Question from Mac newbie about system and startup programs

I recently switched from an old Win 98 computer and LOVE this macbook! Could someone please explain a couple of things to me?
Two windows now suddenly appear when I restart my computer - one is a window with all the files and folders stuff from when I installed my Canon MP500 printer last week. Why is this box opening at startup, and can I get it to stop?
The other suddenly opening at restart is a simple Finder window showing my hard drive and network. (I am not connected to a network). What's the source of these things starting up? How can I fiddle with this setting? These things are not listed when I go to System Preferences-Accounts-Login items.
On Windows you can hit CtrlAltDelete and see all the running programs, even background programs. How do I do it on the Mac?
Thanks,
-Alden

Charles I'll start from your last question. You'll find "Activity Monitor" in the Utilities folder (inside Applications folder) that's the equivalent to the Task Manager in Windows. you can leave it in the dock to have it handy.
About the Canon printer window showing when you start; see if it has an open icon on the dock when it's open. Click and maintain clicked on that icon (if there is one) and uncheck "Open at Login".
Finder Window usually opens at login if it was open when you logged out
Oh, and Welcome to the forums!

  • Simple opinion question from a newbie about IDE's

    I have been looking around for the best architecture for a n-tier client server app. I have been using the jsp/servlet architecture for a while, and have recently found out about web-start . There seems to me to be a great advantage to be able to maintain state on the client, as opposed to having multiple roundtrips to the server.
    My questions are:
    1) What is the easiest (i.e., any open source tools/ide's?) way to build a full featured gui for a desktop application that will connect to servlets or web services and can be deployed via web-start? I would prefer a gui builder with many available widgets - are there any out there?
    2) what is the difference between JNLP and web-start?
    3) How do you bind gui controls (swing/swt/whatever) to the data? I.E., I used to work in Borland c++ builder and there were data-aware controls. Does java have any similar controls that can be bound to a datasources?

    1. I'm sure there are a few out there, but the ones I've tried created crap code, so I usually roll my own.
    2. Java WebStart is the name of the JNLP implementation that comes with Sun's JRE (but the two are often used as synonyms). There are other JNLP projects, but most of them seem to be dead.
    3. I'll leave this to someone else.

  • Questions from a Rookie about JSP and JEE

    Hello friends. I've just started to learn JEE and JSP technologies. I have some experience with .Net and PHP; but just found time to learn JSP. I have developed a simple Web application by using those technologies. And I want to deploy those codes to the web. I have googled. But could not find an explanatory tutorial about this topic.
    My second Question is:
    I am using Netbeans 6 Beta 2 and I am connecting to a Database by using a function let's say something called connectDb() with SSH;. How can I bind a Data table with this function. (Netbeans have a buildin component for binding to a component to db but does not support SSH)
    Thanx in advance. I would appreciate any kind of help.

    Hello.
    Is there anybody in there?
    Just reply if you can help me.
    Is there anyone here?

  • Network question from mac newbie

    I have managed to get my wireles network up and running with internet connection and even sharing with my PC.
    Connecting with that pc is o.k. through finder, but is it possible to have a simple short cut on the desktop to access the sharing PC quickly? This appears each session but disapears when I shut down,i.e will the mac make the connection automatically on start up so I can just click on that icon to connect straight away?
    Hope that makes sense!

    If it works the same way it did in OS 9... select the icon of the mounted server on your desktop, and go to File -> "Make Alias" (command-L by default).
    You can also use the Connect To dialogue box (command-K) and then add the server to your favourites using the little + sign next to the URI.

