Question about VPN connections on a E2500 router

Hello,
I am working with vpn setups for the first time, so I have some questions I would really appriciate some help with. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the lan side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am haveing is with the "inside" computer.
Other info:
I am using windows 7 for the vpn access
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • A question about VPN Service

A friend has asked for help setting up a Mac Mini Server he just bought for his office. He knows very little about OS X/OS X Server and thought I could help. Unfortunately, while I am familiar with OS X, I know almost nothing about OS X Server.
All he wants OS X Server to do is file sharing and VPN. My question about VPN is this, are there any other services on OS X Server that need to be configured and running for VPN to work?
I understand the router needs to pass VPN traffic but other than that, do I just need to set up the VPN service on the server or do other things like the OS X Server DNS Service have to be up and running as well.
    Thanks for your time.

You will also need to have Open Directory running for user authentication.

  • Question about VPN with Server 2012

I am a programmer, but I know enough about network and server configs to be slightly dangerous when it comes to configurations.
My task today was to try to setup VPN access at our office. We have a 2012R2 standard server that was not doing anything (not even on), so I decided it would be the perfect machine for the job.
To make this as short as possible, we are a real small office, 3 guys. We have a high end (although consumer grade) router that is not a VPN end point, but does support VPN tunneling through its firewall. Router is DHCP server, however most workstations
and servers in the office are setup with statics.
I got everything to work (pats self on back) to allow me to create a new VPN connection from an outside Windows client machine, and everything worked as I wanted it to, except for machine name resolution. I understand this is due to limitations in NetBIOS
and how that all works. I found an article about setting up a WINS server, and once I did that, it resolved my issue and I was able to connect to shares or RDP to machines by name instead of by local IP address.
So I came here to ask this:
    1) The WINS server method required me to manually add each machine/IP I wanted to register. I am not sure why this is, but I am thinking it has to do with the server not acting as the DHCP/DNS server (or maybe this is just how WINS works?). This isn't a
HUGE deal, but it would be nice if I didn't have to manually manage this list. If Windows clients on the local network here can broadcast and see all available network machines, why can't the WINS server make the same network crawl automatically?
    2) In reading about the WINS server, most people said it was a relic and one should use DNS instead. I am looking for more information on this, to see if this is something I should consider or worry about.
    3) Would I make my life easier if I made the 2012 server both DHCP and DNS server and removed those tasks from the router?
A side note if it matters, we are NOT on a domain here, just a loose set of workgroup machines. We find that setting up a whole DC and adding all these machines and accounts to a domain is counter productive for us, because we are such a small shop here,
with nothing to restrict from each other, and we find that adding a domain into the picture complicates things more than it simplifies things. Of course unless someone can make a case why we should just move to being on a DC.

    Hi,
There have the Browser Elections procedure when you use WINS service, but the WINS service in domain environment and workgroup environment have the different Browser Election.
By default, all domain controllers in a domain are browser servers.
You can refer the following KB to understand the procedure:
    Browser Elections
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc959896.aspx
    How Computer Browser Service Works
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc737661(v=ws.10).aspx
Description of the Microsoft Computer Browser Service
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/188001
If you install a WINS server the WINS server will handles name registration requests from WINS clients, register their names and IP addresses, and responds to NetBIOS name
queries submitted by clients, returning the IP address of a queried name if it is listed in the server database.
WINS provides the following benefits for administering your TCP/IP-based network:
A dynamic name-to-address database that maintains support for computer name registration and resolution.
Centralized management of the name-to-address database, alleviating the need for managing Lmhosts files.
Reduction of NetBIOS-based broadcast traffic on subnets, by permitting clients to query WINS servers to directly locate remote systems.
Support for earlier Microsoft® Windows® and NetBIOS-based clients on your network, permitting these types of clients to browse lists for remote Windows domains without requiring
a local domain controller to be present on each subnet.
Support for DNS-based clients by enabling those clients to locate NetBIOS resources when WINS lookup integration is implemented.

