Question for Hatter; re: Newer Technology eSATA Extender Cable

Greetings Hatter,
I read in a recent post that you were using the Newer Technology Extender Cable to hook up drives to the extra 2 SATA ports on the Mac Pro's logic board.
I have a FirmTek enclosure (and a bunch of internal drives) that I used with my G5, and I'd like to continue using it with the Mac Pro.
Quick question: how is the cable working for you? Any problems?
Thank you for all the valuable information you post on these forums.
H.

The other threads on Newer kit, and www.xlr8yourmac.com report, are a good resource.
Drives have to be on at startup; can't be unmounted and can't turn on or off while the system is up. Excellent otherwise.
I added a 1x 2-channel controller also so I now have two choices and makes it easy to work with 4 external drives.
It was a real sweat to connect the Newer SATA cable to inside ports.
In the end, using the SeriTek (or Sonnet Tempo) makes more sense overall.

  • Is there any esata extender cable adapter for Mac Pro 3.1?

I have a Mac Pro 3.1 with two Quad-Core Intel Xeon @3GHz, and G-DRIVE0G00204 2TB External Hard Drive.
I was told the speed of sSATA cable is 3 times faster compared to firewire 800, but the Mac Pro doesnt provide eSATA port. Is there any solution to make connection with Mac Pro via sSATA cables?
    Thanks.

You do this with a pci slot.  Either the following,

  • Report on installing Newer eSATA extender cable

Well I took the time to install the Newer eSATA extender cable and am zeroing the hard drive now in anticipation of Leopard arriving next week. It turns out that there is a glitch in the installation of the Newer extender and some Mac Pros. Mine was one of the problematic ones.
In order to install the cable you have to access the mother board behind the front fan unit. Basically that means taking out RAM boards, HDs. and a few screws. It should be pretty easy but the problem comes in from an assembly line error. On some Mac Pros two screws (located in the front edge of the RAM card bay) with tiny phillips heads which are screwed into extenders have been installed with Locktite rather than the extenders being installed with Locktite. That means that you almost inevitably strip those screw heads and the extenders spin. I had to use a tiny knife bladed file to hand cut a slot in each of the screws to get them out and then retighten the extenders with small nosed hemostats.
If the job went with no problems it is entirely do-able for someone reasonably handy (with the proper tools) and the Newer directions pamphlet is very well done. However, if you run into the Locktite problem the complexity of the job increases considerably. Overall, I think I'd suggest people without some electronic repair/modification experience use FireWire 800 for their Leopard Time Machine interface and avoid the potential difficulties I ran into.

I would have to agree that getting both of the SATA cables on the motherboard is a pain if the screws have the Locktite issue as mine does. However, I found running a stock 24" internal SATA cable with a right angle on one end to one of the SATA motherboard connectors and using an Addonics AASA2SAP15C on the other end of the SATA cable outside the Mac Pro lets me easily connect an eSATA enclosure to the Mac Pro using the motherboard connector.
    I use this cable converter:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00094OWEC/arizomacinusergr
and this enclosure ICY DOCK MB559US-1S External 3.5" eSATA/USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000KMD1JA/arizomacinusergr
This provides a nice, quick mounting case that I can boot off of if needed using the internal SATA motherboard port. It provides much nicer performance than FW800 and is easy to setup.
    Have fun!

  • 2 Questions for Layout Help (new to DW)

