Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
Thank you,
Tim

Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
no need.

I would like to Upgrade my computer with SSD that I bought and install the win8 on it, in order to speed things up, but I have encountered a few problems..
    1. there is no sticker on the back of the computer that gives information about the serial number of my windows 8...
    2. lets say in some magical way I could get the serial number out, can I use it to reinstall ? because Ive heard that you cannot use this CD key anyways unless you got a special win8 installation CD key from MSI because its MSI branded windows 8.
am I screwed    ? ?? ? I thought it is possible to upgrade with SSD but it seems like MSI made it very hard, I do not understand why they even putted the warranty void sticker on the expansion bay's .... WEIRD..
Please help !! Thanks in advance,

  • ITunes on multiple computers with shared external library?

Hey guys. I thought I might pick everyone's brain here. I just purchased a MacBook Air with just 128GB SSD but that should be fine as far as local storage. I have an iTunes library that is over 350GB and it grows everyday so even the 256GB storage wouldn't have been enough for me. I have multiple computers and also have an iPod, iPad and iPhone. They all sync via my MacBook through an external hard drive right now and this is the only computer I currently sync to.
Since I have a Mac Mini as well as a iMac, I want to see if there is a way that I can wirelessly share the external hard drive with the itunes library in it and all the computers would be hooked up to it going off that one source and itunes library. I buy music from not only itunes so I import music all the time to itunes and also want to make sure that it will update to the computers that are connected to the library automatically as I wouldn't want any inconsistency's when I need to sync one of my devices to one of my computers.
I hope there is a way to do this, and if there is can you please help me out and explain or point me in the right direction at least to where I can find out about this?
It would be much appreciated. Thank you!

  • Problem with automatic downloads on multiple computers with shared storage

I have a main Windows computer I use to rip my CD's, download Digital Copies from DVD's, buy iTunes movies, and sync my iPhone/iPad.  My iTunes library points to a shared location on a MediaSmart Windows Home Server as "\\mediasmart\itunes\music".  I have turned on automatic downloads on this computer so it downloads music/apps/books if I buy something on one of my other devices.
I also have iTunes installed on the above mentioned MediaSmart Windows Home Server to serve content to my Apple TV's throughout the house and I point the iTunes library to the same location as the above Windows computer - which is local to the MediaSmart server - as "d:\itunes\music".  I do this because the main Windows computer is also used as the main system for the house - quicken, AnyDVD, etc. and I don't want to impact performance on that computer if I decide to watch a movie on one of my Apple TV's.  Anyway, to avoid having to manually copy music and books to the MediaSmart server, I enabled Automatic Downloads.  In short, it works as advertised.  Now, if I buy a song on the main Windows computer it gets automatically downloaded to the MediaSmart server and added to the iTunes library in the Purchased playlist - which is exactly where I want it to go.  However, I just noticed last night that I now have multiple copies of those songs that are "Automatically Downloaded".
As an example, on the main Windows Computer I recently bought the song Gasoline.  It was placed in a folder named "\\mediasmart\itunes\music\kicking harold" and the song was named "01 gasoline.mp4".  Then....within a few minutes the MediaSmart iTunes automatically downloaded the song Gasoline and placed it in "d:\itunes\music" BUT named the song "01 gasoline 1.mp4".  I figured iTunes would be smart enough to actually check for the physical song before re-downloading it and creating another copy of it.
Is there anyway to fix this or some setting I am missing?  I hope the above makes sense.
    Thanks for any assistance.

Yes it makes sense, and no I don't think you're missing some obvious setting. I think iTunes needs to gain some optimisation in this area. For instance if I make a purchase on my iPad I see iTunes downloading an independent copy instead of letting the download complete on the iPad and then copying it over to the PC via Wi-Fi. Hopefully these issues will get tidied up as iTunes in the Cloud meets the real world, though it probably wouldn't hurt to add your feedback.

