Question about WOL (Wake on LAN) Unicast method

Hi,  We are trying to get WOL working here on our enterprise network using the Unicast method.  It seems that this method depends on the machine you wish to wake having an entry in the router/switch ARP cache.  The problem is that this cache
times out rather quickly by default and the suggestion was to increase this timeout setting so the entry stays in the cache longer when the device goes offline.  Our WAN guys are saying that is a bad idea and can cause all kinds of issues if we set this
to say 12-24 hours.  How is everyone else using Unicast WOL dealing with this issue?

A few corrections and notes:
- Yes, unicast WoL traffic requires the system to be in the ARP cache of the final layer-3 device. This has nothing to do with WoL though. This is a requirement for *all* unicast traffic. That's simply how ethernet works.
- Subnet-directed broadcasts aren't less secure. They can however be exploited enabling certain types of DoS attacks most notably the Smurf attack. This can be easily and reliably mitigated as mentioned though.
- "Both methods require routers to forward UDP packets from your site server." This is a deceptive statement at best. In Unicast, the traffic is transmitted just like all other traffic on the network and requires nothing special on the network
side and no configuration of any "forwarding". Only with subnet-directed broadcasts is the network required to "forward" traffic.
- While a consideration, DHCP is usually not a factor with desktops unless you have a ridiculously short lease time. With laptops, same story unless they actually change subnets but then there's nothing you can really do about that. This is why I recommend
setting the heartbeat to at least once a day if not more often however.
Finally, do you know about Peer wakeup in 2012 SP1 and R2? Peer wakeup is much more reliable. You generally use unicast with peer wakeup but it overcomes the ARP cache limit.

No, you can't turn the nic off!! How are you going to wake it when it's turned off?
Unfortunately if "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked,
then "Allow this device to wake the computer" will be greyed out.
I have another PC that WOL works (DELL) and it has all 3 mentioned checked!!!!!
I dont think "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" means turn off the NIC!!! I think it means enable power management. Maybe a real expert can chime in here.
    Hmm....what do I do next????

  • IPhone 4 WOL (Wake on Lan)

    Greetings.
Have anyone had issues with iPhone 4 and WOL? Im trying to use WOL to turn on my computer, but its not going so well and im pretty much out of ideas.
The computer(s) are WOL ready, i have tested with a program that listens on port 9 for magic packages and they go straight thru from PC to PC, just not from my iPhone to PC. Very very strange. Tested a few programs so far and still no luck.
I have tryed all the simple stuff, like turn of Windows Firewall. Setup a static ip on my iPhone. Opened UDP port 9 on the router.
    All help is much appreciated!

The answer lies with your particular router. Many will not forward port 0, but will forward ports 7 or 9. You want to forward UDP packets. Where do you forward the WoL packet too? You need to forward it to the broadcast address for you LAN which, generally speaking, is the router IP with the last number in the quartet changed to 255 (e.g., if your router's LAN IP is 192.168.1.1, the broadcast address is 192.168.1.255).
Your computer doesn't have an IP address per se until it is awake. So, you can't forward the port to the computer's IP address. By forwarding the magic packet to the broadcast address, everything on the LAN will receive a copy of the packet and the iMac with the packet should see it and wake up.
Now, that said, it's quite possible that your router will simply refuse to forward packets to the broadcast address. Also, many corporate firewalls (if there's one between you and your router) will not forward packets destined for ports (like 0, 7, or 9) that aren't widely used for a business purpose.

  • WRT610N - Wake Up Lan

I have a question about the WRT610N router.
Is there an way to make wake on lan go trough my router because now he is blocking the wake on lan.
I have added my computer to DMZ.
I have assigned my computer a IP address
Wake on Lan is working local by the way
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

WOL (wake on lan ) will not work on DMZ.
You need to forward the  port number on the Linksys router for the application which you are using for WOL. It should be port number 7 or else you can contact the application vendor to get the port number. Then Login to the router setup page with the ip 192.168.1.1.. (assuming that the ip address of your linksys router is 192.168.1.1).Also give the static ip to the computer.
Under Setup tab there is sub tab Basic Setup. On that page there is a button called "DHCP Reservation". Before you click it, make sure the radio button with the label "Enabled" (DHCP Server) is ticked. Click on the button "DHCP Reservation"and fill out the form in the pop-up. Fill out "Manually Adding Client" (name, IP and MAC address). Click "add". Choose "Save settings" at the bottom of the page.
Now go  to the "Application & Gaming" tab. The page opens on "Single Port Forwarding". Type the external port number 7 to internal port no 7(assuming that the port  number for the WOL application is number 7) for both TCP and UDP to the IP of your machine. Tick the box "enable". Choose "Save settings" again.
Note: Before trying these steps make sure you can use WOL without connecting the linksys router.
    This should resolve the problem.

