Question about size of ints in Xcode

Hello. I have a a few quick questions about declaring and defining variables and about their size and so forth. The book I'm reading at the moment, "Learn C on the Mac", says the following in reference to the difference between declaring and defining a variable:
A variable declaration is any statement that specifies a variables name and type. The line *int myInt;* certainly does that. A variable definition is a declaration that causes memory to be allocated for the variable. Since the previous statement does cause memory to be allocated for myInt, it does qualify as a definition.
I always thought a definition of a variable was a statement that assigned a value to a variable. If a basic declaration like "int myInt;" does allocate memory for the variable and therefore is a definition, can anyone give me an example of a declaration that does not allocate memory for the variable and therefore is not a definition?
The book goes on, a page or so late, to say this:
Since myInt was declared to be of type int, and since Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints, 4 bytes of memory were reserved for myInt. Since we haven't placed a value in those 4 bytes yet, they could contain any value at all. Some compilers place a value of 0 in a newly allocated variable, but others do not. The key is not to depend on a variable being preset to some specific value. If you want a variable to contain a specific value, assign the value to the variable yourself.
First, I know that an int can be different sizes (either 4 bytes or 8 bytes, I think), but what does this depend on? I thought it depended on the compiler, but the above quote makes it sound like it depends on the IDE, Xcode. Which is it?
Second, it said that Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints. Does this mean that there is a setting that the user can change to make ints a different size (like 8 bytes), or does it mean that the creators of Xcode currently have it set to use 4-byte ints?
Third, for the part about some compilers giving a newly allocated variable a value of 0, does this apply to Xcode or any of its compilers? I assume not, but I wanted to check.
Thanks for all the help, and have a great weekend!

I always like to think of a "declaration" to be something that makes no changes to the actual code, but just provides visibility so that compilation and/or linking will succeed. The "definition" allocates space.
You can declare a function to establish it in the namespace for the compiler to find but the linker needs an actual definition somewhere to link against. With a variable, you could also declare a variable as "extern int myvar;". The actual definition "int myvar;" would be somewhere else.
According to that book, both "extern int myvar;" and "int myvar;" are declarations, but only the latter is a definition. That is a valid way to look at it. Both statements 'delcare' something to the compiler, but on the second one 'define's some actual data.

An "int" is supposed to be a processor's "native" size and the most efficient data type to use. A compiler may or may not be able to change that, depending on the target and the compiler. If a compiler supports that option and Xcode supports that compiler and that option, then Xcode can control it, via the compiler.
Second, it said that Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints. Does this mean that there is a setting that the user can change to make ints a different size (like 8 bytes), or does it mean that the creators of Xcode currently have it set to use 4-byte ints?
I think that "setting" is just not specifying any option to explicitly set the size. You can use "-m32" or "-m64" to control this, but I wouldn't recommend it. Let Xcode handle those low-level details.
Third, for the part about some compilers giving a newly allocated variable a value of 0, does this apply to Xcode or any of its compilers? I assume not, but I wanted to check.
I don't know for sure. Why would you ask? Are you thinking of including 45 lines of macro declarations 3 levels deep to initialize values based on whether or not a particular compiler/target supports automatic initialization? Xcode current supports GCC 3.3, GCC 4.0, GCC 4.2, LLVM GCC, CLang, and Intel's compiler for building PPC, i386, and x86_64 code in both debug and release, with a large number of optimization options. It doesn't matter what compiler you use or what it's behavior is - initialize your variables in C.

  • Question about size adjuster

    I have a question about the size adjuster located at the bottom right of iPhoto (the one that says "view at largest/smallest photo size" if you hover your mouse arrow over the two blue buttons). Is there a way to permanently adjust the photo once it's been resized by use of this option? I currently just highlight the entire photo and crop it, but it seems like there should be a magic button that changes the photo to the resized appearance. Does this make sense? Thanks

    You would have to do the sliding in the Edit window and when you've got it where you want select the entire window with the cursor and click on the crop button. That will crop that portion of the photo into a separate file. It can, depending on how small that area is in relation to the original image, end up as a very small image file that would not be suitable for high resolution printing. That's because you'll be cutting out only those pixels that make up that portion of the image. Printed to the same relative size as it was in the original file it will print up OK. But if you want to print it as a 4x6 or whatever, it probably will appear pixelated.