  • Trouble about vpn connecting (PPTP VPN did not respond)

I am new in mac. These days I have searched a lot on line for the solution to this problem but none fixed it. So....
Our lab only have an instruciton for connecting vpn under windows and I succeeded to do this by following this in windwos 7.
There is a host name instead of ip address in the instruciton and I think that should not be the problem.
And in the protocol of TCP/IP property settings, the user was asked to Remove the tick before “Use default gateway on remote network”.  Besides, in the instruction, it sets to obtain the IP address and DNS address automatically, so that I do not have such inforamtion about the server of our lab.
In my new macbook pro (Mac ox lion 10.7.3), I did the following things:
    1. in system properties->network, Select the + button at the bottom left of the screen to add a new connection.
    2.  Select the following:
    a. Interface: VPN
    b. VPN Type: PPTP
    c. Service Name: SAS VPN
    d. Select Create.
    3.  Configuration: default
        server address: host name “xxx.xx.xxxx.xx”
account name: (I am sure there is no error in this)
       encryptiong: none
    4. click Authorization settings to input the password.
    5. Click the Advanced button. and Select Options. Verify Send all traffic over VPN connection is checked. (and is not checked ) (I tried both, none of them worked). About the other seetings.
    6. On the TCP/IP tab, set "Configure IPv4" to "Using PPP." So I can not input the DNS server information.
    7. click apply and then try to connect.
However, it returned me an error said " PPTP-VPN server did not respond. Try to reconnect. If that continues....."
I think there are lots of experts in mac os x. Can anyone here help me with this? Thanks a lot in advance!

    >> encryptiong: none
I found out, that you NEED the encryption in Lion Server VPN.
I understand, that you use Lion Server as you mention the problem here in the Lion Server section.
I do the following: Install the "Admin Tool VPN" from App-Store for some Euros. Than I found section PPTP and there is a check for
    a) Active
    b) Compression and Encryption
I take the check for b) out and restart (Off / On), took my XP-Notebook and connected via PPTP and all working!
Since Lion Apple hide a lot of things from the official tools and if you have some special tools, you can activate function. There is
Level 1, the userlevel: Something like Dashboard in the new MS-Servers or the Server App in the new Lion Server
Level 2, the administrator level: The difference between Server App and Server Admin! The Server Tools you need download separatly as you know after a while, something is missing. Same with the new Airport Utility: Userlevel tool = AU 6.0 with grafical fun and some basics, AU 5.6 is the tool for the admin what you separtly need download.
Level 3, the special deeper view: Typically it is the command line interface, CLI, but if you need some GUI (grafical user interface), you buy an App like Admin VPN Tool and this tool (App for some Euros) in real does nothing else than comfortably set some inside switches and flags that the offical GUI admin tools not have realized.
    Why?
Oh, I think it's because security issues. You want the Mac Server become like a Microsoft Server? So, you shouldn't use not encrypted connections and that's (in my understanding) the reason why the Lion Server EXPECTS YOU to use encryption and the official tools not give you the oportunity to switch the encryption off!

    BigBen,
I'll answer your questions here point by point (for clarity).
) No, that won't be possible. A line input is only stereo, so all you'll receive signal-wise is just a stereo stream. You'll need a coaxial or optical input to get that signal to the card (only available on the Platinum dri'ves).
    2) In theory that could work, yes, the connections are there. That isn't something we would have tested (or support), though.

  • ASA 5510 Anyconnect VPN question-"Hairpin" vpn connection on same external interface

I have a Cisco ASA 5510, I want to allow a VPN connection to be established by a client on one of the inside interfaces(10.20.x.x) to be able to go out the single External interface and get authenticated by the ASA to create a VPN tunnel to the other inside interface (10.0.X.X) and access resources on that subnet.
Basically want clients on a WLAN to be able to VPN back in to the LAN with the ASA in the middle to get to company resources,
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Tommy

When we connect any VPN on a device then it is always a TO THE DEVICE connection and I am afraid we can connect only to the local / nearest interface where user is connected in a network with respect to ASA.
I have seen this scenario working though earlier with one of my clients wherein he has configured his DNS server accordingly so that depending upon the source of the DNS request an appropriate IP address was provided for same DNS name. For example if user from IP address range 192.168.0.0 range connects to abc.com then it will get IP address 192.168.1.1 and if a user from range IP address10.0.0.0 connects then it will get 10.1.1.1.
If we configure the same scenario as well then your requirement will be fulfiled with same name however VPN has to be enabled on wireless interface again. If not, then as you have described configuring a new domain name for VPN connection only for wireless users should do the deal.

  • Asking About VPN connectivity

Y the VPN on iphone doesn't work ??

The VPN client provided on iOS does work.  (I use it.)
That you're apparently encountering connectivity errors would then imply that there's a configuration error within the particular iOS VPN client, or some sort of incompatibility with the features or requirements of the particular VPN server involved, attempts to establish multiple L2TP VPNs across a NAT device (PPTP works better, there), ports that aren't open in an intermediate firewall and/or ports blocked by an ISP, or a configuration error with the target VPN server, or an attempt to establish a VPN connection from a network to itself or across two networks that are both using the same IP subnet.
VPNs are comparatively fussy to configure, and certainly somewhat arcane.
If the settings on the various pieces involved don't all match, then the VPN won't connect.
In general, I recommend acquiring a firewall box with an embedded VPN server, as that can be simpler to manage than a host-based VPN server, and particularly a host-based VPN server where the VPN connections must traverse one or more NAT firewalls.
Some details on your particular here could help.

