Question for Ralph Johns, recording video chat?

Ralph,
I noticed that on one of the thread you said that you could record video chat using Quicktime pro. How do you do that, I have been looking and looking on the ichat pref and quicktime pro pref menu, can't seem to see how to setup recording of ichat????
Thanks

Hi Fredericlang,
Sorry my fault. I was partially remembering some of the work by EZ Jim who used to post here and who has given me a copy of his Blog. http://www.ralphjohnsuk.dsl.pipex.com/EZJim/EZJimpage7.html

  • What Mac should i get for serious Audio recording, Video editing and Graphic's?

Hey im new to Macs and i want to upgrade to one. My question is what one?.. My current system is not powerfull enough to handle what i am doing and i want to upgrade. I plan on using the mac for serious music recording with protools or cubase, video editing and effects with adobe premiere pro and after effects and graphics and web type stuff the rest of the adobe collection.. ex photoshop, dreamweavor, flash, illistrator, etc. So pretty much i need it to handle the adobe cs5.5 master collection and a music recording daw without bogging down. I do serious music recording and video editing and effects that need power behind it and runs smoothly. Any tips, tricks, advise, etc would be greatly appreachated!. Btw im a college student and plan on getting the discount prices in the adobe collection and hopefully the mac and would like to get the best quality computer for the best price!
    Thanks!

Buying refurbs from Apple is a great idea - except for my current iMac, all my Macs have been refurbished. However, I would only get a factory refurb from Apple - they come with the same warranty as new units and you can buy Applecare to extend that to a total of 3 years. And, as far as I know, the Apple online store is the only place where you can get factory refurbs.

  • How to use Quicktime to record video chats (Skype, Google  Hangouts)?

    Hi, all,
I'm making a movie that includes an interview of someone who lives out of state.  Thanks to modern technology, I can interview her without either of us having to travel farther than our computers.  But, thanks to modern technology, shouldn't there also be a way for me to record this interview for my movie?
I've figured out how to use QuickTime Player to take a screen recording that includes the audio from the computer, but there are several problems with this.
I downloaded Soundflower, set the Sound Output to "Soundflower (2ch)" in my System Preferences, then went to QuickTIme, where I started a screen recording and set the Microphone to "Soundflower (2ch)".  With a test run using music, I was able to capture the moving playhead and the audio.  The audio was pretty good, but not quite as good as if I were just listening to the music normally.
However, this process won't work for an interview setting.  While I was recording, I wasn't able to hear the music on my headphones.  Only afterwards was I able to hear the music.  This means that if I were interviewing someone, Quicktime would be recording her voice but I wouldn't be able to hear what she was saying until after I replayed the video.  Also, I have no idea if the person on the other end of the video chat would be able to hear me (I did leave the sound Input to "Internal microphone" with no trouble from Quicktime).
Is there a way to have Quicktime record the video and audio and for me to hear what's going on at the same time?
If not, what [free] software does this?
    Thanks!
P.S.  Does Quicktime have a limit to screen recording time?

Great info, thanks for the post!

  • How do you import a recorded video chat into iMovie 09?

I recorded a video chat, and I have tried to import it a few times, but every time it never imports and says there are no clips in the event. What do I do?
    thanks, Paige

    Hi,
I am having the same problem. The video I took appears as a .MOV file and nothing seems strange about it (plays in iTunes and iPhoto). I tried copying it to the desktop and importing, and that says nothing to import. It also does not appear in the iPhoto Movie browser in iMovie. Is there some sort of security setting that wouldn't allow an iChat video clip to appear in iMovie?
    I am using iChat 5.0.3 (745) and iMovie 8.0.6 (821).
    Regards,
    Keith

  • A ? for Ralph Johns or anyone else that could offer a viable explanation.

