Click here for information. If you can't reset them through the method described in that article or by sending yourself a rescue email(the email may take a few hours to arrive), contact the iTunes Store staff via the link in the 'Additional Information' section.
It isn't possible to create a rescue email address without correctly answering two of the questions. Nobody on these boards can reset them for you.

  • 2 questions for all the iTunes PROS out there

I currently have the latest itunes software. I have recently formatted my pc, and need to add all my songs back into the itunes library. I have over 7000 songs all in the general folder
"Music". I do to File->Add folder to library->Then select that folder. It works for a bit scanning though files asks me to convert some, then it just crashes..... It would take me soooo long to do this folder by folder, does any1 know what is going on?
Since i have formatted my pc, when i plug my ipod in it says that it has been synced up to another itunes would i like to delete it all, any way around this? Or maybe can i somehow sync my ipod to my itunes, thus fixing the problem in my first question?
Thx soo much for any help

When your iPod is set to update automatically you just need take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos and photos as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • QuickTime Movie Files Won't Convert For iPod using iTunes and QuickTime Pro

I've got a ton, and I mean a ton of QuickTime movie files of music videos that I want to convert to use on the iPod. I tried using "Convert Selection For iPod" in the Advanced Menu on iTunes, but got the following message trying convert a QuickTime file of U2's Beautiful Day:
""Beautiful Day" could not be converted because this file does not allow for saving or conversion."
I purchased QuickTime Pro hoping that the features on Pro would convert the file. When I opened the same file to convert using QuickTime Pro, "Export" under the file menu was grayed out so I couldn't select it.
You'd think that an APPLE QuickTime Movie file that can be played on APPLE'S iTunes and APPLE'S QuickTime Player would be able to be converted to be used in APPLE'S iPod player. (Anybody notice how APPLE is capitalized to point out that the the hardware, software and file formats are ALL Apple?)
Instead I wasted money buying QuickTime Pro when it won't do what I specifically bought it for. Now I have all these QuickTime files which won't play on the iPod.
Can anybody provide some help or assistance on how to accomplish what I'm trying to accomplish???

If the file doesn't allow saving or conversions then it is protected by DRM (Fairplay).
Nothing can help QuickTime Pro convert protected files.

  • I need to find my serial number for IPOD from itunes

Can anyone help me locate my ipod serial number from i tunes. I have been sent some infor on how to do this but I have found it confusing as  i am not technical. Can you tell me step by step how to do it in simple non jargon fashion. Thanks

    From an apple support page:
    iTunes
    Connect iPod to your computer.
When iPod appears in iTunes, select it on the left side of the iTunes window under Devices.
Click the Summary tab, and your iPod's serial number will display on screen. For iPod shuffle (1st and 2nd generation), click the Settings tab.
If your iPod is not currently connected to your computer, but has been connected to your iTunes library before, follow these instructions:
Hold down the Control key and choose Help > About iTunes (Windows) or iTunes > About iTunes (Mac).
    Release the Control key.
As the iTunes and QuickTime version information scrolls, you will see the serial number of the last connected iPod as well as the last connected iPhone's serial number and IMEI.
    Tips:
Hold down the Option key (Shift key in Windows) to reverse the scrolling.
Press the Space bar to pause the scrolling.
You can copy this information to the Clipboard and and paste it into a document.
In Mac OS X, choose Edit > Copy (or Command-C).
    In Windows, press Control-C.
Note: In iTunes, when you view the iPod serial number, you can choose Edit > Copy to put the serial number on the Clipboard. You can then paste the serial number into an email or web page (for registration, for example).

  • Pre-sales question for IPOD (file extensions)

I would like to buy my mother a IPOD Nano 2gb for her upcoming birthday, but have a quick question on the way it formats the files on my PC.
Do I HAVE to have Itunes or any other software on my pc in order to place .mp3's on the IPOD?
If I have to have software in order to place songs on the IPOD, will it change anything on my PC, for an example, will it change any of my file extensions or file names of any of my music from .mp3 to .???
I have a DELL mp3 player and I love how I can just throw any song at it from Microsoft Window's File Explorer, and it'll play it.. I've never used or messed around with an ipod.
    Thanks in advanced,
    chris

    Yes.

iTunes will not change the format of your music unless you explictly tell it to do so, or import unprotected WMA files into iTunes under Windows, in which case duplicates will be created in a format which is directly usable in iTunes. The Mac OS X version of iTunes will not handle WMA songs.

