Question installing SATA drive on Delta 2 Platinum mobo

I just got a brand spankin' new Raptor 74gb SATA drive I will be installing on my brand new MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum mobo, and I have a few questions.
First off, I don't have any desire to run a RAID configuration but I want the SATA drive to be my boot drive.  So my question is, do I still have to enable RAID in the bios? Or is just Enabling SATA enough?
Second, when I go to install WinXP, do I have to hit F6 and install any drivers?
The mobo did come with a floppy that reads
G72-NVSA020
Nforce3 SATA Raid Driver (For WinXP only)
If I do need drivers, does that floppy have the drivers I will need when installing windows? Or is there a place to download the latest ones I will need?
I am slipstreaming XP SP2 into my XP installation.
Also, I've read that I'm not supposed to have any PATA drives hooked up when installing windows which makes sense.
oh yeah...one more thing...i'm going to be using an AMD xp 3200+ 400mhz bus processor and all I have is three sticks of Crucial PC2100 DDR memory that I wanted to use since I already own it.  Is this a bad idea?
thanks a bunch

Thanks for the quick response...I'll be building my system this weekend...I'm waiting for my PC Power & Cooling Silencer 470 ATX power supply that will arrive tomorrow.  This bad boy should give plenty of juice (26a on 12v) to power my rig.  It's good to know the pc2100 can be used to get the system up and running, but I'll be investing in some pc3200 shortly. I thought of a few more questions if you'd be kind enough to reply:
1) When I buy the PC3200, I plan on getting 2 sticks of 512 and running dual channel.  I see you run Crucial ram.  Are there any issues with Crucial ram running dual channel that you know of?
2) I have a SB live soundcard but plan on getting an Audigy 2 zs soon, should i just use the onboard sound for now?  Is the onboard sound as good as an SB live?
3) Do you recommend using the MSI "LiveUpdate" feature to update bios and drivers, or should I just go with the Nvidia UDP v5.10 and update bios manually? Or maybe I don't even want to update the bios?
Thanks again
-Mike

  • Novice - How To Install SATA Drive on K8N Neo2 Platinum

My current 2 SATA drives are almost at max capacity and hooked up to SATA 3 & 4 slots.  How do I go about installing a new SATA drive on slot 1 or 2?  I thought SATA was plug n play and all I had to do was enable SATA ports 1 to 4 in BIOS.  I've searched online and found articles pertaining to limitations on SATA slots 1&2, RAID configuration, VT8237 & Promise 20579 drivers --- and I am utterly confused
This is the hard drive that I've been eyeing.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16822148144  I only want to attach it to a bay in my PC and use it as storage, not install Windows.  Can someone provide clear cut directions for a novice like me on how to install it?

Enable the sata ports, which you intend to use with it.
Jumper drive to sata I mode.
    Connect new drive.
Boot into windows and go to disk management where you will see it listed.
You will need to partition and format it there.
Once completed it will show up in My Computer and be ready to use.

Yes, you can install a SATA drive in but you must do the following settings:
    ATA On Chip Config: Native
    ATA Mode: SATA Only
    PATA Keep Enabled: Yes
    PATA Channel Selection: No
    Set SATA as RAID: No
    The rest at defaults.
Next, you can't copy and paste windows from drive to drive as there'll be alot of i386 and winnt/system32 files being locked, thus unable to be copied over.
not looking to copy &paste but will use software that comes with sata drive or some other program to copy win xp to sata drive. will that work?

  • Error BSOD when installing SATA drive on 1 & 2 (RAID 0 on 3/4 AOK)

    Hi,
I have successfully installed Win XP Pro on 3 & 4, & wanted to install a Maxtor 120GB SATA drive on 1 or 2.  When I do this, & enable bios on 1 & 2, windows loads then prompts for a reboot due to the install of new hardware.  After posting & whilst Win is starting, it BSOD with IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS etc.  I shut down computer, remove SATA drive, alter settings back to before in Bios & select last successful settings & computer reboots AOK.  This happens on both SATA 1 & 2.
Is there a way of having the SATA storage disk on 1 or 2.  Is it best to hot install it with the O/S up, after having changed BIOS settings to enable SATA 1 & 2?

