Question about the text datatype in SQL server 2008 r2

How do I read/write this datatype to/from the database using C#? (visual studio 2010) I am not sure how to handle it.

Go to Tools/Designers and uncheck this option (see the image). Also, instead of executing the change right away, click on the script option and examine the proposed change. SSMS often makes changes script more difficult than it needs to be.

when I check on Microsoft site it says
Reports are not upgraded when you upload a report definition file directly to the report server
or SharePoint site. Upgrading a report definition in SQL Server Data Tools is the only way to upgrade the .rdl file.
When you open an .rdl file in Report Designer in SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), if the report was
created for a previous namespace, Report Designer automatically creates a backup file and upgrades the report to the current namespace.
This is the only way you can upgrade a report definition file.
Now here is another confusing statement which says
You can upload an .rdl file created in an earlier version of Reporting Services to a SQL Server

All I want to know is if I deploy a rdl made in 2008 r2 to 2012 will it work on the report manager of
2012?

I have tested this fucntionality and can confirm that ssrs 2008 r2 reports work when you deploy them on new ssrs 2012 report manager .
No Migration is required .
I didnt even moved report server dbs .All I did is just deployed reports on the report manager and it worked .

Set out of range value to a time datatype in sql server 2008

Hi,
I have a variable set to time datatype in SQL server 2008. I need to set a value more than 24 hrs to that. Is there any way? I get an error like Conversion failed when converting date and/or time from character string. .Below is my scenario

I am getting this message when I try to create a path to a work file from my application.

SQL Server 2008 is installed. I have placed the computer name and instance in the application's config file as connection source.
The database is also not showing up in SQl Server Management Studio in list of databases.

Installing Full-Text Search in SQL Server 2008 Standard

Hello,
We have a SQL Server 2008 Standard server, and I need to install full-text search in order to take advantage of some features with Autodesk Vault. I believe that I understand the procedure to do so, but, does the installation of the setup tools
and full-text search component cause any interruption to the database instances (or require a reboot)?

Full text search feature is supported by the SQL Server 2008 standard version, so you can install this feature in

Creating New db(with new name) with the old db backup sql server 2008

version: Sql Server 2008
I have a database in a name college1 (more than 200 tables and view etc...)
i want to create a new db with all the structures including the data of the above db college1 with a new name college2
so...i finished the step 1 successfully.. what are the other steps i have to do...like validating the invalid objects. etc....

but when i do..

select * from (only system tables are displaying..)
Did restore completed successfully ? If yes Expand database , can you see tables in the new database you restored ?. Sometimes when you type incorrect word which does not matches anything you wont get help from intellicense you should not be worried about this
if tables are there in new database college 2

Identity seed at the subscriber changes automatically (SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU9).

I have and updateable transactional subscription. The identity seed at subscriber for a table changed (I don't know how) and caused next inserts generate duplicate PKs. I manually reseeded (using DBCC CHECKIDENT) its identity column to upper value to prevent
duplicates. But after 5 seconds it is automatically reseeded to lower value. I repeated reseed command but again after sync with publisher it changed to lower value. How can I solve this problem?

It is possible in this case that you are not syncing frequently enough, or that you are doing more than 2000 inserts on the subscriber between sync's. In this case you will need to change your subscriber identity range.
Right click on your publication, select properties, then in the articles tab, locate your table, click on article properties, and select set properties of highlighted table article, in the identity range management section , set subscriber range size to
some value like 2000 or 10000. 2000 will allow up to 4000 subscriber side inserts between syncs, and 10000 will allow 20,000 inserts on the subscriber.

If you need to move data fast, then use the Oracle Migration Workbench to Generate SQL Server BCP data extraction scripts and Oracle SQL Loader files.
This is the fastest way to migrate the data.
In the Oracle Model UI tab of the Oracle Migration Workbench, right mouse click on the tables folder. there is a menu option to 'Generate SQL Loader ...' scripts. This will help you migrate your data efficiently.

