Question for die hard apple fans about sharing media

I've had my iMac for about 8 months. I also have 3 windows PC's. What I love about the iMac is it works...in other words, I don't have the crashes and hangs that I get in Windows. I now use iMovie and I have read the many discussions about quality...and all I can say is my quality stinks when trying to share something via DVD from MiniDV tape. I can go right from tape to a DVD via a cheap DVD Player/burner under my TV and the quality is great, but going through the painful steps in iMovie doesn't seem to do the trick.
Since DVD's seem to be a thing of the past in the Apple world, can some of you tell me how you are doing the following:
1) Sharing an hour long movie created in iMovie with family and friends that have Internet but not mac - Privately - These are my personal home movies, I don't want them on a public site
2) Storing your creations for long term - and protect off-site - in other words, I want my kids to have copies of these when I am long gone
3) Watch your creations on your local TV (sounds like the "only" way to do that if you keep it all online is via Apple TV? Other ways?
The bottom line is I have these movie created in iMovie that I want to watch locally, share with family and protect for the long term.
I am sure these are already answered within many different discussions,but I am still not clear on the "best practice" (I know - it's subjective)

Die Hard AA Fan NOT HAPPY!

What is going on!
I have put up with delays in command execution and playback time when zooming in on multi-tracks.
I have purchased 10k rpm drives which have made some small headway but what do I find now????
Let me recap.
We had a client hire the studio for a few days but insisted on using Sony Vegas to track.
After picking ourselves up off the floor from rolling around in laughter - sure we hired him the studio and away he went.
Well I was pretty impressed with his use of Vegas and the speed in which he flew it.
But hey at the end of the day this is toy stuff compared to AA right?
Anyway he finished his tracking was impressed with the studio and the sound, paid his money and booked more time.
We also laid down a couple of accoustic tracks in AA and were able to transfer them to Vegas using AATranslator - excellent says the client.
Cut a long story short we started mixing a couple of new projects and were getting really annoyed with the lag time when zoomed in.
I'm talking about 6 to 8 seconds just to start playing the tracks which are zoomed in and about halfway into the song!
It must be the rig says my partner!
No it can't says I!
Well we did some tests and here are the facts:-
Loaded up the clients Vegas session
756 wav files, 41 tracks and 1960 clips plus plugins
Zoomed in further than we would in AA in a similar place in the session and Vegas started instantly!
Ok then we converted the exact same session into Reaper using AATranslator
Same result - instant response!
Ok then using AA we dare not load up the same number of files etc
But we did load 24 wavs, 16 tracks and 88 clips
Result on the same PC ?
Response times of 6 to 8 seconds in AA
Note: None of the DAWS put any pressure on the CPU and we even turned off all plugins, cleaned out temp folders etc etc.
We kept the plugins on in the other DAWs
NOT HAPPY JAN!
Edit: Just converted the AA session to Vegas - how embarrasing - zoom right in and it starts instantly!

Some deeper investigation and a discussion today with AlanofOz and I think that I now have a very good grasp of whats going on -
and all is not as it seems!
So why is Reaper for example so much faster I wondered surely they don't have some magic pixie thing that allows them to get the data off the drive faster than AA?
It seems to me that once AA reaches a certain point when zooming in AA no longer uses the pk file as a reference but accesses the drive and the audio directly hence the apparent poor performance.
Sounds bad but its actually not. Strange I know but bear with me.
What is Reaper etal doing?
It appears to me that they are not accessing the drive and the audio directly they continue to refer to the (re)peak file.
This has to be a much better idea right?

Why do a lot of us use AA?
One of the reasons we use it because of its accuracy right down to the sample level - how do they get that accuracy when zoomed in (and why are you zooming in? Because you need accuracy!) by accessing the drive and audio directly.
Okay what about the Reaper (and others) method ? well AlanofOz has done some work in this area and he (and I'll let him jump in although he is in the middle of moving house) maintains that the same accuracy is nowhere near there at the sample level or similar.
Speed vs Accuracy - I'll take accuracy but I can easily get the speed with a 10k raptor drive but nothing will give me the accuracy if its not in the app.
Audio can physically stream off a drive only so fast be it Reaper, Vegas or AA etc
So endeth the lesson.
I'm happy to be corrected (but unlikely to be convinced otherwise) :-D

Is it possible to sync an iPhone to one mac for music only and another mac for everything else? What about shared iPhoto?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage my iphone and that of my wife.
Our set up is that we share music that is on my imac under my apple store id. We also like to have all of our photos in iphoto on that imac.
She has her own macbook and I'd like to use icloud to sink her personal bookmarks, calendar and other stuff.
I've thought about seeing if I could set her phone up to sync with icloud as appropriate, turn on wireless sync on her imac for syncing everything but music, then sync that same iphone on the imact but just sync music.
I've tried to point her macbook to my imac itunes library and that doesn't seem to be working very well.
The other wrinkle is that she is taking photos on her iphone that I'd like to show up in our shared iphoto library and photo stream. Currently we have our individual icloud apple ids so we may sync our own bookmarks and such and we use a separate "store" id for music and apps and such. I'm not sure I see a way for me to merge iphotos into a shared library/stream?

I've been experimenting with setups and I have a feeling folks with more experience have probably worked this out better than the way I'm thinking of doing.

Song for Dying Hard-Drive?

I heard somewhere recently that on Windows PC's that when the hard-drive is facing an imminent failure, a (certain) song will be played on the PC's speakers.
Is there a similar system on the Mac?
My wife shut down her iMac a few days ago and we heard a little jingle that we have never heard before.
I can't remember which tune is played on the Windows PC, but it might be hard-drive rather than OS related.

The way to tell if a hard drive is failing or has failed is to check the SMART Diagnostics. See Step 1 of the the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.