  • Wake on Lan not working properly?

So as far as i'm aware Windows 8 supports wake on lan whilst the device is either in sleep or hibernate (not completely off) and so far it works fine when in sleep mode (no randomly turning on like lots of people have been saying) but nothing happens when in hibernate. Is there any particular reason why this may be?

    Windows 8.1
Using unified remote (full) to control power options (tried in both administrative and not)
Qualcomm Atheros AR8162/8166/8168 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30). Set to recieve packets
and i think i've made all of the nessasary changes to BIOs and my router (Belkin) to allow WoL (seeing as it works when sleeping)

    Hallo Forumreaders,
WOL (Wake On Lan) works only through a router when it is capable to forward to broadcast LAN-IP-adres.
In my consideration only the good old BEFSR41 is capable to forward to the broadcast adres for example 192.168.1.255 (SM: 255.255.255.0)
Because there is no IP-adres in powerless PC's the "Magic Packet" (which WOL realy is) MUST be send onto your LAN by means of the broadcast-adres.
Other routers are  NOT able to sumit a adres like 192.168.1.255 in a subnet of 255.255.255.0 because they are NOT allowed to use any broadcast-adres.(they can get trouble by means of a broadcaststorm!!!)
So do not get rid of that old router you have!!
    More info;
The "Magic Packet" contains the MAC-adres of your recipient host and wil trigger the powersupply of that PC.
For Internet WOL, try http://www.dslreports.com/wakeup, submit your IP-adres of your home, your MAC-adres of your PC and klick on "Wake up".

  • Wake on lan

I just purchased the MSI K7N2G-L/NFORCE2 board. I noticed it said it had WOR(wake on ring), but I didn't see a WOL (wake on lan). Is it possible to hook this up?

i have not tried it but the option is listed in win xp's device manager. double click the nvidia network controller listing. goto -advanced- click on -wake on lan from power off- check to see if its enabled or not. i think its enabled by default. hope this helps.

  • Macintoshes on heterogeneous networks - wake on lan

    Hi All,
I've been setting up a couple of Macintosh labs this summer, using Intel based iMacs running Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). I've purchased Apple Remote Desktop to allow me to manage all the Macs from my office. The one problem I've run into that I can't fix is waking up the Macs across our network after they've gone to sleep. Our (Windows-based) DHCP server sees the Macs go to sleep and then disconnects them from the network; so my directed broadcast WOL (Wake on LAN) packets fall in the bit bucket. Our computer center folks say there's a fix for this, but they won't do it because they claim it opens up our entire network to a distributed denial of service attack. My workaround is to never let the Macs go to sleep - which I hate because when idle they draw 48W of power each, and when asleep only 2.4W.
Anyone out there have a heterogeneous network that allows Macs to safely sleep?
    thanks,
    john

hehe, yeah I've been through this and feel your frustrations. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
    Here is your answer!!!
Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Network Adapter>>> Select the netowrk adapter, right click and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab and then go down the list and look for "Wake on Settings">on the right select disable.
It should not "Turn On' randomly now.

  • Any Wake On LAN Software for Leopard?

Ok, I have a PC upstairs, and an iMac downstairs
I have got VNC viewer working on my Mac now to be able to access my PC upstairs.
However I would like to be able to remotely switch it on after I have shut it down, I know my network card has to support it, but on my iMac what software do I need, and where can I get it form (free preferably!)
SO I need some WOl (wake on LAN) software for my iMac, anyone help
ps any tips on doing this gratefully accepted, including VNC and remote PC'sing ;0)
    cheers

I cannot make it work, it seems the WOL packets are not transmitted to the remote computer. I have a G5 (2004). Is it compatible?
how can I check the remote computer is indeed receiving the packet?
I'm on the same network, connected to a switch (so no router involved). I can connect via file sharing, I can ping, but not too sure where the WOL packet gets losts.
    thanks!

