Question about swapping SIM cards on a Z10

Hi, everyone, I am a non-Blackberry user who works in IT support.  One of my clients uses a Blackberry and has often asked me very complicated questions about how to do various unusual things with his device.  At the present time, he is considering switching to a Z10, which would be set up using ActiveSync.  He wants to know if he could swap the SIM card without having to go through the setup process again.   My client travels a lot, and wants to use a local SIM card on an upcoming trip to a very remote area.
I've not been able to find an answer to this anywhere.
This is his exact question: "I just got it from a friend (ATT version) and I am trying to see if I like it enough to switch to it as my primary phone.  Blackberry z10 asks you to sign in with your blackberry world ID when you first set up the phone.  Question: Would you have to do it again if you put a different simm into it?  With iPhone, it makes no difference so long as the device is unlocked—you can then exchange simm cards as often as you want.  Would it be the same with an unlocked blackberry z10 (I know it's not possible with the bold 9900 as System 7 ties your ID to the simm card).  In short, in blackberry z10, could you exchange the US simm for another country's simm without having to wipe the phone,  etc.  "
If anyone can shed some light on this for me, I'd be very grateful.,  Thanks!

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The key issues are thus:
Ensuring that the device is truly carrier unlocked
Ensuring that the specific device model is compatible with the radio frequencies/technologies that the desired carrier uses. There are 4 different Z10 models:
http://www.bbin.in/en/2013/03/03/4-types-blackberry-z10-models-fits-better/?utm_campaign=4-types-of-...
If both of those are OK (separate research of the desired carriers would of course be necessary), then it is indeed a simple matter to change carriers. For example, I changed from ATT to TMO by simply changing the SIM...no need to WIPE or anything, and my same BBID came along just fine. You should, however, always obtain a properly-sized SIM card from the carrier -- there are plenty of reports of folks trying to use "cut" SIM cards and experiencing errors.
With BB10, it's actually simpler than with legacy BBs. Legacy BBs used the BIS service, which required receipt onto the device (from the carrier data network) of Service Books so as to activate the various services that the user subscribed to. When changing carriers, it often could be that a latent Service Book from the prior carrier causes issues when shifting to a different carrier...and that's where WIPING and such came into play, so as to cleanse the device so that the new carrier could deliver all of the proper Service Books to the device. With BB10, there is no BIS, and there are no Service Books...so all of that complication is eliminated.
But, as always, YMMV.
Good luck!
Occam's Razor nearly always applies when troubleshooting technology issues!

  • Question about the sim card

I own the original iPhone and I am getting ready to purchase the 3g. Will at&t give me a new sim card? Or will I have to take my sim card out of the original iPhone. Thanks for the help
    Marcus

you can do either, get a new one or keep the old one.

You don't actually swap the SIM card. For some reason, AT&T doesn't like you to do it that way.
    Go to:
    www.att.com/ipadlanding
edit payment information link...then update the following two fields:
    IMEI:
    ICCID:
You get this info from the iPad (1 or 2) select 'Settings' then 'General' then 'About'...
The IMEI and ICCID info is on that screen. No need to swap the SIM cards. This process outlined above transfers service instantly and does NOT change the plan type, billing, user info, or days remaining. Basically anytime an ATT customer wants to move a data plan the ATT iPad web page is all you need. No phone call!
It took me about 3 minutes and worked perfectly.

  • I am from Australia, i have brought my i pad and i enquired about a sim card to use while on holiday in the uk, i was told it might block my i pad when i return to Australia, is that correct?

    Hi
I am Australian and I am in the UK on holiday, I enquired in a VODAPHONE shop about a SIM card to use in my ipad whilst in the UK, I was told it might block my i-pad when I return home to Australia, is that correct?

I used a UK SIMM card in mine when in the UK. When I got back to Sydney I just removed it and put my Telstra SIMM back in. It found the Telstra network and all was well. I'm not sure how it could block your iPad if its not in the iPad when you get home.