    Hey All,
I'm semi- new to dreamweaver, and although I know the basics, I'm having trouble creating the layout I had planned.
Currently I'm working off a 2 column + header and footer template.
I'm trying to make it so that the header, footer and sidebar are fixed, snapped to their respective sides of the browser no matter how the browser is resized. I would also like to make the main content offer a scroll bar if it exceeds the room between the header and footer. (so that the "room" look isn't ever changed. ie, the floor and ceiling, and dresser stay visable.)
    It looks pretty good here.
    figure A.)
Though here when I resize the browser the dresser comes off of the floor, and I don't know why.
    Figure B.)
    So, most important questions are.
1.) What kind of positioning method should I be using to keep the dresser snapped to the floor which is snapped to the bottom of the browser?
2.) What should I change in the #mainContent CSS to offer a scroll bar if the content exceeds the room available?
Bonus Questions if anyone feels extra awesome today.
1.) I have 3 div boxes in the header, Roof_right, Roof_left are both absolutely positioned. The middle Div box has a background of the logo. If I resize the browser enough, the logo actually gets hidden behind the absolutely positioned pieces, which isn't good. How can I fix this?
2.) I would like to stick the dresser about 50px down into the footer if possible, instead of sitting directly on top of it. Is this possible?
    Thank you
    B

It comes down to how you slice your layout.
    http://alt-web.com/DEMOS/Image-slices-in-a-CSS-based-layout.shtml
I would avoid APdivs if at all possible as they take content out of the normal flow and can trip you up if you're not careful.  I would start with the following basic CSS layout.
    CSS:
    #Container {width: value in pixels; margin:0 auto; /**centers on screen**/; background: url (page-background.jpg) repeat-y;}
    #headerWrapper {width: value in pixels; min-height: value in pixels or ems; background: url (roof.jpg) no-repeat;}
    #header-left {float:left; width: 25%;}
    #header-right {float:right; width: 25%;}
    #mainContent {margin-left: value in pixels; height: value in pixels; overflow: scroll; /**scrolling division**/}
    #SideBar {float:left; width: value in pixels; background: url (middle-dresser.jpg) repeat-y}
    #footer {background: #FFF url {dresser-feet.jpg) top left no-repeat; min-height: value in pixels; text-align:center}
    2-column, fixed width, centered

  • Seritek 2EN2 + Intel SSD's + eSATA Extender?

I am going to be setting up a new boot volume for my Mac Pro most likely consisting of 2 x 80GB Intel X25-M SSD's in a RAID 0 stripe. I am still exploring options on how to configure this along with my other data volumes and am wondering if anyone has any experience with any of the following configurations.
    1. *Seritek 2EN2 Enclosure* [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Firmtek/SATA2EN2> + *Newer Tech eSATA Extender* [http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MPQXES2>
My first question with this setup is will the Seritek 2EN2 enclosure accept the 2.5" SSD drives? I know from these forums that the VelociRaptors are not supported. I'm curious if using the Intel-provided 3.5" bay adapters with the Seritek trays will work properly. If Firmtek can confirm or deny this that would be very helpful.
Secondly, I don't believe the Seritek 2EN2 is a port multiplier, so there shouldn't be any foreseeable performance hit using this with the 2 SSD's as they will each be on their own channel. Is this correct?
Lastly, I prefer to boot from this and I'm curious if anyone regularly boots from the 2 extra ODD SATA ports on the logic board. Any downsides or problems?
What's nice about this setup is it frees up the 4 internal bays for a fast RAID 0 data volume.
Note: I also have a Sonnet Tempo E4P card installed with a SeriTek 5PM connected and this setup has been flawless. Firmtek is a bit pricey but high-quality in my experience.
    2. *MaxConnect 2.5" Drive Sled for Mac Pro* [http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=Product.display&product _id=180] [http://bilsta57.com/?p=1266]
This looks like a nice solution and definitely has the easiest install process, simply replacing the existing drive sleds in the Mac Pro. The downside is, using 2 SSD's in a RAID 0 stripe will eat up 2 of the internal bays. I am considering this option especially if I end only using 1 of the SSD's as the boot drive in my Mac Pro and possibly using the other SSD in my MBP instead.
    3. *MaxConnect Optical Bay Kit* [http://www.maxupgrades.com/istore/index.cfm?fuseaction=Product.display&product _id=188]
As far as I can tell, this 2.5" kit will mount 2 or 4 SSD's in the lower optical bay position. I would have to give up my second optical drive with this solution. I'm assuming that the 2 SSD's would still connect to the 2 ODD ports on the logic board. It seems like routing the SATA cables from the logic board up to the optical bay could be a PITA. Also, event though I'd be running SSD drives, I wonder about cooling and ventilation as I don't think there are any fans up there.
Anybody using any of these solutions in their MP? Any advice or comments?
Finally, can anyone comment on using a single Intel X25-M 80GB SSD as their boot drive vs. striping two together in RAID 0? I'm still a bit on the fence on this point. A single SSD is going to smoke my current solution and I'm wondering if 2 in RAID 0 is overkill or really noticeably better in real-world experience.
    Cheers!

