Question Aperture as a Browser for Viewing  Photo Library

Hello,
I am been using Nikon's ViewNX as a browser for viewing photos mainly for workflow.
It is real buggy with Snow Leopard OS 10.6.2 ..... freezing and all. Use Photoshop for adjusting photos.
Question: Is Aperture worthwhile to use for Browsing Photos downloaded from my camera ?
I realize it has a lot of power for editing photos (like photoshop). But I wish to dump the VIEWNX as a photo browser.
Thanks,
John

John,
Hopefully Nikon Software will release a Snow Leopard capable versions in late January (as mentioned on other Nikon-related photog-forums).
I too would like VNX to be solid and work better, and be a more user-friendly intermedium to manage some details while working between NX2 and Aperture.
(Gosh, as a sidenote, can those Aperture engineers make the nav panel fonts any smaller for some of us of strained eyeballs...only kidding Apple, only kidding.)
I do quick n painless edits on "most" of my photos in Aperture (still a newb at it, and just switched from a managed lib to a referenced one), and use NX2 to really pop those few pictures I manage to have composed well.

  • What are the options for viewing photos with Apple TV 2?

I have an old Apple TV, and load the family photos on the Apple TV itself. On the Apple TV 2, I know you can connect to MobileMe and Flickr.
Aside from MobileMe and Flickr, are there other options for viewing photos on the new Apple TV? Can you stream them from a Mac, or can you stream them from an iPhone/iPad?
If so, how is this initiated from the Apple TV, Mac, or iPhone/iPad?

You can stream from a Mac via itunes selection (iPhoto events or a folder) - it has 8GB of solid state temporary storage, but quite how things are cached/flushed from here is a bit of a mystery - you cannot say designate 2GB to hold photos or prioritise photos over other material.
Even rentals seem to flush if you've watched them and they haven't expired - relative fell asleep during a rental yesterday so i suggested she watched it today and it downloaded from scratch again, and the AppleTV hadn't had anything but music playing in the interim. Silly this really. There's a post on another section where someone used 17GB of their data allowance to watch a HD movie as it kept reloading!
Yes you can stream photos from iPod/iPad using Airplay, but to be honest i don't think ATV2 offers that much over ATV1 for photos (yet anyway), and in some ways it's inferior.
ATV2 is far more responsive/uses less power etc but I'm not convinced you get anything groundbeaking unless you have a lot of guests who could use it via Airplay from their iphones (and with ipads currently without cameras, photos would have to come from somewhere else in the first place).

Thanks for your participation and helping others enjoying speed like you !

    HI,
Which browser for Mac is the fastest one and why ?
Safari. But as with any browser, speed depends on what type of internet connection have, high speed being the fastest.
Have you found any tricks to make Safari faster ?
Empty the cache, Reset Safari, delete WebpageIcons.db from ~/Library/Safari
A lean machine runs faster and better performance. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*
Have you found any tricks to make Webkit, Firefox or Google Chrome faster ?
Same for any browser. Empty the cache often, clear the history.

  • Help! Advice for restoring photo library from an external hard drive

Here's the deal. My house was broken into today, and my desktop iMac was stolen, but I still have my external hard drive where I saved photo albums and my iPhoto library. I want to transfer that iPhoto library (from iPhoto 4) onto my MacBook Pro that has iPhoto 6. What is the proper way to install my old photo library and albums onto the laptop with the later version of iPhoto?
Thanks for the help in advance.

    Lori
Sorry to hear of your difficulties.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the back up to the Pictures Folder on the MBP and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.
Alternatively, you can leave the library where it is and hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the Library on the Back Up disk.

  • Can't view photo library in iMovie media pane

My photo library is on an external hard drive. I can open iPhoto and it works. I can't access the pictures through iMovie. I had the same problem with music until I put it back on the computers hard drive. I am very experienced with iMovie/iDVD/iPhoto. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Welcome to discussions!
Is your hard drive formatted correctly? To find out connect the external drive and then launch Disk Utility found in Applications/Utilities. Your external drive while show up in Disk Utility's side bar.
if it isn't Mac OS Extended-Journaled then click the 'Erase tab' at the top.
Select Mac OS Extended-Journaled formatting from the Volume Format menu.
Then click the oval Erase button at the lower right. That's all you need to do, except you will probably want to back up first as this will erase your drive.
If that isn't the problem, try deleting all of your Keywords from the iPhoto library.