  • Cisco RV180 and Wake-On-Lan (WOL)

    Hello,
I got a RV180 (firmware version: 1.0.1.9) and I am bit surprised by the lack of the configuration flexibility...
I am trying to use Wake-On-Lan (from internet) to wake up a machine in my home (trying to be green and not keep the machine on all the time, just when i need it).
    The configuration is quite simple:
Work machine ----> (internet) ----> (WAN) RV180 (LAN) ----> Home Machine (off, linux, wol enabled for UNICAST and Magic Packet - flags "ug")
    What i tried so far:
    1. All the following RV180 settings together:
       a. Used Port Forwarding from the WAN IP to the Home Machine IP (UDP port 7 and 9)
           - i had no choice but to put the Home Machine's IP address, since i cannot put the BROADCAST address (xxx.xxx.xxx.255) <- forbidden in the configuration page (i wonder if a new version of firmware allows this)
       b. Used Static DHCP to pair the Home Machine's IP to it's MAC address
       c. Used IP/MAC binding for the Home Machine
    2. All the following RV180 settings together:
       a. Created a PPTP VPN connection
       b. Connected from the Work machine (obtained a LAN IP, can ping the Home Machine if it is on)
       c. Tried to send a broadcast message to LAN (no success !)
    3. I also tried to activate the MULTICAST and BROADCAST WOL flags on the Home Machine but it seems that it receives some messages and the machine wakes up in a very short amount of time after i shut it down (it seems that RV180 sends some messages over LAN by itself).
In all the 3 possibilites above i was not successful in using WOL....
Is there any possibility to use WOL from internet in this configuration ?
Are there new options that will allow WOL from internet in the latest firmware ?
    Any advice is appreciated
    Thank you
    Mircea

    Dear Mircea,
Thank you for reaching the Small Business Support Community.
    I was researching about your concern and found several people with the same inquiry where they were told WoL is not a supported feature on these Small Business Routers and that I think is a correct assumption, however I found the below threat where someone with a similar case scenario as yours were able to make it work, it's on a different RV router but I thought I may be interesting for you to check;

Please let me know if there is any further assistance I may help you with.

  • Question about Scheduling WOL

I have been testing the WOL stuff in Zenworks. I am trying to confirm something. When configuring the schedule for the wake on lan service object, is this just for when this object will check for any policies for waking up the machines. I have found that the only way that I can get the machines to wake up with the shedule is to set the schedule in the policy then stop and restart the WOL service on the Netware server. (I have only been testing this for one afternoon) If I change the WOL policy schedule to wake up the machines, will these changes be automatically recognized without unloading and reloading the WOL service on the workstations.
Thanks in advance for any information or direction.

  • H77MA-G43 wake on lan (WOL) issue

    Hi guys,
I need WOL to be enabled on 4 machine h77ma-g43 based, I3 3220 CPU.
I have last BIOS installed , 1,9, I've disabled eup, tryn' for half an hour to enable WOL on the integrated NIC but nothing seems to work...
I think the only way is to buy a new PCIE NIC... (because there's "wake on pcie" on the bios settings) and this is very disappointing.
PS. When mobo is turned off, I see no led activity, WOL software is well configured and I often use it with other mobos/PCs.
Any suggestion? If not... this is the first mobo I ever see that not support WOL!!
    thank you

  • K9A2 CF Wake On Lan / WOL issue

    Hi everyone,
Need a bit of help here
I've been finding it impossible to get Wake on Lan working on my PC.  I cannot manage to get the lights on the back of the LAN port to stay on after sleep or shutdown.  I've tried all different settings in BIOS:
    - enabled hpet
    - enabled acpi function
    - set acpi state = s3
    - enabled resume by pci (pme)
    - enabled resume by pci-e
    - in Vista device mgr I have enabled "Shutdown Wake-On-Lan"
    - and "Allow this device to wake the computer" - although I didn't think that should go along with "allow the PC to turn off this device to save power".
I have also upgraded bios (1.8) and LAN driver (Realtek 8111B v6.216).
I'm not sure if the issue could be related to the PSU?
I'm completely out of ideas - can anyone help?
Has anyone got WOL working using the onboard LAN for this board K9A2 CF?
If you need any more info then let me know
    Thanks for your help,
    Colly

What happens is that CMOS forgets all manual settings you have done previously. Starts a-fresh. You set date, time, out-speed for the processor and boot order. Some other adjustment too, but what I don't know.
Did you use LiveUpdate for the procedure? LiveUpdate is easily disturbed because it runs in a busy Windows environment. That may be another reason for the problem you have. You may have to re-update. Please ust the forum USB-tool next time. It does its job in a quiet environment.
