Question about Start-Up disk?

On my MacBook Air when I try to download some photographs on it a window appears saying my start-up disk is almost full and I need to delete some files. Does anyone know where I can go/look to find my start-up disk in order to delete some of these files?

Your startup drive is the Macintosh hard drive - and in particular you'll need to look in your own account drive space (your Documents, Downloads, Pictures etc folders) and/or Applications folder.
A temporary fix is to restart your computer, this should set the temporary files back to zero and buy you a little time. You may want to download a program that shows you what files you have and where they are located. Omni Disksweeper is free and pretty good, I like DaisyDisk which happens to be on sale at the Mac App Store right now.
If you have lots of media files (video, music, and digital photos) they are the files that take up the most space. You'll probably want to purchase an external drive if you don't own one to transfer your files to. And don't forget to empty the trash once you've put things into the trash can. Putting files into the trash doesn't automatically delete them.

  • Some question about Toshiab reocvery disk for Satellite P300-133

    Hello guys ,
I got some questions about unpleasant recovery surprises :
*1)* I just made recovery DVD using Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator and it initially asked for 2 DVDs - but when the first one was done it didn`t require a second blanc DVD . Is it possible all system files of Windows Vista to be written on 1 DVD ?
*2)* Could I reinstall Windows Vista using the HDD Recovery option ( by pressing F8 ) without using recovery DVD ?
*3)* Which HDD partitions`ll be formatted ( just system C: or both C: and E: ) using HDD recovery ?
*4)* What is recovery DVD - Image of the hard drives or Vista installation files ?
Its pretty bad idea not to include OS on DVD when I have paid for it.
Thanks for all the problems to Toshiba :(

    1. I think the recovery disk creator means 2 CDs. I have a Portege M700 with Windows Vista and one DVD too. I recovered it and after this I have a clean Vista installation with all drivers and tools from Toshiba. Nothing is missing.
    2. Yes, you can reinstall Vista using the HDD Recovery option when you press F8 at startup. You dont need the recovery DVD but you should create one when your HDD get some errors or something else. If you need a new Recovery DVD, you have pay for one.
    3. The complete HDD and partitions will be formatted, so backup your data first on a DVD, external HDD, USB stick or something else.
After the reinstallation you have the factory settings.
    4. The recovery DVD is an image of the HDD about the factory settings. If you make a recovery, there are all drivers and tools already installed. Of course on the disk are the installations files of Vista, but you can only use this DVD on your Satellite P300. The disk can not be used on an other Satellite or on a PC.
When you have more questions, have a look in the user manual. There are a many in formations about the recovery. Its in chapter 3.

  • Question about Photoshop scratch disk and specific setup

    Hi Folks
Thanks for the help in advance.
I'm a novice and need help finding a solution to a new PC Build. (Windows 7 Pro 64bit with Photoshop CS6)
I only recently found out about having a scratch disk dedicated for photoshop (very novice i know ), and was wondering if a 120-128GB SSD would be enough? (Please bear in mind I can't fit large SSD raid configs to my budget, plus I live in New Zealand, so prices are higher for SSD at the moment).
I only edit single camera RAW files at a time around 25mb per file, with no large amount of layers and very rarely do large images i.e. Panorama etc.  I have searched the forums but could not find a concrete answer.
My setup was originally meant for a HTPC (I don't intend to overclock), but I will also be using it for light photography projects. Specs below:
    CPU: Intel i7 3770
Mobo: Asrock B75 Pro3-M (or Asus P8H77m Pro, depending on budget)
16gb Ram (maybe bump up to 32gb later)
120-128gb SSD for OS and apps
    120-128gb SSD scratch disk
    2 TB HDD for storage
If anyone knows, the motherboards I've listed have 3x Sata3 ports, Asrock has one Intel chip and two Asmedia controlled Sata3 ports, while Asus has 2x Intel controlled and 1x Marvell controlled Sata3 port.  If I went with the Asrock, would it be okay to connect the OS/Apps SSD to the intel controlled sata3 port and have the scratch disk and storage HDD to the Asmedia sata3 ports?
And one more novice question, when I begin to edit my images, is it best to transfer my photos from memory card to storage HDD then work from there? Or would it be quicker opening images direct from a USB 3.0 card reader / USB 3.0 external hard drive?
Thanks again everyone, really appreciate it