    Prescott is for the i686 version, Nocona is for x86_64.
    Note that this is, I'm pretty sure, independent of what architecture your OS is running (32-bit vs 64-bit).
    Yeah.  What I meant was that if you're running i686 on your Core2Duo it's a Prescott.  If you're running x86_64, it's a Nocona.

  • Question about size and quality...

    Hey guys, i just finished editing a video that's only 7 minutes long but is 1.5 Gigs, which is huge. And the quality of the video isn't that great. Im new to FCE and i'm still trying to figure out how this all works, can anyone help? Is there a way to get maximum quality while keeping the size on the down low???
    Thnx

    the quality depends on the settings you use. Quicktime conversion gives you a lot of options, like if you select movie to quicktime movie (I think) you'll get lots of options, e.g. broadband high makes a pretty small video, but still pretty high quality as well. to get even more options, you can click the options button and move around the slider for quality and adjust the framerate etc.
    It probably seems confusing, but some formats aren't just "better" than others, it all depends on what your going to use the clips for.

  • Important conceptual question about Application Module, Maximum Pool Size

    Hello everyone,
    We have a critical question about the Application Module default settings (taking the DB connections from a DataSource)
    I know that on the Web it is generally suggested that each request must end with either a commit or rollback when executing PL/SQL blocks "directly" on the DB without the framework BC/ViewObject/Entity service intervention.
    Now, for some reasons, we started to develop our applications with thinking that each Web Session would reference exactly one DB session (opened by any instance taken from the AM pool) for the whole duration of the session, so that the changes made by each Web session to its DB session would never interfere with the changes made by "other" Web Sessions to "other" DB sessions .
    In other words, because of that convincement we often implemented sort of "transactions" that open and close (with either commit or rollback) each DB session not in/after a single HTTP request, but during many HTTP Requests.
    As a concrete example think of this scenario:
    1. the user presses the "Insert" button. An HTTP request is fired. The action listener is executed and ends up with inserting rows in a table via a PL SQL block (not via the ViewObjects API).
    2. no commit or rollback after the above PL/SQL block is done yet.
    3. finally the user presses a "Commit" or "Rollback" button, firing the call to the appropriate AM methos.
    Those three requests consist of what I called "transaction".
    From the documentation it's clear that there is no guarantee that the couple AM istance + DB session is the same during all the requests.
    This means that, during step 2, it's possible that another user might reference the same "pending" AM/DbSession for his needs and "steal" somehow the work done via PL/SQL after step 1. (This happens because sessions taken by the pool are always rolled back by default.)
    Now my question is:
    Suppose we set the "Maximum Pool Size" parameter to very a great number (always inferior to the maximum number of concurrent users):
    Is there any guarantee that all the requests will be isolated in that case?
    I hope the problem is clear.
    Let me know if you want more details.

    Thanks for the answers.
    If I am right, from all your answers about resource avaiability, this means that even supposing the framework is able to always give us the same AM instance back from the AM pool (by following the session-affinity criterias), there is, however, no "connection affinity" with the connections from the DataSource. This means that the "same AM instance" might take the "a new DB connection", if necessary, from the connection pool of the DataSource. If that happens, that could give us the same problems as taking "a new AM instance" (that is, not following session-affinity) from the beginning, since each time an a new connection is taken (either via a new AM instance or via the same AM instance plus a new DB connection), the corresponding DB session is rolle back by default, clearing all the pending transactions we might have performed before with direct PL/SQL calls bypassing the AM services during the life cycle of our application, so that the new HTTP request will have a clean DB session to start to work with.

  • Question about Domain file size...