  • Copyright Question - two ipods with iTunes Music

I apologize if this was answered in an FAQ or some other obvious place. I have googled around and can't seem to find the answer.
I have just purchased my wife an iPod for Christmas, making us a two iPod household (including mine). Until this point my wife and I have shared music CDs. She would keep one for a bit in the car or at the house and after a bit I would take it and listen to it in my car, at the gym etc.
How do we do this with iTunes? If I purchase an Album on iTunes, can I listen to it for a while on my iPod and then somehow transfer it to her account for her to then listen to for a while on her iPod? Does the copyright regulations of iTunes allow for sharing music around on different iPods?
Thanks in advance for any assistance. We do try our best to stay legal on all fronts in the digital age!

Thanks for the speedy answer to a newb! So far the wife and I are LOVING our iPODs, and due to the quality of the nano Gen4 (they are SOLID) are considering our first MAC purchase (heck I have wanted to go MAC since Windows Me )
Just so I understand, if I copied the iTunes my wife purchased onto a thumb drive, then put the drive in my PC and opened itunes and did Add to Library, I could then select that drive and import them in? And I could then sync those iTunes to my iPod?
    Thanks again!!

  • Question for iPod Touch/Windows Vista Users

Has any other Vista users out there had any problems syncing?
As long as I don't sync large amounts of data, it works fine...but when I sync a lot of songs at once, or just 1 full length movie, I get playback problems. Some songs will skip and stutter, but that can usually be fixed by recopying the songs individually. Movies (even ones downloaded from iTunes) will not play all the way through. They will either crash and take me back to the videos menu, or they will reset the iPod Touch. Because movies are so large, simply resyncing them will not solve the problem.
I have tried resetting and restoring the iPod Touch, and reinstalling iTunes, and nothing has corrected this problem. I don't think it is a problem with the iPod Touch, because this doesn't happen when I sync using a friend's Windows XP computer.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts on how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance for your help:)

I have the exact same problem - point for point, my iPod touch is doing exactly as you described. I have tried all sorts of things, but to no avail.
You added a new USB card to your machine, and that has solved the problem? May I ask if you still use your original 'onboard' USB for all of your other peripherals, leaving the new USB card for just your iPod? perhaps it was one of your other peripherals that was causing the problem. Just a thought, but I am certainly glad to hear that the problem is solvable. USB cards aren't very expensive, perhaps I should go invest in one to see if it solves the problem for me too.
    Thanks!

  • Questions for ipod nano 5g owners

+Please can anybody convince me to get a 5g 16 gigs nano? I'm a bit scared to go for this new buy and sell my old 3g nano.+
Would really appreciate if u guys can give me a feedback on these few questions. I don't intend to use the camera much at all and I don't want to play videos on it...still im a bit concerned about the battery.
    1) How is the battery quality? Experiencing any troubles?
I do own a 3g ipod nano and the battery rocks, I can listen to some music for about 2 hours per day and go like that for a week or so. 4g ipod nano was a real lemon if compared to the 3g...wondering if the 5g is as good as the 3g or not.
    2) What about the flashy colours that have been used? Are they looking good? I honeslty really liked the satinated aluminium and the soft colouring of the 4g better.
    3) The clicking wheel is that rather thick? I do remember that the 4g nano had an incredible light clicking wheel when i was touching it it felt like it could broke if really pressed hard. 3g has not that issue, it feels very sturdy and compact.
    4) I also noticed that in many pic sonline there is a sort of a gap between the clicking wheel of the 5g and the cover of the ipod itself. Is that something that all the owners of the 5g have or there are only some bad manifactured ones out there?

