Question for Mike - LaCie FireWire & iDVD5

Mike - Can you help please ? John Beatty suggested I post this to you :
I have just bought a LaCie Double Layer bus-powered Firewire DVD. It is an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6550A device. The drive came with Toast 6 Titanium, which is now installed.
I also have an internal Matshita DVD reader/ CD writer as part of the original G4 setup.
When I attempt to burn a project in iDVD5.0.1, the internal drive opens up and I get a message telling me to insert a DVD, even though this is not a DVD writer. I've tried Control-clicking the Burn icon, but nothing different happens. There is no option for drive selection in the iDVD menu structure either.
I don't really want to spend ages writing Disk Images, then writing to the LaCie, and I've searched this forum for a similar issue - but 'fraid I can't find anything similar. Does anyone have any suggestions that will enable iDVD to recognise the external LaCie ?
Appreciate any advice

RE: How do I get iDVD5 to recognise my external DVD Drive ?
Don't skip this route - the amount of "extra" time is almost zero - in effect iDVD is doing this anyway behind the scenes to some degree. And separating encoding from burning makes a lot of sense. I always "Save as Disk Image" and burn separately.
And there is a guy that works for LaCie that frequent this forum:

I think you just need the proper disk burning profile from LaCie. You could probably e-mail Mike at the address on his profile. Or post a new thread titled "Question for Mike - LaCie Firewire and iDVD5"
John B.

Mike
Thanks. I tried burning a disk image for a 48min video in iDVD. That worked fine when previewed. I then burnt it to DVD in Toast 6.1 using the Copy (Image File option) Tab.
The resultant DVD will not play in either my internal Drive, nor my normal DVD player - which is a multi region player. The DVD is only recognised in the external LaCie. BUT, playing the movie only shows chapter 1 of 12, and there is no sound at all. (despite the preview showing it to be ok).
As a test, I burnt the movie in iDVD5 using the Pfurz & Hurz plugins. It burnt ok, but I got the same result - chapter 1 only and no sound.
My supplier for the LaCie rive suggested I also try and export the movie from iMovie to a Quick Time compression at full DV quality to make sure that worked. It doesn't - despite a 35Gb spare capacity on the Hard Drive, I either get a complete system hang with hard restarts required, Error 36 or the occasional short clip compressing OK. I'm at a loss - the fact that I get a decent image file from iDVD indicated there's nothing wrong with the video files...
Any suggestions ??!

  • Formatting LaCie firewire drive - Powerbook G4

Hi, I have a 40GB LaCie firewire drive that is doing something funny on Disk Utility. It only shows as having 18GB available, and I have tried to delete it using Disk Utility to no avail.
+Question: Can anyone suggest a way to again totally wipe and regain my 40GB?+
Also, any suggestions on how to expand my 1GHz PowerPC G4 12" Powerbook with 768 MB DDR SDRAM would be welcome, as I'd rather keep this machine going well at the moment and save up for a new 'book, love the black version!

    Hi Matt,
Thanks, I just did that, and it now shows:

Er, I definelty thought it was a 40GB. Could it be I was mistaken, and it's only a 20GB?!!

  • Serial ata 133 vs ata 66 vs lacie firewire external d2 drive speed issues

I have an older power mac tower that has built in ata 66. I have a large music collection (300 gigs) that resides in a lacie firewire (D2) external drive. When I make a play list, itunes makes me wait about 20 seconds to create the playlist which drives me crazy (spinning beachball). I also use the computer for logic pro.
I want to increase the internal capacity of this computer. I am wondering....is the external firewire drive faster than what an ata 133, 7200 rpm internal drive would be. Secondly, is ata 133 really that much faster than ata 66. Thirdly, does anyone know if drive speed has anything to do with the itunes sluggishness?
    Any suggestions?