    I have a dot Mac account, and my iDisk capacity is 1 Gb.
    As I regularly back-up my Domain file from my G5 iMac to a FW external drive that sits on my desk, I have just noticed that the file size is now just over 1 Gb.
    Can someone please explain to me why I still have almost 700Mb left on my iDisk, yet my Domain file size is over 1 Gb?? Obviously, there must be 'internal' files that aren't copied to the iDisk.
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

    Wow, that's quite a discrepancy. 1gb Domain vs. 300mb site? Well suffice it to say that the Domain file contains all the information that is needed to generate your site. But it makes me curious too why you have such a large discrepancy. Do you have a lot of video on your site?
    My site is only about 50-60mb and my Domain is roughly the same size. When I first started using iWeb, I used to poke around inside the Domain file quite a bit more than I do now. You can open up your Domain file by Control-clicking it and selecting "Show Package Contents." At one point early on when I was blithely dragging and dropping stuff into iWeb and publishing just for experimentation, I noticed that even after I deleted images or EVEN WHOLE PAGES, that sometimes the Domain file would still contain images and quicktime movies left over from the deleted pages. I didn't know what was going on and actually tried to delete the "old" items from the Domain file, but I ended up with a non-functional Domain file...lots of error messages saying it was missing this and that. So I started over completely with a new Domain file. I also noticed at the time that my Domain file was several megabytes larger than my site.
    Since then, I have been very careful only to drag items to iWeb that will actually be used. The Domain-to-site size ratio has stayed pretty much 1:1. So I chalked up my earlier experience as a fluke. I don't know. Maybe there is an inconsistency somewhere. In fact, do a search here on "Domain file optimizing" or "Domain file bloat" and you may be able to find my questions about the issue. I never did get any responses, though.

  • 3 questions about texture sizes

    Hi there all,
    I have 3 questions about texture sizes. First off, after
    doing a search in this forum, I found out how to find the maxium
    texture size my hardware can handle. However, this is only
    currently tells me what the texture size I should use for my
    computer. So basically, what my first question is, I wanted to know
    what would be the average texture size for PC's. Why I ask this is
    because arfter doing the command that finds my maxium texture size
    that my computer can handle, it says that I can handle up to
    2048x2048, but this doesn't help if lets say the standard hardware
    texture size is 1024x1024.
    My second question is, when you speak in maxium hardware
    texture size terms, is this for per object, per scene that is
    loaded into memory, or for the entire game?
    ... and my last question is, does hardware texture size also
    include basic shaders as well (meaning with no textures)? If not is
    there a limit on that as well?

    1. If you know what maximum texturesize the endusers
    graficcard can handle, you can build a switch to different *.w3d
    files with that are saved with different texturesizes. you can see
    how the hardware variates:
    http://nuttybar.drama.uga.edu/pipermail/dir3d-l/2005-September/009554.html
    but don't forget that the macs are limited at the moment to a
    maximum texturesize of 512x512. If the textures are bigger then the
    maximum texturesize they are scaled down to it. In your example a
    texture that is 2048x2048 would be scaled down to 1048x1048 if this
    is the maximum texturesize of the endusers machine.
    2. The maximum texturesize is per Texture. But the Textures
    are stored uncompressed in the VRAM of the graficcard. There is no
    way to check how much RAM is left and i am not sure what happens if
    you put a lot of data in it.
    3. A shader only layers textures like photoshop and renderes
    them depending on the settings of the shader. The maximum hardware
    texture size only limits the size of the texture, if you use no
    textures in the shader (setting all texturelayers to void) the
    model will be only rendered depending on the values that are given
    by "ambient", "emissive", "diffuse", "specular"
    Just want to add here that textures should be in this sizes:
    1x1, 2x2, 4x4, 8x8, 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, 256x256,
    512x512, 1024x1024, 2048x2048, 4096x4096 ...
    but can be also be combined like this:
    32x1024 or 512x256 and so on. this is just good to know.
    If textures do not fit into this grid of pixel values, the
    texture will be scaled up or down to the next size that is closest
    to it.
    if you type this code into the message window and execute
    every line, you can check the resulting texturesize.
    global pImage
    pImage=image(100, 1000, 24)
    member("world").newtexture("image", #fromimageobject, pImage)
    put member("world").texture("image").width
    -- 128
    put member("world").texture("image").height
    -- 1024
    This will happen to all textures if they enter the
    graficcard.