  • Question about auto-saving multiple files with the same template

Is there any way to do this? The template will never change - but I will need to save it as a new file each time I open it. Just want to know if there is an automatic way to do this when the template is opened each time? Preferably numeric, starting from any number. I suppose I can just save each file myself - but as it gets up into the thousands of files - I'm not going to want to.
It would be really cool if it could auto-save the file, assign it a number, and then place that number in the top corner of the saved document.
If anyone can help - let me know. C.

OK. First add a text field to the document, say "text1". You probably want it to be read-only. You can duplicate it to all pages if needed. Then open the template document, open the interactive JavaScript console (Ctrl+J), and enter the following code:
    // Interactive Console JavaScript
// Get the folder this file is in
    var folder = path.replace(documentFileName, "");
// Save multiple copies (from 1 to 9)
// with the number in the text field
    for (var i = 1; i < 10; i += 1) {
        getField("text1").value = i;
        saveAs(folder + "template" + i + ".pdf");
After you paste the code, highlight the lines and press Ctrl+Enter (or the Enter key on the numeric keypad) and Acrobat will save multiple copies to the same folder as the template. Replace "text1" with the name of the field you've set up and "template" with the name you want the copies to have before the number.

  • Multiple computers, one shared library + music

What's the easiest way to keep a library updated and shared between multiple machines on the same network?
All the files are on my server. I need a library on my server (which is always on) so I can stream itunes from there to my airport express.
However, I'd also like to update the library from my desktop, and add new songs and playlists from there.
If I share the same file, it causes syncing issues.
If I copy the desktop library to the server library that's causing problems a) with locking and b) it means everytime iTunes is opened on the server it rebuilds the library files and so takes 10 minutes to start.
Is there a good solution I'm missing?

The only ones I know about are TuneRanger and SuperSync. They both have a trial. I've been thinking about getting TuneRanger.

  • Several Questions about upgrading APEX

    Hello,
I a several questions about upgrading APEX.
I want to upgrade my APEX 2.0 to 2.2 and hopefully in a few month to 3.0.
Is there a How To about upgrading APEX?
What would happen to my applications?
Would there be any problems about the applications when the APEX version is upgraded to another version?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Tim,
Yes there is (detailed) upgrade documentation provided with the upgrade itself, which you should definitely look through. The 2.2 and 2.2.1 releases are currently available here -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
You applications will be 'upgraded' as part of the upgrade process (i.e. they will continue to work with the new software once the upgrade is complete).

  • Question about upgrade and original iPhone

There might be other thread already, but have a question about upgrade to 3G.
I have the original iPhone and have upgraded to iPhone 3G.
The question is whether I can use the original iPhone indefinitely.
People at Apple store was telling me I can use the original iPhone (without the phone functionality) as long as I don't restore the firmware.
Is this true? What happens if Apple releases firmware in the future? Would this mean that I can only use this as long as machine doesn't require restore? I wanted to give it to one of my family members so she can use it as iPod so any info would be helpful ....

My understanding is the same as the Apple Store Employee.
If you try to update the software on an iphone with no service, I believe that it will be rendered useless.
It may be possible to swap the SIM card for software upgrades, etc., not sure.

  • Is it possible to use Adobe Illustrator in multiple computers with the same account?

    Hi guys,
So our company is a small designing tile company,
we wanted to purchase the Adobe Illustrator and was wondering if it was possible to use it in multiple computers with one account, as we have two computers that are frequently use for designing, or do we have to buy two separated Adobes Illustrators for each computer?
    Thanks

From the End User License Agreement (EULA):
2.1.3 Portable or Home Computer Use. Subject to the restrictions set forth in Section 2.1.4, the primary user of the Computer on which the Software is installed under Section 2.1 (“Primary User”) may install a second copy of the Software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable Computer or a Computer located at his or her home, provided that the Software on the portable or home Computer is not used at the same time as the Software on the primary Computer.
So, while it CAN be installed on more than one computer, they may not both be in use at the same time.

  • ARD won't save multiple computers with same IP and different port!

