Question about specification of two Tecra 8000

I have 2 Tecra 8000 with the following specs.:
Intel Mobile Pentium II 400MHz
14.1 LCD
256MB PC66
30GB HDD
Intel Pentium II Xeon 300MHz
13.3 LCD
128MB PC100
30GB HDD
My question is, which do you think is better of the two? If the XEON processor is better, can I swap the LCD monitors, replacing the 13.3 with the 14.1.
Thanks....

I think the PII with 400Mhz is a little bit faster as the PII 300Mhz.
But this is not a big difference.

• Few questions about RAM upgrade for Tecra M5 (PTM51E)

Hallo
I have Tecra M5 (PTM51E). My questions are:
Is it possible to put same more RAM to my notebook? (Now I have 1GB) ,
What type of RAM should I buy?
Where Can I buy it?
And can I put this RAM to my notebook by myself or it isn't so easy to do that?

Hallo
You can upgrade your Tecra up to 4 GB RAM. Compatible modules are:
PA3499U-1M25(DDR2-667 256MB Memory Kit)
PA3511U-1M51(DDR2-667 512MB Memory Kit)
PA3512U-1M1G(DDR2-667 1GB Memory Kit)
PA3513U-1M2G(DDR2-667 2GB Memory Kit)
DDR2-533 256MB (PA3389U-2M25)
DDR2-533 512MB (PA3412U-2M51)
DDR2-533 1GB (PA3411U-2M1G)
Use those part numbers and put in the Google. You will find many online shops where you can order them.
You can also visit Kingston homepage and find compatible modules for your Tecra. Use just part numbers and search for cheapest online shop.
Thats all!
About exchange there is no much philosophy. Check page 151 in Users manuals for your Tecra.
Everything is described there.

• Question about unzipping/installing two-CD kits and installation bug.

Oracle Developer Suite 10g comes as two CDs and as two download zip files. Because it's in two CDs, file conflicts are possible and in fact occur. The only conflict is with the [unzip-root]\stage\disk.label file.
I can think of several possible procedures -- (1) unzip to separate folder trees; (2) unzip first CD, install and look for instructions to unzip the second; or (3) unzip them both to the same folder tree and rename or overwrite disk.label, because they are not used. My guess is the latter. There is nothing about this in the OUI documentation or the product release notes or installation guide.
The actual install (Windows XP) fails with:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: D:\[install-root]\stage\Patches\oracle.options.ano.ssl.owm\10.1.0.4.2\1\DataFiles\install_fg.jar (The system cannot find the file specified)
This folder has a file named install_fg.1.1.jar, so there is a mismatch between the installation script and the actual filename (no assumption about which is wrong). I would think this to quickly become a known bug and a fix provided, but I cannot find any information. That's my real problem.
Also, when the install stops, OUI returns to the initial install page, but does not back out the partial install. I now have D:\DevSuiteHome_1 and _2 folders and corresponding folders on my start menu, each with only icons for the Universal Installer and UI Concepts Guide. Is there a good way to back out partial installs, or do I just need to delete what I can see?
Thanks in advance for help. Cross-posted to various relevant forums.

• .mac Family pack:: questions about editing on two computers

Hey I'm new and would love some advice.
I'm a college student with some web experience. I'm helping out my folks' business by making them a website. I'd also like to have a website of my own.
1. It would be great if I could edit their business website from my computer at college and they could update photos or info from their Mac at home. (how do I do that?)
2. Also, if I am editing their website, do I need to be logged in as their .mac account in the system preferences?
3. It seems that any website created is all in one file. How can I have two websites with separate accounts?
Thanks for your help! I'm still new to this.