  • Question from a Newbie wireless user

    Please excuse the naivete of this question. I'm completely ignorant on everything pertaining to wireless internet. My old Powerbook 400mHz G4 Titanium has never had wireless of any kind until this week when I bought a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Never used wireless, don't know anything about it.
    I started following the instructions on the PCM adapter this morning to get it all set up. I plan to toggle back and forth between wired internet at home and the wireless adapter when I'm out on the road.
    I was surprised when I saw the window where I enter my settings that there were no less than ten different internet services flying around the room in my house! I guess I have a lot of wireless neighbors and I could easily access their bandwidth.
    I imagine the same would go when I'm in town sitting in the library. They welcome you to use their internet access, but it's in a busy end of town and I'm sure I'll see numerous services available there too.
    So I'm clueless on this topic. Again, I've never used wireless internet before - but I've read about these guys who've been arrested in front of coffee houses for stealing bandwidth at WiFi hotspots when they weren't paying customers.
    What's the deal with sitting in your living room and using your neighbor's internet access? I know it's not ethical and we should all get our own, but what are legalities? And say I hopped on to someone's internet access +quite accidentally+...how does one get caught if you do it quietly? And have people actually gotten into trouble beyond these two guys that made national news?
    I guess my main question is exactly how careful do I need to be to set the correct access service when there are ten immediately available in a public place? Can I just click on whatever signal is strongest and log on without fear of being caught?
    I hope somebody knowledgeable can set me straight on this.
    Thanks.
    -JOHN

  • I Have a question from a Customer about ONLINE OPTION

    Hi all,
    I have the below question from one of my customers, and non being a DB expert I am not able to answer or even where to find a documentation supporting the answer.
    "We need to know how the "Online Option" to reorg indexes or tables is safe to be used, this way:
    - Alter table ... Move .. online;
    - Alter table ... Rebuild .. online;
    to understand if the technique can be used to maintain the DB without stopping service to end users.
    The DB is in 11gR2. I do not want notes or PDF's but just answers on:
    - It's Safe ? yes/No or Yes with some tricks, Best practices (which?)
    - Any known issues or bugs or patches to be applied (or Service Packs)"
    I was planning to setup a Bug Review with my ACS Service Engineers but they would like a quick preliminary answer to the fist question before starting the full Bug Review.
    In my understanding, the Online option is to reorg indexes and not tables... am I right?
    Which can be a documentation page or community discussion or any additional link you can share ?
    Or may be you just have a full answer :)
    Thank you
    Kind regards
    Chiara

    Rebuilding an index online will lock the base table at the start and end of the rebuild, this can cause issues if there are active transactions see http://richardfoote.wordpress.com/2008/02/11/index-create-and-rebuild-locking-improvements-in-11g-ch-ch-ch-changes/
    alter table move online will make any associated indexes unusable and these will need to be rebuilt after the table is moved.
    Two other options:-
    for indexes a coalesce is generally faster and requires less space.
    For everything dbms_redefinition has more options and is less intrusive at the expense of being more complex.
    Also probably the biggest risk is you move tables rebuild indexes charge your customer for all this work and it fails to improve anything (or actually makes things worse)

  • More from Adam Taylor about Zynq and SDSoC: "Zynq is a device every embedded system designer should be familiar with"

    Adam Taylor publishes the MicroZed Chronicles weekly in the Xcell Daily blog so you are likely familiar with his writing. Adam has just published an article about SDSoC and Zynq titled “High-level synthesis comes of age with SDSoC” on the Embedded.com Web site. Here’s his motivation for writing this article:
    “…Zynq is a device every embedded system designer should be familiar with and considering for their application. At its heart the Zynq is not a FPGA with embedded processors -- like previous generations of FPGA with Power PCs -- but a true embedded processor with very flexible interfacing capabilities (DDR, CAN, UART, USB, Giga Bit Ethernet, SPI and I2C to name a few). What separates the Zynq from other embedded processors is the attached programmable logic, and with SDSoC embedded system developers can exploit this pretty simply…
    SDSoC takes the eclipse front end, Vivado HLS, Vivado and a lot of behind the scenes intelligence to create seamlessly the option to accelerate software functions in the attached programmable logic of the device.”
    What follows is a simple explanation of what SDSoC brings to the party from a design engineer’s perspective.