I'm trying to access multiple computers over the internet behind a firewall with port forwarding.
I can access each computer, but ARD won't save the IP address and port (in IP Address column of ARD 3.1) of multiple computers with the same IP address. It will only save ONE. I've tried 'add by address', adding a list for each computer or adding a list for all those computers. Nothing has worked. ARD will actually change the first computer's IP address to 0.0.0.0
    Example: Static IP address
Computer 1 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:51 (public port 51 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 1)
Computer 2 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:52 (public port 52 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 2)
Computer 3 xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:53 (public port 53 is forwarded to port 5900 on computer 3)
Has Apple really overlooked this or am I missing something? Isn't this how most people would remotely manage multiple Macs offsite?
    Thanks

ARD cannot do this as you're asking. If your
workstations get their addresses from an NAT device
rather than being "real", the ports also need to be
forwarded in the router to the workstation's internal
IP address. ARD uses port 3283 for the reporting and
updating function, so if your Macs are getting their
IP addresses through NAT, since you can only forward
a port to a single workstation, you can only get
reports, push package/files to etc. for a single
    workstation.
ARD uses the VNC protocol for observation and
control, though, and there are a range of IP
addresses for that protocol, starting with 5900. ARD
uses 5900 by default, so that port would be forwarded
to the first workstation. You would, I believe, need
to install VNC servers on the systems (since the ARD
client cannot listen on any port other than 5900
while VNC servers can be set for other ports such as
5901, 5902, etc. You would then forward 5901 to the
second workstation (and on to 5902, 5903, etc.). You
can then use the following information:
Remote Desktop 2: How to specify a port number
    for a VNC client
    to connect.
The only other options are: 1) to run the ARD
administrator on a workstation on the network, and
then take control of that system from outside, either
via VNC or another copy of ARD, or 2) set up a
virtual private network (VPN) so that when you
connect from outside, your admin system is officially
    part of the local network.
    Hope this helps.
That definitely helps. I have ARD installed on my MBP and on a workstation on the LAN. I have used ARD from the MBP to control ARD on a workstation on the local network, but it can get a little tricky. I already have VNC setup on all the workstations. I used to use COTVNC prior to purchasing ARD 3.1.
I guess what I'm really asking is...
How do I add a list of workstations and save the settings (same IP address for each workstation with different ports?) to control/VNC via ARD?
I simply want a list that shows each workstation, so I can control/VNC them using ARD offsite.
Name: Computer 1 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5901
Name: Computer 2 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5902
Name: Computer 3 IP Address: 123.123.123.123:5903
I don't want to have to manually type in the IP address into ARD every time.
Will ARD simply not add another computer to the list if it has the same IP address but different port number as a computer already on the list? I haven't been able to find a way to make ARD do this.

  • Why can't someone from apple answer my question about upgrading to the current version of Itunes

I am amazed that I have been posting questions for months about this issue and no one has given me an answer!!!!  Does Apple not track these discussions?
I have Windows 7 64-bit and am trying to upgrade Itunes to the current version, with no suggestions.
I have found and tried the 64-bit installer and receive the following message:
'This itunes installed is intended for 32-bit versions of Windows. Please download and install 64-bit Itunes installer instead.'
I have itunes 9.1.1.12 currently installed.

Okay ... it's behaving just like the PC Mover thing. 32-bit versions of iTunes and AMDS have somehow been jammed on the PC. When you go to uninstall either of them, the 64-bit Windows installer service encounters 32-bit installation configuration information, goes into a fantod, and you get the error message.
So we'd better try clearing away that installation configuration information, and then trying another update.
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Mobile Device Support entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • How can I distinguish multiple computers with home sharing?

I have 2 computers which have Home Sharing turned on. When I use Apple TV it shows both computers and can play videos from both without any problems.
What I cannot work out is how to change the names of the shares. They both have the same name which appears to be determined by the first name from my itunes account which is sharing files rather than using the name of the library on the computer. So, both computers look identical. I cannot tell which one I am choosing from the list.
Since most of my videos are on an external hard drive which will only be connected to one at a time, I can only tell if I have selected the correct one when the video plays or shows an error.
Why does Home Sharing not care what I want to name my library or about the name of the sharing computer? Have I missed something? I know how to change the name of my "shared library" but it is irrelevant to what Apple TV can see.
It seems pointless to show the name of a shared library if that name is determined by the sharing account when Apple TV can only use one account at a time. Every computer it will allow will be called the same thing.
If it's relevant, my sharing computers are using Mac OSX 10.7 and Windows 7.