• Question about specific items I'd like to get off my hard drive

My little 80 GB iMac hard drive is full, so I'm using the WhatSize application (I love this app!) to find what's taking up all the space. The following things I'm not sure about, so I was wondering if someone could tell me what to do about these:
1) Previous Systems.localized -- This is taking up almost 5 GB. Is this what was saved when I upgraded from Panther to Tiger? (I still have Tiger.) That was when Tiger first came out, so it is not likely I would need those, if that's what this is. Is it? Can I just delete this?
2) I have a 250 GB external hard drive where I store all my photos and music. However, WhatSize shows 7 GB on my iMac listed as "Volumes", and that is my iPhoto library, which is housed on an external drive. If my library is housed on the external hard drive, why does the iMac keep that space on its own hard drive? Is there a way to fix this? (I have iPhoto '08.) In WhatSize, using a Finder-like window, the 7 GB shows as "Volumes," in the next column is the name of my external hard drive, and in the next column is "iPhoto Library." This does not make sense to me. When I run WhatSize on that external hard drive itself, it shows the iPhoto Library at 38 GB, which is the size I'd expect. Please help. Thanks!

Can I just delete this?
Yes.
If my library is housed on the external hard drive, why does the iMac keep that space on its own hard drive?
If an attempt is made to access a folder on an external drive or image when it isn't available to the computer, content may be written to the Volumes folder on the startup drive.

• Question about syncing between two computers

I feel a bit silly, because I feel as though I should know this, but I'm not sure because it has never applied to me until now.
My main computer is a Vista machine, and everything is sync'd with that. However, I bought a MacBook last night (WOO-HOO!) to use as a secondary machine, and I'd like to get all of my contact and calendar info into that machine as well.
I'm envisioning the following scenario:
1. I will put at least one contact and at least one calendar event into Mac Mail and iCal in my new, empty MacBook...
2. I will connect my iPhone to sync with the MacBook and iTunes will offer me the magic "merge" option.
3. All of the information in my phone will be sync'd to my new MacBook, and I will have two computers and an iPhone all with the same info.
Are there any holes in my vision? Will this work?
Thanks,
-SB

This should work as provided.
If something goes wrong with the sync process with your MacBook and this data is lost on your iPhone, you have your Vista machine with this data to recover from.
If you aren't already doing so, be sure to create a backup of this data on your Vista machine - contact information and calendar events - which should be done when syncing any device such as an iPhone with such important information stored on your computer.

• Question about network w/two routers

I am trying to setup a network that covers both my home and detached garage home office. The garage office is approximately 100 feet away from the home. Internet access is delivered to the garage office. The cable modem is connected to a wired router with four switched ports. A cable from one of the switched ports extends through an underground conduit into the home where it attaches to the internet port of a Linksys WRT160N wireless router. I can access the internet from the garage and within the home, but I CANNOT browse from the home network to the garage network.
How can I configure the Linksys WRT160N so that I can access the internet from both locations AND browse from one network to the other?
Thanks,

• Question about sound from two clips... any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm doing multiple angles of a shot. I'm importing both video's (miniDV) to iMovie. Now, is there a way to keep the audio from one of the clips going continuously while I switch back and forth from the main clip to the second angle? This way, even if the video is a bit out of sync, no one will notice sound messing up

• Tecra 8000 Maximum Memory

This is one of those "Can I stretch my elderly laptop a bit further" questions.
I have a Tecra 8000. It has 256MB of memory in a single memory module in one of the two memory slots. There is therefore one slot free.
Can I put another memory module (probably 256MB) into the other slot to give me 512MB total ?
I have a downloaded product spec that says that 256MB is the maximum but it's dated April 2000 and it's not clear if that's some fundamental product limitation or just the maximum that Toshiba could supply in 2000. I have also encountered some PCs where these sorts of limitations were increased by later BIOS versions.
The laptop has the current BIOS (Version 9.3) installed.

Thanks for the post Juan.
You may very well be correct that 256KB is the limit. The only doubt in my mind is that this computer is already running with a single 256MB module in one slot and this size of module probably didn't exist in 2000 which is the date of the specification sheet that I'm working from.
The reason I'm chasing this outside possibility is that it would be a low cost way of extending the life of this laptop instead of buying another and so is worth a bit of effort on my part.

