Question for Black Knight at Distorted Audio

Dear Black Knight:
Would you please go back to the Distorted Audio discussion and answer the last question that I posted there regarding your comments:  "With even just a small investment in these things you can improve the quality of your recorded sound by tons! purchasing a Class-A Preamp ($100ish per channel) will dramatically clear up the sound and lower the noise floor, so when you record something at -20 and want to bring it up.. it won't have a lot of garbage in the signal."
I would value your advice on my questions.  Thanks
Barb.

Sure I will go look, my apologies

  • Question for Apple / Re: RME & Distorted Audio

    Hi,
I am curious as to wether Apple is aware of the problems with RME users and QuickTime 7 (there are previous posts on this subject).
Is a workaround planned / being worked on?
QT7 compatibility is important for my business and it would be nice to know wether this issue is going to be resolved or not (so at least I (and others) would know wether or not to migrate to another format)
    Thank You

I also have a rme Hammerfall DSP Multiface and have audio problems
    please fix!!!!

  • Fix for black/gray screen/no audio with purchased content issue

Ok, here's what finally worked for me:
    1. Download the 10.6.4 Combo Updater (using Safari on Apple's support pages, not Software Update)
    2. Download the iTunes 9.2 installer (using Safari on Apple's support pages, not Software Update)
    3. Delete iTunes application
    4. Delete AppleMobileDevice.kext from /Library/Extensions
    5. Run 10.6.4 Combo Updater and restart
    6. Run iTunes 9.2 installer (no restart needed)
I can FINALLY play all of my purchased content, no gray screens, no missing audio. Hope this helps others!

Dan, I followed your suggestion to the letter but it didn't work for me. Is it possible that you left a step out?
    Thanks in advance...

  • Problems watching movies on iTunes -- lagging video, distorted audio

Hello. I have a black MacBook running Mac OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard) and iTunes 9.0.2, and I'm having some problems. It's been going on for a few weeks now, and is worse some days than others, but the overall trend has been downward, so I wanted to try to get some help before it gets any worse.
The problem occurs when I try to watch movies on iTunes. I haven't had any problems with any other aspect of iTunes, although I don't really use any other aspects of iTunes at the moment besides the iTunes Store (I don't listen to music through iTunes or anything). Anyways, here's the problem:
Sometimes, when I'm watching a movie on iTunes, it will randomly (or seemingly randomly) glitch on me. I use the general term "glitch" here because the problem can manifest itself in one of a few different ways:
1.) The picture will freeze for a quick moment (less than a second usually) and skip forward real quick to catch up, and then sometimes, after it does this, it will go back to normal and keep playing the movie correctly. Other times after it does this, however, it will continue playing the movie, but with lagging video. When I say "lagging video", I mean that the video is slowed down, as if in slow motion. The audio remains normal. This only seems to happen in full screen mode (although I don't really watch movies any other way), so when it happens, I can generally hit escape to go back to regular viewing mode and it will fix itself, although sometimes I have to quit out of iTunes and reopen it.
2.) On rare occasions, instead of the video lagging problem, the picture will freeze all together, and if I recall correctly, the application always freezes with it.
3.) Less commonly than the video problem, the audio will become distorted. This usually occurs separately from the video issue, but can occur simultaneously as well. When this happens, the audio gets really scratchy and distorted, as if it was being filtered through a low quality children's boom box microphone. iek the video problem, this problem occurs randomly in the middle of watching the movie, but unlike the video problem, this problem persists after I quit out of iTunes. Quitting iTunes does not fix the problem in this case, unlike with the video lagging. When I quit iTunes, the distorted audio remains an issue an any application I use, and I have to wait awhile for it to go away on its own. So, unlike the video lagging, this audio issue seems to exist outside of iTunes, although it always starts with iTunes.
Can anyone help me figure out what is going on here? I've looked for patterns in other applications that are open during the times these problems occur, but haven't found any. I do have Norton AntiVirus installed on my computer, and I did notice awhile ago that any time I try to watch a movie on iTunes while I have a virus scan going on, I always get a glitch on iTunes, so I stopped running those two applications at the same time a long time ago, but I still have the problem. Should I try reinstalling iTunes? If I do this, will I lose any of the music or movies or apps that are in iTunes? I would assume not, but I just want to make sure I don't need to back anything up if I want to reinstall iTunes.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Not sure why this question is labeled as "answered" since there are no answers in the thread?
I'm having the same issue with the extremely distorted audio track on itunes video. It's worst on the speech, which is hard to hear, garbled, a lot of scratchy noise overtop of it; the music tracks are somewhat better (and much much louder). This started a bit ago and was intermittent at first, now very bad, can;t get rid of it.
I have a lot of itunes video, and since it is all protected, to my knowledge it is not playable through any other player... so this is a real problem. Reinstalling itunes (9.2.1) did not help. Sometimes VLC also distorts sound (on other video), more often that's fine but itunes is not.
I would love to have a solution to this-- my video library is not much use.