  • Questions About Losing Connection

Like other people I've noticed here, my WRTG45 v5 wireless router has recently started losing connection to the net multiple times a day. At first, we thought it was because our modem was old, so we bought a new one, but it didn't fix anything. So here are my questions:
    1. My dad seems to think that a configuration or setup CD (that we lost) is required to make the router work with the new modem. Is this true? I don't think so, but I have to ask just so I can get him to move on.
    2. I noticed in other posts here that programs like Bittorrent can cause the router to be overworked or whatever. This might explain our problem, as I use Bittorrent a lot (but not everytime the connection has dropped). If this is indeed the problem (or contributing to it), is there anyway to deal with it while still being able to use the program?
For the first couple months, the router was working fine. Even with Bittorrent running a lot, and all the computers (2 wired, 1 wireless, and 1 wired X-Box) engaging in various activities on the net. So this is very puzzling to me.
One more bit of information, I have given every computer a unique, static IP address. However, I noticed recently that when I look at the router configution after typing in its IP address in a web browser, that it is set to DHCP Enabled.
Also, in the advanced TCP/IP settings for this connection, under the WNS tab, the NetBIOS setting is set to the default of using NetBIOS from the DCHP server.
Since I am using static IP addresses, could these DHCP centered settings be causing problems? Although, even if they are, it still doesn't explain why the router was working fine months ago (unless someone changed stuff without my knowing).
Anyway, any help at all would be appreciated.

I assume you meant that you had a WRT54G v5 router.
First of all, the setup CD is not required.  All router settings can be made by going to the router's web pages at 192.168.1.1
It is possible that the static LAN IP addresses are causing your problem, if they were not set up correctly.  Linksys has a strict set of rules to follow regarding static LAN IP addresses.
With Linksys routers, a fixed (static) LAN IP addresses must be assigned in the device that is using the address.  So you need to enter the fixed address in the computer or printer, not in the router.
When using a Linksys router, any fixed LAN IP address must be outside the DHCP server range (typically 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.149), and it cannot end in 0, 1,  or 255.
Therefore any fixed LAN IP address would normally need to be in the range of
    192.168.1.2       thru 192.168.1.99  or
    192.168.1.150   thru 192.168.1.254
assuming you are still using the default DHCP server range.
Also, in the computer, when you set up a static LAN IP address, you would need to set the "Subnet mask" to 255.255.255.0  and the "Default Gateway" to 192.168.1.1
It is also important that no two devices on your network be set to the same static LAN IP address.
Check all of your static LAN IP addresses.  If you have violated any of the above rules for static LAN IP addresses, it could be the cause for your problem, and you should fix it before attempting any other router repairs or changes.
You should leave the DHCP server turned on.  This way, if you have a visiting friend who you want to connect to your system, it will be easy to do.   Leaving the DHCP server turned on should not cause any problems, even if all your addresses are fixed.   In general, you should let the DHCP server assign all addresses, unless there is a specific reason to use a static address.  You can mix static and DHCP assigned addresses on the same LAN, as long as you follow the above rules for static addresses.
Linksys routers have had problems when BitTorrent is used.  Your router has new firmware posted that should improve compatibility with BitTorrent.  It is firmware version 1.02.0   You will need to download and install this firmware (after fixing the static address problem, if any).  (Note:  When you update your firmware, you should use a computer that is wired to the router.  Also, when you do a firmware upgrade, turn off all other computers on your system, and unplug all other wires from the router.)   After you have installed the firmware, and powercycled the router, you will need to reset your router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.

  • A question about direct connect and getting emails on BB curve 8350i

can someone please help me....I'm new to BB and I just purchased a curve 8350i. First question when I direct connect to someone after i'm done with the call, i always get a message about the call i just did. How do I stop from getting those annoying messages. Second question I have an email set up in my BB. Now everytime I get a email I get a copy in my message icon and my email icon, how do I stop from getting a copy of my email messages. I would appreciate if anyone can anwer my questions...Thank You

    1. no idea
    2. you can find answers for this all over the forums, it gets asked atleast once a day.
the messages icon is a general incoming icon, all incoming messages go there, only item you can seperate from it are sms & mms texts.
if you use txting, you can seperate sms from the msgs, then hide msgs. use email and sms icons
when you delete your email from email icon it will automatically delete from msgs as well. its not actually 2 emails in 2 locations, its 2 locations pointing to the same email

  • Uk Mac user. Questions about internet connection please!