    For all the three combos, I have "driver default" selected. The other option is "default"; I tried to manually type "Master" into the mixer channel field, but then gmplayer's windows and my Xfce taskbar started blinking, so I knew I had just "crossed streams".
    Regarding NVIDIA X Server Settings, running "usr/bin/nvidia-settings --load-config-only" at login is the only way to apply the settings "automatically".
    I've slapped that on my ~/.xinitrc before "exec startxfce4". Thanks in advance, going to test it now!
    About the refresh and non-decorated windows issues (which *appears* to be solved after I've wiped the xfce-session cache), I've been thinking: could they somehow be related the login manager I've chosen, SLIM?

  • A few questions from a newbie!

    Hello!
    So, I am VERY new to using Mac productions and I just got my Macbook recently.
    I have a few questions that may seem to have a very simple and obvious answer but like I said, this is all new to me...
    1. Do I have to install a anti-virus/spam program? If so, which one?
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
    Anything else that I should defiantly know please let me know!
    Thanks so much!
    Alanna.

    Not unless you want to. I have had Macs for 2 years and never had a problem. This is a good one if you decide to install one. ClamXav
    2. Time Machine- this is the program to back up files right? when I try to set it up it doesn't give me any options for a back up disk.
    You need an external hard drive attached to use with Time Machine. This explains it.

    This is info that will help you get the best life from your battery.
    It is OK to leave your battery hooked to the charger most of the time. The only time I unhook mine from the charger is when I calibrate or for a few minutes to use in another room. Have you calibrated your battery yet? You should calibrate every two months or so to keep the battery fully functioning. If you use your MacBook infrequently, it’s best to re-calibrate the battery at least once a month.
    It is best not to use your battery unless you need to. Some people have hurt their batteries by charging then discharging every time they use the MacBook. This will age a battery very fast and cause you to buy a battery sooner than you should have too. Don't discharge the battery just because you used it. Li-Ion batteries prefer small charges over big ones. Use it and then plug it in as soon as you can. The only time my Battery is ever fully discharged is when I'm doing a calibration.

  • IWeb questions from a newbie

    Hi everyone...
    I am looking into making my own simple website and am trying to decide whether to make one from scratch or use iWeb and a .mac account. Any advice for the following questions would be appreciated!
    1. I see a lot of iWeb sites that have the ugly "web.mac.com" preceeding the site name. Other iWeb sites don't have this prefix so obviously there is a way to do without it. How do you eliminate that prefix?
    2. My site would only hold a resume and half a dozen short vid clips. But I've noticed on other iWeb sites that the video loads EXTREMELY slow (on a high speed cable line!). Is this a flaw with iWeb (is there a recommended compression rate for vids to play on iWeb)?
    3. When I bought my G5 it came with Garage Band, iMovie, iPhoto, etc. (everything EXCEPT iWeb). I noticed that in order to purchase iWeb, you have to buy all these apps again which seems like a waste! Is there a way to buy or download JUST iWeb?
    4. I've done lots of research on iWeb and on Amazon.com virtually everyone prefers iWeb '06 over iWeb '08. Isn't the newer version supposed to be an improvement? Does anyone know what the fuss is about...and is it a better idea to purchase the older version ('06)?
    Thanks for any help you might have!

    1. It's called personal domain. You have to buy a domain at a domain regitsrar like GoDaddy. Example: yourdomain.com
    Or Publish to a folder and upload to a server other than .mac
    2. It's not an iWeb issue. It's a hosting issue, thus an issue about .Mac. Publishing to a hosting other than .Mac speeds up things.
    3. iWeb first appeared with iWeb '06 in iLife '06 package. You maybe have iLife '05 or deleted it by accident (or not by accident)
    And no it isn't a waste as the applications are new versions, thus improved. New features included and so on. And no there's no way to legally download/buy only iWeb.
    4. I like iWeb '08 a lot more than iWeb '06.
    There are compatibility issues with the worst browser of the world, also commonly called InternetExplorer. But it's not an iWeb issue... It's an IE issue.
    Regards,
    Cédric

  • Four questions from a newbie!