Wow. I was thinking of posting a similar question myself. I have a G3 as a hardware router (for filtering) and I was wondering how to speed it up.
The research I've done so far has yielded these tidbits:
    1) ATA 133 isn't much faster than ATA 66 for a single drive. Why? Most drives don't transfer data quickly enough to use the whole 66 Mb/sec bandwidth of ATA 66 anyways. The newest drives that have burst speeds above 66 Mbs could make a difference, but burst speeds are rarely achieved. I've been looking and I've found lots of ATA 100 drives, but no ATA 133 drives. You'd have to get a 10k Raptor or a RAID setup to see an appreciable difference from ATA 66 to ATA 133.
    2) The upper speed limit of FW 400 is 50 Mb/sec. However, the data goes through the FW bridge, which then gets fed to the native IDE drive on the other side. This takes time. External FW drives of the same RPM and protocol (ATA 33, etc) are slightly slower than their internal brethren.

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

  • Confused! LaCie FireWire 800 PC Card

    Greetings!
I purchased an Iomega 250 GB external hard drive. Because my notebook doesn't have an 800 Mbps port I also purchased a LaCie FireWire 800 PC card. I was aleady to hook all of this up today, when I discovered that the LaCie card has 2 FireWire 800 bilingual ports compatible with FireWire 400/1394a products. It also has 1 FireWire 400 6-pin port. The Iomega ext. hard drive has 2 FireWire 800 (1394b) ports and 1 FireWire 400 port and a USB 2.0 port.
Does a "bilingual" port on the LaCie mean that both a 1394a and a 1394b cable will work in the same port? If not, then how do you get the LaCie FireWire 800 PC card to work at 800Mbps?
    Thank you in advance!!!
tenntooter (back again after a long time out of town.)

The information provided was helpful. I purchased the iomega external hard drive and an Lacie card, but I haven't been able to get these working properly. I only worked on this for a short time though, and I now have time to work on this some more. I'm sure that I've overlooked something. I'll get it to work I'm certain.
    Thank you!

  • 10.4.5 Update Causing Error -36 with LaCie Firewire External Hard drives

I have two LaCie Firewire external drives, one for extra storage and one for backups. Since the 10.4.5 update, I've been unable to copy files consistently from my external drives to my hard drive or other external drives. The disks mount, and run like normal - I have my iTunes library on one drive, and all the tracks play normally. I am able to copy very small files, but anything over a couple mb gives me an error -36. I've run disk utilities etc on the external drives and they appear to be just fine. In order to see if it's an OS problem, I hooked the external drives (in a daisy chain) to my girlfriend's ibook. She's running Jaguar still, and had no problems. So it appears that it's an OS upgrade problem. One note, I didn't disconnect the drives when I ran the upgrade, but then, I never have for upgrades, only full OS installs. Is anyone else having this problem and know of any fixes?

    Libby,
Backup is unable to make a restorable by Disk Utility backup. You can restore pieces of the software as outlined in my FAQ about backing up user data:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
But to be able to restore a backup with Disk Utility, you need a cloning utility to have made the backup.
I suggest starting a new thread here, where someone else could help you out better:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=752&start=0
First off, you'll get a wider audience who may be able to solve your problem. Secondly, responses to you won't confuse the original poster with solutions that don't apply to them. And thirdly, you'll know for certain whether or not a response applies to you.

  • 10.4 Installation on External Lacie Firewire Drive

    Hi -
I have a number of Macs running 10.4 and each has an external Lacie firewire drive attached, with a partition for an external startup drive. I recently bought a new Lacie 250 GB Porsche firewire drive to rplace a smaller Porsche model, but I cannot install OSX 10.4 on it because the install disk does not recognize the external drive as an installation source. I have upgraded the firmware on the drive but that has made no difference. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be and help me figure out how to install the operating software on the external drive? Thanks for your help.
    Shelly

Thanks for your reply. The drive is actually being used on a G4 tower that's about 6 years old. I partitioned the drive into two sections: about 7GB for the operating system and the remainder of the 250GB for backup purposes. Neither volume shows up on the Tiger insdtall disk as a source for the installation (by the way, I also tried it on my G3 iBook, with the same results).

