Question for EXS24 instrument editor experts!

Can anybody help with this?
here's what I'm trying to do:
I'm trying to combine a solo violin instrument and a solo cello instrument into one EXS24 instrument that has the violin in the higher octaves and the cello in the lower octaves, not overlapping (to use with my EWI).
These are VSL (Vienna Symphonic) instruments, a different sample every half step, 3 velocity layers (different group for each velocity layer). So each instrument has around 150 audio samples.
Here's what i tried so far:
I opened the violin instrument, I added a new group and named it "solo cello pp". I drag dropped all the cello pp samples into the new group. I chose "auto map" in the dialog box.
OK, when I look in the new group it got all the zone key notes right (zone key note matches the audio sample name)
But... every zone has a key range of "Lo C-2, hi G8" so when I play the patch I'm hearing all the samples playing at once (because every zone has the full key range)
OK ... I can just go type in the correct key range for each zone (like for the A#3 sample: "Lo A#3, hi A#3" etc.) but with 150 samples per inst., that's typing in a field 300 times! Kind of insane! and I plan to build several instruments like this (trombone/trumpet, bassoon/oboe etc.)
Is there a smarter way to do this?
I suppose I could probably just keep the violin & cello instruments separate, constrict their ranges so they don't overlap, have them on separate tracks, record enable both tracks, and play it that way. But it would just be more idiot proof to have it all in one EXS24 instrument.
Any help would be appreciated.

EXS is not the easiest to work with.........
but , do this:
bring two EXS's up on two different channels.
load the vlns in one, the cello in the other.
open the cello edit pane. switch to "group" and select all groups.
open the edit menu and click on "copy".
next, open the vln editor, then click on edit and select "paste".
this should copy the cello in the vln pane.
if they overlap, you'll have to move them an octave and probably limit the range.
save as....... a new patch.

  • EXS24 Instrument Editor - RIDE SUSTAIN

In the EXS24 Instrument Editor (perhaps elsewhere; I haven't checked), when I record a ride cymbal, it sounds wrong/choppy unless I hold down the sustain pedal on the keyboard. But when I play back the track without the sustain pedal held down, it sounds all divided-up again. (It sounds like a ride cymbal with a mongo gate on it, which totally goes against what a ride cymbal is supposed to be.) I can't find any obvious adjustment in the EXS24 editor - but it seems like such an obvious problem, there's got to be a simple solution.
Another question: In the EXS24 editor, is there a way to assign drum sounds to the black keys while not interrupting the white keys that are assigned to a different drum sound?

    In the instrument editor...
Click the "one shot" checkbox for your cymbal. That should let it ring out.
As far as your assignments, assign them to different groups and set the characteristics for that group.

  • EXS24 Instrument editor

By hitting certain notes on the keyboard we can trigger different sounds in EXS24.
How can I setup EXS24 Instrument editor so when instrument is loaded it plays the first sound?
The only way to do this is arrange the groups in alphabetical order. Then loaded instrument plays the first group.
That's how it used to be in Logic 7.
But how can I do it in Logic 8?

Your question is a little bit confusing
What are you loading? Factory instrument sets that came with Logic or your own samples?
If you are loading your own samples, after creating a new instrument you need to create zones, where you can define the range and basic note of the samples (and much more).
Probably "all notes play at the same time" happens because you are not assigning zones to the individual samples.
Please start reading at page 520 of the Logic Pro 7 Plug-in Reference Manual for all the detailed information you need.
Hope this gets you on the succesful track of managing the instrument editor, which IMO is beautiful and powerful.

  • Logic Express 7 - EXS24 Instrument Editor

Just bought LE7. Can't find the EXS24 instrument editor (which is in LE6). Any ideas please? thanks.

    hi. thanks for the tip.
another problem: I've tried playing an EXS instrument I've created in LE6 in a song in LE7 and although I hear the instrument in the record mode, I can't hear it in the playback mode. there's a signal in the arrange window next to the audio instrument but no signal in the volume area in the mixer. this isn't happening with pre-existing EXS instruments.
    any idea please?
oops. solved this. just needed to switch out of logic 7 and re-boot. doh!

