Question mark in right had corner of windows

I just had my first crash of a 1 year old macbook. after a hard reboot, i noticed that there is a question mark to the right of the search in the right hand corner of the HD window, or any other folder window. when i click on the question mark, i get a small window that says "cannot find item". very wierd. other than that computer seems to be working fine. anyone see this before?

It appears that random data may have been written to one of the plist files during the crash.

  • Question mark top right of all windows

There has suddenly appeared a large grey question mark at the top left of all windows, for example, the main HD window and all the folder windows.
The finder text font is also different to how it was before.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks everyone.

    Hi The Buckminster,
There has suddenly appeared a large grey question mark at the top left of all windows, for example, the main HD window and all the folder windows.
This is what's termed as an orphaned alias. At some point an alias was created by either yourself or someone else using your computer and the alias was placed on top of the Finder window. This can be achieved in a similar way to placing an application in the Dock. Simply click and drag the file/application to the top of the Finder window, wait a second or so and a plus symbol will appear. At this point an alias is created of the original file which can be opened by simply clicking on it; same as you would from the Dock.
The question mark is appearing because the link to the original file has been lost; either the original was deleted or has been moved to a different location. You can remove the question mark by simply Command(Apple)+clicking on the question mark and dragging it away from the Finder window. It will then disappear in a "poof".
The finder text font is also different to how it was before.
Do you have any third party utilities installed which allow you to change the original font used by Finder?

  • Question Mark Upper Left Hand Corner

What does a big question mark mean in the upper left hand corner of finder window? Appears on all my finder windows. I click on it and it says "The Item Can't Be Found." Very odd. I do use a lot of different external drives for backups, etc etc. Not sure it if is trying to reference one of those or what........??

I think MacJack is thinking it is in the Finder window. However, do you mean it is on the toolbar of a Finder window? If so, haku64 has the right method of removing it. But, if it is a tool you want to repair, right-click on the Toolbar and select Customize Toolbar… Either drag back the standard toolbar, or replace the malfunctioning item with a new one. You can then just drag the ? one out of the toolbar.

  • MacBook Pro won't boot (question mark folder) after blue screen on windows bootcamp

    Hi,
So, I was on windows, using bootcamp, and I was creating partitions on a pen drive with it, and then it asks me that it needs to restart to apply changes.
But then, while restarting, a blue screen occurred (**** windows).... And I forced the shutdown pressing the power key.
Then, I simply turned the MacBook on, trying to boot on my snow leopard and I got a flashing folder with a question mark on it.
Now I can't access any partitions on it, if I press option key on startup I get a blank window!
I tried to reset PRAM, repair the MacOs partition using the snow leopard DVD (it shows up fine, along with windows partition and EFI partition), and I still don't get my startup disk showing up...
How can I fix this? I can't loose my files and I need to work with it :/

    I just fixed it!
For future reference, what I did was:
    - Booting from OSX DVD, go to disk utility
    - Erase windows partition (yap, I lost it...)
    - Do a "repair disk" on every partition of my hard drive
    - Restart
    And it just worked ;)
Thankfully I had no important files on my windows partition, now I will just reinstall it.

  • Question mark help please (? in Finder window Toolbar)

    Hi there
Since my upgrade to Snow Leopard, I have the following question mark in open windows (see pic below):
Anyone know what it is, or how to make it vanish?
    Thanks, Francis

It indicates that there's an item on the toolbar that Finder can't find. Right-click the toolbar in a Finder window, and remove the offending item.

  • Switched on my imac 24inch intel based and all I get on screen is a folder with question mark flashing,I had backup on external hard drive but when I try to reinstall it can not find my mac hard drive

Hi when I started my intel based imac this morning all I am getting is a folder with question mark in the middle flashing,I have external hard drive with backup, but when run disc utilities it does not show my mac hard drive.hope someone can help.(it's running mountain lion, well it was)

Try starting up your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
The question mark folder indicates your Mac cannot find a system folder to boot from.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

  • Lost my star(BOOKMARK) in the upper right had corner by the download arrow

OI have lost my bookmark stay ( shortcut icon) in the upper right hand corner by the download arrow and I do not know how to get it back
Also when in my email and I want to open an attachment it goes right to down loads and does not open when I double click on it. It worked yesterday!
    Very frustrated