A fan sits behind the optical bay. Getting to the ODD ports is easier than you imagine:

  • Old geezer with new technology question

I am old and I have an old cell phone.
It will make calls and receive calls.
I am thinking about venturing to some new technology... an iPhone maybe?
Wondering if it will do ONE THING that I might be wanting to do.
    With an iPhone... can you:
make a video/audio recording AND simultaneously, real time, upload it to... somewhere
as in... I have an iCloud account, maybe there?
    Thanks,
    James
P.S. Please make any answers at kindergarten level, and don't assume I know a bunch of terms or concepts, I probably don't.  Thanks.
P.P.S. If you need more information from me to answer/help, just ask and i will try to provide.

    Thank you, Novicii.
I don’t have Facebook or Twitter (and WON’T), so they’re out.
And don’t know about WiFi areas.
But if I have an iCloud account and (got) a cellular data plan (when I got my iPhone) then it sounds like I could do this.
    Only two questions:
    1-
    You talk about uploading “photos”.
I’m talking about uploading continuously running video as it is still recording.
Will it (progressively) upload the video (pari passu) WHILST the video is still in the process of recording?
Or would you need to END the video recording before it would SEND?
    2-
And the link you gave me (great link!)
Talks about PhotoStream vs. Shared PhotoStream and the requirements.
I’ve only got OSX 10.7.5 but it looks like that would suffice for (non-shared) PhotoStream, which would be fine for me.
    10.7.5?
    3-
But again, all I saw the link talking about was “Photos” (admit I haven't parsed my way through all there completely)
Does everything they say on that page you linked about photos apply to VIDEO?
    Thanks Novicii!

  • My question is this: Can good teaching be enhanced with new technology?

Can good teaching be enhanced with new technology? Adobe eLearning Suites is certainly a high-end product with many users and a lot of finance and research behind it. My question is why? Where is eLearning going and, again, is face-to-face teaching going the way of the dodo as a result of this new type of technology?