    I have many questions about this program, but let me ask this one first:
    In the TrueFalseQeustion class, why are there so many constructors? What is the purpose of setting some of the variables to default values?
    Thank you very much!!!

    Stop ignoring the error messages. You seem to think that an error message means you're doing the assignment wrong. It's probably a simple fix. Post the exact error messages, as well as the code that corresponds to them. The error message will tell you exactly what line the problem occurs on, so you know right where to look.Hi,

            possibleAnswers = answerChoice;
        public void printAnswerChoice ()
            System.out.println (questionText);
    } I don't understand why the assignment wants me to build a method in the MultpleChoiceQuestion class to store the potential answer choices, I can make the program display the potential answer choices by including them in the questionText as following in the QuizDriver class
    Question x;
    x = new MultipleChoiceQuestion("What is the color of the car\na.Red\nb.Green", "a. Red", 3);
    t.addQuestion(x); I don't know how to allow the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time(add one potential answer choice by calling the addAsnwerChoices() method once)
    Here are a few original sentences of my assignment which describe what I should do with the MultipleChoiceQuestion class
    Using TrueFalseQuestion as a model, develop a new MultipleChoiceQuestion class that can be used to represent a problem where the user must select one of several answer choices (e.g., "Select answer (a), (b), (c), or (d)."). This new question type should have all of the same externally-visible functionality as TrueFalseQuestion, except that it must:
    maintain a list of potential answer choices
    provide a method that allows the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time (i.e., the client should be able to call an addAnswerChoice() method to pass a new answer option to the MultipleChoiceQuestion.)
    display (as part of the question text) the list of answer choices with appropriate letters ("abcd" instead of "0123") I don't understand what these sentences mean.
    1. "Maintain a list of potential answer choices"-- this reminds me of the getPossibleAnswerChoice() method in the TrueFalseQuestion class
    public String[] getPossibleAnswerChoice ()
            String[] possibleAnswerChoice = {"true", "false"};
            return possibleAnswerChoice;
        }I wonder that if the potential answer choices I have to store in the MultipleChoiceQuestion class are only letters "a", "b", "c", "d", etc, or include the answer text coming after the letters(eg. a.Red, b.Green)
    2. "provide a method that allows the client to construct the list of answer choices one at a time". How do I achieve the functionality "one at a time"? Do I need to pass the input of the client (a potential answer choice) to the variable of the method which stores the list of potential answers?
    3. "display (as part of the question text) the list of answer choices with appropriate letters". My question here is that: When the client type in one possible answer, should I append it to the variable questionText? (So I use the questionText variable in the methods of the first and second steps)
    Thank you very much for your nice help!

  • Question for all programmers who use Xcode

    Hi,
    What style of indenting do you use?
    1)<pre>
    int myFunc(int num){
    //some code
    }</pre>
    2)<pre>
    int myFunc(int num)
    //some code
    }</pre>
    I uses style 2, but I cannot get Xcode 2.4 to properly indent nested braces. Here is an example:
    <pre>
    class Test
    public:
    Test()
    int x = 0;
    while(x < 10)
    { <font color="2200cc"><------- should be moved to the left</font></pre>
    Can anyone get that to indent properly in Xcode?

    So, for instance, the
    character sequence 'f' can be used to insert a for
    loop in your code. It's amazing how fast it is to
    write code with that feature.
    Textmate has that. Make sure you have the proper language selected at the bottom of the file window. If you have "C" selected, all you have to do is type "for", then hit the tab key and you'll get a "for" loop. And you can even tab from bit to bit to fill in the parameters you want. I've poked around with adding my own completions, too. It's a little non-obvious to me, but it might not be to someone else.
    Also, Xcode has something similar, just look at "Insert Text Macro" in the "Edit" menu. You can assign key bindings to any of those. So, for example, I bound "option"-"f" to the "for" loop. If you haven't already discovered it, there's an easy way to move from parameter to parameter, just use the "control"-"/" key combo.
    Also, just tonight, I discovered the free Completion Dictionary plugin. It's really easy to define your own text macros. One thing I found puzzling was the key binding to expand the macro. Completion Dictionary comes with a key bindings file, but I couldn't make it work, so I just added a key binding to the "Expand Macro" submenu. Works a charm.
    Finally, as to your original question, about the indenting. Did you want the "{" to line up directly below the "while"? If so, Textmate does that for me:
    <pre class="command">class Test
    public:
    Test()
    int x=0;
    while (x<10)
    // something.
    }</pre>But that's a language I never use (Java or C++?), so I'm not real sure about that.
    Finally, I should put in a word for BBEdit. It's what I actually use most of the time for work, since I work on a web site all day long and I've been using it forever. It has a slick feature where you can build various kinds of macros using Perl or other scripting languages, which is great for creating really complex (or tedious) bits of code. But it doesn't have the same kind of autocompletion as Textmate or Xcode does.

