Question for *SIM FREE* N95 owners.

Hi.
If you have bought a generic SIM free version of the N95 with no network branding please post the colour of your handset and your product code (underneath IMEI on label underneath battery, also listed on the label on your nokia box)
I am trying to compile a list of the different product codes.
cheers

Sent the Orange back as it did not do VOIP which they assured me it would DOH
Now got a Sim Free unbranded not locked Light Graphite N95
(silver to me and you) Still on Orange with same contract just sim free so it can do VOIP
What is the product Code 0548364 its not the generic Euro 1 and the software update was very late compared to some sim frees
The box was unbranded as is the phone with no branded software i can see just one small code on the box starting cpw I guess is Carphone warehouse UK SO I would guess it could be the UK sim free rather than the European sim free?
What is the O2 software so if I can see if its part of that
But after the update to 6.11 there is still no branding
I chose it for the colour dont like the plum or sand
any ideas product Code 0548364 and why the update is so far behind the others?
Nokia user / modder since Nokia Orange and Mobira user too before that

  • Why bother with payin for sim free?

why bother with payin for sim free when you still have to wait for updates for months?
I bought my 5800 sim free on order to get updates faster and it seems  to always be the last to get firmware update releases
not that i can update anyway as Nokia in all it's wisdom has failed to add support for windows 7
for its software update program only the fastest selling OS in history means that most users are using it
I want V40 now not in 12 months gawd

totally agree Jimmy shame branded phones often see and update before me with my unbranded simfree phone despite me paying extra and buying outright
Phones supplied by network operators are network-branded. This means that they alter the features of the phone to suit their marketing needs and basically turn it into a semi-functional device used to advertise to you. Features that they don't want you using are removed, their logo is plastered all over the place and links to their services are stuffed into the menus.
In some cases, they add a few features that are required to take full advantage of their subscriber services.
Given that the firmware in these phones is something based on Nokia's original firmware but subsequently modified by the network operator, any updates that the operator is planning on releasing will become available to your branded phone after they've been made available to generic, SIM-free phones. You will have to wait for your network operator to modify the firmware and release it, and this can often take a very long time, if indeed the operator bothers doing it at all. You may well be left with buggy firmware while users of SIM-free phones have already updated theirs and thus eliminated the bugs. Not to mention bugs introduced by the networks themselves during the branding process.

  • Nokia UK too slow to release firmwares for sim fre...

Why are Nokia UK being so slow in releasing a firmware for the UK sim free variant? I specifically bought an unbranded phone so I did not have to wait for a network branded update that may or may not happen. I read there is some customisation needed for the UK variant. What specifically is different? I mean the UK is one of the biggest markets for mobile phones, should we not be high on your priority list?
Considering this is your flagship phone, I am pretty disappointed with support thus far. Also in case anyone is wondering I know this is a user to user forum, but I also know Nokia employees do post from time to time!

    Hi Recall,
I don't work for Nokia so I can't comment on exactly whythey delay the release of firmware into the UK market but I do work in thehandset test industry and can explain the possible reason(s).  I'mactually writing this from my hotel in Brasilia where I'm testing a device notas 'complicated' as the N97 and this is still taking 2 weeks.
I would like to point out that even the smallest changein software can have a big impact on the rest of the code so thorough testingis required.  We call this regression testing in the industry and with theN97 device being so feature and technology rich it can take time to testproperly.  Everything, and I mean everything has to be tested.  Togive you an idea you are looking at GSM, GPRS, EDGE, R99 and R5 testingincluding calls, SMS, MMS, EMS, Email, Contacts, Bluetooth.  incoming calls, outgoing calls, international calls, call forwarding, call barring then all theusability and product testing such as the GUI features and add-ons specific tothe N97.  Now I have some reservations with Nokia on the N97 as some ofthe failures we see on the device you would have thought would have been caughtduring this type of testing previously.  When you get customized versionsof code too, say Vodafone and the likes' all this needs done with that too.
As you say the UK is a big market for Nokia but that alsomeans they need to be extra vigilant on the quality of their software as anymajor failure could have a huge cost impact for device recall/service etc forNokia.  However this is something you would have thought Nokia would haveplanned for during the release schedule of all their devices.
The other point is they may have found a bug in the codewhich only is apparent in the UK (or on UK networks) which would mean thesoftware they released they done so as an interim solution to other countriesto address the list of issues and upgrades while working on a newer version tobe released which includes a fix for the UK failure. This is just hypotheticalbut I've seen it happen before.
Sorry I've not answered you question with a direct answerbut it may help you, and others understand why we sometimes see such delays inthe release(s).

  • Email Settings - For SIM Free Curve 8900

    Hi There,
I really hope someone out there can help me with my concerns.
I was bought a New Curve 8900 from Amazon as a SIM Free Device.
I used my existing BT Sim Card. Went through the initial set up all seemed fine. But upon looking more deeply I cannot receive or access any Email via my Curve.
I have no ability to add an additional email setting on my device. All I have to choose from is Blackberry Enterprise Server. I have looked at other postings. I know other people have had problems but not to my knowledge in the UK specifically with BT as their service provider. Upon various calls and emails they cannot help as they only support their own BT To Go Phone.
Can any one help me. I am really struggling to get anywhere with my issue.
    Cheers.