  • Video Length for iCloud Photo Library beta

Does anyone know if there's a restriction in Video length as there was/is before the introduction of the iCloud Photo Library?

I believe it's only limited by your storage plan.

  • Aperture synchronisation with iphone randomise my photo library

I used to synchronise my photo in iPhoto from my MBP to an iPad and an iPhone 3GS. The library was correctly ordered by date.
I since switched to Aperture and a shinny new iPhone4S. Now, when I open the Photos App on my iPhone, the main Library list the photo totally at random,  other a 10 years period. Now way to find anything.
Inside other Albums, Photos are ordered chronogically, BUT when there are more than two versions for one Master, both are synchronised on the iPhone !
Then when I look at the list of Events, they are listed by name, when I would like them to be ordered by date (as are the matching projects within aperture)
Of course, in Aperture, photo are sorted per date

On Yosemite you can only run Aperture 3.6, but that will not run on Lion.
If you want to get Aperture running on your photo management macbook, restore it to the previous system from the last backup you made before the crash occurred, if you have a full Time Machine backup.  If you want to keep the Mac on Yosemite, try to restore the older system to an external drive and boot the Mac from that drive, when you want to work with Aperture 2.
Otherwise your only option would be to buy the upgrade to Aperture 3.6.

  • Can no longer view photo library, after power fail (during LR upload)

    Good day.
My computer power failed during a LR3, beta2 upload.
After restarting, I can no longer see any of the images in my library (~50k images) that were not part of the upload...but they are still there.  In the 'grid' screen, gray boxes appear, but instead of images within those gray boxes, I see lighter gray portrait/landscape rectangles.
I'm certain that the images are there, but I can only see the images if I am in the 'develop' window, 1 image at a time.
I am hesitant to reinstall lightroom, as I do not want to loose my LR catalog (and have not backed up in a bit...yes yes, I know).
Any help would be greatly appreciated*
    Thanks!

Those are the classic symptoms of a corrupted preview cache. There is a folder named <whatever>previews.lrdata that lives next to your lightroom catalogue which is named <whatever>.lrcat. Delete the .lrdata folder (and all its sub-folders) (but NOT the catalogue file!) and restart lightroom. It will rebuild your preview cache, and all will be well.

  • When browsing for photos, why does it not recognize the most recent iPhoto photos?

Whether I'm browsing for a photo to upload to a website, or to put into a word document and use the "Photo" directory which looks at my iPhoto photos it doesn't seem to register photos that I've put into iPhoto recently. I'm not sure if there's a way to "refresh" this directory or not, and there's no exact time that I've been able to recognize where the photos are available through this browser. It's kind of annoying, as I'm using iPhoto to manage all my photos.
    Anyone run in to this?

You can't and shouldn't access image files inside the library via the Finder.  The following is from a post by Terence Devlin on accessing photos for use outside of iPhoto.  It's the definitive treatise on the subject.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from
MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility
                                                      Karelia iMedia Browser
         Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Adding 'discription' space when viewing photo's in my 'Gallery'

I've posted several albums in my 'Gallery'. Until today I hadn't really worried about the description of any photo in any album. Today I added a descriptions to all the photos in one album.
Now when I go to my "Gallery" on the web and bring a photo up, then click on the 'I'...what I see in my description box is about half of what I wrote. Unlike the the text entered in the 'description box' before I published the album I'm unable to scroll when I view it on the web so about half (more or less) of what I wrote is worthless. Is there any way to enlarge the viewing box in my web "Gallery" so the complete description shows?... or be able to scroll after getting to that site?