    I own a Mac G4 800 Mhz tower.
At present connect to the internet via ethernet to router.
The past few days it has been running very slowly.
Checked the Netgear router page where it states the incoming strength is approx 4MB.
*+What can be done to help utillise the incoming speed please?+*
*+What do I need to make the G4 cable free please?+*
*+Is there a 3rd party version of the Airport card (if that is needed) please?+*
Any help and advice gratefully received!

What can be done to help utillise the incoming speed please?
That depends where the slowdown is. The quickest way to cut this problem down to size is to find an Interactive Internet Speed Test online, and run it.
If the measured speed (which is essentially download speed) is way too slow -- you need to complain to your ISP about it, and follow their suggestions.
If the measured speed is reasonable, but your perception is that it is too slow, post information about what situations, using what browsers, are the worst offenders, and readers will take a run at advising you.
I suggest you start a different thread with your inquiry about wireless equipment.

  • Question about secuting connection to the database

    Hi.
I need to fix an Oracle Consulting custom solution that became incompatible with the new version of the application.
    What's the catch:
this solution is basically a SQL*Plus script that resides on the filesystem and performs a bunch of commands to generate and load data from Views.
My difficulty with this is that one of those commands is a CONNECT.
I'm concerned about the security implications of performing an "open connect" via SQL*Plus command like this.
    My questions are:
    1) Is there a way to secure the SQL*Plus session so that its commands are not visible via a Trace or something else?
    2) What's the best way for me to perform that CONNECT command in a secure way, so that the user and password do not become visible?
    Thank you.

I do not see the problem.. SQL*Plus is a client like any other client. VB. Java. Delphi.
Such clients will also make use of a connect string to Oracle. In some cases they will prompt for username and password from the end-user - assuming Oracle schema authentication is used. In many cases they will automatically (via an internal hardcoded connect string) connect to an app schema and then use a USERS table to authenticate the end-user (and thus not use Oracle security).
The biggest concern in this case is making this connect string visible. EXEs and DDLs can be dumped and ASCII strings extracted - and with it, potentially hardcoded username and passwords.
In case of a SQL*PLus script, this is in clear text in the actual script itself. But unlike a VB EXE that runs in the wild (on some client PC somewhere), I would assume that in your case this maintenance process runs from a secure o/s account on a server.
In that case, all that is needed to revoke read/write access to that script from all other o/s users on that server.
Of course, this assumes that the actual SQL*Plus script uses the CONNECT command and not the sqlplus command line - as command line switches are visible via process monitors.
Another option is not to use Oracle schema authentication for that maintenance process, but o/s authentication. In which case only that o/s user can logon to that schema and execute code. Thus no username and password to protect as the o/s account itself provides the protection.

  • Interesting phenomenon -- cellphone iChatAV! -- and a question about VPN...

Maybe a month or so, when I first bought my iSight, I was quite pleased to find that it worked "right out of the box" with my 2001 Quicksilver G4/867 and ActionTec GT701WG DSL modem. I successfully connected to the test sites, to ralphjohnsr, nqmacuser, and rjinwi. Then I got one for work. Oddly enough, I could connect to all the aforementioned sites from work, but could never connect to/from work from/to home (a 2002 Quicksilver G4/800).
Then came the 10.4.7 ppc combo update. All was ok on the home front, but work was a disaster. Couldn't connect to anyone, no test sites, no nuthin'.
After battling the issue since updating in vain, today, for grins and chuckles, I disconnected my work computer from its wired ethernet connection, plugged in my cell phone to a USB port (I've got a 1XRTT cellphone modem script for my Mot T730C) and made a AVchat over PPP dial up via 1XRTT to home! I was really quite surprised that it even worked because dslreports/stest reported my cellphone uplink at a big whoppin' 39kbps max -- usually less -- but it worked multiple times. Kinda absolved my home and work computers and my home DSL modem (and all the current computer and DSL modem firewall port settings) of any guilt....
That leaves work's firewall as the likely culprit. Work's firewall is pretty tight, we need to use VPN to get in from the outside, and so I'm now thinking that something in the SIP or AV port handover is not playing nice with work's firewall, especially since 10.4.7 since I can't connect to anything at all anymore from work. Problem is, it doesn't seem to want to play nice with VPN, either, whether initiating the call from the outside or the inside, after outside has established a VPN tunnel.
As an aside, I did some tcpdumps on all of ichat's ports on both ends of the (cellphone) circuit today along with an errorLogLevel7 -- I plan to consolidate all that into a chronologically arranged excel spreadsheet, since the AV connection was successful, then do the tcpdump game on a failed work ethernet connection to see if a comparison of port logs plus ichat log leads to any clues. (Ralph, if interested when I complete the "successsful call" spreadsheet, you are more than welcome to have a copy to perhaps post on your excellent website -- it would be way too big to post here -- if interested, lemme know.)
Anyways, getting back on track, I'm thinking that work's firewall is my problem, but it seems to me that I should be able to iChatAV over VPN -- I can iChatAV between computers that are both inside work's firewall. So I'm wondering, anybody out there have any experience with using iChatAV through a VPN? I'm using VPN Tracker on my home Mac. Work's VPN gateway requires Checkpoint VPN-1 certificates at both ends.