When I change it to say Matt's library from administrators library, the name changes on my apple tv. I'm not sure about 2 computers though. I would think changing the library name under preferences would work.

  • Multiple Computers with intunes question!

Right now I have 3 computers authorized with I-tunes. My main computer has the first and orginal itunes that I downloaded. I noticed that I can burn cd's and transfer ALL of the files in my itunes library back and forth from my iphones to the library. I can't do this wih my other two computers. I can't transfer burn cd's or any songs that weren't bought through ITunes. Here's my dilemma, My main comuputer is about to die and I tried to make my laptop my MAIN computer but I can't. They both now have the same library due to external harddrive transfers but the laptop's version of itunes will NOT allow me to transfer any songs that aren't bought through ITUNES. How can I make my new computer (laptop) or any computer the main Itunes computer? I need help fast since my pc with the original itunes is dieing quickly.
    Thank you,

The issue is not connected to the ITUNES software, it's connected to your device. I'm not sure about other devices but the IPHONE can ONLY synch with one library at a time. You can authorize up to five computers to play your purchased songs but you still can't synch with ALL five with an Iphone.
Therefore there's a round about way to accomplish what you want done.
    1. Before your PC dies, Take your whole library and copy it to your laptop's Itunes library or if it's a new computer, download itunes, authorize it, and then copy your whole library into that library.
    2. Once you've done this, connect your iphones to the laptop or new computer. When your iphone shows up on the left of the screen, select it and pick the summary tab. At the bottom of the summary tab , under options check the box next to "manually manage music and video". At the bottom right of the screen select APPLY. You should get a dialog box that says more or less this," this iphone is already synched with one library. If you want to synch with this library instead select the erase and synch button."
What's going to happen is that it will erase everything on your iphone currently and synch whatever songs or videos your choose to synch. From that point on you will be able to synch with ONLY your laptop or new computer.
The hardest part of this is getting your whole library on a external hardrive. it sounds like you have already done this if your laptop already has all of your current music on it. While your pc is still working test it out. if it doesn't work it's easy to re-synch your iphone with your original computer again. But I'm 99% sure it will work because I've done it before.
Don't ask me WHY apple has decided to do it this way, Maybe the person in charge of this feature was an ex PC employer ,lol.
BTW. Don't let the "purchased synching" confuse you. You can ALWAYS synch purchased files with all computers. The method I describe will allow you to synch purchased and unpurchased files the same way you are able to do currently.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question about moving iTunes Media folder/library

    Hello,
I'm responding to the article listed here: iTunes for Windows: Moving your iTunes Media folder - Apple Support that describes moving your iTunes media folder. I have a massive music library/playlists (over 350 gigs and growing). I'm planning to relocate my media folder to Dropbox because I have ample space there and it will allow me to run my library off of multiple computers (though not at the same time). My question is this: if I follow the steps and consolidate and relocate my library to the new Dropbox folder, will all my new uploads and downloads/purchases/imports also start automatically going to this newly specified location? I want to make sure that it would.
    Thanks

Well the way that Dropbox works for me (just documents and data, not iTunes) is that I have a complete copy of the files in my Dropbox folder on my computer at home, and at work, and in the cloud on Dropbox's servers. Each time I update one of the files it is uploaded to Dropbox and then downloaded to the other client machine. When using another computer I can access my files from the Dropbox web interface, or use the Dropbox app on my iPad. It sounds like you are hoping that you can have all of your files in the cloud, and only in the cloud. I don't think it works that way.
For 350Gb and growing I think that realistically you need to stick with local storage. I clone my library to a 1Tb portable drive which I physically take to and from work, At each location I use SyncToy to synchronize the local and portable copies of the libraries effectively giving me three parallel clones of the library at all times.