To answer my own question, while computer is turned off, (after taking anti-static precautions) plug power to sata drive.
Connect sata data cable to M/board, do not connect sata data cable to drive.
Enable sata 1 & 2 in bios, boot to windows.
    Drivers are installed for device.
Then carefully plug sata data cable into sata drive.
    Windows detects new hardware.
Enter Disk Management & partition/format to your hearts content.
Thanks to those who had a look at my post.  Hope this helps someone else.

  • How do I install SATA driver?

I've got a Raptor and I'm running it in a K8N Neo Platinum. I've also got a Sony DVD recorder.
Which SATA do I hook the drive to and which IDE do I hook the recorder to?
Also, how do I install the SATA driver? I don't want to use RAID so do I still need to intall a SATA driver?
I ran into a problem when I was installing Windows XP and it said it couldn't load the device driver for my diskdrive and CD ROm Drive. I'm not sure why but I thought it might have something to do with SATA.
    Thank you,

Oh man it's been a long 24 hours!  The reason I'm just getting back is because I removed my IDE HDD from this PC and installed it in my new K8N Neo. Well, it wasn't the SATA HDD causing the problem. I then removed my PS from this computer and installed it in the new one. Well, it wasn't the PS. Then I swapped my new PC3500 Mushkin Enhanced Memory 1GB (2x512) for my 1GB of Corsair XMS PC3200 in my old PC. Well, XP installed without a problem. It was my DAMN RAM. I guess it's bad or the Neo just doesn't like it. Anyway, I finally got this computer (old) back up and running so I could post.
I put the Mushkin back in the Neo PC and tried to install XP again with just one stick at a time. It still wouldn't let me. I then lowered the speed of the memory down to 166Mhz from 200Mhz with one stick and XP loaded without a problem.
So what do you guys think? Is my memory bad or does this board just not like Mushkin PC3500?
Will I get hit will a restock fee from newegg when I return this memory and what memory should I get to replace it?

  • Largest SATA drive for K8N Neo4 Platinum

I have a system based on the K8N Neo4 Platinum board, I'm planning to up, the storage capacity of my rig and was wondering if I can install a 500 GB or larger SATA or SATA II drive on it?
to make long story short I would like to know whats the largest Hard Drive (either IDE or SATA) one can install on a system with this board without problems or compatibility issues.
I presently have a Maxtor Diamond Plus 80GB SATA drive,
    Any takers??? ???

I see no problems, just try it.
As for a Sata-II drive, don't take Maxtor, any other drive should be fine.
However, you maybe must jumper it to SATA-1, depends on the onboard controller.

  • Installing sata drives

    inel 2.8 prescott
while formatting my hard drive the instructions came up press F6 to install SCSI or raid drivers i put the floppy disc in (intel IAA RAID driver). the computer read the floppy, but when icame to check the device manager there were no SCSI or raid controllers. does this mean the sata drive has not installed?
    thanks geoff

Are you sure that your mobo is the 845 series and not the 865 or 875 series as ICH4 on 845 series doesn't have onboard SATA support? Or is that you are using a SATA add on card for the SATA HDDs?

  • Fresh Windows XP Install SATA Driver Error

I'm trying to install WinXP on a new SATA Maxtor 120GB drive, and get the following error after pressing F6 and specifying the additional device:
"File TXTSETUP.OEM caused an unexpected error (1024) in line 1742 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c."
The drive is on the ICH5 SATA controller in the first position.  It is recognized by the BIOS correctly, along with the combo drive on the P-ATA controller.
    Any suggestions???