    Hey, I have a few questions to ask actually about my macbook pro...
    When I bought my MBP, I ordered one with 120 GB, but when I got it and checked the hard drive, it said it has 111.5 in total. Am I missing something or did they just happen to forget to put 9.5 GB in my hard drive? I don't know if this is a normal issue or otherwise. There also seems to be a flux in hard drive space even though I haven't installed anything (even automatic updates).
    Also, I'm moving away for college so I'll be an ocean away from my house. In case I wanted to repair my MBP, should I bring the box it was delivered in? I really don't know the process, but that box is quite unwieldy, and space is an issue on the plane...so I need to know if its necessary to take that box with me for a repair service.
    I also have this buzzing noise emitting from the left speaker whenever I plug in the power adapter. I know this is a prevalent problem (from what I've read) in older MBPs, and since I just got mines this week, I don't know if it's normal or what. Also is heating an issue? Whenever I leave the laptop on my lap, the area in which the battery is placed (as well as the entire back and speaker area) heats up. I don't know if it's a common thing or not...
    I know I asked a lot of questions but thanks in advance!

    I'll try to answer as best as I can....
    1. This is normal, the "missing" space is taken up by the operating system and various system components... even when you format the drive, there will be some missing, it is completely normal.
    2. You do not need to bring the box, apple will send you a shipping box if you need to send it in, or you can bring it to the apple store closest to you. Do however, bring your system disks that came with the computer, as those are always good to have.
    3. This may be the whine that is common, there are a couple variants of the whine, read through here and see which one is yours and then the repair option would vary from that. You could always return your MBP for a new one though since you are within the 14 days... The MBPs do run how, you might want to invest in one of the products such as iLap that help with that, however, if you can handle it, then it should be fine. This is common with these units.
    4. AppleCare is auto enrolled, they used to send you a little license agreement and CD with techtools on it, but I don't think they do that anymore since the box that you buy in the store has a non-intel CD inside.. you are enrolled if it says you are enrolled, and thats all that really matters, after all, you can always call apple for questions.. If you do exchange your MBP though, be sure to have them transfer the apple care to the new serial number as well...
    Hope this helps!

  • A Trio of Questions From a Newbie

    OK, here goes. Brand new iMac as of 2 days ago (and me a Mac newbie).
    1) when I change the brightness in the display panel of system preferences, it always gets reset back to full brightness on reboot. How can I keep it at my chosen setting?
    2) when I setup a bootcamp partition and booted off my legitimate WinXP Pro CD, I was rewarded with a black screen and flashing cursor in the top right - nothing else.
    3) when I try to import my itune library off my pc (the files have been copied to the mac's hard drive), the mac just crashes after a while. no keys respond, not even cmd-alt-esc.
    Any thoughts or suggestions most welcome.
    Thanks.

    1. Don't know why this would happen, it shouldn't. Could be a bad preference file but I am not sure where that information is stored. You could try resetting the PRAM by restarting while holding down the command-option-P and R keys until you hear three chimes then let go of the keys and let the system finish booting up. This will also affect a few other settings so you may have to adjust a few things here and there.
    2. Try reinstalling Windows or contact Microsoft since it is their OS that won't work. If it is a legitimate copy then they should be able to support it. I would try a reinstall first if it were me.
    3. Could be a damaged sound file, try importing them in smaller batches rather than all at once and see if you can track down where the stall occurs.

  • Hi i wrote a question a weeks ago about servlets and JSP

    I thank to jimbal2 for help me on the topic "how to comunicate from servlet to a JSP and viceversa?", the solution was:
    You have a mechanism called "forwarding", with which you can pass control from one resource (servlet/jsp) to another resource (servlet/jsp). You do this using a RequestDispatcher, which you can get from the HttpServletRequest object. If for example you want to forward to "index.jsp" which is in the root of your web application, you would do this in your servlet:
    RequestDispatcher rd = request.getRequestDispatcher("/index.jsp");
    rd.forward(request, response);
    return;
    (watch the return statement, you must manually return after a forward, or else the servlet will continue executing!). A forward will NOT create a new request, the same request is passed to the new resource (to create a new request, use a redirect in stead, also done with the RequestDispatcher).
    To pass objects between the two resources when doing a forward, use request.setAttribute(), request.getAttribute() and jsp:useBean.
    but i have some other questions, and these are :
    so i've to do this with sessions and everything i want to pass to: for example my application is a servlet based, from a servlet to a JSP so i have to do it with:
    RequestDispatcher rd = request.getRequestDispatcher("/servletToJsp.jsp");
    rd.forward(request, response);
    return;
    if its from a JSP to a servlet it is the same way?, if i want to pass the session from one to another and viceversa how do i do that?,and its possible to import into a JSP a class that isn't a bean? because like i wrote here my appplication is a servlet-based but i want to insert new JSPs so thanks for your help and if its possible to respond my questions.

