Question - Aperture Preview Settings

I import RAW photo files from my Canon S95 camera into Aperture 3.1.2, then touch them up a little (sharpen, straighten, correct lens distortion).  I have read that the Aperture screen display of the newly-created Versions is influenced by the settings in Preferences/Preview.  But do these Preview Quality and Preview Compression settings *also* affect the JPEG's I create when I perform the Export Version function ?  I want to convert the touched-up RAW master files into the highest-quality JPEG's possible.  At the same time I was hoping to shrink the amount of hard drive space gobbled up by these previews.  Can I lower the Preview quality and still have high-quality JPEG exports?

Where did you read this?

No, they do not in any way, as long as you use an "Export" command and do not "export" by dragging from the Browser.

"touched-up RAW master files" are, in Aperture, Version.  Use "File→Export→Version ... " and specify whatever you want in an Export Preset.

You can delete all of your Previews and still export Versions.  The Preview settings have nothing to do with the export settings.
The User Manual page on Previews is a bit of a slog, but will answer -- iirc -- all of your questions.  (If it doesn't, sorry -- I'm on a connection to slow to double-check links.)

  • Preview settings

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out best preview settings. I have a mbp with a display of 1440 x 900. When in my office, I have mbp hooked up to 24" display with 1920 x 1200. When in office, masters are on ext. HD and I view them solely on 24" display. So when I take my mbp out of office, I'm relying on previews in my aperture lib. I have preview setting in Aperture set to 1900 x 1900 and 10 for quality. So my question is, do i need that resolution if I'm only using previews for mbp etc. Sort of a convoluted question , but I hope someone can answer. Btw, I did a serch and did not find an answer.
    Thank you.
    John

The usual suggestion is to set it the same as your main display, which is indicated by an asterisk next to the resolution in the preview settings preference. Previews are also used by other applications, so consider what resolution you need if using them in this way outside of Aperture, as they will be used regardless of which monitor you are using. The lowest setting appears to be 1280x1280, which should cover your current usage.
EDIT: Also bear in mind that previews can be regenerated when you want so you can change this setting in the future and rebuild the previews with your new setting.

  • Preview settings for shared librarys

I have setup my Aperture 3.02 library in my /users/shared folder and am accessing it on my macbook pro and iMac with no problems. My question is in regards to the preview settings on both computers. should they both be the same? The settings are set to x2560 on my imac and x1440 on the macbook pro to match their individual screen resolutions. Does it matter which computer I do the import on as to which preview size gets used?
    Thanks!

The preview will get rendered by whichever machine last touched the version... (unless you have "automatically generate previews" turned off). At any point you can force a preview to update on one machine or the other.
You might want to consider using referenced masters, with the images setup in the shared folder, and having 2 different libraries. (A working library on the imac, and a portable library that is project by project and gets merged into the imac library.

Hello! I'm using Aperture with Efex plugins and notice, what when I saving result in plugin and go back to aperture, preview mode is going to grey color and not working until I reboot Aperture. What is intresting - in full screen mode everything works fine. Did you saw this problem?

It seems there's a workaround here:

  • Aperture Import Settings Panels crashes.

The Aperture Import Settings panel crashes and it show you only info from the moment
you choose a location on a server called "Pictures" (same Name as the "Pictures" folder in the user folder in my case). The choose options stays on "choose" and if you click "Import Selected" you loose from now on all the option on the import on the next start of the app and even after reboot you will never have any options on the import panel. If i choose any other folder not named "Pictures" all works fine.
It seemed to me like a bug.

  • Lost three of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings

I've come across a frustrating problem. I have lost the ability to choose three of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings.
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Main -- OK -
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview -- not available
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Full-Screen -- not available
    • Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-Raw -- not available
I reinstalled Final Cut Studio 2 hoping that returning to Final Cut 6 would resolve the issue but it did not.
    Any suggestions?

Partial solution, if I remove my AJA KonaLH software and reboot my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings return. I tried re-installing AJAKonaLH6.0.2, 6.5 & 7.0 and in every case 3 of my Digital Cinema Desktop Preview settings would disappear. Now I suspect it was an update from Apple.

  • Some Aperture Previews Missing in Mail Chooser

I am running Aperture 3.2.3 with the current version of Lion. Tonight I wanted to e-mail some pictures via the Mail app. In the photo chooser in the Mail app, however, not all of the Aperture previews show up. For the particular project from which I wanted choose the pictures to send, some, but not all previews appear in the chooser. The missing previews were neither the first, nor the last, pictures added to the project. In Aperture preferences, "always" share with iLife and iWork is checked. Any idea why some pictures, but not all, would show up in the mail photo chooser?

I have the same problem, failing to receive pdf attachments intermittently using Mail 5.2 running OS X 10.7.3 (Lion), and not being counted among the attachments
Two times where I'm aware it happened, the sender had replied and included the attachments I had sent in my original message, and I'm wondering if those attachments somehow led to their own attachments not displaying and not even being counted in the e-mail window.  "3 Attachments, 317 KB" displayed, but those were my three; clicking the "Save" drop-down menu listed only those 3 attachments of mine.  In one case, I had them resend their attachments as a new e-mail, and that worked.  Their 2 attachments totalled 941 KB, so Mail missed rather a lot by displaying just 317 KB.

