Question for fellow Audiophiles

Anyone know what DAC the Apple TV uses for the analog output of audio?
I was thinking of using a external DAC, feeding to from the optical out of the Apple TV.
How good is the analog outs on the Apple TV?
Anyone using a external DAC like a Benchmark 1 or Bel Canto with the Apple TV?

I'm pretty sure it's PCM as my Yamaha processor only supports that, Dolby Digital and DTS - it certainly doesn't output the last two for mp3s/wavs and movies.
There are some music tracks out there encoded in DTS and dolby digital surround which you can get to play on AppleTV. Some people say they have a method for putting digital surround tracks in a movie but it's so convoluted (to my mind) that it'd be simpler to play a DVD.

  • Question for an audiophile...what exactly IS normalization?

Maybe someone here can end my years of ignorance on this topic.
Audio normalization is often described as the process of applying constant gain to a recording to bring the highest peak to a target level. (This is often defined in opposition to compression, which narrows the dynamic range of a recording).
So how is normalization any different than just turning the volume up or down? I know I'm missing something.
    Thanks,
    Zap

I believe Cory is saying there are 2 different ways audio could be normalized, but only one of them is used in STP. . .the Peak (volume knob) normalization.
The RMS version he describes isn't very practical because you would essentially be normalizing all the audio to the same level. Imagine if the background noise (normally at -20db) and people talking during an interview (normally at -6db) were all normalized using the RMS method. They would all end up being pretty close to the same volume, the background and voices would be so close that they could at times be indistinguishable, or they simply wouldn't sound normal since that is not how "normal" sounding audio works.
You were right that normalization is essentially the same as raising the master volume level slider, but with normalization the computer finds the peak audio and raises it the appropriate level, then raises the surrounding audio the same amount. Using the volume level slider YOU would have to find the peak audio point in a file to make sure that you didn't raise the peak point past the highest level you desire. Essentially the same result, but with normalization the computer does the work of finding the peak point.
As for the compression filter, I haven't delved into that yet so I couldn't speak to it. Not to pass the buck, but maybe Cory knows the inner workings of the compression filter.

  • Question for true audiophiles....

Apple Lossless takes up a heck of a lot more space than iTunes plus. I'm referring to importing from CD's. Can you guys really tell a difference in sound quality between the two? I use P5 headphones and sounsticks on my Mac. I also play all my stuff in my cars from the iPods. Is it worth all the extra space and go with Lossless?

Personally no, I can't, but I'm not listening on high end audio equipment. You yourself must be the judge. Just remember, you have other alternatives. There are compression ratios in between, for example you could import between 320 kbps and 512 kbps which would be better quality/larger files than iTunes Plus but less quality/smaller files than Apple Lossless.

  • Question For Fellow Guitarists

What recording interface do most of you use? I have an M-Audio Firewire Solo, and I had volume issues with Garageband '08 and now Garageband '09 doesn't seem to find the M-Audio unit at all.
I like Garageband, but I'm really close to scrapping this and going another direction altogether.

I was looking at interfaces too.
I looked at the Lexicon Alpha, the Noise Industries Audio Kontrol, and the Edirol UA-4fx.
All pretty good with selling points and drawbacks. But....
For the money $99.00, the absolute best deal was the Line 6 Ux2 Toneport.
It works fine as a standalone interface for Garageband ( or Soundtrack) ((once you install the drivers))
And the software is a download of PODFARM giving you tons of sounds and toys.
The key is to buy last years model ( Red faceplate) and go with the download.
The new one is $199.00 (Black faceplate) for wich they sell you the same thing but the software
ALSO acts as a plug-is in all your audio programs.
But this function can be added later for an additional $50, still cheaper than the new one.
The close-outs migt be all gone, but MF (Musicians friend) has a few UX1's still.
    and they are only $54.
No Phantom and only one input. If you intend only Guitars and dynaic mics the UX1 is a bargain and the Podfarm is a gas.

  • I have a new email address and my old email keeps coming up on icloud when trying to update apps and i don't know the password or security questions for the old email. I can sign in with my apple id which is tied to another email but not itunes how to fix

I have an apple id and it has my current email attached to it. however when i go to update apps it's asking for the password for an old email. I no longer have the old email and can't use it. when I go to icloud on my ipad it asks for the password for old email. it doesn't allow me to change the old email to current. when i go to reset it i can't remember the password or security questions for the old email so it doesn't let me go any further. How do I fix this? Do i need to call apple support?

I have the same problem - it is maddening. I rely on this iPad for work so this is not just an annoyance! The above solutions of changing the appleid on the device or on the website do not work.
The old email address no longer exists - I haven't used it in a year probably and I no longer have the account.  I logged into the appleid website and there is no trace of the old email address so there is nothing that can be deleted or changed there.  On the iPad there is no trace of the old email address so nothing can be deleted there either. I have updated the iPad software and the same problem comes right back.  Every 2 seconds I am asked to log in using the old non-existent email.  The device is currently useless.
The only recent change to anything was the addition of an Apple TV device, which was set up using the correct login and password.
Does anyone have any ideas? The iPad has been backed up to the iCloud so presumably it now won't recognize the current iCloud account? So restoring may notbe an option?

  • I am having trouble answering my old security questions for my itunes account and it is creating a problem because I am not able to purchase apps/songs on my new IPAD. What phone number/email adress should I call to get a quick response to my issue?

I have recently bought an IPAD 2 for my girlfriend and have encountered a problem with purchasing apps through my itunes account. It is requesting that I not only enter my pasword (which I know) but answer my old account questions, which I have forgotten the answers to. It had since locked me out of changing my questions for eight hours. Is there any number I can call to prove that I am the real owner of my itunes account so my girlfriend will be able to use her ipad to purchase new apps without having to go through the trouble of using one of my other apple devices? Random information: I believe my questions were set back in 2007 when I purchased my first ipod nano, since then I have used this same itunes account for my own ipod touch and ipad 2 and my girlfriends iphone 1st generation. I have never run into a problem regarding my questions before on any of these devices

    hi guru
can somebody give some real time questions for alv report.

    regards
    subhasis.

    hi,
The ALV is a set of function modules and classes and their methods which are added to program code. Developers can use the functionality of the ALV in creating new reports,  saving time which might otherwise have been spent on report enhancement
The common features of report are column    alignment, sorting, filtering, subtotals, totals etc. <b>To implement these, a lot of coding and logic is to be put. To avoid that we can use a concept called ABAP List Viewer (ALV).</b>
Using ALV, we can have three types of reports:
       1. Simple Report
       2. Block Report
       3. Hierarchical Sequential Report

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.