  • Can I swap SIM cards

I've been using a 16GB iPhone 4 for months now. Tonight I bought a 32GB iPhone for my wife. I would like to have the 32GB and give my 16GB to my wife.
If I back my 16GB up and transfer all purchases, etc. Can I simply swap SIM cards, and then restore my data to the new 32GB phone?

If you're using the same iTunes account again you can use the same backup to restore your data and settings. You'll only have to put in the passwords for network and mail again, due to security reasons.
You 32GB will be recognized as a new phone and you can set it up different from the 16GB, if you want to. Backups will be separate from that point on as well.

  • Can I swap sim cards from an old iPhone 4 to another iPhone 4?

My current iPhone 4 is pretty beat up. My dad's, however, is in phenomenal condition. He actually just upgraded to the 4S and asked me to sell his 4 for him. What I want to do is sell mine and keep his. Is this just a matter of swapping sim cards?

Yes and no. Yes you can switch but the IEMI number is associated with the sim card and you will have some problems. I did this when I had to buy a new phone for my son. He had the 3GS and we just swapped the sim cards. Well his data wasn't working but a call to AT&T fixed the problem quickly after they changed the IEMI number in their system.

can i swap sim card from iphone 4 to iphone3

I have no idea what you mean by that. This is what you need:

Also, is your iPhone 3 carrier locked? If so, only a sim from the carrier your phone is locked to will work.

  • Swapping SIM cards from a 3G phone?

    Hello all,
I'm in a bind with my current IPhone 3G and need your opinion. My 3G is on it's last legs, the "Genius" at the Apple store confirmed it...It's having hardware issues and needs to be replaced.
My issue is that I'm not elligible for an IPhone 4 upgrade till September, but I need to get a new phone since I use it primarily for work. I was thinking about doing this, please let me know if it will work:
Instead of waiting till September to upgrade my phone, I'll add a new line to my existing family plan which will let me get the new 4g for the $199 price. My question is this...can I take the SIM card from my existing 3G phone and plug it into my new 4G phone and retain the same phone number? Or am I stuck with having to use a new phone number on the new phone?
    Any help is appreciated.

"I've been on the phone multiple times with AT&T, they wont budge and upgrade my IPhone early"
Call them and tell them that you want to get an iphone for a new line, then you want to switch phones between the phone numbers. They should be able to help, although (as provided ) you will have to pay for two data plans.

  • Swapping sim cards between iPhone and a Sony

I have an iPhone 5c and my son has a Xperia M4 Aqua, they both have nano sim cards and are on thr same contract (monthly). Unfortunately, he doesnt like his Sony so I have offered us to swap phones. Can I just swap the cards over myself and he can start using the iPhone, or do I need to go to O2 shop for them to lock the sim to the specific phone? Many thanks. Mark

    Not true,
It goes from refundable to exchange only.
I was told in detail about this a few times as I refresh to newer handsets.
As the "speed up" fee is included as a end contract charge, under normal circumstances there is no issue, but as the charge terminates your old connection contract, there is no way to refund it and pin back on the remaining 7, 8,9 months etc, all they can play with is the new current 24 month plan.
Now they can edit it's tariff and the handset but can't refund it as there's no way to revert back.
So they should point out its an exchange only return policy giving you chance to change to a different phone or tariff within the 14 day period.
Get it back and point out your rights, before that 14 day expires!

  • Can I swap sim cards between 2 phones on the same account?

I have an iPhone 5 AT&T still in contract and a second phone iPhone 4 out of contract.  I want to upgrade the 4 to a 5s and then swap the SIM cards between them.  I know Verizon lets you move the phone upgrades bewteen phones within the same account.  Does ATT?

I have an iPhone 4 ATT out of contract and upgraded to an iPhone 5s ATT. The iPhone 4 is still on iOS 6 and I'm leaving it there for testing purposes. I have been taking the SIM out of my 5s and putting it into my 4 (using adapter purchased on amazon). This has been working perfectly so far.
Note that both phones were purchased under the same contract. When I say the iPhone was "out of contract" I mean it had been more than two years so I was month to month at the time I upgraded to the 5s -- at which point I went to a 2 year contract again.
    Hope this helps.