    but i have some other questions, and these are :
    so i've to do this with sessions and everything i want to pass to: for example

    RequestDispatcher rd = request.getRequestDispatcher("/servletToJsp.jsp");
    rd.forward(request, response);
    return;
    if its from a JSP to a servlet it is the same way?, JSP is actually generated as a HTML.
    You can simply use a HTML form to submit data to a Servlet
    if i want to pass the session from one to another and viceversa how do i do that?,http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/2.2/javadoc/javax/servlet/http/HttpSession.html
    session.setAttribute("id",123);
    session.getAttribute("id");
    Similar to request.setAttribute() but last for a session.
    and its possible to import into a JSP a class that isn't a bean? because like
    i wrote here my appplication is a servlet-based but i want to insert new JSPs http://java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/JSPIntro/contents.html#JSPIntro3
    You can import java.util.*, java.io.* , etc.

  • Miscellaneous - Questions from a Newbie

    I just got my iPhone this week and some questions popped up. I know that some of them might fit better in other categories than "basics"...
    1. Sync with Outlook - I was under the impression that the iPhone syncs up with Outlook but:
    a) How can you mark an Outlook Appointment as "privat" so not everyone in your company who has access to you calender can read it?
    b) Why are no documents synced, which are in a Calender Appointment save in Notes? (The Text in Notes will sync, but no PDFs for example...)
    c) When I reply to an E-Mail, the info that an when I replyed is not saved in Outlook
    d) in Outlook I can mark e-mails with priorities... this is not shown on the iPhone
    e) can the Auto-reply or Out-of-the-Office message set or changed from the iPhone?
    2. Mail
    a) I have differnt E-Mail accounts and would like to use different signitures for each account... the is an App, but thats too complicated. Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
    3. Media
    a) How can i created different Folders in the photoalbum, so I can sort them and don't have to scroll for ages...
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...), but which are allready installed when i bought it
    4. Sounds and Alerts
    a) Can i create my own ringtones (eg an mp3)?
    b) Can I add other alert sounds (for E-mails for example)
    c) How can I change sounds for different Events (New Mail, Alert...)?
    5. Connectivity
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
    c) If stolen, can I remotely delete it or search it via GPS?
    6. Battery
    a) is it normal that when you use push mail and make a couple of calls a day the battery only last for max. 20 hours?
    Thats the first lot of question from week one... Thanks in advance for replys and the awaiting answers
    Axl

    I can answer some of them:
    Is there a way to have an automated signature for each acount (this should be a basic feature!!!)
    No
    b) Can I save e-mail attachments in specific folders? (eg a word doc)
    No. You can't save attachments - just view them
    b) Can I get access to the Folders on the iPhone, so I can copy (for example Music) for differnt sources to the iPhone?
    No. The iPhone cannot be directly accessed like a hard disk. There are third-party apps that allow this to a certain degree, but you can't add Media to the iPhone via this method.
    c) Is there another Sync programm than iTunes?
    Not really. There's some that may do some features, but not a complete replacement for it. What's wrong with iTunes?
    d) Can I delete Apps which I don't use (eg. Weather, Stockmarket...),
    No. But you can move them to a different Home screen.

    Yes. Google "create iPhone ringtone" for a variety of options
    a) Can I sync the iPhone over bluetooth?
    No.
    b) Can I use the iPhone as a modem for my laptop? how?
    Yes, although it depends where you are. See:
