Question about Sound Isolation/Reduction and Heat

Hi all,
My AGP Sawtooth G4 tower is loud
-OWC 1.4 Ghz upgrade w/ fan
-8500 vid card w/ fan
-OEM fan
-Seagate Barracuda 160 GB (loud!) + two other HDs.
i haven't measured the decibel level, but it is significant.
I do some home-audio-recording, and I want to know if I build/use an enclosure to seal in the noise, will excessive heat be a problem.
thanks in advance
Sawtooth g4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.4Ghz upgrade, 896 ram

re: the amount of noise reduction...any would be great. Didnt know it (or think about it) when i bought it, but the upgrade Seagate Barracuda HD is apparently notorious for being pretty loud. then throw in the 1.4 Ghz OWC processor upgrade (has a fan instead of a heatsink on the chip). those two + the stock fan crank some noise.
the tower is in a computer desk now (cheap officemax type command center) - in the 'computer spot' behind a door. i'm tempted to just seal the box and put up soundproofing foam inside...but heat becomes a concern. i'll look into a fan, that seems like the logical(smart?) thing to do.

  • General question about sound libraries and instruments in Logic

    Hello all...
    I am possibly looking to upgrade from Logic Express 8 to Logic Pro, mostly to take advantage of the vast sound library's and software instruments. My question is to those who are familiar with the sounds, vintage instruments etc. I have a Nord Stage piano with incredible acoustic and electric piano samples...I'm thinking of selling my Nord but I don't want to lose the incredible instrument recreations...can the sounds in Logic Pro compete with the real thing for trained ears?

    I see this type of question all the time.
    It doesn't matter.
    When someone listens to your song it doesn't matter what type of instrument you use, real or not.
    If the melody isn't there, no one is going to remember your song.
    You know when you get the song right when people hum it while walking, taking the bus, etc...
    What they don't talk about is, hey, Sweetsonic used a pretty good Nord on that one song....
    Buy Logic 8 cause the massive amount of instruments you get with it will help you explore other instruments, which can lead to a creative song.
    Look at the Beatles, when George Harrison experimented with the Sitar, they got more classic songs.

  • Some questions about Unity 4.0 and IPC

    I have a couple of questions and I was looking for "real world" answers, not specific answers from the design guide.
    1.What is this bandwidth requirement between Exchange and Unity and what is it used for?
    2. What sort of issues would we experience if we placed the Unity UM Server at the Colo and placed the Exchange server at the customer premise; with a single T1 between the sites?
    3.What else is involved with a Unity UM install vs. a Unity VM install?
    4.Does the Unity UM and Exchange servers have to be running AD?
    5. Can Unity or the Exchange box be the Domain Controller? Or does it need to be a separate server?
    6. Where does a vm message get streamed from? The Unity server or the Exchange server?

    No you do not pay for FaceTime. It uses your WiFi network, so if you have access to WiFi it is free.
    There is no server required for FaceTime, it will use a direct device to device protocol.
    I can't answer the question about using phones in different countries as that will depend on if you buy a phone that is locked to a carrier.
    If you buy a phone in Germany and it is locked to a German phone network then it will most likely not work with a SIM from Turkey. You would need to buy an unlocked phone which are very expensive as they do not have any carrier subsidy applied to the price.

  • Question about using 10g/11g and APEX ...

    Hi,
    I just recently learned of Oracle's APEX and have a few questions about using it.
    Can I use APEX with express, standard, and enterprise editions of 10g and 11g?
    Are all of these free to use?

    You might want to read about APEX rather than jumping into questions that are reasonably well documented. Info at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
    Your specific questions:
    1) Apex is a package that can be installed into any properly licensed database.
    2) The price for the production license of the database varies by edition.
    The price for Express Edition is $0 for use in production. Part of the cost for that edition is 'no Oracle Support based support, no patches, data volume limitation, etc.'

  • Questions about JVC GZ HD7 and Final Cut

    i'm planning to buy a JVC GZ HD7, but i have some questions about it...
    My imac configuration is
    Imac 20" late 2006
    1 Gb Ram
    Leopard 10.5.2
    Final Cut Studio 2
    Ok
    So my questions are:
    1- When shooting the best setting for me is the 1440cbr, or 1920x1080
    is better? i would like to have progressive instead of interlaced
    moviefiles, but for what i have read the JVC HD7 only shoots interlaced...is possible to turn them into progressive after working in final cut?
    2- In Final Cut Pro what are the sequence settings and the video
    settings for a video shoot from this camera?
    I would like to know the best settings possible for me,
    regarding that i would like to edit in real time, no rendering needed,
    and to have the best image quality that this camera can offer...