  • Question about scope!!

    Hi ~
    I have a question about scope.
    for example
    primitive character variable ("char")
    what is principle upon which it is based?
    How can scope implemented?
    Please explain at low level in detail..
    thanks

    Scopes are related to braces (and the for+catch-statements).
    Inside a function nested scopes of the same name are forbidden {int x; {int x; ... } ...}, as misunderstanding could arise.
    You may mention a name (method name, class name, var name), before its declaration, like:
    int f() {x = 3;} int x;Implementation issues address variable locations on the stack and heap management (garbage collection), and exceptions (stack unwinding).
    If you are interested in compiler construction try the javap tool, and try out the JVM, by for instance writing a compiler to JVM byte code.
    To answer your question on variable clean-up: I'm afraid while playing compiler you need to calculate var addresses/frame sizes, and calls/stack frames are a bit confusing, but the rest is easy.

  • Question about drawLine()

    hi all , i just start to learn java, i need help, this almost kill me.....
    condition:
    a click in the drawing panel indicates the starting point of the line. As the

  • Some questions about Muse

    First of all, I would like to say that I am very impressed with how well Muse works and how easy it was to create a website that satisfies me. Before I started a daily updated website I thought I would encounter many problems I will not be able to solve. I have only had a few minor issues which I would like to share with you.
    The most problems I have with a horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/dig-t-r-3-cylindrowy-silnik-nissana-o-wadze-40-kg-i-mocy-400- km.html). Marking and copying of a text is possible only on the last (top) layer of a document. The same situation is with widgets or anything connected with rollover state - it does not work. In the above example it would be perfect to use a composition/tooltip widget on the first page. Unfortunately, you cannot even move the cursor into it.
    It would be helpful to have an option of rolling a mouse to an anchor (like in here http://www.play.pl/super-smartfony/lg-nexus-5.html and here http://www.thepetedesign.com/demos/onepage_scroll_demo.html).  I mean any action of a mouse wheel would make a move to another anchor/screen. It would make navigation of my site very easy.
    Is it possible to create a widget with a function next anchor/previous anchor? Currently, in the menu every button must be connected to a different anchor for the menu to be functional.
    A question about Adobe Muse. Is it possible to create panels in different columns? It would make it easier to go through all the sophisticated program functions.
    The hits from Facebook have sometimes very long links, eg.
    (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/mclaren-p1-nowy-krol-nurburgring.html?fb_action_ids=143235557 3667782&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=288381481237582). If such a link is activated, the anchors in the menu do not work on any page. I mean the backlight of an active state, which helps the user to find out where on page they currently are. The problem also occurs when in the name of a html file polish fonts exist. And sometimes the dots does not work without any reason, mostly in the main page, sometimes in the cooperation page either (http://www.leftlane.pl/wspolpraca/). In the first case (on main page), I do not know why. I have checked if they did not drop into a state button by accident,  moved them among the layers, numbered them from scratch and it did not help. In the cooperation page, the first anchor does not work if it is in Y axle set at 0. If I move it right direction- everything is ok.
    The text frame with background fill does not change text color in overlay state (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/nowe-mini-krolestwo-silnikow-3-cylindrowych.html). I mean a source button at the beginning of every text. I would like a dark text and a light layer in a rollover, but  the text after export and moving cursor into it does not change color for some reason.
    I was not sure whether to keep everything (whole website) in one Muse file (but I may be mistaken?). I have decided to divide it into months. Everyone is in a different Muse file. If something goes wrong, I will not have any trouble with an upload of a whole site, which is going to get bigger and bigger.
    The problem is that every file has two master pages. Everything works well up to the moment when I realize how many times I have to make changes in upper menu when I need to add something there. I have already 5 files, every with 2 masters. Is there any way to solve this problem? Maybe something to do with Business Catalyst, where I could connect a menu to every subpage independently, deleting it from Muse file? Doing so I would be able to edit it everywhere from one place. It would make my work much easier, but I have no idea jendak how to do it.