  • Fixing Distorted Audio

    Hello,
I am working on a project for which I received the source media digitized into a firewire drive. Once I imported that media into FCP, I discovered that the audio in one of my interview subjects' footage clipped at certain points, making some of his words sound distorted - I am unsure if the audio was originally recorded as such by the sound tech, or whether it was captured at an incorrect setting by the person who digitized the media. Bottom line is, the audio on one of my interviews *****, I have no access to the master tapes (reshooting is not an option), and I would like to be able to salvage some of the soundbites in question.
I am aware that it's near impossible to get rid of distortion once it's been recorded or digitized - does anyone know of a certain combination of FCP filters which would, at the very least, help me minimize the distorted audio?
    Thanks in advance.

If the clips were captured as DV clips via firewire, then the person who captured is in the clear. The fault in that case would be the shooter's.
You might take one of the clips into Soundtrack Pro and look closely at the waveform to see if you can pin down the distorted parts. There's not much you can do about it, but you can at least confirm with your eyeballs that it's there and therefore unfixable. OTOH, if you see clean waveforms there, then . . . no I won't get your hopes up - it's not fixable.

  • 3 Questions to Consider When Purchasing Car Audio

If you’re looking to enhance the listening experience in your vehicle, you may want to consider upgrading your car audio components. There are many different options to do this, from a new radio to an entire sound system to provide you with unmatched acoustics and heart pounding bass. With all the choices you have, I know that upgrading your car audio equipment can seem like a daunting task, especially if you don’t know where to start. To help get you started, I’ve provided my top 3 questions to consider when looking into upgrading your vehicle's sound system.
Do You Need a Complete New System or Just a Few Upgrades?
It can be easy to get carried away when it comes to purchasing car audio equipment, especially with all of the choices and configurations out there. The costs can add up quickly if you’re looking to upgrade the entire sound system, but there are also many cost effective ways to improve your car audio performance.
You could start by just upgrading your car stereo. Buying a new car stereo will not only improve the appearance of your vehicle, but it may also provide you with better sound quality, as well as more features, all without breaking the bank. If you’re looking to just add MP3 playback capabilities but don’t want to upgrade to a brand new radio, you may consider an FM transmitter. This will allow you transmit your music through your car speakers while still using your existing car stereo.
What Will Fit In Your Car?
You will want to ensure that any car audio components you purchase fit in the same location as the stock components.
Car audio speakers come in a variety of sizes to accommodate different manufacturer specifications. Traditional speaker sizes are usually 6-1/2", 6" x 9", and 5-1/4", with many sizes in-between. These sizes refer to the diameter of the speaker, but you’ll also want to consider the speaker depth to make sure it will fit within the door panel or rear deck lid behind the seats.
If you're looking to add a subwoofer, it is highly recommended that a quality subwoofer enclosure be used. Traditionally, subwoofer enclosures can be placed in trunks or under seats if using in a pick-up truck. You’ll want to ensure you have enough room to place the enclosure according to how you want it to look. You can also purchase subwoofers that come already loaded in an enclosure.
For a new car stereo, you'll find that these usually come in two sizes; DIN (image top), and Double DIN (image bottom). DIN units are traditionally 7” wide, and 2” tall. Double DIN units are generally one single unit that is the same size or near the same size of two DIN units stacked together. Double DIN units often have a larger screen, and more features such as DVD enabled (Only when the vehicle is stopped and in Park) and GPS navigation. In addition to the car stereo, you will most likely need a Dash Installation Kit to ensure the car stereo fits properly in your vehicle.
What Kind of Sound Do You Want?
Deciding how you want your car audio to sound is crucial when it comes to choosing car audio components, especially if you’re purchasing any kind of speakers.
You'll want to consider the type of music you listen to when purchasing your upgraded car speakers, as different genres carry many different tones. By adding new speakers, you’ll hear cleaner bass and more clarity then you would’ve before with stock speakers. In addition to upgraded speakers, you may consider adding an amplifier. An amplifier will provide your system with enough juice to provide it with plenty of clean power. Using a 4 channel amplifier in conjunction with upgraded speakers will allow you to hear your music like never before.
If you enjoy the hit of loud, clean bass, you may consider adding a subwoofer to your car audio system. A subwoofer and a suitable mono amplifier will give you cleaner, sometimes heart-pounding bass. In addition to clean bass, you’ll hear the mid/low tones like you’ve never heard them before.
Now that you’ve added more power to your existing system, you want a way to contain that power. Sound deadening materials such as the Dynamat Xtreme Trunk Kit and Dynamat Xtreme Door Dampening Sheets help eliminate vibrations and rattles, while containing your audio inside of the vehicle. In addition to keeping your audio inside of the vehicle, it will help to keep road noise out of the vehicle for distortion free audio.
Upgrading your cars audio system can seem overwhelming, but with the right selections and proper research, it can make a world of difference to the listening experience you enjoy in your vehicle. Feel free to check out our vast selection of car audio equipment here. We’ve also got plenty of Blue Shirts and Geek Squad Autotech installers to help you pick out and install the perfect car audio system.