    Hello,
Hope you were not too startled by my reaction, your question reminds me of all the antagonism I have to struggle with every day in the college (with colleagues and management), hence my 'passionate' reaction. Reactions like 'I've written a good course some years ago, I'm a good teacher, why should I need all those hypes you are talking about...'. But that is not what you are interested in...
You asked about tests reported. Vaguely I remember (from a training in 2009) some tests, but have to search for the right references. My personal opinion about those tests is that first of all one should know precisely what to test: when is a training successful or more successful? What do you want to measure: it is very easy to test the 'short time' knowledge acquired by a training, that is what we academics are doing most of the time. But I'm not sure that this really is a measure for training success. Who would dare to postpone the test a couple of months after the end of the training?
I'm still teaching F2F, but nowadays not at all like I did 20 yrs ago. Was a rather good teacher, my lessons were very good prepared, with a clear structure and was able to explain in a language comprehensible to most of the students, felt successful when at the end of a lesson, trying to test if the proposed subject was clear to (almost) everone the result was positive. Students felt good too: at that moment, leaving the classroom, they had understood what I had tried to explain. Everyone happy. Was this good teaching? There was a good written course, but when studying the course for the final exam, students were confident, they had understood everything in the lesson, but ... that was so long ago... And, like Rick also pointed out, a lot of questions arrived, and I started explaining again, and again... Who feels well? Some colleagues are still happy with every answer they can give, but I got pretty unhappy. Some students do not dare to ask questions, some need 'audio', others need 'video', ...
Doing some sort of blended learning now: try to present some structure, basic ideas F2F and get them to work on their own. Most of them do not like to read long written courses, so give them small chunks they can digest when they need it for their tasks. And use everything to make it less boring: video, audio, interactivity, self-assessments, let them twitter, chat, discuss on a forum, blog, create a wiki, search, explain to each other... We have the tools, just need some creativity.
Did I do some research with my students? Not in the regular structured way tests are normally conducted. But I'm often starting a lesson with a survey (on our LMS) where students (anonymously) are given their idea about their proper knowledge about the subject, about the used techniques, about their 'digestion' of the previous lesson, about the work they have done: purpose is for me to have some feedback and a base to go on, for each student to have an idea of his position in the group. We are looking at the statistics together and discussing it briefly. When introducing some new 'hype'  there is never an obligation, they can try it out and give their opinion. Just an example: when starting to offer CP-SWF's I offered demonstrations, training simulations and assessments. Feedback from the students pushed me just at never creating demo's again. For the moment I introduced Twitter for a project, will have their feedback after next week and judge then.
Sorry again for a too long answer (begging you pardon, Rick too). When I find the references I have been mentioning I'll post them. Now it is getting rather late, have quite a lot of meetings tomorrow with students.

  • Did Adobe give Google & Yahoo new technology for Flash SEO?

I recently read that Adobe gave Google and Yahoo new technology so spiders can crawl thru Flash sites. Not pictures but text. I was wondering if anyone from Adobe could confirm this and if it really does work. As a designer I prefer to work in Flash because I can create more visually pleasing sites. I built my own portfolio site in Flash only to find out it couldn't be indexed! www.kholstudios.com I was heartbroken. That was about a year ago. I am about to begin one now and am not quite sure how to proceed at the moment. Flash or Dreamweaver? I am a newbe coder so please bare with me in the terminology department.  Any input would be helpful.

    advnturgal,
    > What I would ultimately like to do is have an all Flash site that is
    > indexable. I know that is stretching it, but if Google is indexing swfs,
    > what would be the best method to attract the robots
That's a good question, honestly.  As far as I can tell, you really don't have to do much of anything.  According to the URL from yesterday (along with its external references ---
         http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/06/improved-flash-indexing.html
         http://www.sitemaps.org/faq.php
-- it really seems to me that Google (at least) is capable of "clicking buttons" and following at least some logic inside a SWF to "[explore] Flash files in the same way that a person would."  The <meta> tag you showed belongs in the HTML document that embeds the SWF (that tag isn't supported among the few tags Flash Player recognizes), so while it may serve as a communications medium to indexing robots, all it presumably does is lead those robots to the HTML file.  Whether that same "come hither" relates to SWF content inside such HTML documents, I'm afraid I don't know.
    > Is there any trick to naming buttons or page titles in Flash?
According to the Google blog post listed above, Google is "only discovering and indexing textual content in Flash files."  If "textual content" includes symbol instance names -- I suppose it might -- then you could certainly try giving your target-able objects meaningful instance names (click the symbol on the stage, then look at the Property inspector to see the Instance Name input field).  Be aware, though, that not every symbol supports instance names (graphic symbols don't).  By the sound of it, though, Google reads textual content no matter what sort of symbol it appears in.
On the face of it -- and this is conjecture on my part -- there doesn't seem to be a way to "tag" text inside your SWFs like there is with HTML (that is, by putting headings in <h1>, <h2> tags, or the like).
    > I have also heard that linking to other websites is probably even better
    > than using a lot of copy. How does that work exactly?
Not all search engines care about linking (I think), but Google does.  The more other sites link to your website (not you to theirs!), the more relevant Google considers your site.  I don't think it's fair to suggest that linking from other sites is better than having useful copy ... the words on your own site are almost certainly the most important search keys.  I suppose you could ask other websites to link to your own, but that could potentially get spammy on the part of the person asking.
    > Do I have to negotiate with the other website to get permission to link.
    > Is there special terminology for that?
People occasionally link to my blog entries without permission, and I'm glad when they do, because it drives visitors to my site.    If you choose to link to other sites, you'll be helping their page rank.  The Internet is a public place, so as long as you link to publicly available content on someone else's site, you don't have to ask permission.  If you think about it, that's exactly what sites like Google and Yahoo! do automatically!  And it's also what I did by posting the two URLs a few paragraphs up.  There's no special terminology I know of ... just "link" or "hyperlink".
    > I know I have many questions, but this is the place to seek answers.
This definitely is, and there are plenty of helpful people on all of these Adobe forums.    Your particular line of questions is an interesting one, because it balances between HTML practices (think, the Dreamweaver forum) and Flash practices.  In this case, I wish I knew more about the topic, but the links I've shown, while not exactly cornucopias of knowledge, are at least a good beginning.
What I would do, in your case, is prepare at least some relevant copy (text) in HTML format and place that inside a <div> tag on the main page of your website.  Use something like SWFObject (http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/) to replace the content of that <div> for people with JavaScript enabled and Flash Player installed.  People who meet those requirements (most do!) will simply see your Flash content and never know the different.  Google will index both the HTML content and your SWF(s).  People who don't meet those requirements will nonetheless be able to read a summary of what your site is about -- that way, you reach the broadest possible audience.

