[Question] Add SSD to GT60 2PE

Hello all,
tomorrow I'm going to replace my current MSI GX660R for a GT60 2PE 3K edition (:D). I was just wondering, the system has 1TB HDD + 128 GB SSD. I want to expand the SSD, but I was wondering which SSD cards I can put into the GT60? I'm a bit of a newbe on this subject. I thought i read somewhere that I can expand it to a maximum of 3x 128 GB. And that it has to be mSATA because of the Super RAID 2 module. Is that correct?
To summarize my questions;
* Can it only be 128 GB SSD's or can it also be larger ones?
* Does it have to be mSATA because of the Super RAID 2 module?
* Do all SSD's have to be the same size (since there is already a 128 GB one installed)?
* What brands are good options (I heard Samsung and Crucial are good)?
* Do I also have to check for certain read/write speeds?
Many thanks in advance for the answers!

I know some people are using three 256GB SSDs.
Super RAID 2 is designed for using mSATA SSDs.
It's recommended to have the same size SSDs in order to have better performance.
Plextor or Toshiba is also good options.
If you already have one 128 GB SSD inside, I would suggest you to add the same brand with the same model SSD to have a better perofrmance and avoid the compatibility issue on SSD.

  • Need help regarding SSD - MSI GT60 2PE

    Hi all,
I have purchased a "GT60 2PE DOMINATOR PRO", but I don't quite understand what this means:
    Quote
    Up to 384GB Super RAID 2 + 750GB HDD 7200rpm
Specifically, the "Super RAID 2" stuff. The particular model I'm getting has a 1TB 7200rpm HDD, and no SSD.
My question is, will a "Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5 inch Basic SATA Solid State Drive" be compatible? I don't understand what size or type any of these SSD's are. This is my first time with a high-end computer. Sorry for the lack of links by the way, apparently I'm not allowed post 'em.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not certain whether or not your model is set up for Super RaID. I has a similar question that is explained here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=180343.msg1297750#msg1297750
The laptop must be configured with the Super Raid adapter. I thought all the Dom Pro's came with it and was disappointed to discover that is not the case.
I purchased a 500GB Samsung SSD following that bit of disappointing news and intended on doing a clean Windows install on the new SSD ... I planned on then using my 1TB drive that came with my GT70 Dom Pro as storage. I discovered that I can't do a clean install on the SSD without purchasing ANOTHER copy of Win 8.1. Seriously.
Looking for solutions at this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=181164.0
While some of this is true, some is not.
You do NOT need to purchase another copy of Windows 8.1....You need to use the MSI Burn Recovery disks that you should have made after turning the notebook on for the first time to install Windows onto your new SSD. I've done this, many other users have done this, it's what you do to install a new SSD/HDD.
As for the SuperRaid, since the model the user is buying only has a single 1TB HDD in it, it will NOT have SuperRaid adapter, and they would need to purchase a 2.5" SSD in order to install an SSD into the laptop.

  • Hi Everyone Im New, Got Question About Upgrading MSI GT60 0ND With SSD

Hi Everyone I'm New, Got Question About Upgrading MSI GT60 0ND With SSD.
:welcome:So As I've stated I'm new here, or at least got a new MSI notebook.
Ive got the new MSI gt60 0ND with 750GB HD and 675 Ge-Force GTX , anyways to the bottom line.
I would like to Upgrade my computer with SSD that I bought and install the win8 on it, in order to speed things up, but I have encountered a few problems..
    1. there is no sticker on the back of the computer that gives information about the serial number of my windows 8...
    2. lets say in some magical way I could get the serial number out, can I use it to reinstall ? because Ive heard that you cannot use this CD key anyways unless you got a special win8 installation CD key from MSI because its MSI branded windows 8.
am I screwed    ? ?? ? I thought it is possible to upgrade with SSD but it seems like MSI made it very hard, I do not understand why they even putted the warranty void sticker on the expansion bay's .... WEIRD..
Please help !! Thanks in advance,