    1. I haven't been able to test the battery power extensively due to the fact that I've been playing around with transferring videos from my iPod to my PC, and I just installed a hookup in my car so I could listen to it in there, and this hookup also charges the battery... BUT I did play Sudoku on it the other day while I was waiting for a pizza to cook. The timer had me clocked at 14 minutes after it was all said and done (I thought I was pausing it but it kept counting the time, and the screen never went idle). After I finished, I looked at the battery power and it had barely gone down at all, maybe a slight smidgen at most. With my 4th Gen, I could play a game of Sudoku for about 8-9 minutes and that could drain a full battery anywhere from a quarter to halfway down, so in comparison, 5th gen battery life is MUCH better then 4th gen, though I suspect I may have had a faulty battery in the old one...
    2. Personally, I love the new colors and casing on the new nano's. Very shiny.
    3. I played around with my 3rd, 4th and 5th gen to see what you ment about the click wheel. The 3rd gen is thicker, but with the 4th and 5th gen, you are dealing with a slimmer nano, so Apple most likely slimmed down the click wheel to compensate for room. My 4th gen held up well, I don't see why the 5th gen would be much different.
    4. I think any gaps you may have seen from pics might have been a trick of light and shadow. All Nanos have extremely tiny spaces between the click wheel and the casing if you look close enough. For the 5th gen, I think it might be the aluminum finish, and that the click wheel is raised ever so slightly on each side, that makes the gap on that nano seem larger then it really is.
I hope this helps, but of course, this is only my version, I'm sure others will put there two cents in too.

  • How do I turn off automatic updating for iPod on iTunes?

I am about to buy the new iPod and I just recently downloaded iTunes 6 so I can actually have music on it when I buy it. Now I know it's possible, but I'm not sure how to turn off the automatic updates for the iPod. See I just want the songs on my computer long enough to put them on my iPod and then I plan to take them off. Any help would be appreciated.

  • "Artists by Album" column display for iPod (in iTunes 7) doesn't work

I'm a big fan of the "Artists by Album" column option in iTunes 7, as it helps me to keep my single-artist albums and compilation albums well-sorted and separated from each other. Love it lots; it's my favorite way to view my rather large music collection.
However...I just bought an 80gb iPod, and when I sync it to my iTunes and try to view its catalog of songs using the "Artists By Album" column, I get this weirdly disordered list of songs. I can't exactly figure out what the sorting method is, but it seems to have something to do with track and disc numbers.
I get pretty much the same result in when I view my iPod's music library through using the "Albums by Year" column option. Are these two column sorts not supported by the 5G iPods? do I just have to settle for straight "Artist" or "Album" sorts for the time being?
I tried to dig up some explanation for this but haven't found anything that helps either in Apple support or these forums. Any ideas/info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, there is no "Artists by Album" feature for the iPod. You can suggest it here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipod.html. Hope you can live with only Album and Artist! At least for the time being...

  • Coverting question for Ipod and Quicktime

I edited a movie to wmv (im using a pc). Then transfered it to mpeg1 thinking i can play it on the ipod. Didn't work so that I converted the mpeg1 to mpg4 and the format to play on the ipod, for some reason, quicktime converted the file with no sound, and it's doing it over and over again. How can I go about playing my movie on the ipod?

Search these forums and you will get a clear answer to your questions. This has already been asked many times here. THe general answer has been no there is no way of streaming music from the ipod touch to the airport all by itself. THe ipod touch can receive wifi from the airport and then allow you to surf the internet on the safari app from the ipod touch.

  • Charging/Power Support for iPod without iTunes Installed

I have an 80 GB iPod that I load and manage on my home system. Is there a way that I can plug the iPod into the USB port on a Windows laptop that does NOT have iTunes installed and listen to music already on the device? I want only the power from the laptop USB which is a corporate machine, i.e., can't put iTunes on it. I tried it and I get the "Do Not Disconnect" screen and the device is unusable.
      Windows XP Pro

Look on the system for new hardware found. Just eject it there and it should allow the regular screen to come up. If I remember correctly it comes up in the lower right hand side of the bar at the bottom of the windows screen.

  • Capacity indicator for iPod in iTunes:

With iTunes open and my iPod connected, when I select Devices: What in the world is the "Other" (Orange bar) showing in my iPod "Capacity" bar? I have a iPod nano 2GB software version 1.3.1. I have 135 songs (Blue bar for Audio) and 225 photos (Yellow bar for Photos). But what in the world is the Orange bar (671.4 MB) indicating??????????????????????????????
    RSVP <edited by host>

The storage space taken up by "Other" can be made up of, notes or files of any kind you've added to the iPod whilst using it as a hard disk or album artwork. Or sometimes when the iPod data base has become corrupt.
There will always be a few MBs of used space under "other" but if it's in GBs it's unusually large. This often happens when the iPod data base becomes corrupt.
If the iPod is enabled for disk use, you can look at the folders on the iPod through Explorer or Finder and delete anything you don't want.
If it's a corruption it will probably need to be restored, see how to restore the iPod to factory settings which will erase the iPods contents and reclaim the used space.
Then reload the music from iTunes.