I have recently bought an IPAD 2 for my girlfriend and have encountered a problem with purchasing apps through my itunes account. It is requesting that I not only enter my pasword (which I know) but answer my old account questions, which I have forgotten the answers to. It had since locked me out of changing my questions for eight hours. Is there any number I can call to prove that I am the real owner of my itunes account so my girlfriend will be able to use her ipad to purchase new apps without having to go through the trouble of using one of my other apple devices? Random information: I believe my questions were set back in 2007 when I purchased my first ipod nano, since then I have used this same itunes account for my own ipod touch and ipad 2 and my girlfriends iphone 1st generation. I have never run into a problem regarding my questions before on any of these devices

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

Reboot your iPad and then see if you can set the security questions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Selling old iPhone 3g - erased, removed sim questions for new buyer

I have an old 3g that we have service turned off on, i did the erase all content thing and removed the sim, phone restared and said I needed to hook it up to itunes and it needed the sim againput the sim back in, got the phone back to what looks like day one (then removed the sim after itunes set it up as a new phone vs using exsiting restore or backup).
So now the phone has no sim and everything appears to be there in terms of the basic apps nothing i can see has any of my info or history on it.
My question is if I sell this like this how does the new buyer install apps on it thru the app store, i can access wifi and watch youtube stuff but when I tried to install a free app but it just keeps asking for existing or new acct, if they setup a new acct and that 3g has no sim card will they be able to access and download content to it (also if they setup a new acct in itunes can they purchase apps with that too)?
I am pretty tech dumb when it comes to that sort of thing, noting sensitive on the phone realy even before the erase, but if i sell it like this I just didnt want the new buyer to somehow be able to buy apps on my acct (the itunes existing acct stuff is all blank I checked it), but i do want them to be able to get apps on the phone for their own use thru wifi so I am guessing they just have to create their own itunes acct and then even without the sim it would let them grab apps?
Or do they need a sim, if so will att give them a blank or is the phone basically useless without it (I thought I heard never give out my sim even tho the phone is deactivated I wasnt sure on security).
Thanks for anyone who can clear this up for me, don't wanna sell it and find out i didn't follow some rule of safety for my own acct etc.

    Settings > FaceTime > Off
Settings > iCloud > (Scroll Down) Delete Account
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Content and Settings.
In that order and you're good. I've never removed a SIM before selling and I haven't had any problems. Also they would need a new SIM to activate sevice so any potential for your information going to the device after sold is gone.
    Hope that helps

  • TOP questions for Eseries devices - not so new!