    FCE is designed to work with DV/HDV files. It cannot work natively with MPEG2 files. You will need something like MPEG Streamclip to convert your files to a format that FCE understands
    Streamclip is free but you need to buy Apple's MPEG Playback Component to make it work

  • Techie Question about iWeb, outbound links, and Google Analytics

    Hi,
    I have a kind of pretty technical question about using Google Analytics (GA) with iWeb sites to measure clicks on outbound links. Here's the setup:
    1) My website's online, and GA is working properly.
    2) I don't sell stuff directly, but I do have a "Purchase" page which contains a link to a specific Amazon page.
    3) I'm pretty sure I can measure how many people go to the Purchase page using GA, but how do I measure whether visitors click on the Amazon link? It would be interesting to me to be able to gauge what the conversion rate is; that is, how many people actually proceed to purchase the product at Amazon.
    I've checked the GA instructions and there's a page about manually tracking clicks on outbound links but it requires some code inputting. I know zero about coding, but I'm pretty sure that in iWeb you can't get access to the source code to input the required code.
    Am I wrong about this? And if I am, then does anyone here know how to measure the clickthrough rate?
    Anyway, hope you can help. Thanks in advance.

    I don't know about the link tracking but you could have the link take you to a redirect page which automatically sends them to Amazon.com after a preset time, 0 seconds to whatever you'd like. You can put a counter on that redirect page, like StatCounter. StatCounter can tell you how many, from where they came, i.e country and area, repeat visits, etc.
    Tutorials #12 & #13 describe how to put a visible counter on a page but with a redirect page you wouldn't have to bother since it wouldn't be seen. You can get all of your information from your account on the StatCounter site.
    The redirect page would be a simple plain text page titled redirect.html and would look like this:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="refresh"
    content="0; Destination URL">
    <title>Redirecting or whatever you'd like to appear at the top of the browser</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    0 Is the number of seconds to wait before redirecting the visitor. If set to zero the visitor would not know they were being redirected. Replace Destination URL with the Amazon URL you want them to go to.

  • Question about suitability of iPhone and specific comparisons

    I like the Verizon network (for which I'm considering upgrading to the Omnia II) but am thinking about biting the bullet and going to AT&T for the iPhone. I use Macs at home and at work. My main uses will be phonecalls (with reliable voice dialing from my car - bluetooth stereo and earpiece), mail (Exchange server access for calendar, mail, and addressbook), internet through the cellphone network (not wifi) - browsing, SFTP, VNC, etc., watching videos, photos, and listening to music, calendar reminders (as well as periodic sound reminders for missed calls, voicemails, etc.), opening PDF and Word documents, GPS (ideally with spoken driving directions),and Skype. Given these uses, can anyone advise me if there's anything here that is a problem for the iPhone?
    thanks,
    Mike

    "VNC"
    There are pretty nice VNC clients for the platform, the best being Jaadu VNC. (See my just-published "Everything you will ever want to know about the remote desktop controllers on the iPhone" for more info if interested; it's been cross-posted to several iPhone forums. Not this one - yet - as I still don't have Level 1.)
    watching videos
    The 3G S (but not the 3G!) is far better than current for example Windows Mobile or Symbian phones in that it can play back MPEG-4 / H.264 videos without excessive power consumption. That is, if all your videos are in this format, the 3G S is the way to go.
    Nevertheless, if your videos are in DivX, XviD or - even worse - WMV, you won't be able to natively play them back - you'll need to transcode them first.
    This, unfortunately, also means WMV streaming TV stations are far harder to watch than on, say, Windows Mobile. The only AppStore app ("Streamer") supporting them is really bad and delivers dismal performance, even on the 3G S.

  • I just have questions about the AirPort Express and how it works.

    My household Wi-Fi is not the strongest in  my room and I found out about the AirPort Express and I read the overvie, but I still have some questions on how it works, how its setup and other questions as well.

    The AirPort Express will not wirelessly extend the signal from another router unless that router is also an Apple product.
    Not sure what other questions you might have, but we'll try to answer if you want to ask.

  • Just bought a Macbook Pro and have questions about sound libraries

    I just bought the lower end Macbook Pro 200 GB Mem/2GB Ram. I installed Logic Studio on it. I have about 129 GB memory left. My question is, how does anybody deal with installing Libraries. On my main desktop, I got a separate hard-drive which holds about 150 GB of sound Libraries which I pretty much use. I could not even put this on my Macbook. I would like to work on my files on my new Macbook but would have half of the sounds missing if I work on an existing file (transferring from my Desktop to my macbook) How does everybody else deal with this. A separate ext HD?
    Thanks

    Hello - It seems to me that there is a total mess on Logic Studio Installer that doesn't allow one to install the Jam Packs onto an external drive, if that's where you keep your sound libraries. Why is no one from Apple responding to this post, probably because they know what a dogs dinner the installer is. The run through on the install insists on a system disk to load all the listed software. My Ibook has no room for all the Jam Packs and other audio data, so I did a basic install of just the program packages, invested in a 250GB firewire portable for my libraries. I then tried to install the Jam Packs onto my external drive but have to go back to the main installer, which although is aware of the application install, insists upon my system drive as the disk to use even when you tell it to install media only. Incredibley bad, bad, bad error Apple. The only work around I can find is to actually install the Jam packs then move them to the external hard drive and then use the browser for access - I have no idea as of yet how this will affect other operations. And why is there not just a simple setting ( like all good programs PROTOOLS , ABLETON LIVE ) where one selects the path for the Library. Still can't believe how bad an error can get onto a finished product from Apple. Kinda totally disgusted, Is this just Garageband with some Bells & whistles? I've been editing sound for film for the last 10 years, so I know my way around, but this is just stupid. If anyone knows the answer , as this is a question as well as a rant please do respond. Maybe someone from Apple ?