Let’s take a look on the detail spec., 384GB SSD Super RAID, Intel Core i7 4800MQ @ 2.7GHz, top level GTX880M 8GB GDDR5 graphics, 32GB RAM. It’s all top level and could use for 3 more years of ultra-quality games!
When first time to use MSI gaming notebooks, you will feel amazing about the SteelSeries keyboard is really good typing feeling and solid based. It comes with multi-color backlit and move the windows key to right side, that really professional design as a gaming notebook keyboard, and the only one with real gaming design.
Take a look in the SteelSeries Engine, the exclusive gaming software only for MSI gaming notebooks. This macro keys software built in Keypress macro, Text macro, 1 key launch program and Disable key function, besides F1~F12, all other keys could be used for macros setup, and 4 layers of keyboards o setup 4 sets of macros with 4 sets of different backlit combinations, so this is really a great software for smarter and stylish gaming experience.
With CPU-Z tool to check, the upgraded Intel Core i7 4800MQ @ 2.7GHz, TDP 47W, 4 Cores 8 Threads is really great performance, CPU Boost could up to 3.5~3.7GHz.
Because of Core i7 4800MQ and GTX880M, the 3D benchmarks comes with breakthrough scores than ever on the notebook platform, 3D Mark Fire Strike: P5351 pts.
The GT60 Dominator Pro on 3D Mark 11 gains P8461 pts, it’s whole new level of the gaming notebooks, and It’s over 15% faster than GTX780M!
The 3D Mark Vantage boost up to P33115 scores, it’s 14% faster than GTX780M!
Then we check on other software of DirectX11 3D performance, the Heaven Benchmark is world’s 1st software tool to test DirectX11 effects, this time we use Heaven Benchmark version 3.0 to test.
Set the Tessellation on normal to enable DirectX11 effects and run Benchmark, the Full HD resolution could get 78.2 FPS(Frames Per Second) high score result.
Since this GT60 is 3K IPS panel edition, of course we have to try 3K resolution, you could see that the result block is smaller at 2880x1620 resolution, the result is 42.7 FPS with same setup, so we could say that 3K resolution will reduce over 45% of the FPS rate in this test, but GTX880M is too powerful, so still over 40FPS, and most games we need to get over 30 FPS to play and feel smoother, at least 20 FPS to play a game, if lower than 20 FPS, that will makes people feel lag obviously and feel dizzy easily.
Since we tried some benchmark, of course we have to try at least a famous game to the real world experience. Battlefield 4, the biggest FPS game title since end of 2013, is one of the heaviest loading games on PC platform.
First we made Battlefield 4 detail at 1920x1080 with Ultra Graphics Quality setup.
The gaming frames is 46 FPS, really smooth and around 20% faster than GTX780M.
Once we tune up the resolution to 2880x1620, the FPS drops a lot because the Ultra mode also set 4xMSAA (Anti-Aliasing), that will impact the performance a lot in higher resolution, also make graphics memory demand around 3GB~4GB, seems the 8GB GDDR5 with GTX880M is prepared for upcoming games with such as 3K or even higher resolutions!
We could see it’s about 24~28 FPS under 3K resolution with Ultra Graphics Quality, most time it will reduce over 40% FPS rate of the gaming performance.
Seems to set the Battlefield 4 with “High” graphics quality on 2880x1620 resolution is more suitable to play the game smoother in every theme.
It’s about 42 FPS, close to the 1920x1080 Ultra graphics quality. So if we want to play heavy loading games at 2880x1620 resolution, set to High graphics quality setup is a good option for 3K gaming!
After these 3D and gaming tests, let’s take a look on the temperature of the cooling system. The room temperature is 25 degree C, the temperature of fan out part is 71.2 degree C, it’s not a surprise because of GTX880M and Core i7 4800MQ, even it’s a bit lower than most gaming notebooks with this 2 combinations. The palm rest and keyboard side is 30.6 degree C, it’s really cool for users to hands on.
After the fabulous experience of great 3D performance, let’s take a look on the benefits of “Super RAID 2”, normal 2.5” HDD is about 80~100MB/s, single SSD is about 400~550MB/s, BUT, GT60 Dominator Pro boost over 1536MB/s and average is 1477MB/s, that’s 15x faster than single HDD, almost 3x faster than single SSD.
If we check on the AS SSD Benchmark tests, you could see more detail of the storage access performance is amazing, the Sequential read is 1116.76MB/s, write is 786.79MB/s. 4K-64Thrd read is 665.09MB/s, write is 461.18MB/s, it’s ultra fast!
The GT60 Dominator Pro 3K IPS edition comes with Killer Doubleshot LAN and WiFi, it provides faster response time of gaming experience, when you at different LAN/WiFi environment, Killer software will ask you to make an internet speed test, this will fine tune your LAN/WiFi for smoother and faster online experience.
MSI also got a new software tool called “Dragon Gaming Center”, this tool is also good for hardware monitor and utility launch tool. Also could show the status of Hybrid Power enable or disable.
The ultimate weapon for enthusiast gamers:
The GT60 2PE Dominator Pro 3K IPS version is extremely powerful, it comes with most of the features that a great gaming notebook could have, 3K IPS panel is really great effect of vision quality, SteelSeries keyboard with SSE is amazing for gamers to play their games smarter, Sound By Dybaudio present really good detail sound quality, Killer Doubleshot is faster for online gaming, of course the GTX880M is awesome for gamer to play Full HD even 3K resolution games, the backlit of Dragon logo and keyboard is really beautiful.
    Conclusion:
The overall score I will give this GT60 2PE Dominator Pro 3K IPS edition with Super Pack is 95 out of 100, this is really great machine for any hard core gaming or power user usage, I would recommend any one to must-have this notebook if it’s affordable for you!!