Hello guys, I have a question about Preview - How do you loop a slideshow?

Had the "loop" feature using Preview in 10.4.11; upgaded to 10.5.8 and it's gone. Don't you have to work at "Taking" it away? Makes no sense. Now you have to look for a third market for something that was included in Preview since the first version was launched.  ....I don't get this one.

  • Possible for iPhoto to remove referenced Aperture previews that I deleted?

Maybe I've already gone down the wrong path here, but I've been using Aperture until iPhoto 09. I really want to face and geo tag my photos, so I'm sharing my Aperture previews with iPhoto.
Last night, I decided to clean out a lot of my junk shots because I shoot RAW and am running out of space. I figured iPhoto would be smart enough to auto-remove those files from the library, but... of course it did not.
Now, I have hundreds of photos scattered across multiple events that are gone. iPhoto thinks they're still there, still showing the small icon for each image. When it tries to reference the bigger version, I get the popup saying that it can't locate the original.
Any suggestions on how to clean up this mess? I know I could just delete the iPhoto library and start over, but I've already spent HOURS face tagging, and would hate to lose all of that information.
    Thanks!

I find this to be a huge flaw in iphoto. I deleted a large group of original duplicate thumbnails of some pics that I had that iphoto had imported. Now iphoto faces in littered with thumbnails of missing pics. It will take hours to manually look for and then delete these entries. If you delete the original pictures on your drive, iphoto should be able to re-index and remove the missing files. It can do this if forced by holding down command option when starting and choosing to rebuild, BUT this does NOT rebuild the 'faces' lists. I had spend allot of time manually selecting a long list of multiple faces lists. Not only that, but when you manually delete these empty faces pictures you have to open each one to see if it then shows "not found" and then close it and then delete the icon to get rid of it. In the main list of pics you can at least hit the delete key on the full size pics as you scroll them. It is very tedious. Now you might say, well just delete the iphoto pics first instead of the originals, but that doesn't work, because there is no sub directory within the "faces" lists to remove in batch. It;'s just a mess to manage and do maintenance on. In short the "faces" lists do NOT have much control or sync once you set them up and tag them manually which severely limits their usefulness.

  • Mail preview settings

For some reason my Mail previews only appear on the right hand site.
Bevore they apperared below, the way I am used to. But for some reason I do not manage to change it back to the old settings.

Thank you to everybody. Restarting is definitely solved the problem. Was it bug?

  • DNxHD 185x Sequence preview settings

Working with DNxHD 185x (1920x1080 25p) codec, I realized that when I create a new sequence dropping one clip to new element button, the new sequence's preview settings are DNxHD 120 (1920x1080 25p). Any idea why? I don't understand why premiere changes the preview settings to a lower quality codec.

No idea.  But whenever 'automatic' behavior doesn't produce the desired results, you can always do things manually.

  • Aperture previews blacked out

Ever since I had to have my hard drive replaced and restored from my Time capsule Backup I have numerous Aperture previews that either appear in black, red hazy lines or incorrect preview pic.  I have run the repair functions and tried to right click and either update or generate preview but nothing seems to work.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Are your originals raw files and have you tried to reprocess the originals? From the main menu: Photos > Reprocess original? And tried to recreate the Thumbnails, not the previews?
Do the originals show the same corruption? Have you tried to export the originals and looked at them in the Finder?
Is your library referenced or managed, and if referenced, are the originals on the same drive as the library?

  • How can I retrieve Aperture Previews and Thumbnails directly after a corrupt hard drive corrupted Masters?

I have several old albums where JPG's were apparently corrupted on an old striped RAID.
Aperture still shows the previews (quite large, thankfully) for these old images.
But when Aperture tries to refresh the preview, the previews mimic the corrupt masters.  To stop the bleeding, so to speak, I renamed my Master directory so Aperture doesn't update previews for these corrupt JPGs.  However, I'd really like to save these previews, even if not at full resolution. Some folders
How can I retrieve Aperture Previews and Thumbnails for these items?
    My process so far:
    1) Show package contents on Aperture Library.
    2) Navigate to Previews
         - some directories are here, some are missing
         - for those that are here, back up elsewhere and mission accomplished
         - for those that are missing, try to recover the thumbnails at least...
    3) Navigate to Thumbnails
         - Lots more directories here. Likely the ones I'm looking for. (but they have strange hash names, so it's hard to say)
         - BUT, they only show large "AP.Thumbnails" files, no separate image file
The big answer I'm looking for... How to recover images missing from Preview directory and/or AP.Thumbnails files? (short of taking screenshots)

It would be nice to know your Aperture and OS version, there have been changes over the years.
The big answer I'm looking for... How to recover images missing from Preview directory and/or AP.Thumbnails files? (short of taking screenshots)
If you open the library in Aperture you can drag the preview images out of the browser and place them in a folder on your HD.  If you cannot open the library then you will have to resort to going into the library package and rooting around.  There was a big  change with the library layout from Aperture 2 to 3 so knowing the version would really help here.