    The comments Disqus do not load, especially at horizontal layouts  (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-infiniti-q50-eau-rouge-concept.html). I have exchanged some mails and screenshots with Disqus help. I have sent them a screenshot where the comments are not loaded, because they almost never load. They have replied that it works at their place even with attached screenshot. I have a hard time to discuss it, because it does not work with me and with my friends either. Maybe you could fix it? I would not like to end up with awful facebook comments ;). The problem is with Firefox on PC and Mac. Chrome, Safari and Opera work ok.
    YouTube movie level layouts do not work well with IE11 and Safari 7 (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/wypadki-drogowe--004.html). The background should roll left, but in the above mentioned browsers it jumps up. Moreover the scrolling with menu dots is not fluent on Firefox, but I guess it is due to Firefox issues? The same layout but in vertical version rolls fluently in Firefox (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/polskie-wypadki--005.html).
    Now, viewing the website on new smartphones and tablets. I know it is not a mobile/tablet layout, but I tried to make it possible to be used on mobile hardware with HD (1280) display. I mean most of all horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2015-hyundai-genesis.html), where If we want to roll left, we need to roll down. Is there a way to make it possible to move the finger the direction in which the layout goes?
    On Android phones (Nexus 4, Android 4.4.2, Chrome 32) the fade away background effect does not work, although I have spent a lot of time over it (http://www.leftlane.pl/lut14/koniec-produkcji-elektrycznego-renault-fluence-ze!.html). It is ok on PC, but on the phone it does not look good. A whole picture moves from a lower layer instead of an edge which spoils everything.
    This layout does not look good on Android (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/nowe-mini-krolestwo-silnikow-3-cylindrowych.html#a07). The background does not fill the whole width of a page. There are also problems with a photo gallery, where full screen pictures should fill more of a screen.
    Is it possible to make an option of  scroll effects/motions for a fullscreen slideshow widget thumbnails (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a06)? It would help me with designing layouts. Currently, it can go from a bottom of a page at x1 speed or emerge (like in this layout) by changing opacity. Something more will be needed, I suppose.
    Sometimes the pictures from gallery (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a06 download very slowly. The website is hosted at Business Catalyst. I cannot state when exactly it happens, most of the time it works ok.
    I really like layouts like this (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/2014-chevrolet-ss%2c-rodzinny-sedan-z-415-konnym-v8.html#a03). On the top is a description and a main text, and the picture is a filled object with a hold set at the bottom edge. That is why there is a nice effect of a filling a whole screen- nevertheless the resolution that is set. It works perfect on PC, but on Android the picture goes beyond the screen. You can do something about it?
    In horizontal layouts (http://www.leftlane.pl/sty14/dig-t-r-3-cylindrowy-silnik-nissana-o-wadze-40-kg-i-mocy-400- km.html) holding of a filling object does not work. Everything is always held to upper edge of a screen regardless the settings. Possibility of holding the picture to the bottom edge or center would make my work much easier.
    According to UE regulations we have to inform about the cookies. I do not know how to do it in Muse. I mean, when the message shows up one time and is accepted, there would be no need to show it again and again during another visit on the website. Is there any way to do it? Is there any widget for it maybe?
    The YouTube widget sometimes changes size just like that. It is so when the miniature of the movie does not load, and the widget is set to stroke (in our case 4 pixels, rounded to 1 pixel). As I remember ( in case of a load error) it extends for 8 pixels wide.
    Last but not least - we use the cheapest hosting plan in Business Catalyst. The monthly bandwidth is enough, although we have a lot of pictures and we worried about it at first. Yet we are running out of the disk storage very quickly. We have used more than a half of a 1 GB after a month. We do not want to change BC for a different one, because we like the way it is connected with Muse. But we do not want to buy the most expensive package - but only this one has more disk space. We do not need any other of these functions and it would devastate our budget. Do we have any other option?
    I’m using Adobe Muse 7.2 on OS X 10.9.1.
    and I'm sending Muse file to <[email protected]>