  • Questions for I/O interface experts

I have few questions for I/O interface experts:
I have a Power Mac G5 2.3 Ghz 8GB of RAM, PCI-X slots, and am running Final Cut Studio FC version 6. I currenly have an HD project on my timeline (uploaded directly form a P2 card via 400FW), and I'd like to be able to output on a HD VTR deck as wellas a BetacamSP deck:
    1) which AjA Kona cards (3, LHe, LH) is right for me?
    2) did you personally experience, or are you aware of any issues with this Kona card and Final Cut version 6? Any tips before I purchase?
    3) will this card allow me to output uncompressed HD, that is, the same quality I uploaded?
    4) in which of the slots on my back tower does it go? 64bit 100MHz or 64bit 133MHz?
    Cheers,
    Rinaldo

I think FireWire is probably the best route.
The main difference between the two seem to be that the 1814 has more inputs and the ADAT interface, the 410 has more outputs.
So are you planning on recording, then go for the 1814.
If you envision that 2 mics and 2 inputs is enough for your recording needs and you eventually want to mix surround you'd need the 410 as it is the one with enough outputs.
If you want specific advice about interfaces I suggest you ask in the Logic forums as those users would be most experienced with this aspect of an audio system.

  • How do you save sample regions in the EXS24 instrument editor?

Hi There, I don't if my memory has failed me or something was changed in Logic pro 9 but I can't get a EXS24 instrument to save the sample region sections I set?? I open EXS24 click on edit, click on load zone, load a sample, click on edit in sample editor, set the region and then the new region doesn't set inside the EXS24 sample editor window? Tried saving the instrument, but it doesn't up date the selection? It just keeps the entire waveform as the sample? What am I doing wrong here? In the past this was really simple, you just moved the region on the sample area you want and the sample begin and end setting automatically update inside the EXS24 instrument editor window and then you just saved the instrument and each piece of the audio file as and how you set it was then on your keyboard ready to be used. Can anyone help me out here?
    Thanks

Got it to work, seems I had to resave the audio file again... weird glitch...

  • Question for active X excel experts

My question is this how do I create multiple charts on the same page using Labview?  Please look at my program to get a better idea of what I like to do.  Basically I have 2-D array of clusters of 4 elements (Y1, Y2, X1, X2), which define the range of the plot.  Each row in the 2-D array has 2 clusters which will be plotted as series 1 and series 2 on a plot.  I am indexing that two dimention array to creat multiple plots, each of which contains two series/graphs.

    Hi joeycao,
To get a general idea of which sequence of commands you'll need to use to create these charts and configure them as you like, your best bet is to record a macro in Excel, doing the steps, and then later examine which are used. You'll then be able to use invoke nodes to make these ActiveX calls in the proper sequence.
Please refer to this knowledgebase, Using National Instruments Software to Control Microsoft Excel with ActiveX
for a description of how to do this.
Hopefully that gets you started on the right path.

  • EXS24 Instrument Editor - No sound

When picking drum sounds for the "Audio File" in the "Zone" box -- such as KICK BB 21.aif -- I can "play" the sound and hear it (i.e., while choosing which kick sound I want). But, once I "open" this sound, and it's the chosen sound in my Zone box, I can't hear anything when I play any of the keys, even when the default range of keys is set to ALL of the keys. Thus, I know my speakers are working (it plays when I'm choosing), but apparently something else isn't set up right.

Thanks very much. Once I saved the drumkit, chose the EXS24 as the instrument for the track, and selected the new drumkit within the EXS24, everything worked great.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

  • Question for the experts on Video problem

We are away on holidays but didn't want to miss this opportunity to ask for help from the experts. I'm not sure if I have a problem with my motherboard or video card or both. I posted the problem previously but here it is again.
I have an HPE-250f HP desktop computer which has worked well although has not had a lot of use. Shortly after purchasing it I got a real deal on a 17" i7 laptop which has been used much more than the desktop. Yesterday numerous Windows updates were installed and a couple of reboots to complete the installations. On occasion in the past Windows updates have caused issues but am sure they are not the cause of the current problem.
Upon turning on the computer yesterday it sounded like an airplane taking off so pulled the side cover off and it was the fan on the video adaptor that was making all of the noise. I have never heard it anywhere near that loud in the past even when under very heavy usage. In addition there was no video signal so my first thought was the adaptor had died. I took the adaptor out and reinstalled it to make sure it was seated properly however no change. I took the adaptor out again and then uncapped the VGA and DVI connectors that are on the rear of the computer but I did not get a video signal from either of those two outlets either. I don't know whether those ports are enabled on the motherboard or in the BIOS as this computer came with an upgraded video card. Either way there was no video. I have another low end video card here that I don't think was ever used so installed it and again no video. The hard drive seems to be making the normal sounds you would hear when it is booting but again with no video can't really say what is going on.
I am sort of out of ideas as to what to try next as without video you can't see if there are any error messages coming up, whether it is trying to boot or is actually loading Windows.
I don't want to scrap the computer and I guess an option would be to try and find the same motherboard and replace it but I am hoping someone may have some suggestions as to whether there should be video from the built in ports that come capped from the factory. It just seems odd that there is no video from the original card, the built in ports, or a different video card. It is also odd the original video card fan funs flat out when you turn the computer on before it even starts to get warm. If there is a problem with the slot the card goes in one would think the built in ports would still have video but that is assuming they are actually enabled but again don't know if they would be.
If anyone has any suggestions or if anyone knows a reliable place to buy the same motherboard that is in this computer I would appreciate that information.
    Thank you

