Question before upgrading - can I import my ver. 6 catalog?

Does anyone know or have experience importing their version 6 catalog into version 12? Thanks.

you might, but you also want to bear in mind that whenever there is a new update available there are bugs, and people have problems. and that this is the place people come to find out solutions/ask about their problems - people without problems dont generally come and talk about them.

  • Can Lightroom import other people's catalogs?

It seems that a powerful tool like Lightroom (on top of a powerful Adobe suite) should allow a developer to import a client's catalog from Photoshop Elements on an external hard drive. Everything I've read in the support and forums indicate I need to have Photoshop Elements installed on my own machine, and that reading off a network drive is not possible.

Yes, Lightroom can import a Photoshop Elements catalog, but there are restrictions.
Let me know if there are questions that this does not answer:

  • Question before upgrading: connectivity with computers running leopard?

I am looking to upgrade one of my computers to snow leopard, but I cannot yet upgrade the other because I'll need it to run CS3 and a few other media programs that have not been updated by SONY. Before doing anything reckless, I wanted to make sure that there are no issues transferring files between computers running different OS's. It might seem like a silly question but I figured better safe than sorry. Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's a silly question, sorry - mainly because your computers and software are unique in their configuration and your workflow, skills etc. just add to that. No one can help you make sure you won't have issues. Do you share small or big files? What is a big file? Do your file names use special characters? Is your network old, new or somewhere in between?
If you want to be safe on your terms, don't do anything...who knows what could happen, other than to comment anecdotally.
File sharing is typically mundane and trouble-free, but again, your situation can be ready to go or ready to break, and making any change might push it over the edge.

  • 2 Back up Questions Before Upgrading - Please

    Before going to 10.4.8 -
I have an external hard drive with 3 partitions. Each partition has a Disc Utility bootable clone of one of my Macs (all G4's). Each clone is about 6 weeks old and I'd like to make them current (and most certainly bootable) before updating to 10.4.8, just in case.
    So, here's my 2 questions:
    1. Do I erase each partition before doing the new clone, OR do I simply click on Restore in Disc Utility, put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and then eecute the Restore command letting Disc Utility write over the existing clones, OR do I click on Restore and put the Source and Desitination volumes in the correct panes and go letting it write over the existing clones but check the "Erase Destination" box first?
    2. In case I have issues with 10.4.8 that I can't troubleshoot, and I need to go back, do I do a clean install of 10.4 and then clone back, or what is the exact procedure to getting a Mac back to its prior state with all prefernces and data and so forth the same as before (and of course back to an earlier OS) from a clone? I'd really like to get some detailed instructions on how to do this so I can print them out ahead of time.
    Thanks in advance, and Cheers!

    Hi
There have been problems with individual files in the cloning process on some Macs. Once this occurs you will find that all cloning utilities choke on the same file. Retrospect will skip the file but others will just stop. If you see the FAQ on the SuperDuper! page you will see how you can exclude a folder from the clone, and avoid the problem. If you do not use the Dutch localisation of iTunes I would also try dragging the offending folder to the Desktop, launch iTunes and check that it is working properly, and if everything is ok delete the folder. Your clone should then go without problem.
I also see that you have multiple threads running about this problem, with different information on each thread. This is not helpful! If you have Retrospect then you are best off using that app to achieve what you want. It is by far the most sophisticated backup app, and only need be avoided by those who crave simplicity.
Edit: As an addendum to that, Retrospect, SuperDuper!, SilverKeeper and other cloning apps can update your clones very quickly (SuperDuper! typically takes 10 minutes to update my clone). Disk Utility on the other hand does not have this ability. You would need to do a fresh clone each time you use it, and that takes a great deal longer (depending on your Mac and data 1½-2 hours is normal.

  • Question before upgrading to Snow

    Hi,
I am finally going to upgrade (mainly so I can continue to use iCal and sync, etc.). I have heard that some of my printers may no longer work once I upgrade.
Is that true? And are there other things that go awry with upgrade such as software programs like Office 2011 and Adobe CS5 programs?
Finally, is there a central document available where I can view what's known to be a hazard prior to upgrading?
    Thanks.

    Hello c:
    In order….
I have heard that some of my printers may no longer work once I upgrade.
    Is that true?
    Supported printers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669
And are there other things that go awry with upgrade such as software programs like Office 2011 and Adobe CS5 programs?
Office 2004 works fine…theer is no reason why Office 2011 will not work. Search these forums for information about the Adobe program (the manufacturer's web site should give you what you need to know).
Finally, is there a central document available where I can view what's known to be a hazard prior to upgrading?
No, to my knowledge. That sort of document would be flawed anyhow, as each system is a bit different.

P.S. I have been running OS X 10.6.7 since its release with no problems at all.

  • Questions before upgrading

I am currently using 10.5.6 and am thinking of upgrading though I want to know the following:
1.) How stable is the most recent version of Snow Leopard, whatever that is?
2.) Are there lots of issues with getting Snow Leopard to work with printers, scanners, and other software that worked in Leopard?
    Thanks.

1.) For myself and many others, it is rock solid, and lightning fast. Your experience will differ, however, as all experiences do. There is no end all be all answer to your question, but I am throwing in my experience to say, it has been smooth as silk.
2.) It is becoming the standard, at least it seems as much when browsing software databases, that an application be compatible with Snow Leopard this late after release. I myself have had no problems at all, and any and all "major" software developers will most likely have already made that switch. And, I have never met a printer my Macbook pro couldn't handle.