    1. You need to have BT set you up with a BLACKBERRY PLAN
    2. Then you can go to the BT BIS site and add your email address

  • Questions for ipod nano 5g owners

+Please can anybody convince me to get a 5g 16 gigs nano? I'm a bit scared to go for this new buy and sell my old 3g nano.+
Would really appreciate if u guys can give me a feedback on these few questions. I don't intend to use the camera much at all and I don't want to play videos on it...still im a bit concerned about the battery.
    1) How is the battery quality? Experiencing any troubles?
I do own a 3g ipod nano and the battery rocks, I can listen to some music for about 2 hours per day and go like that for a week or so. 4g ipod nano was a real lemon if compared to the 3g...wondering if the 5g is as good as the 3g or not.
    2) What about the flashy colours that have been used? Are they looking good? I honeslty really liked the satinated aluminium and the soft colouring of the 4g better.
    3) The clicking wheel is that rather thick? I do remember that the 4g nano had an incredible light clicking wheel when i was touching it it felt like it could broke if really pressed hard. 3g has not that issue, it feels very sturdy and compact.
    4) I also noticed that in many pic sonline there is a sort of a gap between the clicking wheel of the 5g and the cover of the ipod itself. Is that something that all the owners of the 5g have or there are only some bad manifactured ones out there?

    1. I haven't been able to test the battery power extensively due to the fact that I've been playing around with transferring videos from my iPod to my PC, and I just installed a hookup in my car so I could listen to it in there, and this hookup also charges the battery... BUT I did play Sudoku on it the other day while I was waiting for a pizza to cook. The timer had me clocked at 14 minutes after it was all said and done (I thought I was pausing it but it kept counting the time, and the screen never went idle). After I finished, I looked at the battery power and it had barely gone down at all, maybe a slight smidgen at most. With my 4th Gen, I could play a game of Sudoku for about 8-9 minutes and that could drain a full battery anywhere from a quarter to halfway down, so in comparison, 5th gen battery life is MUCH better then 4th gen, though I suspect I may have had a faulty battery in the old one...
    2. Personally, I love the new colors and casing on the new nano's. Very shiny.
    3. I played around with my 3rd, 4th and 5th gen to see what you ment about the click wheel. The 3rd gen is thicker, but with the 4th and 5th gen, you are dealing with a slimmer nano, so Apple most likely slimmed down the click wheel to compensate for room. My 4th gen held up well, I don't see why the 5th gen would be much different.
    4. I think any gaps you may have seen from pics might have been a trick of light and shadow. All Nanos have extremely tiny spaces between the click wheel and the casing if you look close enough. For the 5th gen, I think it might be the aluminum finish, and that the click wheel is raised ever so slightly on each side, that makes the gap on that nano seem larger then it really is.
I hope this helps, but of course, this is only my version, I'm sure others will put there two cents in too.

  • Nokia's HUGE expensive (for us n95 owners) mistake...