Easy Question for you hard programmers

Do I have to do something special to read from a file using Fort�? My program compiles fine, and it'll even run at a prompt or in TextPad, but when I run it in Fort�, it throws a FileNotFoundException.

You do have to look in the correct directory for the
file, but that's true whether you are using Forte or
not. Perhaps you are not specifying any directory
path and you don't know what Forte uses as its current
directory?I've run into the same problem with Forte when I try to use ClassLoader.findResource to find a file. I never did figure out where it's supposed to be, even if I modifed the classpath. However, it worked when I specified a specific file path, i.e. starting with C:\ etc etc. What's annoying is that you of course have to escape the backslashes. C:\\dir\\subdir.... etc. yuck.

Workaround for remote with Apple TV + Mac Mini media server?

We have to keep unplugging and then replugging our Apple TV 2 any time we want to use our Mac Mini media server instead of the Apple TV on our home entertainment system. Alas, the lack of a power button.
The reason we have to do this is because the remote control signals are identical for the two units; we're using Plex TV on the Mac Mini, and when we use our universal remote, if the Apple TV is on, then unintended things happen in the background on the Apple TV any time we control the Plex media server. Ack. We could end up buying a video that we don't want.
What workarounds are there, to avoid plugging and unplugging the Apple TV, if we want to keep using a remote control with both the Apple TV and with the Mac Mini media server? I understand that plugging and unplugging it is not desireable.
On the other hand, we do shut off power completely to our entire entertainment system, via the power conditioner, when we're not using it, to conserve. I suppose that's equivalent to plugging and unplugging the Apple TV?

I know its been 17 months since anyone replied to your post, but I stumbled upon your request, because I had the same issue. However, I can faithfully say that I solved this same problem, because I inadvertendly programmed my MX-980 remote to control my Apple TV and Mac Mini at the same time and didn't realize until much later what was happening. I use my Mac Mini (for the purpose of using PLEX) and my Apple TV for other purposes. Here's a discussion I had over at remotecontrol.com about it.
The solution for you is have two Apple remotes. You can buy an extra apple remote at a good price over at Amazon.
Out of box, the apple remote is designed to pair with your Mac and Apple TV as long as pairing is enabled on those machines by default. However, it's the consumer's responsibility to physically pair that remote with the machine you want to control so it can't control any other machine. That's the trick you were missing...
So, if you have an Apple TV and Mac Mini next to each other -- a single Apple Remote will control BOTH machines at the same time out of box. This is not the intended result as you have indicated. Therefore you need two apple remotes.
Mac Mini: Once you have two apple remotes, go to your Mac Mini (OSX 10.9) and select under the Apple menu > Preferences > Security > General > Click unlock (bottom left corner) first > sign in > Then click Advanced... to see the Pairing process. If you click advanced *before* you click unlock icon, the pairing menu will be missing.
Note: You can also install free CandleAir preference for your Mac which is a slick interface for configuring apple remotes faster and easier IMHO. http://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/
Apple TV: Now take your second Apple Remote, go to Apple TV > Preferences > General > Remote and follow the on screen instructions to properly pair your remote control.
This should solve your problem.

hi sorry what happoned is that ages ago i brought a i phone 3gs on 02 network i went to a sml phone shop and payed for them to unlock it. it has been fine till yesterday when i went to reset it from the phone it then turned off and came back on just just an image of a apple for about an hour so i connected to i tunes and it said downloading software after another hr it had finished but then i tunes said in had to insert a sim so i had to un plug the phone from laptop while i did this i put my orange sim in and the i phone said where do i live and had to connect to a internet connection but all the time saying no service where the signal bar is and then says activating i phone it took a few min and said couldnt finish it bec of the signal and to connect it to i tunes to do it so i connected it to itunes and i tunes just keeps saying invalid sim so i took my orange sim out and put a 02 sim in and is still saying invalid sim on itunes?

I keep getting emails for another user; can't seem to contact Apple support about this

Hi there,
I keep receiving emails for someone called Amanda to my email address. These are not spam emails; it seems like someone called Amanda is signing up to reputable websites using my email address. So far, Pinterest, Educreations and a women's magazine have sent me emails to confirm my membership. There doesn't seem to be anything suspect going on: they're all respectable websites, and they're always addressed to Amanda. I was also receiving confidential emails from a legitimate business with invoices etc. a while back.
I'm confused as to what would be the cause and/or point of this. It seems like a very benign way to spam/scam somebody. Is it possible (I feel ridiculous even asking this) that emails can become crossed like telephones? I know, I know, it's a stupid question.
I'd like to contact Apple Support about this, but I seem to be going round in circles on the website. Unless I have AppleCare (mine is expired) I can't seem to get in contact with anyone. Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction?

I have been waiting since months for the new IPad4G 64 Gbt. ON recommendation of Apple Support I have changed my IPad 4G last week in the hope that something was wrong with the firts one I bought.
The one I have now has the same problems. WiFi is working however 4G not at all. Apple what can I do? What are you doing for the thausands of German Apple fans who have bought a IPad4G and can not use it. We need a solution NOW. I´m working with this tool and need to be able to rely on it.

My hard drive continually has the floating beach ball and will take massive time to fulfill a request. And then will not boot up...so then I have to do a restore and rebuild hard drive from a past saved time machine version. Works for a little bit...then the floating beachball comes more and more...until it will not boot up again. So then I restore from a previous time machine saved version....and again it works for a day or so ... until it happens again. Now it's happening faster and faster...so I think my hard drive is dying.

So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Try answering them at least once to see if you can get them right, even if you are not sure you remember the answers to your security questions.

I've already been in support and tried to reset them, but I have to answer the security questions in order to change them. Is there any way to find out what they are?
