Question about syncing multiple ipods to one iTunes library

I have an iPod touch (2nd gen Ver 3.1.3) that I sync to my computer. My daughter recently got an iPod touch (2nd gen Ver 4.0) that was under her father's account. I reset her iPod in order to put it under my iTunes store account. Next I synced her iPod with my computer adding only the items she wanted (games mostly and a few songs).
iTunes didn't seem to have a problem with our devices being different versions. So far so good. I have only synced her device once and haven't synced mine since. We have both purchased apps straight to our iPods and they aren't backed up.
My questions are:
1. Before syncing, will I have to go check everything I want every time in iTunes?
2. We use some of the same apps and games. Will the game data and/or app data be written by another players data? Can you tell I'm really just concerned about my TapFish score?
I'm holding off on syncing until I know the answers.

well, it would be better to keep everything checked in your library and instead create separate playlists for each mobile device.

you can use as many mobile devices as you want with a single iTunes library. iTunes treats each device separately.
i have two Nano's, an iPod Touch, and an iPad syncing with the same library.

I have an IPod Touch and I Phone 4, I am trying to sync my Ipod Music with my library. I get a message saying the Ipod is synced with another library. I had an old Windows XP machine sitting around with a pro sound card, so I put a 1 TB SATA drive in it and use it as my iTunes machine in my living room. The plan is to put ALL of my 1400+ CD collection into iTunes as full-fidelity WAV files (yes, I can hear a difference, and no, you can't convince me to do otherwise - there are a lot of advantages of using WAV files if you've got the space). Doing this, of course my entire record collection will not come close to fitting on one 160 GB iPod, but in reality I don't need to carry the whole thing around at one time anyway -- BUT -- I do figure I will probably need two iPods to carry around everything I need (I mostly play music in my car and on my boat; don't really use headphones much), AND I can probably separate things reasonably by genre: Rock on one, Blues & Jazz on the other. So my question is this: Is it possible to synch two iPods to the same iTunes library? Are there any problems with this?
Another question for anyone from Apple: Any plans to offer at least 8X oversampling on an iPod? Even when using WAV files, connected to my control room monitors an iPod still doesn't sound as good as playing CDs on a decent quality DVD player.

If you want differnt selections of tracks on each iPod, simply create a playlist for each user and on the Music tab use the options to sync music to selected playlists. I manage our four iPods this way. Rather than use manual playlists I have used the grouping field to record which iPod each track belongs on, e.g. Alice/Bob/Charlie and create smart playlists to be synced to the ipod, e.g. *Grouping contains Alice*. An advantage of using this approach is that the grouping information is stored in the file's tag rather than the iTunes library which makes it a simple matter to recreate the playlists if you ever have to rebuild your iTunes library from scratch. (Since .wav files don't have tags this won't help the original poster)

Multiple iPods for one iTunes Library

Hi all,
I currently have a 1st gen iPod Shuffle. I'll be getting a new Nano soon, and am wondering if BOTH iPods will be adle to use the same library.
I.e, if I plug the shuffle in and update the songs, will I be able to do the same with the Nano?

I'm currently syncing three iPods to my one library. No problems so far. I have selected the sync only selected playlists option for all of them. This is necessary for even the 60 gig as my library is too large to fit on an iPod. I have some playlists that are for specific iPods and others that I sync to all of them. I have two ipods nano's and two shuffles. I'm having difficulty getting the twonano's to sync to aone account. One is recognized, when the second is plugged in, the sync ipod options is greyed out and not available. I haven't got past this to try the shuffles yet. Any help? All of the directions that I find state that it should plug and play by merely plugging the second in in and selecting sync......

Check your update preferences. Click on the picture of the iPod in the left pane of iTunes. This will bring up the tabs in the main pane to the right. In the first tab "Summary" check to see if your iPod is set to "manually manage songs and playlists" if it is remove the checkmark and the one against "enable disk use" and click "Apply", your iPod should sync automatically after that.
If it's not set to manual and still won't sync then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

Sync multiple devices with one iTunes library without apps

I've got multiple iOS devices in the house (not all are mine).
Each person has his own iTunes account with their app purchases, while we share the same iTunes music library under one account on the Mac.
What I want to do is to sync the music on all the devices but NOT sync the apps and NOT keep them on the Mac.
I want that every device has his own set of apps but they are not copied on the Mac. May I just disable syncing of apps and delete them from the Mac?
What happens if I want to restore my device? I should have the apps data in the backup right? But how can I restore the apps themselves? (if the answer is possibile only with iOS 5 and iCloud is fine, because all our devices are going to be updated to iOS 5 and I can wait until its release)

Your iTunes collection is individual to computer, not in the cloud somewhere and synchronizing to your computer from there. In other words, if you delete a file on one computer it will still be on the others until you delete it from there. Likewise, if it is on one computer that is not a guarantee it will be on other computers. The closest to this is some of the automated downloading Apple does if you buy things from them. You will just need to make sure your desktop is really up to date before wiping your media from the other computers.