Just noticed that the thread titled:
TOP questions for Eseries devices - start here [new]
Really isn't so new dated 30-Cot-2007 11:48 AM - last edited on 30-Oct-2007 11:48 AM
The post suggests that the first thing to do is update to the latest version of software.
Alas the last update for E72 was 27 October 2010 which is flawed!  I know as my phone has misbehaved since installing it and I see other users reporting similar if not the same issues here.
    *#0000# reports version 052.005.217.11
Question - How does one down grade to previous version?
The post then suggests "If you still experience problems, you can try if formatting your Eseries device helps. Format the device by dialling *#7370#. The device will request a security code, the default code is 12345 unless you have changed it."
Well actually on the E72 this does nothing!  I Type in *#7370# and its displayed to me and nothing else happens.  If I enter *#0000# I get the version number so it seems the software/firmware does not understand the code above!
I did try 'factory settings' option from one of the control panel menu's instead at some point of my misery but was surprised by just how little effect that had - many things were not reset.
If your still reading, I thought I would share some steps I have found to sometimes help on E72 when it appears to hang / stall:
    1. Try holding down the home button and if the running applications bar is shown try closing the applications by pressing the delete (backspace) key.
2.- If that fails try pressing the off button and selecting 'offline' mode - This sometimes works - if it does then try previous point before going back to an online mode such as 'general'.
    3. If that fails - try holding down the power button to turn device off - that sometimes works! But sometimes the keyboard lights simply stay on until the battery goes dead...
    4. Remove the battery wait a moment and then re-insert battery.  You may then have to enter the time and date. Do check your alarms - during GMT I noticed all my alarms would have incremented by an hour!  Not seen this since BST started.

Very strange - or perhaps not that strange but just another issue....  I tried the Hard Reset code again at this time it worked!!!  I'm now re-entering my details and remembering what I didn't back up   But if it fixes my issues it will be worth it.
FYI from another fine post I found:
    FOR SOFT-RESET:
    - at Standby Screen type-in => *#7780#
It will ask for “Restore all phone settings-phone’ll restart….”
Then it asks for security code enter factory default => 12345
    FOR HARD-RESET:
    - at Standby Screen type-in => *#7370#
It will ask for “Restore all phone settings-phone’ll restart….”
Then it asks for security code enter factory default => 12345
FOR FLASHING- TOTAL RESTORE: (Do this if your phone does not boot up)
    1) Remove the battery, and then wait for about 20 min or so before putting it back
    2) Press and hold these three keys together -Green dial key, Star key[*], Three key [3]
    3) switch ON the phone.
    4) Do not let go the three keys until you see the WELCOME screen displayed and just let it complete the boot process

I can not export photos onto DVD. After I click export, close iPhoto, click Finder, At this point I can't find the file to burn. (copy to be used on Windows) Sorry for the lame question....new to mac

So it sounds like you are trying to burn a DVD with photos on it so the photos can be either transferred to or displayed on a Windows PC, is that correct?
For the purposes of this I am going to assume you are using iPhoto '11.
Gather the photos you want to burn to DVD in one album in iPhoto. This is not absolutely necessary but it sure makes things easier for me.
Select that album, then go to the File menu and select Export...
In the dialog that shows up, select the File Export tab. Select the setting you want to use for export. Click the Export button.
Another dialog will show up. Set the location to Desktop and click the New Folder button. Name the folder something nice and descriptive and click the Create button.
Click the OK button. Quit iPhoto as the rest of this work will be done in the Finder.
You will now have a folder on your desktop with that nice descriptive name. Find it and select it. Go to the File menu and from it select Burn "Descriptive folder name" to Disc...
Insert a blank DVD when prompted.
Let the finder complete the work and eject the disc afterwards.
    That's it. Best of luck.