Just to clarify, if/when I get one 256gb SSD for my main C: drive, I can load the OS/Apps and store some data for the time being (until I get another SSD) and use the 2TB HDD for scratch disk only?
Yes, that's what I meant.  You could try putting Photoshop scratch on C: at least temporarily, and watch your free space carefully.  If you don't work on big documents or set your history states to be very large, it might be workable.  But be careful.  The safe "set it and forget it" configuration is to make your HDD the one and only Photoshop scratch drive.
When I do get around to getting the second 256gb, I will look at installing the two SSD's in RAID configuration.  If i were to do this, can I load the OS/Apps to the RAID SSD's as well as using them for scratch disks and have the 2TB HDD for storage? I hope that makes sense.
Sounds about right; with 512GB on tap you should be able to run just about everything from C:, as long as you don't keep your entire photo library on there.  Realistically, on a big system that's got a lot of apps installed and has been used for some time, Windows and your apps may end up consuming 100 to 150 GB, so that would still leave you a lot of breathing room.
Keep in mind that what you describe may require 3rd party re-partitioning software and/or backup and restoral, or a complete reinstallation of Windows and everything (usually the latter is what is recommended when moving up to a RAID system volume).
By the way, SSDs stay in best working order if you overprovision - i.e., maintain a fair amount of free space.  The internal controllers need the free space to keep the data organized well and maintain top performance.

  • Question about start up

My HP was stuck on the blue screen when i started it. I put in the windows 7 disk and now it works. was it a virus that caused it to be frozen on the blue screen?

    Hi there @xelizabethemmax
Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel.
I understand that you had a blue screen and that it sounds like it may have been a one time thing. I am happy to help you , however, with the information you provided there is no way of knowing the exact cause.
Sometimes a Blue Screen is caused by a memory error or if you prefer a glitch, a data misread, corrupted software, malicious software, heat issues, and many other potential causes. If it only occurs as a one time error, then it is probably just a random glitch or error. This sort of thing occasionally happens, with the combination of the various pieces of hardware and the drivers that make then work, sometimes a conflict can occur, and you can get a blue screen. As long as it is not regularly recurring thing, then it is probably nothing to worry about. If, on the other hand, you see this happen, several times in a row, or even several times in a week, then some investigation should be made.
If you do see that, sort of repeating issue, then try to gather as much information as you can. A screen shot would also be good.
    I hope this helps.

  • Question about starting rmiregistry

    Folks,
After having used rmi in its basic form for many years, but always doing it the same way, i still have a question:
everytime i have created an rmi object, i have had to set the classpath with my classes added in the classpath before starting the rmiregistry.
if not, i get a ClassNotFoundException on my stub class.
Is this the way it's supposed to be done (set classpath before starting rmiregistry) or is there a better way?
    Thanks,
    Nilesh

Your new question is unanswerable without a survey. In the few RMI projects that I was involved in, we used the second solution - using a clean rmiregistry process and using codebase for applications. Based on customer feedback of the RMI Plug-in I think there is a slight bias towards using a clean separate registry, but maybe it's because the RMI Plug-in encourages such usage.
IMHO Using a clean registry classpath and using codebase has several advantages:
    - You can share a single RMI registry between several projects (e.g., have it started when the machine boots) and stop caring about the startup classpath.
    - It is better for projects that involve more than one server VM (VM crash resilience. The server VM can crash, but it is unlikely that a rmiregistry vm will crash)
    - Sometimes it can help you to detect problems early - if there is a problem with a codebase, it's better to find it when the object is being registered than when a client first tries to use it.
Disadvantages of using a separate registry process:
    - stale class file definitions. During development you will probably have to restart the registry quite often to reload the updated class definitions.
    - no API to stop it. you can only forcefully kill it.
    Probably there is more...

  • Question about start-up screen oddities

    Hey guys,
Quick question: my iMac G5, when starting up in Leopard, doesn't just pop-up the gray loading screen like my macbook- it "rolls" down the screen twice (like a push transition) before appearing. It's quite odd. I don't notice too many other video-related glitches (other than sluggishness and/or occasional lag with dashboard, minimizing apps, screensavers etc.
Is this a problem worth pursuing?
    Thanks!

Probably not, although if you have the Ambient light model, there's a Repair extension program which covers video problems you might want to look into.