Finally back from vacation and took a bit of time to get caught up from vacation. It appears somehow two threads got started so will continue on with this one as there is more activity here. There is no video from the original video card reinstalled in the computer. There is also no video on either of the integrated ports after removing the caps and removing the battery, and tried two different monitors just to be sure. I have a friend with the same computer and he said there is no setting in the CMOS/BIOS to enable the onboard video so don't know if it has been permanently disabled or not but again no video from either of the integrated ports. Also If there is a speaker on this computer they have done a very good job of hiding it and i have never heard it beep in all the time i have owned it. I know at this link under INTERNAL CONNECTORS it mentions a speaker connection. I would install a speaker for the purpose of troubleshooting but I cannot find a reference anywhere that says which pins are for a speaker so if anyone would know where to find this information I would gladly install a speaker so we could troubleshoot further. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-Desktop-PC-series/4162190/model/4262654/document/c02014355 It is certainly a possibility that one of the updates caused an issue but it would be surprising as these were updates to Windows and not the BIOS, so one would think if the update was causing an issue it would be after the POST and when it was about to start loading Windows. I will try the suggestions listed above to the extent I can without a speaker connected but it would be great if someone can post a manual for the motherboard that mentions which pins or header has the speaker connections so I can install a speaker. I just heard back from my friend that has the exact same conputer and his has no audible beep when it starts either and am sure there is simply no internal speaker on this computer. Thank you

  • Lost EXS24 instruments

    hi
I made a new instrument in 2 songs in exs instruments editor. I saved them and for a while they showed up in the list of instruments when you loaded exs24. Now they are not there. In one of the 2 songs in question the instrument still shows up and can be played (but not saved) but in the other song the instrument is totally lost. Any clues. The drive the songs are saved on had it's enclosure go dodgy but is now in a new one an is working again.....
    any suggestions greatly appreciated

Try Reindexing spotlight to begin with:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15400327#15400327
then repair disk permissions with disk utility, or better do that the other way round! Can you locate the instruments yourself in the finder?
No unusual issues after installing LPX, you'll end up with two fully functional DAWs. Considering that 32 Bit plugins are rendered unusable in LPX, all is surprisingly well afterwards. At least so it was in in a few cases I know off!

  • EXS24 instrument created from audio region- How to  move files?

In Logic Pro X. I have created an EXS24 instrument from an audio region with 3 well-separated sounds. The instrument in EXS24 editor shows a zone with 3 files. Each file is actually the same physical file, but, when examining the three separate "files" (what should I call them??), a different section is highlighted for each tone. I can set a note for each of these "files". This instrument plays perfectly.
So now I have 2 files in my project folder  - a .exs one for the instrument, and ONE SINGLE .wav file somehow representing three different samples. I want to move them to ~Library/Application Support/Logic/folderName, where folderName is , say,  myInstruments (for .exs) and mySamples (for .wav). When I do this, and erase the files in the project folder, I can load the instrument and the sample file into EXS24, but the sample file is recognized as one single tone - that is, in the EXS24 editor, there is only one file rather than 3, and that file has all three audio sounds.
How do I move these files correctly? Is there some way to get them created originally in the correct place?