Ok either you work for MSI or you changed the settings in 3dmark11. I only scored around 5K with my GT60 2PE 3k. Any idea why I'm scoring 3k below you? Laptop was plugged in btw. Also how can you enter bios settings with this laptop? I suspect that maybe the hybrid gpu thing is affecting my score, and the Pc is probably not fully utilizing the GTX 880M, maybe in bios I can disable the integrated CPU's video card??? Please let me know. Thanks.

  • Buying MSI GT60 2PE Dominator 3K Edition

    Hey MSI forum
I'm looking to buy a new laptop. I live in Denmark where the taxes is very high, but are going to Taiwan as exchange student and therefore considering to buy it there, but what is the price in Taiwan?
I have to configuration options in Denmark:
    3,000$
    MSI GT60 2PE 480NE Dominator Pro - 3K IPS Edition - 15.6" - Core i7 4800MQ - Windows 8.1 - 16 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD + 128 GB SSD
    or
    2,500$
    MSI GT60 2PC 485NE Dominator - 3K IPS Edition - 15.6" - Core i7 4800MQ - Windows 8.1 - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD
I hope that someone can find something comparable and maybe where to buy in Taiwan.
    Thanks in Advance
    Nikolai

The only thing I would make mention of is the warranty. I'm not sure how that is handled or transferred. Just something to keep in mind, as it might end up being more costly that way.

  • Add SSD to DV7 (LC748EA#ACB)

    Hello!
I want to add SSD OCZ Vector 150 to my notebook as a disk with Windows.
I clone Win to this SSD and set it to my notebook as a disk 1.
But I can't select my new ssd in BIOS as bootable disk.
    BIOS version HP F1.B
    Please help me)

What did you use to clone the disks? And to be clear, you now have the SSD in the primary slot and the hdd in the second slot? Try removing the HDD completely and see if it will boot just off the SSD. The HDD should not be in the boot order if it is in the second bay.
The SSD is a full sized 2.5 inch SATA form factor, not an mSATA mSSD, right?

