Question about using a SATA drive through an Epress34 card???

I have a basic question about OSX and how it treats a SATA drive hung from an Express34 SATA card. So OSX just treats any drive as a mounted drive as far as I know bbut what about when booting...
If, at boot up, I use the 'cmd C' option to select an external SATA dirve hanging off of an Express34 SATA card, will OSX see that drive as if it just were the internal drive in the MBP or is there some inherant difference between the real internal drive and any other SATA drive?
I guess the question is... does the cmd C option really just tell the OS to treat this drive as though it were the interal drive and boot from it (assuming the drive is bootable of course) or is ot doing something else.
If that is the case, why can't I use an external drive and install BootCamp on it, assumiong that I booted from this drive?
Is there a difference between an external SATA drive from an Express34 card and an external firewire drive?
TIA,
Peter

  • Questions about using an external drive as my main drive

This topic has been addressed in discussion threads before, but I'm in search of a few details.
I have a Mac mini 1.42 combo, 512 mb RAM, with an external 250 gb MiniStack FW drive. The external FW drive spins at 7200 rpm, while the internal drive in the mini is a 4200 rpm model. Because of the higher disk speed, I'm considering making my external FW drive my main drive, then reformatting my mini's internal drive to use for backup purposes only. My backups to the mini's internal drive would be bootable, so I wouldn't have to have Tiger installed on the mini's internal drive.
Additionally, I've got my iTunes library on another partition on the same external FW drive. I'm really happy with the result of that move so far.
I've experimented a bit already. I've used SuperDuper to clone my mini's drive to a different partition on the external FW drive, and confirmed that I can boot from it using the external FW drive as my startup disk, so that's not an issue.
I'm planning to move over to the external FW drive and use that as my startup disk and main drive, but keep the mini's external drive as is for a while before I reformat it and use it strictly for backups. I've got some questions before I commit to this, though. (shudder!)
*Updates for applications and Tiger-If I continue to use Apple's Software Update to conduct my software upgrades, will it automatically update the applications on my external FW drive? I'm assuming that Software Update identifies the boot drive and the app's location before performing the update. I'm concerned that Software Update will become confused once it can't identify my mini's internal drive as the 'main' disk, and will lose the functionality to handle my updates.
*Default drives for other applications-For those of you that have already moved to an external disk as your main drive, did you have to change preferences in other apps (like the MS Office Suite) to tell them where to look for files and save new docs/save updated docs? I use Office a lot for a part-time job, and it would be a pain to have to manually update all that info.
*iTunes-As I've already stated, I've moved my iTunes music library over to a partition on my external FW drive and it's worked well so far. What concerns me is the funky way that Apple requires the iTunes management files and folders be on your main drive in your Home folder, but allows the music files to reside on a different disk. When iTunes needs to update itself, or manage the music library, is it going to be happy working from the home folder on the external disk, or will I have problems? In other words, as long as the iTunes management files are on my boot drive, am I OK?
Thanks for wading through this wordy post. If I decide to make the plunge, I'll report back to the list. I'm sure a bunch of mini owners are considering the move to external drives to boost performance. I love the machine, but I can always use more speed!
    Mac Mini 1.42   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   MiniStack 250 GB + Hub

No problem what so ever. I am not certain you will gain anything by it, though.

  • Question about using new battery in old Powerbook

I have a pre-intel Powerbook G4, and the battery is pretty much toast (lasts about 15 minutes now). I have ordered a new battery for it, and I have this question about using it:
Am I smarter to keep the new strong battery out of the PB most days (as I usually work with it plugged in at home) and just pop it in when I know I will be out surfing on batteries? Or is it just as good living in my laptop 24/7 and only occasionally being called upon to do its job?
    Current bad Battery Information below:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1144
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1115
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 12387
    Cycle Count: 281
    thanks folks, Shereen