First of all I would like to thank all of you who spend your personal time here helping us out with these issues. You answer the same questions time and again or at least point the requesters in the direction of the previously posted answers. There is however one recurring issue that I am actually facing right now and I wonder whether someone could offer a viable explanation as to what is happening or why.
I have multiple Macs but primarily use either a 1.5 ghz G4 desktop or my 667 ghz tibook for my iChat conferences. My mother is also using a 1.5 ghz G4 desktop. Both are on OS 10.4.7 patched right up. I bought her a brand new iSight and connected it right out of the box. Without altering any settings or opening any ports on the modem or router, I was able to have iChat conferences with my mom.
Suddenly one day I am no longer able to chat (audio or video) text works.
Now whether she initiates or I initiate the conference we both get notifications of the impending conference but then a communication error occurs and she gets a message from iChat telling her she did not respond, and I get the same message indicating that I did not respond.
After much reading on this topic, in this forum I have found many similar stories, some have been resolved by deleting the preferences files associated with iChat some look like they may have needed to alter the configs of either modems or routers. In any event nothing really explains why something that was working without any alteration to config files or the opening of futher ports, just ceases to work.
There has to be a plausible, and explainable reason why.
Is it corruption at some level? Is it communication, or lack thereof? Although I think not because the application recognizes the fact that someone wants to confer with you.
Any thoughts or postulations would be much appreciated

You've asked my question - why did it work one day and not the next? The people I want to connect with can all connect with some people but not others. My brother and I all of a sudden cannot connect Wisconsin to Arkansas no matter what we try. We've done it all, down to re-installs of 10.4.7. We're iChat veterans, and all of a sudden we're feeling like neophytes.
Oddly, my son can connect the 3 of us together no problem. What is it that makes some connections impossible? Have any of the major backbones changed rules anywhere? Is AOL messing with anything? Why is Apple not acknowledging any of this?
Whatever the gremlin is I know it has nothing to do with my computer or network up to my IP (Time Warner). Might they be a common denominator?

  • Last question for the day - Music Video

    Hi,
I have been asked by a friend to do their music video for them. I understand while shooting they will be playing to the original recording but after a day of shooting and im back at my computer what is the best way to syc my clips to the master audio track? Is there a tutorial available on music video creating? I know I could sit there and bit by bit move the clip to match however I am hoping there is a tutorial on it some place on the net.
    Thanks

    Hi
    Me just thinking
    I would
    • Make several full song recordings with my Camera (close-ups, full size etc.)
or use several Cameras (5 to 10 recordings)
Put the best Audio-uptake as a master Audio then add video clips to do the visual
part as rythmic and paced fast/slow enough to reflect the "Air" of the lyrics.
Know what I'm taking about - NO Not at all - just speculating.
(With several Cameras - all recording non-stop - this would be much easier in
FinalCut Pro and the MultiCamera function.)

  • Advice for Making Screen Recorded Videos for FCP

I want to use some screen recording software to record some tutorials on using various features of a website. The video will later be imported into FCP where I will edit it, add transitions, titles and voice overs. The final videos will be uploaded to YouTube.
    1. Can anyone recommend a size that I should use when recording my screen? Should I start as high as possible and later downconvert?
    2. What is a good size to upload to YouTube these days for something like this where I want to make sure the user will be able to see the details of a link, button, etc.?
    Thanks!

This is an excellent app that will allow you to edit, add bells and whistles, and compress and post all within the application:

  • Recorded video chats always open iTunes at conclusion

not only this, but the video file is copied and saved into a "Movie" folder in my iTunes folder. I have check all the prefs in ichat and iTunes and cannot figure out how to stop this. I record ichats several times a week so this is very annoying.
    Any help appreciated.

    Hi,
Annoying as this is I am not sure there is another way to do this in Snow Leopard.
Previously the Ecamm boys did Conference Recorder but it no longer works in Snow Leopard.

I cannot remember my Leopard version of iChat (ichat 4.x) opening iTunes on completion but it is a very long while since I did it.