  • TS4429 Reset iPhone 5 and now it says "No Service" and something about a SIM card

Help, please! I basically did a factory reset on my iPhone 5 and it says that I have "No Service" - When I view my phone info, there's not even a number for it. The number says "unknown" ***, HELP. It says that I NOW need a SIM card. It's been working fine without a SIM card, before. Why does it say that? Do I insert a SIM card and then take it back out? I mean, my service provider is Alltel. I was not present when my parents bought me the iPhone, I don't know if Alltel put a SIM card in for the setup and then took it out. When I checked the SIM card slot last night, there's NOTHING there. So, how was it even working before? >.>
These are the things I've done to TRY and fix the problem and it hasn't worked:
    1. I've reset the network settings, DID NOT WORK
    2. I've reset the factory settings (again) to try out different options like backup to iTunes or iCloud and wifi connections, DID NOT WORK
    3. I've turned on and off airplane mode, DID NOT WORK
    4. I've turned off and on my phone, DID NOT WORK
    5. I've tried multiple online Apple Support steps, DID NOT WORK
    Help....................

    Thanks for your respons,.
I'm facebooking and emailling everyone to contact Alltel for me. My parents, for example, are just NOT understanding what's going on. They're like "The service is paid for, so I don't know why it's messed up." And, I'm like, I KNOW the service is paid for, that's not the problem. The problem is I reset my phone and now it has NO number on it. The number is listed as "unknown" instead of my actual number with digits. So, I'm pretty sure Alltel can put the number back onto my iPhone, right? I mean, this is ridiculous.

  • About HSPA sim card

I am in south korea where I am using SK telecom's CDMA network using USIM card with a normal CDMA and HSDPA network.SK telecom has also HSDPA network for iphone users.I cut my normal sim card and tried with my iphone.IT detected  the sim card but displays "No network" ans when I used that sim card back to my phone using adapter it shows the network. So to use my iphone in that network what should I do?Should I buy HSDPA sim card or what? what is the phenomena for this?

Phenomena? You are trying to do something that is not really able to be done and I love when people buy these phones and then try to do things like this. Why not deal with what is offered to you?

  • HT201269 what about the SIM card?

I want to replace my old iphone so i got  a new phone with no SIM card. If i follow the steps in this discussion (back up to icloud, etc), when do take out the old SIM card and put it into the new phone?

It depends on what you called old iPhone.
iPhone/iPhone 3G, 3GS uses the standard sim card.
iPhone 4, 4S uses the micro sim card.

  • Upgrading my wife to 4G from a CDMA and had a simple question about the SIM.

    Hi,
I'm planning on upgrading my wife from the Droid to the Droid 4 for Christmas. I intend to buy the new phone through ebay to save a little money and I was wondering how that would work out with the SIM card. Can I just call Verizon and ask for a 4G SIM card or do I need to do something else?

Yep, you can call and ask them to send you one or you can pick one up at your local Corporate Verizon store

  • Anyone swap SIM cards AFTER Activation?

So I upgraded my daughter's account, since mine originally wasn't going to be eligible for a while and now is. AT&T has told me I can get the number for the new 3G S switched to my line, but I have to go to a store and there are still quite a lot of folks at the stores. SO, I was wondering: why can't I just activate the phone on her line, and then once that is done, put the SIM from my 3G into the 3G s, and then give her my phone with my old SIM and restore it from her laptop? Any thoughts?

Success. This worked surprisingly easily and well. I first activated the phone on my daughter's line on her laptop. I then got the message that activation could take up to 48 hours. I then unplugged the 3G S, and inserted my old SIM card from 3G phone into it. The screen showed the message "This phone is activated" in front of the picture of Earth. I placed my daughter's old SIM card in my old 3G, and it showed the same message. I then connected that phone to her laptop and proceeded to do a full restore. All went well. I connected the 3G S to my laptop, and did a full restore. All went well. A couple of passwords for Wi-Fi did not get picked up, and I had to do a VVM password reset, but other than that, they both work fine. When I logged into AT&T, they even showed the correct devices on our accounts. That was surprising.