  • Cannot access BIOS on a GT60 GT60 2PE Dominator 3K Edition.

Hello, I need to replace the hard drive in my GT60 2PE Dominator 3K Edition. I have searched online and the key to enter the BIOS is "DEL" but it will not go into the bios. Of course when i try to boot from a windows disk secure boot stops that from happening.
Any ideas how i can enter the BIOS
    Thanks Guys.

Check your current BIOS version, and update to the latest version E16F4IMS. x17 (x can be 1, 3, 5 or 7) if yours isn't.
If so, then you need the BIOS update tool in windows, contact with the MSI and ask for it.
How to check BIOS version in Windows?
    1. Run the command prompt. (Type "cmd" in search column and choose command prompt)
    2. Type "dxdiag" and press enter.
    3. In System Information page you will see the BIOS version.

  • Add another HD (NOT SSD) to GT60 with 680M

    Hello, all.
There is a lot of talk about adding an SSD to an existing configuration, but my question is this:
Can I add another 2.5" internal HDD to my existing GT60 with 680M/750GB drive? Is there another free drive bay and connection to allow this? Or do I need to go with an SSD?
If I can do this, is it fairly simple? I just need a lot more storage and 7200RPM is good for me right now.
    Thanks!

If you don't mind waiting, and still want the adapter......we could talk through PM's and you could paypal me the money in USD, and then I can order it and forward it to you in Austrailia. If you don't mind trusting some random internet forum goer that is. I actually have the adapter you want already, I ordered one originally for myself, just in case I decided to use a normal 2.5" HDD. Better yet, you could paypal me, I'll mail you my adapter, and then order another for myself with the money you send.
I don't mind doing this, as it only takes a little bit of my time.
Forgot to mention, it'd cost a little extra due to shipping to AUS as well. =/
That would be great if you don't mind doing this for some random internet forum goer as well
Can you please email the cost for the module, freight and your paypal account details to me? Ill get the money to your right away.

  • Add 128 ssd to GT70 2PE-1041US

have bought 2 adata ssd 128 can i add it to the existing sandisk ssd for raid 3
or will there be trouble getting them to work together.
How would i set this up either the 3 or the 2 together.
have done burn recovery will this be ok to reinstall

    lol...I misunderstood.
I would suggest you use the same manufacturer and the same model.
I personally used 3 Sandisk SSDs to build the RAID before, one is bought several months ago and the other two are bought later. They are the same model in the same brand "Sandisk". They are just different batches of the products from Sandisk's factory.
But one day one of the SSD failed. Then I bring them to one of my friends who is BIOS engineer. According to his experience, there's still a slight difference on the SSD's firmware (yes, it has firmware) even if I used the same models & the same brand of the SSDs. It just failed to boot up anymore. The RAID status also shows failed. So I removed the older SSD and rebuild the RAID configuration. Now it works fine.
If you are trying to build the RAID on different models by different manufacturers, you'll put yourself under unpredictable situation more than that I met.

  • Add SSD Drive in 2nd Bay

I have a new DV7-6C95DX on which I installed Windows 8. I'd like to add an SSD from NewEgg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239046
Does anyone know what wiring I will need to accomplish this, the 2nd drive bay appears empty with no place connect a new hard drive.

  • Add SSD drive

    Hi,
I recently purchased a Hp Envy J171 and would like to add an SSD drive to make it faster. So my question is does anyone know which SSD drive out there that work best for my laptop ? and how do I install the new SSD drive ?
    Thanks

Can we have your full model? There is a 15-J171nr and sa and they are not the same. It is important to know if you have the mSSD accelerator 24 gig drive. That will impact the instructions, but the best SSD drive to get is a Samsung 840 Evo. Your budget is going to determine the size but even a 512 gig is pretty affordable, compared to not too long ago.  Here is the Manual:
    Manual
See page 42 for how to remove the service door and access the hard drive and possibly the mSATA.
This link has access to all the available sizes of the Samsung 840 Evo:

  • Add SSD and running OS from it in an HP Desktop

Is it possible to add an SSD to HP 700-070d P/N: H5Y85AA Desktop and moving the OS to that SSD?
Prompt reply would be much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Yes, you can clone your current HDD to your new SSD, install new SSD on your machine and run from there. Please note:
    (a) SSD normally smaller (2.5" vs 3.5") therefore you need a mouting kit for it, such as one of the following ones:
          http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=2.5%22+TO+3.5%22+MOUNTING+ADAPTER+BRACKET+SSD&_sac=1
    (b) When cloning, you MAY need to select only the OS drive, otherwise it won't fit UNLESS you have larger (capacity) SSD. There are many free software around
      http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/five-apps/five-free-and-reliable-cloning-tools/
and you can also get a cloning kit from vendor for around $10-$15.

    Hi,
Please check the following list, updated last week (Feb 11, 2014):

Unfortunaterly your machine is NOT in the list, you can't ADD, you can only REPLACE.
    Regards.

  • Question about SSD space? And BootCamp?

Ok, so I installed BootCamp a while ago because I wanted to have a Windows partition and to play games and such on my MacBook Air (2012). The game I wanted to play is relatively large; about 23 GB + or - a few gigs, and I knew that I should include some extra space in there for updates and other stuff. So, I put about 30GB on the partition. When I went on it, there was only like 10GB free!!! So, I kept increasing and increasing until now, I have a like 48.5 GB partition to hold a 23 GB game with only 7.3 GB free. So:
    1) Where did all of the rest of the storage space go?!
    2) I noticed I think 10 GB or so is in the "Windows" folder. Can I compress this? Will it damage/mess up the Windows Partition? I want to free up some space, but I don't want to break anything.
    3) Can I REMOVE a few gigs from the Windows partition, or do I have to start over? If I start over, will I have to redownload my game and all that?
    Section 2
I have a 128 GB SSD MacBook Air. I thought that it would be plenty of room. However, I just got a new iPhone, and within a month and a half, I have taken over 2,100 pictures, which takes up numerous GB. So, if I want to back up my iPhone and iPod and all that, I will need a lot of space on my computer. However, I have a Windows partition taking up about 48.5 GB as I remember, so that's about 40% of the entire amount of space on my computer. So, I had a 72 GB portion or so on my Mac side. I thought that this would be enough, but I somehow only have like 28 GB left. If I keep taking pictures, want to back up things, get apps, etc., I would like to free up/add space. So:
    1) I know this sounds stupid (I thought I was good with computers and Apple technology, but I just wanted to make sure) ... but is there any way to permanantly add extra SSD space onto my Mac? Because there's the option to upgrade your Mac to like 256 GB which would be awesome, but as far as I know, this is only online, with the more expensive version of the 13" MacBook Air, and I don't know if you can do this with the computer already bought and installed and all that. So, is there any way to add space? Like not free up space, but ADD it?
    2) How does the whole Time Machine/ Pass port thing work? If I transferred 10 GB of stuff to Passport or whatever, (1st of all, is it a USB?) if I plugged it in to my computer, could I easily transfer stuff back and forth? Would it take a while?
         i) If I had a game on my computer, happened to have Passport or something, and transferred the files to Passport... (this will be a long question) once I plug in the Passport, could I launch the game? Or would I have to transfer the files back to the desktop...
           a) Basically, what I'm getting at is... If I had a game's files on Passport / Time Machine / whatever it is called, if I had it plugged in to my computer, would I have to transfer files to the computer to launch/play a game, or could I just play it by putting in thing..
    3) If there is a way to increase the space to 256 GB or so, how much would this cost? How long would it take?
I am so sorry about all of my confusing questions, but I just want to ask a bunch at once so I can set things straight in my mind xD
    Please help! Thanks so much!