I Am New To The Andriod Bionic With A Question About The Texting Interface

I fracking HATE the texting interface. Ima used to the Incredible. I liked being able to look at past conversations with out having to go to an entirely different program. I liked seeing the last conversation i had with a friend on my home screen. I looked at the options and there is no option for that. I think it's kinda stupid that once a conversation is viewed it disappears, and while I realize it's in the message box I find it annoying to see that stupid little message of "no unviewed messages" on my screen.
Is there a way to make it so that my messages are still viewable on my home screen? Is there an app or a viewer that I just am not aware of?
Any help would be appreciated. I like my new phone, now that it's working, I just wish it would let me see my texts on the home screen.

How do I view the transaction log in SQL Server 2008?

I want to know how to view all the transactions taken during a particular period of time. I know there is a log file, ending with .ldf, created for each database. But how do I view this file?
Is there any tool in the SQL Server studio that can enable me to view the transactions for a given time period?
The reason for me wanting to view the log file is that, last week during a power outage, certain amount of data was not written. And one my friend had also messed up some of the data (unfortunately, she doesn't remember what she did).

Decrypt the hashed password in SQL Server 2008

Hello all,
I have used HASHBYTES to decrypt the password of the user using SHA1, so now there is a requirement to decypt back the password to its original form,
for eg
Pass word is 'Jhon' so after applying HASHBYTES('SHA1','Jhon') it gices the output as "0xB13B42158655F36814F3C4541C6457F7CAD0F719"
Now i want back to get Jhon from the encypted value.
Please suggest an idea to do so.

To expand on what Dan says above, one can use pwdencrypt/pwdcompare from SQL but in a different context (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/173329/how-to-decrypt-a-password-from-sql-server).
The context would be more like the one that is used to determine whether your user passes a CORRECT password. In this case, the hash value saved in the database must be the same as the hash value of the password being passed in. In this
manner, while you can't decrypt, you can determine whether the user knows the password or not without storing the password. Not the best way to enable a password, but a workaround for sure. Similar to Dan's method above but may provide a bit more
detail as to the why's and wherefore's using the examples listed there.

subfolder and then click Tabs.
Tab size: Sets the distance in spaces between tab stops. The default is four spaces.

You cannot update an IDENTITY column. You need to move the data into another table make the changes over there and insert the back the data into original table.

Why is the LookUp object in the Flow Task of my SSIS package going red (and not working) ? Sql Server 2008 R2

I have been working with the Sql Server 2008 R2 SSIS Tutorial at

--specifically -- Lesson 1. I have been having some problems with this lesson where the source data from the samples download doesn’t exactly match the data described in the tutorial, and the tables in the tutorial are different from what
is contained in AdventureWorksDW (tutorial refers to DimTime – AdventureWorksDW contains DimDate and no DimTime).
So, after futzing in BI with this tutorial so that I can at least get it to run in Debug – it errors out on the 2nd LookUp object.
Rather than looking for a fix to the problem(s) that I am having between the tutorial and the stuff I downloaded in the samples --
I want “Adapt” the tutorial so I can use the stuff I downloaded and hopefully learn how to use SSIS with the elements (source data and tables) that are present on my workstation.
Here is a description of what is going on for me – which I really don’t understand what is going on in BI – based on the images below – like what columns (from what tables) are they associating to in the OleDB Destination?
Note: the sql in the LookUps here is the sql that I copied from the tutorial.
I probably need to modify these sql statements – so -- the help I am requesting is to make the required modifications/changes
so that I can adapt this tutorial with the stuff that’s on my workstation.
I downloaded the samples and the AdventureWorksDW mdf for Sql Server 2008 R2.
It turns out that in the tutorial it wants me to select a DimTime table, but the version of the AdventureWorksDW db does not contain a DimTime table.
Instead, it contains a DimDate table. So I tried adapting DimDate for the tutorial.
Additionally, the sample data file -- SampleCurrencyData.txt -- has slightly different data types than the types described in the tutorial, so I selected data types for the columns in the datasource text file that would work in BI would to
connect column from source data file to the table.
After finishing all the steps for Lesson 1 -- when I tried debugging the package – and it error'd out on the 2nd Lookup object whichwent red.
 I edited the lookups and the sample Ole DB Destination to "ignore on fail” and I did all
green but the FactCurrencyRate table is not being populated -- as described in the tutorial, so I reset the on error back to default (Fail on error option). And based on this tutorial -- I believe FactCurrencyRate
table is the table which is supposed to be populated with the data from SampleCurrencyData.txt?
In the sample data file that downloaded with all the samples I removed all the data from the text file except for 6 rows, so instead of the original 1100 or so rows, I have only 6 rows of data in the source data file (just to keep things
simple for debugging for now). I did not modify the data itself.
Here is what the (raw) data contained in SampleCurrencyData.txt looks like (from the samples that I downloaded from codeplex) – it’s supposed to be 4 columns of data – float, nvarchar, datetime, float:

Below are images of my BI Layout for Lesson 1 from this tutorial -- the FlatFile and configurations for On Fail Error, A Flow task, the 2 LookUps (CurrencyKey and DataKey), the OleDB Destination configuration, the Design view of the associated tables and
the Debug Run of Lesson 1, and the following error messages. My goal is to figure out what is going on in BI for this tutorial.
Error: 0xC020901E at Extract Sample Currency Data, Lookup Datakey [51]: Row yielded no match during lookup.
Error: 0xC0209029 at Extract Sample Currency Data, Lookup Datakey [51]: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_INDUCEDTRANSFORMFAILUREONERROR.
The "component "Lookup Datakey" (51)" failed because error code 0xC020901E occurred, and the error row disposition on "output "Lookup Match Output" (53)" specifies failure on error. An error occurred on the specified
object of the specified component. There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.
Error: 0xC0047022 at Extract Sample Currency Data, SSIS.Pipeline: SSIS Error Code DTS_E_PROCESSINPUTFAILED.
The ProcessInput method on component "Lookup Datakey" (51) failed with error code 0xC0209029 while processing input "Lookup Input" (52). The identified component returned an error from the ProcessInput method. The error is specific
to the component, but the error is fatal and will cause the Data Flow task to stop running.
There may be error messages posted before this with more information about the failure.

Thank you for your reply. I changed the error handling as you suggested on the 2nd lookup to redirect to unmatched rows. Now I get all greet. I don't have the conditional split as in your diagram. But also, nothing appears to have
happened in the DB. Aren't the rows in my text file supposed to be added to the FactCurrencyRate table?
How do I get a conditional split?

OK, sorry I forgot to reply you back.
Conditional Split was just dummy task. Ignore it.
Manipulate the data in such way that you get matching records.
Inside Source, for first 2 rows I put the dates which are available in DimDate.

1.00020004,ARS,9/5/2001 0:00,0.99990001

Then in OLE DB Destination, I loaded the rows to TestFactTable.
(Now, you don't even need NO MATCH OUTPUT as there are matching records here)

How to access the datasource window in SSRS for sql server 2008 R2 for writing my query without having to go through the wizard?

I have used SSRS a lot years ago with Sql Server 2000 and Sql Server 2005. I have written external assemblies, ... But now I have to do this with Sql Server 2008 (R2 -- which I realize I am way behind the times already but ...) in sql server 2000 and
2005 there was a tab for datasource to the left of the tab for design which was to the left of the preview tab. How do I get to the datasource window in sql server 2008 (r2) ?
I see that datasource explorer. But where can I get to the datasource window to edit my queries and so forth for sql server 2008 (R2)?

I think I found the answer to my question --- just right-click on the the Data Sources or Datasets for editing connections and dataset queries. I'm guessing it gets even fancier with Sql Svr 2012 - 2014. Man, that's the one thing
about coding platforms -- you let it go for a few years and come back, and everything has changed (well, a lot of things). Now I need to figure out how to add an external assembly to SSRS 2008 (R2).