Nokia's HUGE expensive (for us n95 owners) mistake!
    First of all...
Take a look on this Symbian/Smartphone overview :
    Nokia 6600 (Year 2002/2003)
Free RAM to use : 9MB
    Camera (Video) : 176*144pixels
    Use of free RAM : 1-2MB (11-22%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 7-8MB (78-89%)!!!
    Nokia N70 (Year 2005?)
Free RAM to use : 32MB
    Camera (Video) : 352x288pixels
    Use of free RAM : 3-4MB (9-13%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 28-29MB (87-91%)!!!
    Nokia n73 (Year 2006?)
Free RAM to use : 20MB
    Camera (Video) : 352x288pixels
    Use of free RAM : 4-5MB (20-25%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 15-16MB (75-80%)!!!
    Nokia n95 (Year 2007)
Free RAM to use : 20MB
    Camera (Video) : 640x480pixels
    Use of free RAM : 14-15MB (70-75%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 5-6MB (25-30%)???
    Nokia N95-US (Year 2007)
Free RAM to use : 84MB
    Camera (Video) : 640*480pixels
    Use of free RAM : 14-15MB (16-18%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 69-70MB (82-84%)!!!
    Nokia N95-8GB (Year 2007)
Free RAM to use : 84MB
    Camera (Video) : 640*480pixels
    Use of free RAM : 14-15MB (16-18%)
    Free memory to use
(on the same time when using camera) = 69-70MB (82-84%)!!!
The phone's are using 0.5-3mb of the free ram too
normal phone functions. This is added to the camera memory
because it will close down running programs if there are
not enough memory to camera + "normal function".
(If some thing is not correct... then tell me!).
    Conclusion :
Almost all symbian phones in this overview have
more than 75% of free RAM to programs and "system"
programs, when you are recording a movie, or watching a
    recorded movie in gallery.
BUT!: N95 has only 5-6mb (25-30%) of free RAM to this job! :/
    What do this mean?
Well for many people they get an ERROR MEMORY message some times.
And for some "heavy" symbian programs users
    (that also use "system" programs),
    they get this messages ALOT!
I got it 9 out of 10 when I will record a movie or watch one.
And I have ONLY 3-4MB of Symbian "system" programs running!
    Well some question's :
    01) Is it Nokia's first Symbian smartphone?
    02) Could we know/read that the camera will use about
15mb out of 20mb, before we buy the n95?
    03) Does Symbian means that u can improve/expand
the functions in the mobile, with new symbian's programs?
    04) Are the Symbian system and programs (in 2007)
more RAM hungry then in 2003 (Nokia 6600)?
    05) Is it fair to use "system" Symbian programs (3. parts) in n95?
    06) Is it fair to multitaske in n95?
    07) Would it be fair to use the video camera AND
listen to musik on the same time ...in a device like n95?
    08) And how many MB (max),
in a device like n95 and in the year 2007,
is fair to use to Symbian system programs?
    09) Does programs and Nokia system funktions (and menu's)
give all memory back when they have been used?
    10) If not, would it be fair, too Nokia,
if we say they should knew that?
    11) Has ANY mobile (Samsung, SE or Nokia) in the HISTORY
got an RAM improving in the next model version
    (like n93 and n93i)?
And it is more than 400% improved free RAM in this case!
    12) Well... is Nokia N95 so a FULL symbian smartphone?
    Or is is a "HALF"?
    13) And if it is a "half" ..what can WE do with this NOKIA mistake?
    14) And WHY should WE pay for this Nokia mistake?
    My personal opinion is :
That Nokia should give us some money back,
or some thing else, so we will not loose so much when we will try to sell the n95, so we can get a full symbian mobile anno 2007 ...like N95-8GB!
We should could count on that when we buy a
SYMBIAN Smartphone it has enough RAM to run some few programs in the backgound, when we use the built-in camera or galleri in the phone. Why else buy a Symbian phone?
    Let us debate!
(and if YOU think I have right ...then let Nokia know it!)
    (sorry for my bad english)
Btw: Take a look on this good smartphone show :
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS7GJDLUuXM
    (especially in the end)
    and...
I have just sold my n95! With a loss!
But I am still angry on Nokia! Thats why I post this.
And I hope Nokia do not make
this mistake again in the future.
And now I have to wait for the n95 8GB
    ...the real n95 symbian phone.
N95 is only a "half" Symbian phone. The n95 is now called: "N95 Beta" by heavy symbian users.
    http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=56819

    Pioneer?
Well n95 has almost the same camera like the n93 so you mean they are pioneer twise?
And when was it Nokia produced the first symbian smartphone?
And why did they put in less free memory in n95 than n70?
Take a look just on the camera differense. Why less memory?
They have experiense from the n93? the camera use alot of RAM when u record og would see a recorded movie.
14-15 mb out of 20 in a symbian smartphone.
I like n95 but i cant use it like a full symbian smartphone.
Not with this RAM and camera.
I hoped that a firmware will do the trick.
But now I have tryed 2 ...and it is a little worse now.
How will they fix this? They can't.
Therefore the 2 new upgrade model's got 128mb.
Btw: Do u mean 128mb of ram in n95? ...its only 64mb in the old n95.
N95 is only a "half" Symbian phone. The n95 is now called: "N95 Beta" by heavy symbian users.

Look at your receipt. Does it say unlocked? It is possible to purchase both locked "sim free" and unlocked iPhones from Apple.
ONLY the carrier an iPhone is locked to can legitimately unlock it.
IF your receipt says that it was supposed to be unlocked, and it is not, call AppleCare. They should be able to straighten it out.

    Hi,
Please help me with this as the phone is currently lying as a dead paperwieght with my brother in law. The phone, even though bought as SIM FREE, keeps asking for ACTIVATION!!!
Does it mean that I need to activate it with a SIM of one of the carriers that offers a contract and then I am free to use it with any SIM anywhere in the world?
Please assist in as much detail as you can.
    Thanks.

    Hi FelipeV,
Thanks, tried that.. half their numbers keep going busy and when they do pick up they are unable to assist.
I called up APPLE in UK as well, no help there either..

    Thanks for the suggestion anyways.

Can anyone recommend a best option for getting a 'carrier free' 3GS for use with the Orange network in the UK?

    Thanks for the comments above.
Why would a warranty not apply just because the phone ends up in a different country? If an Apple product is defective, then surely they have a legal responsibility to put the product right. It would be interesting to see how it stood up in a court of law. As consumers we all have rights regardless of what any manufacturer puts in their warranty information. In the UK the Sale of Goods Act means you are covered for up to six years if a product is defective because of an 'inherent fault' no matter what the manufacturer says.
Not true. I used to work for a company down in Berkshire. One of their products bought through official channels over here was covered.
Try buying one in the states because it was cheaper tho, and you'd suddenly find you had no warranty.
The Sale of goods Act is UK law not international law. It might apply to products bought somewhere in the EU but it wouldn't be worth the paper it was written on in the US.
