Question for pros: should I keep this 23" ACD?

I have a new "23 six days to evaluate whether to keep or exchange it for a different one. I'm a pro photographer and this is my first large LCD other than the 17" on my MBP. I could use a little advice on whether to keep this or not for the following reasons:
Overall in normal conditions the illumination is even and there is little or no pink (magenta) tint. It calibrates well with my Eye-One puck. There is a little ghosting of white windows (like browsers) after they've been up several minutes but it's faint and they fade and that doesn't bother me too much, though I do notice it occasionally. The main issue is the backlight leakage in deep blacks when the room lights are down. It is in the lower part of the monitor, mostly concentrated in the corners. I do notice it in the uncommon photos that have a lot of black in them, mostly ones shot at night.
Is this common behaviour for all these monitors? I don't expect perfection but would like to know if this one should be returned for another, whether I can expect to find a perfect one. If it's typical for all LCDs I'm fine with this, but if it's not, perhaps I should be thinking exchange.
I've kind of decided to go Apple because Iezo (sp?) are kind of expensive and I've seen photographers on the galbraith forums complain about highly restricted angle of view on the Dells.
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.
dave

You should expect perfection and as a photograph you need to be sure of your display! Send it back direct and make an complain, don´t do what I did, expect Apple to take special care of pro people.
If you don´t get it fixed, turn it back! It´s several pro products out there ( maybe not so good looking), even if LaCie is a sometimes stange company, thay always been taking care of defect products (even after warranty is out).
Don´t accept any ghosting at all, not for that price!
Thats my advice, since I have 4 of them and after one yera they start to show up tha bad quality ( you know, the exact limit of the warranty must be calculated in
knowledge of this.........)

  • HT5312 I have been trying to reset my Apple security question for weeks, the site keeps taking me in circles!

What is the simple way to reset my Security questions?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Start here (change country if necessary) and navigate to 'Password and Security', reset your security questions using the link provided, you will receive an email to your rescue address, it has been reported that the email can take a while to arrive. Use the link in the email and reset your security questions.
If that doesn't help, you don't receive a reset email or you don't have a rescue address, you should contact AppleCare who will initially try to assist you with a reset email or if unsuccessful will pass you to the security team to reset your security questions for you.
If you are in a region that doesn't have international telephone support try contacting Apple through iTunes Store Support.

  • HT201342 This site doesn't seem to answer a basic question of "why should I open this new iCloud e-mail account?" What do I do with it?

Why should I open this new e-mail account?  What does it do or me? Under what circumstance would I use this new identity?

There's no reason to if you don't want to use it.  Apple is no longer issuing @me email addresses, and has moved to @icloud adresses.  They are just adding the @icloud address to your existing iCloud account so you'll have one in case you want to use it.  Email sent to either your @me or @icloud email address is routed to the same iCloud mail inbox.

  • I need language dictionnaries for spell checking/correcting. I have firefox nightly v.27.0a1. Should I keep this version and wait or go back to classic firefox?

The French and Arabic dictionaries seem to be not compatible with firefox nightly. I have the latest version: 27.0a1. Will updates be made in the coming future to fix that?
    Many thanks by advance!
    A loyal firefox user.

Do you confirm that I should download and use firefox "classic" version instead of nightly to be able to install the French / Arabic dictionary add-ons for spell checking/correcting when writing in the browser?

Hello Mac Nation, I have an old PowerMacG4 (2003) dual 1.25 that's been sitting. I dont think I can get much for it. Do these older PowerMac's have problems with the latest and greatest OS's, programs, etc? I mainly want to run Illustrator.

Howdy S.J.I. I have 11 Macs in my studio, from a Grape iMac running OS8.6 to the latest (almost) Intel Pro and my favorite is a vintage, heavily updated 2001 Digital Audio. I can't tell you what to do but I know what I would do: letting it sit neglected should be a crime. Dust it off and throw a little love at it and you might get a few surprises.
Things to consider: 10.5, a dual-layer DVD burner (OWC), memory (Crucial), SATA adapter (Sonnet) with a couple of fat drives, USB 2.0/Firewire 800 adapter (Sonnet), Airport (use the Airport slot not a PCI card if you can - performance will be better than you'd expect 'cause the Airport slot has its own bus connection).
What would you get from selling it? A couple hundred? Invest that money in it instead and - if you do it wisely - you can get a lot more than you'd expect.
P.S. That "heavily updated Digital Audio" I mentioned? Originally $4,500, I paid $1,800 in 2000, tossed $900 at it in upgrades over the last 5 years and I prefer it by a WIDE margin to my shiny new core-whatever Intels. It's personal.

  • HT5312 i need to change my security questions holy **** it should not be this hard

    seriously
    what the ****

What problem are you having with the instructions on that page ? if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should give you a reset link.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.
Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Question for pros

Ok this is my problem. I create a leave request page,
the employees log in. After they log in it takes them to a
calandar. On the calandar they request the leave by clicking a
check mark box next to the day they are requesting and hit submit.
And the record is updated. To prevent duplicate entrys in our
database, if the employee wants to request additional leave for
that month they login and return to the calandar. The calandar
already displays the days that they have prevously requested. Now
this is my problem. It displays the days they prevously requested
as planed, but I want to block the user from changing any of the
exising checkmarks from a prevous request. Is it possible to Gray
these out or hide these fields with checkmarks. Thanks for you help
    in advance.