Hi, Shereen. Every Powerbook battery wants to be used — drained and then recharged — at least every couple of weeks. If you've always used your Powerbook on AC power nearly all the time, and not followed that pattern of discharging and recharging the battery every week or two, it's possible that your use habits have shortened the lifespan and prematurely diminished the capacity of your old battery. Of course it's also possible that your battery is merely old, as a battery's capacity also diminishes with age regardless of how it's used. You didn't say how old the battery is in years, so this may or may not be an issue. I mention it only because it can be an issue.
For general information on handling a battery for the longest possible lifespan, see this article. My advice on the basis of that article and long experience reading these forums is that it would be OK to do as you propose, but I doubt that you'd derive any significant benefit from it. You would still want to be sure of putting the new battery through a charge/discharge cycle every week or two, even if you didn't have a reason to use the Powerbook away from home or your desk, because sitting unused outside the computer is just as bad for a battery as sitting unused inside it. And you should never remove the battery from your computer when it's completely or almost completely discharged and let it sit that way any longer than a day or two.

  • Here's a very basic question about 2 TB external drives and Time Machine.

Here's a very basic question about 2 TB external drives and Time Machine.
Ihave a Mac Pro with a .75 TB and 1 TB drive.  It also has a 1 TB 2ndinternal drive.  My current external drive is too small so I'll begetting a 1.5 TB or 2 TB drive.
Obviouslythe new larger 2 TB drive will backup everything on the Mac Prointernal drive with Time Machine.  But there will be 1 TB of space leftover going to waste.
ShouldI partition the external drive so that the TM portion will be 1 TB andthe use the remaining extra partition for additional file backups withCarbon Copy?
    Thanks for any insights.
I tried searching around on the new Apple discussion forum, but I find it much harder to use than the old forum I used to use.

The problem with terabyte drives is that that a 3 TB is about as big as you can get without going into RAID territory. Ideally, a Time Machine drive should be 3 times as large as all the drives you are backing up. So, if you have 2.75 TB of internal storage, you should have 8 TB of Time Machine space.
Of course, that is "should". If your TB drives are mostly empty, then you can get away with something 3 times the size of your used disk space. Just remember that you are pushing it. Linc is right about Time Machine needing space to work.
It is unlikely that you have regular churn on 2.75 TB of disk. I suggest identifying which drives and folders have the most activity and excluding those drives and directories that don't change much. It would be better to archive the data that doesn't change often and keep it out of Time Machine. Then you may be able to get away with a 2 TB Time Machine drive.

    John,
I'm not sure why you posted in the iMac forum so I'm going to attempt to get you to the correct spot. I would recommend reposting in the Time Machine Forum, this is part of the OS X forums (Leopard or Snow Leopard) because you are using Snow Leopard (your profile indicates you are) please click Apple Support Communities and type Snow Leopard. Then you can narrow the search down by clicking Refine this List.

  • Question about using TVARV in an ABAP program

Hello gurus, Im sorry about the silly question.
I have a question about using TVARV in an ABAP program.
A program is presenting a problem and I think that in this code:
    SELECT SIGN OPTI LOW HIGH
      FROM TVARV
      INTO TABLE R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE
      WHERE  NAME = '1_163431035_VELOCIDADE'
      AND    TYPE = 'S'.
      IF ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B   IN R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE AND
          ZOPERADORAS-OPERADORA = 'ABCD' AND
          ZMM001-MATERIAL       IN R_1_163431035_PRODUTO.
      ELSE.
      ENDIF.
What happens is that the value "ZMM001-SPEED" B not exist in "R1_163431035_VELOCIDADE" but the program executes commands under the IF and not under the ELSE, as I imagine it would work. Is this correct ?
I am new to ABAP programming, but I have a lot of XP in other programming languages and this makes no sense to me.
Anyone know where I can find some documentation of the use of "TVARV" in ABAP programs?
I search the Internet if other programmers use TVARV this way, but found nothing, which leads me to think that was a quick and dirty solution that used here.
If this is a bad way to program, what would be the best way?
    Regards
    Ronaldo.