I really don't know the ICH5 well enough to determine if there is an optimal reason why you select the PATA only or the SATA only to match the primary boot device. In the boot sequence you can boot in whatever order you want, and with the F11 key you can boot off whatever device you want. Whatever works is usually OK, but when things don't work, try the right way at least once

  • Problem installing SATA driver

Did a clean install of my system today and ran into many problems >.<
I used maxblast bootable CD to partition my 300gb maxtor drive.
Used the floppies to setup XP pro and pressed f6 at start.
Only have 1 drive Drive and it is plugged into the 1st SATA port, so I used the nvidia disk that came with my MB and chose the bottom option from the menu of 2 choices ( nvidia nforce storage controller )
Windows setup then recognised the correct partitions maxblast had created and allowed me to install XP onto my choosen one.
Once this was installed everything seemed to be working fine.
Installed SP2 and all windows updates.
Then I decided to try the nvidia unified driver from the nvidia website ( didn't install anything from the MSI supplied disk )
That seemed to totally kill my PC on reboot, it can up with some startup screen I had never seen before, all black with a small rectangle with a windows logo in it. It hung on this screen after a while.
Upon next reboot it would just bluescreen before getting fully into windows.
So I though ho-hum, time to try again.
Did everything the same, and at the point just after using nvidia disk during installation for the 2nd time & putting the XP CD in the drive ( the part where it says setup is copying files ) My PC would bluescreen really fast and reboot with a message ntldr is missing.
I tried this over and over always getting the same results, I also tried installing both the options from the floppy with the same result.
The only way I could set it up was without hitting F6 and letting windows get on with it. Trouble is, once it gets to the partition part it only see's my HD as 120gb or something similar, and doesnt see the partitions I created in maxblast.
Once in XP I'm able to reclaim the rest of the HD space though.
Then I just used all the drivers from the CD included with the MB, and all seems to work well apart from I was getting a message saying my USB stick drive could operate faster with USB 2 ports - Got the same message in all the ports, but it seemed to dissapear after I uninstalled a entry in device manager that was a yellow ? next to USB device.
Is there something I'm doing wrong in the setup using the floppy disk? - perhaps the floppy is dodgy?
It would be good to get it working like that, as I wouldn't have to wait ages while I format and partition the drive within XP, maxblast does it almost instantly.
Also would be really good to know what drivers to install after XP has just been installed and updated.
Should I use the CD that comes with MB, or try the nvidias again?
Latest version bios used (1.4) with the raid options disabled and no overclocking at all.

Still no luck being able to install those drivers during install.
I even tried the method in the sticky thread where I enabled RAID on the channel the drive was in and pressed F10 at boot > hit right arrow key etc.
System would bluescreen at the moment the welcome to setup section appears where you choose partition to install on etc.
In the end I disabled raid in bios again and didn't use the drivers floppy ( I'd also used the latest from that unified driver download as also mentioned in the sticky )
Using the slipstreamed sp2 installer windows actually recognised the full size of the drive now on the setup section ( the screen it would bluescreen at with the SATA drivers installed from floppy )
I got the nforce maxwell and realtek drivers installed from the CD that came with MB and all is fine, so I'll count my blessings and leave it as is....for now
I do wonder why it wont allow me those drivers though, I checked my HD with powermax uility and it seemed fine, but something must be dodgy somewhere. I just hope it doesn't rear it's ugly head while I'm in the middle of doing some work or anything.

  • Do you HAVE to hit F6 when installing SATA Drives?

  • PROBLEM RESOLVED: SATA RAID Vista x64 Driver Errors on P45 Platinum

I have installed 5 WD 640GB SATA drives on my P45 Platinum PC build. Using the Intel Matrix Storage BIOS program, I configured them as RAID 0 (480 GB) and RAID 5 (2 TB) volumes.
Now I am trying to install Vista (x64)--as expected, the Windows installer prompts me for a RAID driver floppy. I have downloaded the latest ICH10R drivers from the MSI Website and copied them to a USB key--the installer detects the drivers on the key but when I click Next, I get the following error message: "No new devices could be found. make sure the driver files are correct and loaded on the driver installation media."
Can anybody help--I'm fresh out of ideas?
The P45 Platinum board is a rev 1.1. I have not flashed the BIOS so I suspect that it is v1.0 but am not sure how to confirm this.