    HEY--
You're not alone. The same thing is happening to me. This is what happened: First, my computer had too many photos on iPhoto, and I couldn't download anymore, (I have a G5 and lots of memory too but it didn't matter since I have tons of pictures)and my computer would say my start-up disk was full. I tried to delete some images to no avail. So I decided to buy another hard drive. I wanted to use that one for my photo library rather than the first hard drive, so I had enough room to work with.
I still couldn't download photos to it, since iPhoto was still on my first hard drive. So, I tried moving iPhoto to my second hard drive by dragging it and placing it there. It asked where my library was, so I directed it to the location I thought it was in my Pictures folder.
This is when things started getting mixed up. It no longer was backing up my iPhoto library to my Pictures folder. Whenever it would ask me to update my thumbnail cache, it started substituing dashed lines instead of my photos in its place. Little by little, this was happening. I could still download new photos into my iPhoto Library, but some photos from the past were getting corrupted and I couldn't salvage them or see them in any way, other than the dashed lines.
Recently, I have had two weddings to edit, and I cannot see the photos for the reception of one of them after I updated the thumbnail cache again. I thought it would bring my photos back, but rahter it made them so I can't see them!
I have read the other posts about this same issue, and I am about to just take my computer into MacDocs, but rather I'd like assistance here if possible since I need this taken care of, and I pay $100 every year for MacPro, and noone was available there to help me!!!
Please... any help would be appreciated. I too nervous to move anything else, and I would like some REAL help to this issue.
    Thank you in advance!

  • HT204414 How to import both iPhoto and Aperture library to iCloud Photo Library (Photos app)

    Hi all,
Based on the article here (Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support) has anyone tried to bring both an iPhoto and Aperture library into iCloud Photo Library so that both libraries are available as one in iCloud and form the one Photos app library rather than being seen as separate libraries. I don't want the two separated as I have 200GB's of space in iCloud which is plenty to hold the two's collective space of about 40GB's.
It seems as though the procedure is pretty simple.
First of all set one of your libraries as the System Photo Library, this will happen naturally with setting up Photos app for the first time. I chose iPhoto as the original library.
Let this library upload all it's photo's to iCloud over a few minutes, hours, days etc.
When finished, enter your other library by closing Photos app and reopening while holding down the Option key (usually Alt). In this case I now opened the Aperture library that it had found.
Under Preferences > iCloud set this library as the System Photo Library and in turn it will have the ability to upload to iCloud.
When it's finished I suppose you will have both iPhoto AND Aperture pictures in the one iCloud Photo Library.
At least I hope the above makes sense.
Anybody already tried this with good / bad results, let us know here.

found it here  - 'If you designate a new library as the System Photo Library and then turn on iCloud Photo Library, the photos and videos in the new library will merge with those already in your iCloud Photo Library. If you want to keep the contents of your photo libraries separate, don’t turn on iCloud Photo Library for more than one library in Photos.'
That bit seems clear. You can merge photos from different libraries by making them 'designated' first  .
BUT  this means that Photos app only shows you library A , or library B, depending on which one you have opened , but Icloud library contains photos from Both library A and library B .
    is this correct ?
and if so, does it not get a but confusing ?!?

  • Viewing Photos on a Nano

I need some guidance as to where I am going wrong..
I have set iTunes to sync the photos from a folder I have set up for my Nano, it tells me it is syncing the pics etc..
But how do I view them on my Nano?? Under "Photos" I only have "Slideshow Settings". I cant seem to find any option for viewing photos or for starting a slideshow.
Like I said, transferring the photos to the Nano isnt a problem, its viewing them thats the issue.
I have read throught the first 40 pages on here and watched the video tutorial etc, but none of them show how to view!!
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Mark

    Sorted it out!!!!!
It would appear that iTunes doesnt bother looking at the memory used up by photos when it shows the available space on the Nano. It performs the syncing of the photos with iTunes, but until there is more space available than the initial folder size you are trying to sync it wont complete the syncing by transferring them to the Nano.
I have just deleted some songs off and for some reason it then completed the sycning and transferred the pics to the Nano.
Now I have more menu options under "Photos" and I can view the pictures!!
    Thanks