    Hi Ronaldo,
But in this case, the range is not empty, there are 17 records, in this way.:
For the column "SING" all values are "E"
It means that the result is false if ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B has the same value as one of the 17 records (E = exclude).
For instance, if it has value 'C' and one of 17 records matches C, then the result is false.
The "IF" with "IN" using "TVARV" as used in the program of the post above has the same behavior of a selection screen?
Yes, the same behavior as the selection criterion to be exact. You can press the help key in the complex selection dialog for more info.
I know it's a silly and very basic question, but other language that I used, only the SQL has the "IN" operator, but I think they work in different ways, so I would like to understand how it works in ABAP.
Not silly ;-). Yes they work differently.

  • Question about Using PAPI Web Service in PowerBuilder 9

    Hi, all.
I Have a simple question about using papiws in power builder 9.
In pb9, I created a new Web Service Proxy Wizard and I input a url for papiws(ex. http://seraphpernote:7001/papiws/PapiWebService) and click next.
But I couldn't get any Service List.
In Eclipse, I used this url for using papiws well.
Does anybody know about this case??
    help me plz.

IIRC you must activate PAPI-WS for the engine. In Studio you do it by right-clicking on the project, then "engine preferences". In enterprise/standalone you must activate PAPI-WS in the Admin Center.

  • Question about using 10g/11g and APEX ...

    Hi,
I just recently learned of Oracle's APEX and have a few questions about using it.
Can I use APEX with express, standard, and enterprise editions of 10g and 11g?
Are all of these free to use?

You might want to read about APEX rather than jumping into questions that are reasonably well documented. Info at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/index.html
    Your specific questions:
    1) Apex is a package that can be installed into any properly licensed database.
    2) The price for the production license of the database varies by edition.
The price for Express Edition is $0 for use in production. Part of the cost for that edition is 'no Oracle Support based support, no patches, data volume limitation, etc.'

    hi all
    i have a question about using Runtime.getRuntime().
if i use this to get a runtime reference to run an
external program, is it considered as starting a new
thread inside the thread that starts it? No. Starting a process, starts a process. Threads have nothing to do with it.
is it safe to do it in the Session EJB? if not, what
can you recommand to do it? thanksSo what? Run another process? If you want to run another process in java then your choices are to use Runtime.exec() or use JNI. And using JNI will probably end up doing exactly the same thing as Runtime.exec().
"Safe" is harder. Typically to correctly use Runtime.exec() you must use threads. And as noted threads ideally should not be used. You can use them but if you do you had better understand why they didn't want you using them in the first place. You had also better be sure that you really want to wait for it to complete.
Other than that Runtime.exec() is safe because it can't crash the VM like other interfaces can (like JNI.)

  • A question about using 1394 driver

    Hello to the community people,
I have a device (A) that sends some data to my computer via a firewire port. And there is another device(B) that is connected to another firewire port of the computer. I want to listen device A and send all data received from device A to device B, the same data without any manipulating. Is there any way to do it(Read bytes from firewire and write to another firewire)? If yes, introduce its tutorial documents, please. (Note that I don't want to do  video streaming)
Another question is how to define a virtual 1394 driver in a computer? for example, I will save all data, and after a while, I will transfer all data in a buffer and the computer should suppose that this buffer is the the information that firewire device is sending to the computer.

    Hi no1,
Do these devices have drivers that you have installed? Do they have a driver application programming interface (API) that you can access, probably through a C++ DLL? I assume you're using LabVIEW (since this is the board you posted to). If you're using LabVIEW and you do have DLLs for your cards, you can use the Call Library Function Node or the Shared Library Import Wizard (which creates wrapper VIs for your DLL calls).
Otherwise, you can use NI-VISA to communicate with your devices. Here is a tutorial how to configure a USB device using the VISA Driver Development Wizard (which would be analogous to Firewire), and here is an overview of VISA.
You would read the data from device A and then write that data to device B, using either the DLLs or VISA, depending on which route you choose. Unless the devices have specific functions to transfer data to each other in their API, you will have to transfer the data by reading and writing the data in LabVIEW. I hope this helps!