  • Where are the Aperture Previews?

I'm at a loss trying to work out why my Aperture preview pics are not coming up as available jpeg files in "Photos".  In other words, the files used by other apps such as Mail, iTunes, etc.  If I try to send an email and add a picture only a very outdated (and empty) iPhoto folder appears as an option.  What happened to the Aperture previews that worked just fine until I migrated to iCloud (may or may not be related but the problem started on the same day)?  I have the preview boxes checked in Aperture Preferences.  I have done all of the Aperture First Aid options such as rebuild and restore.  I have deleted and updated the previews using the instructions provided in the Aperture User Manual and still nothing.  I even rebuilt a new library using my externally saved backup vault.  Nothing works.  It's like, for lack of better wording, the computer refuses to share Aperture previews with any other application.  I can use Aperture itself just fine to import, edit, save files, I just cannot use the previews of them in Mail, Desktop, iTunes, etc.  When I do a generate previews the activity window shows all 7,000 previews being generated but where are they and why are they not available to other apps?
Also, even though the new iCloud Photostream is turned on and working just fine on my ATV2, iPad 1 and iPhone I cannot get it to work on my iMac.  I check the photostream box in System Pref/iCloud and Aperture but after a slight pause the box goes unchecked by itself.  All software has been confirmed the latest available.
I appreciate any suggestions as I am at a loss on what to do next other then a full Aperture reinstall which I really do not want to do from DVD and numerous online updates unless my only option.   Even with a vault backup I am still nervous of losing 7000 pics.   Even then I still need to use the vault to recreate a new library so if the problem is somehow hidden within the vault a reinstall likely would not help either (I believe).   If that is the case (a corrupted vault), what do I do then?
    Many Thanks
    Mark

    Mac OS X (10.6.3)
Is your signature correct, then? I'd recommend to upgrade to 10.6.8.
I check the photostream box in System Pref/iCloud and Aperture but after a slight pause the box goes unchecked by itself.
You seem to be using iPhoto and Aperture alternately. You can share your Photo Stream only with one of these Applications. Maybe this is causing the stream to automatically beeing switched off. This has been reported by others. Search for other threads with "photo stream turning off" in the iCloud Forum.
I have done all of the Aperture First Aid options such as rebuild and restore.  I have deleted and updated the previews using the instructions provided in the Aperture User Manual and still nothing.  I even rebuilt a new library using my externally saved backup vault.
Have you tried to remove your Aperture Preference file? This file tells the Media Browser where the Aperture Library is located. If you have not done so already:
    Quit Aperture
Open your user Library (inside your Home Folder) in the Finder and navigate to the "Preferences" folder.
Move your preferences file Library->Preferences-> com.apple.Aperture.plist to the desktop
Restart Aperture and direct it to your Aperture Library. Quit Aperture again.
Try to use the Media Browser from the System Preferences by setting your Desktop Picture.

  • Questions on preview quality and where Aperture uses them

I have been reading Apple's Aperture articles about preview quality and how Aperture shares images with the outside world. I had always assumed that the full quality image in Aperture was used for printing, exporting and sharing, but it seems that, at least for sharing, it is the preview that Aperture creates that is shared.
I have just increased the quality of the previews that Aperture generates from 5 to 9 and forced Aperture to re-render all previews. It seems to me that the images on screen and in slide shows and other iLife documents, are now much clearer and brighter (the downside of this is that my Aperture library file has grown by 4 gigabytes).
This leads me to ask four questions about Aperture and preview use (if I may?).
Is a jpeg on a high setting (9) visibly better than one on a medium setting (5), or am I being led to see what I expect to see?
Apart from editing, slideshows and iLife and iWork documents, in what situations does Aperture use previews where high or low quality might make a difference?
Does Aperture use previews to compile photo books? If so, does the quality of the preview affect the quality of the final printed book?
Is it possible to set Aperture to produce high quality previews for images above a certain star rating and low quality previews for the rest?
Thanks for any answers you may have.
    Alasdair

Previews are used within Aperture to quickly show an image in the main viewer before the master has been fully loaded, they are also used to see the referenced masters even if the external location is not available at that moment (not adjustments can be done then, but at least you can see the image)
Previews are used outside Aperture to share the images with adjustments without exporting every image. It comes in handy that you can drag an image from Aperture's browser to another app or the desktop (what you get there is the preview). iMovie or other iApps use previews, the bigger size and quality the better quality you'll get.
Once you set up the size and quality of the previews in Aperture's Preferences the previews are created with those settings. I guess you could lower the settings, in the browser select the images you don't need big previews, ctrl+click and 'update preview' to force create low res previews for those. After that you can put the settings back. But if you do any change to those images the previews will be updated. Certainly I don't see the point of having different previews, do some test find the settings that work best for you and keep it like that.
Turn automatic previews off and create manually the previews you need, I have a smart album with images rated 3 or more stars and I use it to select and create previews manually to those images.