Quote from: Jack the Newbie on 30-October-08, 17:39:54
When one of the board's controllers is set to RAID mode, it does not even matter if there are actually hard drivers connected to it, or not.  Vista is not attempting to locate a RAID volume but simply needs proper drivers to be able to initialize the controller.
OK, makes sense. So when Vista was prompting me for drivers it was actually looking for the JMicron RAID drivers NOT the Intel RAID drivers. When I tried to install the Intel RAID drivers it--naturally--gave an error message.
It seems that it is no longer necessary to install Intel RAID drivers when you install Vista as these are already available to the OS (must be on the DVD).

  • Cannot use IDE drive with SATA drive

I just installed a 60GB Maxtor Serial ATA hard drive in VIA port 1. However, when I install my previous Maxtor 20GB EIDE hard drive in IDE1, bootup hangs at the "Serial Ch. 0/Ch. 1 device" detection screen.
Is there a trick to this??? I really need the data off my IDE drive. How do I get an IDE drive to exist along side a pre-installed SATA drive?
And does it matter if the IDE drive is set for Master or Slave?

The IDE drive should be set to "master" or "slave" depending on which connector of the cable you're using.  The IDE cable included with the board clearly labels which is which.
You didn't say but I'll assume you have a K8T Neo.
If you still cannot get it to work, you should try the Promise controller.

  • Installing a single sata drive on a K7N2 Delta M/B

    where do I start?
If I run the raid setup, it can see it fine in there right size and eveything, but can't see the drive (or any options for sata) in the bios, or anything relating to it in windows.
Currently running XP with two IDE drives (no raid)
Can I use the sata drive without using the raid?
Does the sata drive have to be the primary drive?
    Many thanks

not sure if this is what yur lookin for but when i first got my raptor, i already had like a 200 gb and a 120 gb ide HD on my k7n2 delta2 plat, so i was like ok reformat time! since i didnt have that much stuff. i just disconnected my 2 ide drives, stuck in my 74gb raptor, and installed windows on that. but you have to be sure all the other drives are discconected while yur doin this. if u have other drives connected, it might now work, i got a boot disk failure at first! i was like lol lets do it again! but yea after i installed windows on the raptor, i just reformatted the other 2 hd's as dump drives. i hope this helps...in some way at least

  • [nForce] Problems with K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum and SATA

    Hi All
I have a MSI K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum with an AMD 3200+ Barton.
    I have 2 x 512mb Crucial PC3200 DDR400 RAM.
I have a Samsung 80gb SATA hard drive.
I am trying to install Windows XP Pro onto a blank SATA drive. The trouble is that I get into the Win XP Pro setup and it just doesn't recognise the drive. I have tried installing the drivers on the Flopy, but the drive just isnt recognised for me to install Win XP to the SATA drive to use as a boot drive.
I've read the advice thread, but couldn't find my problem.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks

Thank for that. I haven't done that but I have got XP to recognise the drive to install to it.
XP went as far as going to the lovely bright XP installation screen and has installed hardware. When it got to installing the network it just froze up and stopped working.
Now I think the problem may be that I set the one SATA drive up to be RAID (striped) in the RAID config. I will disable this tonight and have another look. The thing that I would like to know is what setting in the BIOS of this mobo means that the SATA drive can be used as IDE? I don't have two SATA drives to use in RAID, so I figured that I have to get the one SATA to act as an IDE drive. I have SATA spreading disabled, but am unsure as to which of the other settings to change. Soz to keep asking!
EDIT: I sorted the RAID config thing. Fomatted the drive and re-installed XP. Once again, it just stops once it gets to the windowsesque creen. It stops at various points during the installation, sometimes at the "installing networks" bit, sometimes at the "completing installation" (after coying data). I just don't know what to do realy. Might RMA the board and go back to my trusted old Aopen AK77-600GN :-(
    Anyone any ideas?