    HI J.v.,
The most likely problem is that your company may be using their internet connection for their phone service as well.
This would also use SIP on port 5060 as ichat does.
Even if they do not use the phones/internet in this way the ISP might offer it and be blocking port to get people to pay for the service.

  • Newbe question about SG300-20 dropping port to Router

    Hello to you all
Today I received my new SG 300-20 managed switch to replace an unmanaged switch with some faulty ports.
I want to use it in a a combined Home / Small Office environment. It is my first purchase and use of a managed switch so am still new at it.
I come from an IT-background but more from the software side than the hardware side of things, but I feel comfortable with hardware and network things.
I was planning to start using the switch in its most basic configuration first and gradually start learning the finer details of its configuration, with the ultimate purpose of setting up several VLANs for business, private use and media playing and to do some IPv6 experimenting.
All my attached devices are Gigabit network capable.
The issue is when connecting the cable to my router (an ISP provided FritzBox 7340 (an ISP version comparable to 7390) which is IPv6 capable) the SG 300-20 keeps dropping the port.
The log show the following messages repeated 3 times:
    2147483597   2011-Mar-18 17:08:53 Warning   %LINK-W-Down: g8
    2147483598   2011-Mar-18 17:08:50 Warning   %STP-W-PORTSTATUS: g8: STP status Forwarding
    2147483599   2011-Mar-18 17:08:46 Informational   %LINK-I-Up: g8
It doesn't matter which port I use the same thing happens each time.
All other devices connected to the SG 300-20 just work fine.
When I connect the router to my old switch it also just works fine.
When I connect my old switch with router attached to the SG 300-20 it works fine and the DHCP on my router will provide the SG 300-20 with an IP-address.
I just can't connect the router directly to the SG 300-20.
I'm a bit at a loss of where to look for a solution.
As I said all is still in default settings.
Can anybody point my to a solution or way of finding out what is the problem why the port is being dropped?
    Thank you
    Alwin

This is a gateway device.....also known as a modem/router. It combines the functions of a separate modem and router in one package.
The Q1000 is the main router on your network, so any port forwarding (Apple calls it Port Mapping) must be done on the ActionTec device.
The Time Capsule is in Bridge Mode. In this type of setting, all ports are automatically already open. So, there is no need to "open" a port that is already "open".
The Time Capsule will simply pass through any information that it receives from the ActionTec gateway to other connected devices on the network.

  • WiSM Switch - Questions about Client Connections

    Hello!
i?m planning a worst case scenario for a customer site. They got a couple of 6500?s with WiSM Modules installed. Now I?m sitting over a instruction of what to do when a WiSM breaks down and I got a few questions regarding the clients.
In the case a Controller stops responding, the AP?s are automatically switched to the secondary Controllers. What happens when the Primary Controller returns - they automatically switch back, right? Is this automatic switch combined with a loss of wireless connectivity? (LWAPP tunnel gets torn down, and a new LWAPP connection must be established - that is basically the same if I restarted the AP, isn?t it? ) If so, how long does it take for the connectivity to return? Is it possible to manually do the switch to a later time (late in the evening..) to minimize the effects for the clients? The Goal is to keep the clients up and running, without termination of the wireless connection - if this is possible.

Also, after checking my WLC's Controller->General config screen, you will find a parameter called "AP Fallback".
It can be either "Enabled" or "disabled" and determines whether or not an access point that lost a primary controller connection automatically returns to service when the primary controller becomes functional again.
I suppose that if you set this parameter to "Disabled" in the secondary controller, before activating the repaired/replaced primary controller that this would also accomplish what you want.
It is not clear if the same setting would also need to be applied to the primary controller. You may need to test this aspect first to be sure.
Presumably, you could then re-enable "AP fallback" when you are ready to force the LWAPs back to the primary.
    I hope this helps,
    - John