• Tecra 8000: Question about the Windows XP performance

My Tecra 8000 is just within the Microsoft minimum specification for running Windows XP.

I would welcom hearing from others who have experience of putting XP on this or similar spece'd laptop.

Hi Paul, i'd installed XP Professional for my user n so far so good. Her broadband is also working well too. when this laptop was using Win98, i had to install a driver every time i added some new hardware. Now with XP Pro there is no need, she even managed to install the new printer herself without help. The same goes with the memory stick etc.
i re-built the Tecra 8000 (192 MB RAM) from scratch (XP Pro only, bypassed Win98) so i dont know how well it'd cope with dual OSs. Bear in mind that it's not that "roomy". i just like it super "clean". btw, the installation was much simpler than Win98 (not much to add). One more thing, i don't know how well it'd cope if it had a virus checker on it (might slow down the machine considerably). I just installed Sygate Firewall version of 5.5.2577 (downloaded from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=sygate ) without any virus checker. it's a good Firewall n she's a sensible user (i've warned her all the things not to do etc). u might like to install that firewall (n turn off any unnecessary XP services) too BEFORE u go online.

• Tecra 8000: Question about AC adaptor

In bad englisch sorry.
The power suply of my tecra 8000 isn't working it's not the wire but the reciever? in the notebook. I have a new notebook but there are some files inside the tecra and because I don't have power I can't reach it. Does anyone nows a solution that doesn't cost me a lot of money?
greetings H

If a new charger doesn't fix this problem, another solution would be to use a Tecra 520 docking station if you can find one cheaply. This also supports the Tecra 8000 (but not Tecra 8100, 8200). This will power the laptop via connections on the underside of the unit and so avoid the broken DC socket.
Of course you wouldn't be able to use the laptop as a portable, but it would at least provide a solution to enable you to retrieve valuable data.
Another thought: If the data is important to you, you could remove the hard drive and insert it in to the caddy of another (working) Tecra 8000 laptop.

• More specific to two questions

Hi,
First of all, many thanks to Rottier, Daniel, Geoff. Your ideas are
definitely useful.
Regarding two questions I posted yesterday, I’d like to give you more
background information so that it will make questions more specific.
Now we have a lot of applications (programs) written in either C, C++,
Java codes or Forte (maybe other language like VB). Our purpose is to
integrate all the codes written for the different platforms such as
Windows NT and UNIX together seamlessly through CORBA or CORBA-IIOP
(Internet Inter-Object Request Broker Protocol). The most difficulties
I have met so far are to pass an object by its value. As you know,
CORBA specifications, version 2, don’t support the concept “pass object
by value”. But currently, some of CORBA vendors such as Forte and Iona
(OrbixWeb) do extend the concept “pass by reference” and support the
concept “pass object by value” for Java Mode not for IDL (Interface
Definition Language) Mode. If we want to integrate all codes together
without the support of “pass object by value”, the following question I
need to answer is the garbage collection in the Forte server side. In
CORBA IDL mode, I have to set all IsAnchored attributes of all objects
to TRUE. Can these objects be garbage collected? If yes, how does the
garbage collection work?
Please note that the client (C, C++, Java or other language) and the
server (Forte) are written using different languages (not limited to
Forte)! The question I posted can be much complicated if the client and
server are written in the different languages and for the different
platforms (NT and UNIX) as well as applied to the distributed and
multithreaded environment.
To be exact, if one of the multiple remote C++ clients decides not to
access the objects (not limited to service objects) in the Forte server,
how does Forte garbage collection know what the client has done
automatically and garbage collect the object? It is known that CORBA
does not support garbage collection. Is there any functionality
provided by Forte to let itself be automatically notified? As we know,
COM and DCOM do have such kind of functionality. When you integrate
DCOM with your applications, at both sides (client and server), it is
DCOM who internally poll the object references periodically. How about
CORBA and Forte? Forte has integrated IIOP as its own built-in
component and supported VisiBroker and IONA CORBA products. My guess is
because Forte has IIOP built in itself (both sides have to run ORB), so
Forte has the full control over the whole running environment, and can
monitor the references to the objects, and apply the garbage collection
to the objects automatically. Is this true? Here are the key words:
multiple, remote (distributed), different platforms and languages,
CORBA-IIOP. We should take all of these things into our consideration.
I did find that there is a big difference between IsAnchored set to TRUE
and FALSE when I tried to integrate C++ client, Forte server and Java
client, Forte server. For the C++ client, you have to set IsAnchored
attributes of all kinds of objects to TRUE. Note that In Forte, the
service objects and the ordinary objects are treated differently. The
service objects are created by Compiler or Interpreter. It is
transparent to the users. The ordinary objects are created at run time,
garbage collection can be applied to. For Java client, you can either
set IsAnchored attribute to TRUE or FALSE depending on what you want
(access the services provided by Forte server side by value or
reference). This really answers the question: IsAnchored can control
pass object by value or reference, and really matches what you guys
talked about in your e-mail. My thoughts are that IsAnchored has
nothing to do with the garbage collection, otherwise this will disable
the garbage collection at all! Because I have to set all IsAnchored
attributes to TRUE at Forte server side for my C++ client, if the
garbage collection is really based on the IsAnchored attribute, this
means that the garbage collection is totally disabled for all those
objects with their IsAnchored attributes set to TRUE! Can anyone
confirm that? Don’t forget that this issue is raised in such
complicated environment! What I want to clarify is whether Forte does
provide such a garbage collection mechanism so nice, so smart to
automatically maintain a persistent object reference table or whatever
and deal with the garbage collection issue in such complicated
environment!
Believe this can make my questions much specific and clear. I’d like to
discuss more details about it.
Thank you again for your informative ideas.