  • Questions for I/O interface experts

I have few questions for I/O interface experts:
I have a Power Mac G5 2.3 Ghz 8GB of RAM, PCI-X slots, and am running Final Cut Studio FC version 6. I currenly have an HD project on my timeline (uploaded directly form a P2 card via 400FW), and I'd like to be able to output on a HD VTR deck as wellas a BetacamSP deck:
    1) which AjA Kona cards (3, LHe, LH) is right for me?
    2) did you personally experience, or are you aware of any issues with this Kona card and Final Cut version 6? Any tips before I purchase?
    3) will this card allow me to output uncompressed HD, that is, the same quality I uploaded?
    4) in which of the slots on my back tower does it go? 64bit 100MHz or 64bit 133MHz?
    Cheers,
    Rinaldo

I think FireWire is probably the best route.
The main difference between the two seem to be that the 1814 has more inputs and the ADAT interface, the 410 has more outputs.
So are you planning on recording, then go for the 1814.
If you envision that 2 mics and 2 inputs is enough for your recording needs and you eventually want to mix surround you'd need the 410 as it is the one with enough outputs.
If you want specific advice about interfaces I suggest you ask in the Logic forums as those users would be most experienced with this aspect of an audio system.

  • Mail application, Silverkeeper and Lacie Firewire external drive

    I have the following set-up:
    G5 PPC iMac
    OS X (10.4.11)
Lacie Firewire 250Gb external hard disk
    Silverkeeper 1.1.4
I have used this software many times and it has worked perfectly, flawlessly even, EXCEPT for one issue.
When I am at home I back up my Mac HD regularly to the Lacie. I also always do this just before I travel.
When I travel, I take the Lacie HD (and cables) with me, connect it to whatever PPC Mac is available, select the Lacie drive as my start-up disk, and then use it as if it were my G5 at home.
When I return home, I reconnect the Lacie to the G5 and back-up from the G5 (Source) to the Lacie (Destination) using Silverkeeper with the following option selected:
Preferences/Backup Actions/IF A FILE HAS A NEWER DATE ON THE DESTINATION COPY TO SOURCE
However, the selection of this option fails to copy any of the e-mail I have sent or received using the (Mac) Mail application from the Lacie drive to the G5. For each e-mail I have sent or received, I get this:
+The message from XXX <[email protected]> concerning “RE: ZZZ” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download i+t.
This message is in the right e-mail box, but there is no header or field information of any kind, never mind any text in the body of the message.
I have no idea what this message means. The Mail application on my G5 iMac (and its 'mirror' on the Lacie drive) is set up to retrieve and send mail through POP and SMTP accounts and does not work with webmail. Furthermore, the Mail application checks for and sends e-mail automatically at fixed pre-programmed intervals according to its configuration.
What therefore does '..+.has not been downloaded from the serv+er.' mean. What server?
And what does '+You need to take this account online in order to download it+.' mean? I have to be on-line in order to send and receive e-mail in the first place, and the Mail application works perfectly when running on the Lacie drive. The e-mails all APPEARED in their correct mailboxes in Mail on the Lacie drive. Silverkeeper simply fails to back up sent and received e-mails from the Lacie drive to the G5 HD. Also, if I now (after having copied from source to destination as above) make the Lacie drive the start-up disk, the e-mails sent and received on my travels are no longer in their mailboxes, but have instead been replaced with the messages identical to that in italics given above.
Any help in solving this would be hugely appreciated. I have already lost quite a few e-mails and hope not to lose more.
    Many thanks.
I appreciate that it is possible to configure the Mail app. to leave e-mails on the server for a month after first downloading them to Mail, or to remove them from the server only when they are removed from the Inbox, but I suspect that would drive me mad. Also I have rules and filters set up to send the incoming mails to customised mailboxes that are not in the Inbox, so that second option might equate to immediate removal from the server.

Seems Silver Keeper no longer keeps up, let me sugest..

  • Lacie firewire drives in series?