Just set the attribute disabled="disabled" in the checkbox
    tag of those that
    they have already entered.

  • Easy questions for Pro about ASM block size

    hi
how can we change DB_BLOCK_SIZE in ASM (while instalation)
we have a default of 4096

As for databases 'later' is not possible. I'm not sure what happens when you choose another blocksize at creation time. ASM blocksize is only for metadata,it's not related to the actual database data (having the database blocksize) stored in ASM diskgroups.
These are the blocks which are used for extent maps in shared pool.o you dont need to worry about this blocksize difference.
here is the actul link that i copied over from(above)

  • Question for Pro Photogs - Sports Related - (Nikon)

Is there a way to "Tag" photos (like the Lock Photo works in PhotoMechanic) on your camera so Lightroom only displays the "tagged" photos on import? Obviously this would be a huge time saver when trying to transmit at let's say half time of a football game.

See John Beardsworth's "Locktastic" plug in here: http://www.photographers-toolbox.com/index.php
    It performs a smilar function.
If you already have Photo Mechanic, it's probably faster to do your initial selections in PM, then drag only the selected images to LR for importing and editing.

  • Question for Verizon Reps

    Hello,
I have a couple of questions:
I ordered an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 6+. Will they ship separately since the availability date was different? I believe the 6 was available on 9/19 and the 6+ on Oct. 7.
When I ordered the 6+ it asked me if I wanted to keep my 4G SIM. I answered yes but honestly didn't understand what the question was. Should I keep my SIM or get a new one?
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Anthony

Thanks for clarifying that. Is there any way to have the ship separately?
Or could I go to a Verizon store if they have them in stock?
I would love to get the iPhone 6 this Friday and can wait on the iPhone 6+
    until Oct. 7.

I have a Macbook Pro 15" that is three and a half years old.  Although it has slowed a bit, it still runs well and runs every program I need. Any tips for how to keep this old computer running well and in good health?
I have a 250 gig drive and try to keep at least 100 gigs unused at all times, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, back up with Time Machine and CrashPlan, and have OS X 10.7.3.
This was my first Mac since an old Apple II GS.  After that I used PC's and got really good at reformatting, replacing drives, reinstalling, defragging, resolving software conflicts, etc.  Since switching back to Macs (five in my extended family now), I haven't had to do any of those things. So, although, the cost is three times as much, the aggrevation has been ten times less.
I'm retired and living on a fixed income and would therefore like to keep this computer running as opposed to constatntly upgrading.
    That said, any tips?
    Thanks
It does have a crack on the left of the screen case about 3/4'' up from the bottom.  I've posted that as another question.

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Adding more RAM, if feasible, and a new, faster hard drive may also help pep it up a little.

ok, so i bought a imac 27 about 4 months ago, and now they release a new one!  ****... So my question is, should I sell this one (which by the way is the i5 2.8 with 1 gb 5750 and 4gb ram) and buy the new imac 27 i5,or keep the one i have and buy more ram. I mostly use my computer for photoshop cs5 and illustrator cs5 for graphics out put as well as surfing the web and music.
Please give me you thoughts on what I should do!!  Thanks  lot!

The new iMac is about 25% or so faster than your current iMac(comparable model would be the 3.1ghz version). There are a couple of things that you will benefit from such as the dual Thunderbolt/Mini Display ports/ which may help with multitasking. The video card in the new iMac again the comparable model being the 3.1ghz is a lotttttttt better than the current one that you have. So thinking of the long run those few things may be beneficial for you to upgrade(but it depends on what is important to you).
I had the 2.93ghz i7 version that I just bought in March this year and I turned around and sold it about a week before the new iMac's were announced. I got about $1600 for it, yeah I took a loss but to me it was worth it because my new iMac performs that much better. Now keep in mind I went from i7 to i7...3.4ghz i7 with the 2gb video card. Now I have dual thuderbolt/mini display ports. I have noticed significant gains in my video editing and also in my gaming. So to me it was definitely worth the upgrade!
One last thing, I would not have sold my 2.93 i7 and then bought the 3.1ghz i5, the big reason is because HT(hyper threading), it's only on the i7 model(3.4ghz)... If you take a look at some of the bench marks on engadget, maclife, macrumors, macworld, ****Barefeats.com(they really get into benchmarking)*** you will see charts that will help you make a better decision.
In closing I would say look into it, if you can get a good price out of your current iMac to put toward a new iMac then do it. Like others have mentioned to you, tech changes and Apple will change the tech in these machines next year or do a speed bump later this year or so. One last thing if you go from the 2.8 i5 up to the 3.4 i7, you would definitely see the difference (HT is a must especially for programs that utilize it. You can go to my youtube channel(mob1278) and take a look at my geekbench results.... my 2.93 i7 scored around 10500-11000(8gb ram)...my 3.4 i7 scores from 12700-13000 with 4gb ram....so yeah as you can see big difference. Basically the 3.4 i7 would perform similar or just under a 2.4ghz 8core 2010 Mac Pro which runs you about $3500 with no monitor.... it's your money spend it how you want....and Lion is only going to push it even more when it is released!

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

You should change your AppleID password NOW. And if it says it was registered under another AppleID, the thief has probably done it.

Reboot your iPad and then see if you can set the security questions.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
