Also, I have a new Macbook Pro on the way. I've read up about moving my photos/music over to a new machine. But how would be a good way of moving applications? I'm not sure if i can move Aperture etc... over and keep the full licensed copy i got way back when it first came out?
Basically, will time machine be the solution i need to get my new mac, full of everything i had on my old one?
    Many thanks.
    Rich.

Be sure you have a full, complete recent back-up of your old system on Time Machine (don't exclude any files or folders). Then, with your Time Machine back-up drive attached, put in the install disk that will come with your new machine, choose your language, and on the next page choose restore from back-up, selecting your most up-to-date TM backup. That should give you the exact same machine on your new computer as your old one.

  • Question about restore from Timemachine

Today, I did a restore from Time Machine of my "Pictures" folder. I was surprised to see that it blessed and renamed the "new" Pictures folder, "Pictures (original)". Is this normally what it does ie rename a folder like this. Moreover, the folder name seems read only, and defies any attempt to rename it just "Pictures". Any insight would be welcome.
Thanks in advance and a happy upcoming New Year to all.

Well, after about 20 hrs its done "processing" and all is in order.  So I guess when you do a full restore from TimeMachine it acts like a new import.

  • Question about restoring a backup.

Question about restoring a backup. I want to restore an old back up to recover messages and photos. If I restore my iPhone with this old backup, will it delete any CURRENT text messages that I currently have on my phone? Same concern current photos on my phone. Thanks!

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem ....
My phone was giving me trouble and I had to completely wipe everything from it. I had backup on my PC , but when I connect my wiped phone back to my PC, it couldn't recognize it , so I got a question...something like "this phone is connected first time....do you want to authorize this computer...blah,blah" ,
but than I've got next question, something like "do you want to merge data or you want to overwrite your phone" and I've pressed "merge" by accident
Now....is there any way back from it? How I can get data from all apps back to my phone ?
All app's are there, but all of them are empty ! Please help!

After restoring my iphone 4 to factory settings, then restoring from a recent backup, my phone will reboot but keeps coming back to the "new setup or restore from backup screen". How can I by-pass this screen to go directly to the sync apps/music screen?

Well, it's certainly behaving as though the phone that was backed up was synced to a different iTunes library.
I'm going to throw one more thing out there... Yes, you backed it up to this computer... Was the phone previously set up to sync with this computer? Or was it syncing with a different computer and you just backed it up to this one?
You may have to end up setting it up as a new device and rebuilding the phone by manually re-syncing your data, apps, music, etc. to the phone.
Trying to keep your library on a different drive can be tricky. If iTunes starts up and the library isn't available, it may end up generating a new library ID, meaning that you could easily find yourself in exactly the position you're in now...
I'm curious why there was a need to restore your phone to begin with... It may not have any bearing on this at all, but it could.

  • HT1766 Is there any way to restore from an older backup? I need the one from about an hour ago!

Is there any way to restore from an older backup on an iPhone 4S? I need the one from about an hour ago!

If you have Time Machine and it ran after the backup you want and before the current backup you can restore it from the Time Machine backup.

  • HT1414 I'm trying to restore from an earlier backup but my iphone only shows the most recent. I'm on Windows Vista and found the backup folder. If I delete the recent files, will it force the iPhone to backup from the next older file?  Why doesn't it show

I'm trying to recover a file and the app company said to restore from an earlier backup.  My iPhone only shows the most recent backup.  I've been searching the net for answers - I found the back up file and date sorted them (over 6mb of files).  How can I get my iPhone to restore from an earlier backup?
I am on Windows Vista so I don't have Time Machine.
I have backed up the backup folder so if I mess it up, I have it in a separate place.
Can I just delete all the files with todays date in that backup folder and have it forced to the next oldest date?
Why doesn't the iPhone show a list of the least several backups.
    Info:
    iPhone 4S
    Software version  5.1.1
Backed up to computer through iTunes (not iCloud)

As you backup the iPhone in iTunes, it overwrites the last backup. Files are kept as they are changed, so that would explain how you get different dates in your backup folder. The only backups that are saved and not overwritten are the ones done just prior to a restore. You do have the option to go back in time on a Windows computer, however depending on the last time you set a restore point in Windows, it could be back further than you are willing to go.

tried defining the iPad as new - the same problem. started it in recovery mode - the same

    The definition of insanity.....
Does it ask for the old device by name?  How do you know it isn't restored?   Have you completed setup and checked on the device?
Are you using the same iTunes account and Apple ID?
On your iTunes account, Open preferences, go to devices tab
Look in the box for a backup of your old device.    Is there a backup?
If there is no backup, you have nothing to restore.