    Unfortunatley, there is no way to get a code view in Muse. I know quite a few people requested it in the previous forum, but not really sure where that ended up. Also, you may not want to bring the html into DW unless you only have 1 or 2 small changes 2 make. Two reasons. First, it isnt backwards compatible, so if you are planning on updating that site in Muse, you will need to make those changes in DW everytime you update. Second, by all accounts the HTML that Muse puts out is not pretty or easy to work with. Unlike you, I am code averse, but there was a lenghty discussion on the previous forum on this topic. I know they were striving to make it better with every release, just not sure where it is at this point.
    Dont think I am reading that second question right, but there was a ton of info on that old site. You may want to take a look there, people posted a ton of great unique solutions, so it worth a look.
    Here is the link to the old forums- http://support.muse.adobe.com/muse

  • Questions about Indexing and Using an Indexing POA

    Although I have only about 50 users, at least 15 of them have in excess of 100,000 messages in their accounts and the POA (version 7.0.2) is regularly slowing to a crawl. (I just know that plans for revolution are fomenting!) I have embarked on a campaign to reduce these accounts by archiving everything off to get mail accounts down to 3000 or fewer pieces. I have achieved user buy-in, but have worked on only a few users so far.
    In another closely related thread, it was suggested to me that the PO speed issues relate to broken indexes. And I suspect that given so many messages, the indexes were never getting fully rebuilt with the default QF POA settings. I am trying to fix that situation in addition to reducing mail account sizes. So, I have set up a second POA on another server and dedicated it to the indexing task. The /qfinterval is set for 1 hour, other /qf switches at default. The POA-QF does no mail delivery, but it does do nightly user upkeep.
    The POA-QF seems to be steadily working away and making progress at reducing the number of unindexed messages. However, I have questions about what I am seeing and what more I can do:
    1. Is the progress I am seeing real progress? For example I have a user with over 100,000 messages to be indexed and every time I check the logs, the count drops by about 500 messages per hourly QF cycle. I assume that if I just let it keep running, it will eventually get caught up and fixed. Not only with this user, but with all the others as well. Will my patience (and theirs) be rewarded? Are there any gotchas I need to prepare for?
    2. One user has recently had virtually all of her messages successfully moved to archive. I can see them in the Archive, and do not see them in the online account. However, now over a week later, QF still shows >130,000 items still left to index for that user. The POA-QF is making slow, steady progress reducing that number, but why is this user's QF count still so high? Does it just need more time, or is there something amiss for this user?
    3. I may want to rebuild indexes for single users from scratch. I have seen the TID 3105742 which tells how to do this: Essentially you turn off mail delivery functions, and make some other switch changes to dedicate the POA to indexing for just a single user, and then you let the POA rebuild the indexes. The implication of that scenario is that the POA is now enjoying exclusive access to the user's databases.
    If I want to use my secondary POA-QF to rebuild a user's index from scratch, does the main POA have to be offline and the user out of GWise? That is, Does the QF process require exclusive access in order to rebuild indexes from scratch?
    Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions.

    Set this switch for this indexing POA - /qflevel=999 - this will index
    everything in one run. It will take a long time, but with no qflevel switch you
    are indeed only indexing 500 messages at a time, and if the user has that much
    mail, it might never really catch up.

    This is odd, because really the index count should drop to nothing, but with the
    above switch this might get resolved as well.

    Not really - the POA is not enjoying exclusive access to the user's database,
    the indexer is just avoiding an attempt to index anything else.

    No - QF never requires exclusive access. That said, you may find that an
    extremely vigorous QF can cause slowdowns for the user.