I've been recording audio to a Lacie firewire drive. My internal Raptor drive is full with plug-ins. I need another drive for just plug ins. Has anyone had any success with 2 Lacie drives in series? One for audio recording and the other streaming samples. I was hoping I could put BFD2 on the 2nd firewire, and some of its sample libraries. Thanks

Sure external devices can cause issues with your Mac if it's causing some kind of hardware problem with the Firewire bus-- drawing too much power, over or under voltage etc.. Some iMacs just have problems with the FW ports themselves. Sometime resetting the SMC will fix it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US
I have two FW800 drives from OWC daisy chained and I have not had any issues at all. I would try and isolate the two drives if possible to see if the problem persists. Disconnect one of the drives for a few days and use just one drive. Then switch and connect only the other drive for a few days. Then maybe try one of them on FW800 and the other on USB. The FW400 and 800 share the same bus so it may not be any differnt testing one on each if it ends up being a power issue. I wouldn't think it's a power issue though because the external drives have their own power and should not be drawing any power from the computer. But you never know

  • Lacie firewire 800 and powerbook

I am having trouble tranferring Final Cut Express and iMovie files over to my LaCie firewire 800 250GB Extreme. I get an error -50. Any idea what is wrong? It seems to only be those files.
    thanks

David, yep that's the exact drive I was looking at!
So you chain two of 'em together with FW 800?
"Uses the ExpressCard/34 flash card slot for ingesting."
I presume you mean the new SxS cards go in the ExpressCard slot? I was aware that was the case, which is cool!
Will that FW800 connection be quick enough to edit from? It is with my current DV workflow, but with HD content?

  • Question for you Deathstalker

    Hi Richard.
I have a question for you about the MSI K7N2G-LISR (NVIDIA nForce2 IGP) motherboard we were discussing.
If this board has integrated graphics, why do I need a video card? I had someone else ask me the same thing but I didn't know the answer.
    Thanks
    Mike

Hi Mike, I not sure if I should step in and put in this reply, but couldn't stop myself not to as this is quite important.
Mobos that comes with on board/integrated/shared Memory Graphics usually dun ends up giving you good framerates and graphics details. I have a friend who spent Sin 2000 over dollars to D.I.Y a creative slix look alike com with on board graphics has regretted not getting a proper mobo with AGP slot. The graphics that are produced on his com are like running a TNT2 Riva 32MB card for games like warcraft 3 and any latest 1st person shooting games... juz imagining it...
I'm the type of person who are more for graphics and smoothness of gameplays and details of model as I do some 3D designs and picture designing. I juz dun understand why there are still people going for onboard graphics and complaining about poor fps produced which they should have blame themselves for it X( ... It's good that you've pointed out your doubts on that...
    All the Best...  :D !!!

I am looking for Mike Manzheliy. Mike, you helped with a quesiton I had regarding averaging and the FIFO buffer. I had a follow up question based on your response. Could you email me at [email protected] so I can ask my follow-up. This would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know of a "cheap" mic.  The Rode VideoMics are extremely popular among videographers who use DSLRs.  The mic mounts to the hot-shote (just as an attachment point... it's not electronic) and it's short wire connects to the mic in port on the side of the camera.
The sound quality and directional nature of the mic is very good... but I think the basic mic is (the "VideoMic" ... not the "VideoMic Pro" nor stereo versions of the VideoMic) is about $150.
Perhaps you can catch a Black Friday sale.

  • Boot from Lacie FireWire Combo Drive?

I am waiting for my newly purchased "Snow iMac" to arrive and have run into some problems. I have checked on the Apple website and to my knowing i'm getting the Summer 2001 model. On the specification sheet i looked at on the Apple website it says that my model will have a CD-RW Combo type drive (reads cd's and dvd's and burns cd's). However on the item description i got on eBay - i bought the iMac on eBay - it says it only has a CD-ROM drive! In the worst case scenario it would turn up and have a CD-ROM drive, and i only have Tiger on a DVD. I do have a Lacie FireWire drive that reads DVD's would i be able to boot from it with the Tiger dvd and install Tiger that way?
    Thanks, Joe.

Joe,I'm glad you went with that other iMac Snow - saves on worrying about the RAM upgrade for a bit - and was cheaper in the end!

Here are the iMac specs: Low End Mac. No iMac G3 Slot Loader had a combo drive from new. The later ones had CD-RW drives which do not read DVDs. The Snow either has a DVD-ROM (500MHz) or a CD-RW (600MHz) so unless someone's been tinkering you're getting a CD-RW.
But you should be able to use the external FW drive just fine.