  • Question for the experts on Video problem

We are away on holidays but didn't want to miss this opportunity to ask for help from the experts. I'm not sure if I have a problem with my motherboard or video card or both. I posted the problem previously but here it is again.
I have an HPE-250f HP desktop computer which has worked well although has not had a lot of use. Shortly after purchasing it I got a real deal on a 17" i7 laptop which has been used much more than the desktop. Yesterday numerous Windows updates were installed and a couple of reboots to complete the installations. On occasion in the past Windows updates have caused issues but am sure they are not the cause of the current problem.
Upon turning on the computer yesterday it sounded like an airplane taking off so pulled the side cover off and it was the fan on the video adaptor that was making all of the noise. I have never heard it anywhere near that loud in the past even when under very heavy usage. In addition there was no video signal so my first thought was the adaptor had died. I took the adaptor out and reinstalled it to make sure it was seated properly however no change. I took the adaptor out again and then uncapped the VGA and DVI connectors that are on the rear of the computer but I did not get a video signal from either of those two outlets either. I don't know whether those ports are enabled on the motherboard or in the BIOS as this computer came with an upgraded video card. Either way there was no video. I have another low end video card here that I don't think was ever used so installed it and again no video. The hard drive seems to be making the normal sounds you would hear when it is booting but again with no video can't really say what is going on.
I am sort of out of ideas as to what to try next as without video you can't see if there are any error messages coming up, whether it is trying to boot or is actually loading Windows.
I don't want to scrap the computer and I guess an option would be to try and find the same motherboard and replace it but I am hoping someone may have some suggestions as to whether there should be video from the built in ports that come capped from the factory. It just seems odd that there is no video from the original card, the built in ports, or a different video card. It is also odd the original video card fan funs flat out when you turn the computer on before it even starts to get warm. If there is a problem with the slot the card goes in one would think the built in ports would still have video but that is assuming they are actually enabled but again don't know if they would be.
If anyone has any suggestions or if anyone knows a reliable place to buy the same motherboard that is in this computer I would appreciate that information.
    Thank you

Finally back from vacation and took a bit of time to get caught up from vacation. It appears somehow two threads got started so will continue on with this one as there is more activity here. There is no video from the original video card reinstalled in the computer. There is also no video on either of the integrated ports after removing the caps and removing the battery, and tried two different monitors just to be sure. I have a friend with the same computer and he said there is no setting in the CMOS/BIOS to enable the onboard video so don't know if it has been permanently disabled or not but again no video from either of the integrated ports. Also If there is a speaker on this computer they have done a very good job of hiding it and i have never heard it beep in all the time i have owned it. I know at this link under INTERNAL CONNECTORS it mentions a speaker connection. I would install a speaker for the purpose of troubleshooting but I cannot find a reference anywhere that says which pins are for a speaker so if anyone would know where to find this information I would gladly install a speaker so we could troubleshoot further. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-Elite-HPE-Desktop-PC-series/4162190/model/4262654/document/c02014355 It is certainly a possibility that one of the updates caused an issue but it would be surprising as these were updates to Windows and not the BIOS, so one would think if the update was causing an issue it would be after the POST and when it was about to start loading Windows. I will try the suggestions listed above to the extent I can without a speaker connected but it would be great if someone can post a manual for the motherboard that mentions which pins or header has the speaker connections so I can install a speaker. I just heard back from my friend that has the exact same conputer and his has no audible beep when it starts either and am sure there is simply no internal speaker on this computer. Thank you

  • For some reason my video just says, "waiting for a response from _____"?

For some reason the video chat doesnt even read that the other person has accepted the chat? I know the person who I am trying to video chat has no problem connecting with other people. Help please?

    HI,
iChat 2 through to iChat 6 then Messages beta in Lion and Messages full app in Mountain Lion can do Video chats.
I have an older G4/1ghz Dual Processor computer booted in to OS X 10.4.11 and iChat 3.1.9
I have issues with Messages trying to Invite the iChat 3.x.x machine.
It's video chat window does the same as yours, stating  it is " Waiting for a response from xxxx"
However no Visible invite ever appears on the iChat 3. computer.
On the other hand I can invite from iChat 3 to Messages and make a connection.
I am not having a issue from Snow Leopard (iChat 5) to Messages in Mountain Lion.
I had based my first reply on the Question
For some reason the video chat doesn't even read that the other person has accepted the chat?
(i.e. nothing about the computers involved).
From the newest MacBook Pro (not retina) to the new MacBook Pro (not retina).
This bit in your latest reply does really tell me where you bought them and what was installed when you got them and what is Installed now.
Some people have described problems on Lion machines after installing the latest Apple Remote Desktop Client
(Everyone has Apple Remote Desktop Client on their System and it is used with iChat in iChat Screen Sharing - it provides the Engine as it were.  It also does the Screen Sharing within the Finder as well as providing one end of the Apple Remote Desktop help)
As a starting point I would go to the app's menu > Preferences > Video Section ans set the Bandwidth Limit on both machines to 500kbps
This can help if there are vast differences in Internet speeds at either end.