  • Lots of questions about Sound Cards and DJ'ing

    Hello,
    I am thinking about purchasing a MacBook. First some background. I play in a wedding/corporate band who occasionally hires a DJ to play in between our sets. Sometime I just bring out my Ipod and plug in to avoid this cost. Most DJ's we use bring out a laptop and just plug directly into our PA. I started looking into laptops so we could cut out The DJ cost all together.
    In my research I found that Mac's seem to be the Laptop of choice for most DJ's. My question is about the sound card inside the Macs. Is it a good quality. Would I need to upgrade in order for it to sound good going through a PA system. What are the audio outputs for Macs? As I said before I sometimes just use my Ipod and that sounds pretty good but its hard to search for things etc. And which Macbook do you think I should be looking at. The Pro or the regular?
    Thank you for your help.

    . Lithium Ion batteries last at peak performance for about 3 years, or 300-500 charges, whatever comes first. They will still work after this for several years, but at reducing performance.
    2. Sorry, not sure...
    3. Again, not sure. You're taking a risk that the adapter is compatible.
    4. Only you can make that decision. Just look at this and the other players and compare the features and price.
    5. The in-built microphones are not great quality, and really only good for recording interviews and meetings, that type of thing.

  • Question about K8N Neo Platinum and sound

    I'm experiencing "gritty" sound when using the onboard sound of the MSI K8N Neo Platinum.  Does anyone know why I'm getting this, and how to fix it?  I'm using Klipsch Promedia speakers.

    I couldn't stand the Realtek AC97 audio - it sounded thin and tinny.
    I hated it.
    I tried the nVidia drivers and the Readltek drivers, it didn't help - it sucked and there's now way to fix it.
    Do your self a favour and get a Audigy 2 ZS (less than $100) and disable the $hitty AC97 audio - much better after doing that

  • Newbie question about vinyl noise reduction

    Dear folks,
    I am entirely new to Audition (trying out the Mac beta), so if this question is entirely answered by other threads, please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!
    I am transcribing all my vinyl albums (48KHz, 32 bit) as FLAC files and now I need to clean up the transcriptions. Both DeClicker and Noise Reduction (process) seem to do an excellent job at the default settings for each, but I am not sure of the best way to use them--
    First, which order is it best to use them in; DeClicker first or Noise Reduction first?
    Second, are the default settings ( threshold :30 and complexity:16 forDeClicker and 100%/40dB for Noise Reduction ) the best ones to be using in general? If not, what qualities, audible or otherwise should I be looking/listening forto help me figure out the best settings to use?
    Third, any recommendations for help files or tutorials I should read on this subject?
    Thanks for your help!

    Ctein wrote:
    If I understand you correctly, you're recommending two passes with the Noise reduction process-- one with a large FFT followed by one with a smaller FFT sample size, right? The default for the process is a 4K sample window, with windows from 0.5K to 16K available. What values would you recommend for the two passes, and what NR percentages and dB "reduce by's" would you recommend for each pass.
    Yes you understand correctly, but it's rather difficult to say how much to use in any given situation, because it depends entirely on the condition of the original recording. The basic rule is 'as little as you can to achieve an acceptable result', whatever FFT size you are using. As for sizes, the 4k is fine for the LF pass (you might want to look at adjusting the blue line to shape it so that it only attacks the bass, as well) and 16k is fine for everything else.
    In some ways it's easier to talk about what is a realistic end result to achieve, than actual reduction numbers. Realistically, you should be able to get vinyl noise floors down to around minus 60-65dB, assuming that your signals get close to 0dB peaks. But with some older records, you may well not get this far before things start to sound rather 'fake' because you've over-processed the results. Often it's better to monitor the results on a pair of headphones rather than speakers - you'll hear more low-level detail, and have a better idea of how much processing you can get away with.
    Yes, RX2 is pretty damn good - as good as you can get, in fact. But for vinyl, with care you can definitely get good results with Audition, but it takes more effort, especially with the NR. What actually makes RX2 good is that the multiple pass part of the processing is done for you by the software, and that's the major difference - other than that, the basic algorithms are quite similar. But, it costs an arm and a leg, so unless you have a massive amount to do, or somebody's paying you to do this, it's a dubious investment.