All, I am a recent convert to using a Mac so bear with me.
I have two questions about the Airport Express.
Question if I buy one in the USA, I will visiting this week on holiday, can I use it the UK with a UK adaptor/apple plug?
Can the Express be used with my current wireless network, using a Netgear DG834G V4, I have read lots in the forums about putting a $ sign in front of the WPA password?
Any help and advice gratefully received.

Yes, but at least two things to consider:
o The US version of the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) only supports radio channels 1-11 in the 802.11g radio mode. Channels 12-14, used in other countries outside the US will not be available.
o The AXn supports both the 2.4 and 5 GHz radio bands for 802.11n. The 5 GHz band is restricted in certain countries (like the UK) so operating in this mode may get you unwanted attention.
That should be okay then because the Netgear broadcasts on channels 1-11. I hadn't appreciated the 5 Ghz band, but having checked both US and UK Apple sites the techspecs both mention 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.

If your intent is to have the AXn join the Netgear as a wireless client, then yes it should work. The "$" requirement was for WEP. This shouldn't be necessary for WPA or WPA2.
I intended to use the AXn as an range extender, but you mention wireless client, is that something different?

• Two questions about SG300 DHCP server

Hi,
I have two questions about the DHCP server on the SG300:
On the Address Binding page, what does the "Declined" state mean? I have a NAS device that won't pull an address, and I think that the entry with a state of "Declined" corresponds to this device. It was previously pulling an address from a RV180, so the only difference is that it is now connected to the SG300. I worked around this by manually setting the address on the NAS device, but this won't scale if I run into a lot of other devices that can't pull an address.
I configured a static address binding for a WAP321 and found that instead of pulling the configured address that it pulled a dynamic address. I checked the Address Binding page and see that the dynamic entry that corresponds with the WAP321 has a Client Identifier rather than a MAC address. I changed the static entry for the WAP321 to use the client identifier displayed in the dynamic entry, and now the WAP321 pulls the configured static address. Is this expected behavior?
Thanks,
Bob

With the SX300/500 it is required the client identifier, it doesn't automatically insert it. If static DHCP is made on the switch and you didn't need client identifier, that is more or less fortunate behavior for you
So to answer this question, the expected behavior is to configure client identifier for static DHCP entry.