  • Thinkpad W530: Questions about creating recovery disk

    Hi there.
My machine is thinkpad W530. Recently I had several problems with it so, I decided to recovery the system to the factory setting. However, it didn't work when the OS restarted and entered to Rescue and Recvery screen. I did follow the lenovo official instruction but I got a eorror happened, it said "recovery failed" and the recovery process was stucked.
In addition, I tried to create a recovery disk and it failed, too. The lenovo said I could have only one recovery disk but I don't rember I had created a disk before. I checked the doucments in driver Q:\factoryrecovery, I also didn't find the "service done_ini".
Anyone knows pls help me and your assistance is really apprecated.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with OS on ThinkPad W530.
As you have done all the troubleshooting steps to perform system restore and you are not able to complete the process because of error.
This kind of issue occurs when you have done changes in the HDD partition before creating the recovery disc. Hence the system factory restore option will not work.
Since you have mentioned that the recovery media has not created for the machine, the only option is visiting the nearby authorized service center for the further assistance.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I’m sure they will be a great help.
    Hope this helps!

  • Simple question about missing install disk

Trying to help a colleague with her laptop.
She had 10.4 on the machine and mistakenly reinstalled 10.3. She seems to only have Install disk 1.
Can a basic install be done with only that disk? No apps or anything, just the essential OS? Don't want to get half installed and be stuck.
    Thanks.

Disc Two has mainly printer drivers and pre-bundled software. You can do a full install of OS X including some printer drivers without the need for Disc Two. You can order replacements by calling AppleCare (have the computer's serial number handy.)

  • Simple question about starting aweb deployment

    Dear Members,
i just started work on web deployment, i want to try a simple application. i have forms 6i CD's only got from OTN subscription.
what is the diffrence between forms 6i server to Oracel Applcation server?
do i have to isntall both? or only forms sever is enough, i have only forms server available.
    please clarify this to me.
    thanks in advance

The for Forms builder (for example Oracle9i Forms comes as part of the builder suite 9iDS Release 2 9.0.2.) has the runtime components available so you can create and test your application without the need for an application server.

  • Question about IMovie and Disk Space

Does iMovie have a cache or somewhere that it keeps stray files? I've noticed that sometimes when I empty the trash, I don't get my disk space back. I'm not quite sure why. I also read somewhere on these boards that iDVD uses double the size of your project in order to burn your movie. Do you get that space back or is there something I need to clean off from that. I bought an 80G MacBook 2 weeks ago and it appears that even that isn't big enough for me - sheesh.
    Thanks
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   80G; 1.5M ram

    Hello Stazya,
you have encountered iMovies non-destructive editing feature. A clip is only eliminated completely from the trash when no part of it is in your timeline any longer.
Video editing requires a lot of disk space (approx. 13 GB for 1 hr of DV video), so you might want to look at an external hard drive with firewire connection for storage. The other thing is not to import hours of video at a time.
iDVD requires that you have at least 15 GB of free disk space in order to create your DVD (it needs the space for the growing Temp file). The best way to proceed is to create a disk image of your DVD instead of burning directly to disc. When the disk image has been created successfully, you can delete the iDVD project and thus regain disk space.
    hope this helps

  • Question about starting PhotoShop CS5

I have Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7. Sometimes when I start up the program it hangs up on "Reading Preferences" for many minutes, and sometimes it stays hung up there for too long and I have to reboot my system sometimes 2-3 times before the program begins to start up again. One time it was so persistent I had to uninstall and reinstall the program so it would start properly.  Any thoughts on how to fix this? It's a real time killer.

I almost feel that Adobe should hand out "gold stars," or similar, to everyone who CAN hit the keys quickly enough...
Good luck, and glad that it's working for you.
    Hunt
PS - from time to time, I will make a Copy of my Prefs file, just in case. Though I have only had to reset them, over 20 years and many versions of PS, having a "known good" Prefs file handy can be, well handy.

    Thank's

I experimented with the latest Zend Studio 8 trials on both platforms yesterday, and it looks a little different depending on which platform you're using:
On OS X, because Zend Studio is now contained entirely within the app bundle, it's tricky navigating to the proper eclipse folder with our Plug-in Utility. As it turns out, the Zend dropins folder does exist if you look down low enough:
    /Applications/Zend Studio.app/Contents/Resources/Java/dropins
When I typed that path into the Burrito Plug-in Utility manually, it found the dropins folder, and proceeded to install the link without complaint. However, the Zend dropins folder is not working properly on OS X either, as already found on Win, so it's not using the link.
On Win, Zend Studio 8 doesn't include the dropins folder in the first place, as noted earlier. Apparently, Zend doesn't have its dropins folder enabled on either Mac or Win.
To see if this problem is specific to dropin links, I downloaded the latest Orbit plugins from eclipse.org and tried adding those directly to the Zend dropins folder, instead of using a link. Zend doesn’t appear to recognize them either.
I'll check with our contact at Zend to see what happened.