Multiple iPhones and one iTunes Library

I have a question about multiple iPhones and one iTunes Library.
Currently I have 3 PC's, 2 iPods and 2 iPhones.
My PC had the iTunes library on it and everyone was just listening to mine via the iTunes sharing.
Well I bought a Buffalo LinkStation and told itunes to move my library to M:\My Music\..... and then did a Consolidate Library which in turn moved all the music from my C: drive to the M: drive.
My wife's computer has it's own Library with no music (only app store apps, and ringtones).
Now my question is what happens if I tell my wifes computer that M:\My Music\....... is her new location of the library and restart itunes. I am pretty sure this will work fine. But what happens if she syncs her iPhone now? Will all my apps now be on her phone and she will lose hers? She does have her own itunes store account with her own apps. Is there a way to have it so only her apps are on her phone and my apps are on my phone? Can she choose different playlists to be synced than what I have?
Any help would be appreciated.

Since the three of you are using separate iTunes accounts, then you each need to run your own itunes, which should be logged into the itunes store using each individual account. For that, on a laptop, you each need to have your own computer accounts.

2 Video Ipods Sharing One Itunes Library ?

OK I have the 30 Gig 5th Gen Ipod and I love it. Now I want to swap my Zune for a friends 30 Gig 5th Gen Ipod. That would leave me with 2, 30 GB Ipods. My question is how do I use 2 Ipods with one Itunes Library & account? I'm probably going to want one Ipod to just Automatically update to the Library and the other I will just pick & choose manually, if I can. Is this possible ? I know I have to name the new Ipod a different name. I hate the Zune software so I'm giving up on it and having 2 Ipods instead. There are various methods of transferring different songs to different iPods with a single iTunes library.
One is to manage the songs manually.
With this setting, you can drag and drop songs/playlists etc onto the iPod from iTunes, and also delete and/or edit songs which are currently on the iPod without affecting the iTunes library.
If you wish to keep the convenience of automatic sync, then you could set the iPods to sync with "selected playlists". This setting can be found in the iPod summary screen under the 'music' tab. With this setting, different playlists can be transferred and later deleted from each iPod without affecting any playlists stored in iTunes or the playlists on the other iPods.
Also, on the 'summary' main page you will see the option to "only sync checked items". With this setting selected, if you remove the check marks from any songs in iTunes, they will not be transferred to the iPod. You can restore the check mark if you want to put the songs back on the iPod at a later date.
Be aware that when playing songs in iTunes, any songs that do not have a check mark against them will be skipped over and will not be played.

You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

Syncing voice memos from multiple accounts to one iTunes library

I ran into an interesting one today. On the iMac at our house, we have 4 user accounts. All of them point to the same iTunes library (a shared directory that all can see). This has worked great so far, as we can all see all music, and updates are all there etc.
One of my daughters has been using the voice memo app to quickly record things she wants to keep. She has enough of them now she wants to make sure they get backed up. I searched the web and found that you can add syncing voice memos as an option in iTunes. However, my other daughter must also have that checked off, and now when we go into iTunes, we see Voice memos, but it's only from the one phone (i.e. it doesn't appear it will sync multiple phones to separate voice memo libraries or even to the same library).
Does anyone know if you can direct your voice memos to a specific library, or what other alternatives I might have? Ideally it would be automatic (like syncing) so that it's not something we forget to do.

How do I sync my 3 kids Ipods with only one laptop? It seems unreasonable to have a unique laptop for every Ipod in the house. We have 5 Ipods total, with 2 laptops. I need to find a way to put songs on my kid's ipods without having to "erase" the content that's on there now. Thoughts?

I read somewhere that you need two itunes accounts but surely there are loads of people now with a large capacity device plus a smaller one - is it not easier than that having two seperate accounts now?

Managing apps for multiple users in one iTunes library

Hi - my wife and I both have iPhones and separate iTunes ID's. We both share music in one iTunes library and sync to the same library. We also backup our phones to that same computer. We have some apps on both phones (for example, Pandora) and when we backup/restore our phones, iTunes apparently will put "my" version of apps on her phone and "her" version of apps on my phone. Afterwards, when I update apps, my phone will ask for BOTH my iTunes ID AND her iTunes ID. Similarly, her phone asks for both her ID and my ID. Presumably, this also uses two of my FIVE authorized devices, which is also a problem.
My question is how can we manage our apps separately on iTunes so that we can get rid of this annoying behavior? It is very common for families to share one common iTunes library, so I don't see why this would be unsupported.