  • Can't access old ver. 9, 11 & 13 clips after Windows upgrade

In Sept. 2014 I downloaded PE 13 from B&H, worked fine and was able to access old PE9 & PE11 clips.  In Dec. 2014 had problems with Wind. 7 Home Ed. and had to upgrade to 8.1 (decided on Pro).  Installed 8.1 Pro end of Dec. 2014 and bought PE 13 DVD from B&H to reinstall after I backed up my hard drive.  Problem after install of 8/1 Pro and installing PE13 from DVD I can't access and restore old clips from 9, 11 & 13.  Tried everything I can think of....any suggestions PLEASE!

Very good, I completely understand.  Please understand "I am not a computer geek!"
With the old computer system, you have Premiere Elements 9, 11, and 13 projects. And, you import media into each and see thumbnails for each of your imports in the project media area of the program (in version 11 and 13, called Project Assets).  CORRECT!  Please as we go forward I have the PE 13 that was downloaded from B&H and worked perfectly with my previous assets in PE 9 & 11.
When you go to open a project in one of these programs and go to the project media area, do the source media thumbnails still show as before with image in the thumbnail? Or does the thumbnail have a display of circular arrows? If the present as before, can you drag the file from the project media area to the Timeline? If you cannot, it that the problem? NO!  (First info is when I set up my new PE 13 after copying all data to a 1T desk drive and loaded Windows 8.1 Pro to replace my Windows 7 Home Edition, I set up the PE 13 and used 64 bit as suggested.)  NOW...When I locate my previous Project Assets on the 1T drive they show as "red blocks" with a play arrow in them where previously were thumbnails, but I can't retrieve them.  As such there is nothing to add to the timeline.  Last night I added to the NEW PE 13 a 22 min program I'm working on.  I have all those assets, thumbnails and everything is working as wonderfully as it did in 9, 11 and downloaded 13.
Now in response to a previous question you asked:
    1. When you open Premiere Elements 13 Expert workspace, go to Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime, do you see a list of presets when you explore
the Presets" field there?  NO.... I can get to /Computer but there is no QuickTime there!  I did download QuickTime yesterday after your suggestion.
    2. You wrote
Restarted PE13 and received the message "The selected file cannot be played becuse your system does not have the required compresser/decompresser (codec) installed.
Where are you getting the selected file---- from Premiere Elements 13 Expert workspace Project Assets to where it was imported originally from a hard drive save location?
Or other? What is the specific full name of one of these files that is giving the error message?
With everything I've been trying, I'll have to recreate this series of events to answer directly.
When you did the switch from Windows 7 Home to Windows 8.1, did you go 64 bit to 64 bit or 32 bit to 64 bit in operating system?  Help me with a way to determine what the bit was on 9 & 11!
Were two separate computers involved or did you manage to change the operating all on one computer?  All on one Computer
The major focus for me right now is to make sure I know what file triggers the ".....not have the required compressoer/decompressor (codec)"? And to know that
you are in the Premiere Elements 13 Editor and not the Organizer 13 workspace.  Help me understand!!!!  I know the difference between "Add Media", "Project Assets", "Organizer", "Editor" and "Workspace".  But "Project Assets" and "Workspace" are part of "Editor", so I don't understand your question.

  • Can more than 1 ver of FF be installed at the same? If so, How?

Can more than 1 ver of FF be installed at the same time? I currently have FF 3.x installed, and want to migrate to the newest FF, but before I do, I need to see which of my add-ons are no longer needed due to new intrinsic FF features, and if other add-ons are compatible. I simply need to have the features of certain add-ons, and if the new FF does not have the features I need, and the add-ons that give me those features are not compatible with the new version, then I simply can't upgrade. At some point I will write a detailed document stating features that I believe should be built into FF, but until then, perhaps a new Mozilla Migration Wizard program should be created. It would be able to scan a person's current installation, add-ons and all, and provide a report on which add-ons are compatible with the version the person wishes to upgrade to, and which are not, and check online to see if updates for the incompatible add-ons are available. The Mozilla Migration Wizard should also tell the user which add-ons are obsolete because their functions are built into the newer version of FF. But back to the question at hand: Can more than 1 ver of FF be installed at the same time? If so, is there a special procedure to follow? Will trying to install a second version corrupt my currently installed version? I hope a dual installation is possible because it will help me to transition to the newest FF as smoothly as possible, and it may also provide me with insight to suggest new features, procedures, functionality, utility type programs, and such.
    Thank you for your time.
I hope to hear from you soon.

  • Sounds weird... but can I import a folder without actually importing?

So I've been used to using Picasa on my PC but recently bought a MacBook Pro and wanted to start using iPhoto. When I selected to import one of the directories of family photos the size of my iPhoto library quickly jumped to over 40gb (about 10,000 photos). When I would import using Picasa it would create a preview of each image that it would store in it's library, but otherwise it would only add exif data to the library and so my picasa library with over 30k photos is only about 2gb.
My question therefore is, can I import photos without actually having iPhoto add the raw data of the photo to it's library. My family photos are stored on a server in my office, that is RAIDed and backed up to offsite storage daily. The last thing I want to do is have another copy sitting on my Mac.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Warwick

Yes, but I don't recommend it.
    *How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
    *What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
    *Some things to consider:*
    1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
    4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
    My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) :
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