I've found some answers to my own questions....so will post them in case anyone else is having the same problems. I've found different web browsers will open the same media file in different ways....safari opens a video clip by opening up a new fullsize webpage window and having the videoclip (of whatever size) "embedded" within it whereas explorer will open up a seperate QT window just the size of the videoclip. The reason that I was having no audio on QT clips played within Safari or downloaded to my desktop (as well as no audio with the WMPlayer for Macs) is because some audio applications may change your computers audio settings to a sample rate that is to high for other applications to use. The solution is to change your audio output setting to 44100.0 Hz within the "Midi Setup".See an earlier post in this forum by Eric Urisoy called "Audio Not Working" for details.

  • CMYK values for black

I know 100% K is not the blackest black, and I know that there are color values that will get me the blackest black, I just misplaced my cheat sheet, and can't remember what they were. I thought sure I could find them through some forum searches, but no luck for the cmyk values.
    thanks for your input

Try opening a CMYK Photoshop file with the colour settings as you want them (gloss, newsprint, wotever). Click on the little squares at bottom left of the Foreground/Background sample at the bottom of the Toolbox so that they become black and white. With Info open, read off the CMYK values that Photoshop gives you for black. That way you'll get a pretty good dense black that suits the type of printing you're dealing with.
It's all a question of total ink density and how much undercover removal you want. And that all depends on the sort of paper you're going to be printing on.
Be careful though, if you want to put white lettering on a CMYK black area. If the lettering is small, you will probably need to make a non-overprinting 100%K trap so that the CMYK colours don't flood into the white letters.

  • Importing Alg Audio & Video with distorted audio, how to improve sound now.

Been using iMovie & Quicktime to import Analog A/V. This last project I imported the movie into iMovie. The sound has lots of echo and distortion. Can someone tell me what would be the best iLife program to use for audio correction.
Can you also help me with a jump start on some of the best quick corrections for distorted sound, echo & hiss. I would like to restore the audio as best as I can with the iLife programs.
For the record I am also interested in turning stereo audio into surround sound.
Help for my rookie self would be much appreciated as I am currently in a tight time crunch.
    Many thanks.