  • Environment for EXS24

How do I set up the Environment so that I can use an EXS24 instrument to play a MIDI file that I already have? I've been using Logic 2 thru 5 for years but I'm completely new to the audio capabilities of Logic 7. I brought the song file in from Logic 5, but now I'm clueless about how to get the EXS24 to play it so that I can hear it.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sorry you are having so many problems. My steps do require at least basic fundamental knowledge of how tracks work, how you assign a track type, adding an instrument plug-in to an audio instrument channel strip, etc. I'm surprised that this is not well covered in the basics of the manual. I have been using it a long time, so I take a lot for granted.. lets see if we can make it simple:
    background:
All tracks in the Arrange window can be assigned so that MIDI regions will play to either a MIDI instrument (external device) or a Software Instrument (aka Audio Instrument, a plug-in instrument). Audio Regions only play back on audio tracks. There are a couple of other types of tracks which don't actually playback any kinds of regions, but appear in the arrange window so that their plug-ins can be automated, these would be BUS/AUX/Output tracks.
Ok, so to create a software instrument track, you have to have at least one audio instrument object in the environment for it to be available to assign to a track. By default, if you are not working on a template, Logic comes with at least 4 of these in the environment, so you shouldn't have to create anything. When you first launched Logic the first time, it should have run a setup assistant which asks you how many audio instruments you want to add to your default song. I think it typically adds 32 audio instruments, so either way you should have at least one to work with.
As the previous poster recommended, I'd suggest using one of the new song templates that come with Logic. They come with a number of audio instruments already and waiting in the environment for use in the arrange window. The environment in Logic is often intimidating to new users, but to be honest, its really very simple. Its a repository for channel strips and external MIDI instruments that you can access from the arrange window.
Ok, so once you have launched Logic, create a new song and choose "use template" in the new song dialog. This should present you with a list of templates you can choose from. Try loading any of these general production type templates. After loading you should see a number of pre-created tracks ready to use. Find an audio instrument track. Usually, these have names like "Inst 1", "Inst 2" etc.. Select this track.
Next, make sure the Arrange window Parameter sidebar is visible. You can tell if the far left side of the Arrange window has a mixer looking channel strip at the lower left and a bunch of editable parameters in the upper left. If its not open already, go to the View menu of the Arrange window and select "Show Parameters" (actualy don't know the precise term, doing this all from memory.)
The "Channel Strip" is basically a graphical representation of the volume, mute, solo, pan and plug-in insert controls. It contains a number of other functions too, but this is where most of the sound generating and processing is done in Logic.
Once you have one of these open, plug-ins can be added by clicking and holding on the little insert squares. A popup menu should show you the plug-ins availble both from Apple and any 3rd party audio units plug-ins you have installed.
For Audio Inst tracks, the plug-in slot for instruments is located just above the Output 1-2 slot. Clicking and holding on this little square will reveal all of the instruments available, including the EXS or EXSP depending on if you are using Logic Pro or Logic Express.
    Choose the EXS.
The EXS plug-in should open up and the EXS interface should now be available to you. It has a graphical element which looks like an LCD display. This is really a popup menu which contains all fo the Logic Factory EXS instruments, GarageBand Factory instruments and any 3rd party EXS instruments you have installed. Select one of these and it should load up.
After its loaded up, you should be able to play in notes from a MIDI controller, any imported standard MIDI file, etc.
    I hope this helps..

  • HOW DO I TRIGGER GROUPS IN AN EXS24 INSTRUMENT VIA MIDI FROM THE SCORE

HOW DO I TRIGGER DIFFERENT GROUPS IN AN EXS24 INSTRUMENT VIA MIDI CONTROLLER MESSAGES FROM THE SCORE - PLEASE ? WHERE DO I GO IN DOCUMENTATION AS HAVE GIVEN UP FOR TIME BEING WITH MULTI INSTRUMENT WHERE I CAN'T SEEM TO DEFINE CUSTOM BANK SELECTS BECAUSE I CAN'T FIND THAT OPTION. BUT MAYBE I'M ON THE WRONG TRACK ANYWAY! WITH THANKS

For those who are following this thread I have received the following info from LPH: it hasn't dealt with this through midi controllers but with key switches in a v. easy to work with fashion, though I would still like to have a result with former, if there is anybody that can give me a clear proceedure. Christian thanks for your help and if you are offay with MC's then I love to hear from you!
    METHOD #1
Create a duplicate track for those instruments which you're keyswitching. Let's just focus on one instrument for now, flute. Create a duplicate track assigned to your flute instrument ("new track with same instrument/channel"). Next, copy all of the regions from the original track onto this track and merge (glue) them to create one contiguous track. Of course if you have only one region for the part, just copy the region over to the new track.
Then go into the piano roll editor and swipe the keyboard on the left in the range of your keyswitches. Then use the command "toggle selection" and hit DELETE. Now you have a region that contains only your keyswitches.
Or, of course, you can just swipe the range that the instrument plays in. Then hit DELETE. Either way...
The final step here is to untick the "score" checkbox for this keyswitch-only region (region parameters). Now, both tracks will still play, except only the actual flute part will appear in your score.
    METHOD #2
In the score editor, open the staff style for the part. Set the highest note/lowest note range to (visually) filter out the keyswitch notes. This may seem like the easiest way to do things, but it will require you to have a distinct staff style applied to each part. For example, if you're using the Treble staff style for multiple parts (picc, flute, bass clarinet) and their key switches are in different ranges of the keyboard (as is the case with some libraries), you will need to create duplicates of "Treble", name them accordingly (picc, flute, b.clarinet), assign them to the various regions playing those parts, and then set their highest/lowest note values accordingly.