You've already started [https://support.mozilla.org/questions/995288 a thread about the first issue]. As I said,
The Bookmarks button on the navigation toolbar? Right-click an empty area of the tab bar and choose Customize. Drag it from the customization palette onto the toolbar. You can also click the Restore Default Set button to discard your toolbar customizations.
    * [[Navigation buttons like back, home, bookmarks and reload are missing]]
If you want to be prompted where to save files,
    # Under '''[[Startup, home page and download settings|Options - General]]''', select "Always ask me where to save files"
    # Under '''[[Change what Firefox does when you click on or download a file|Options - Applications]]''', set the file type in question to "Always ask"
Double-clicking isn't used anywhere in the Firefox interface. If you want to open a recently downloaded file, click the Download button on the navigation toolbar, then the file in question. Does that not work?
    * [[Find and manage downloaded files]]

  • Firefox opens in a tiny window and won't resize. Only the upper right had corner displays.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program but I still get the same window that displays the minimize, restore and exit buttons. Exit and minimize work but restore is not available. Resize does not work. I can't get to any controls within the program to make any changes or run a troubleshooter.

Try to rename (or delete) the xulstore.json file in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can also try to delete the current Firefox desktop shortcut and create a new shortcut.

  • How can I delete question mark in left upper corner of thumbnails in organizer

    hum

By making sure that the photo is there where it is supposed to be otherwise Adobe Organizer gets confused.
Did you move the image or delete it?

  • All assets have question marks and no relink window in Muse v 7.2

I upgraded my Adobe Muse to v 7.2.  Now all the assets placed with my previous version of Muse show up in the assets panel of Muse v7.2 with a question mark beside them, but no relink window opens after launching Muse v 7.2 to acknowledge missing asset links or to enable me to relink missing assets.   How do I relink missing asset links in Muse 7.2 without a relink window opening? Is there a relink option or button somewhere in Muse 7.2?  If so, where is it located?

Here's an example of what I assume you're seeing?
Here's what appears if you Control+Click (or right+click) on the red question mark icon.
If this isn't appearing for you, please report what version of Muse and AIR you're using (as reported in the About Adobe Muse dialog). Also, what type of pointing device are you using (i.e. Apple mouse, Wacom tablet, etc.)?
Does Control+click (aka right+click) work for you in any context?

  • Restarted and received a blinking file folder with question mark image.

I left my computer sitting while I was working on homework long enough for the screen saver to come on (I'm not sure exactly how long it was). Earlier in the day, I had to force quit safari and then later it unexpectedly quit several times. While my computer was sitting, it looked like it does when it restarts. I waited until it started to come back up, and instead of coming up to the desktop, it came up with a blinking file folder and question mark. I had not done anything unusual with it, and had not tried to restore it. My dad was working on trying to fix it, and inserted the OS X disk. When the options came up, in the repair feature, the disk could not locate my harddrive. I was wondering if anyone else had encountered this problem, and if so how it was resolved. If anyone had any tips or ideas of things I could try that would be great. I can't really get it to an apple store soon, and I'm a student so my computer is very important to me. Thanks.

    Mornin' John,
I also have an OWC external firewire drive that I tried to install OSX Tiger to but was told that I could not install OSX Tiger on the external drive.
What Format is that Drive? GUID/MacOS Extended? It should work if the right format.
Is there any way to run Disk Warrior from the external hard drive ... to try and rectify this issue, or at least get my data off the dead drive (if it is so)?
From the external only if you can get OSX installed.
What version is it? Do you mot have the CD?
    or from my PowerBook G4
Possibly, with the MaBook in FW Target Mode

If DiskWarrior can't fix it, you might try Data Rescue II...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to).

  • TS3048 I have just purchased a new apple cordless keyboard.  The numeric line of keys along the top are not functioning as they should.  For example I am unable to get a question mark or a forward slash.  I have tried holding down both shift and alt keys.

I have just purchased a new apple cordless keyboard.  The numeric line of keys along the top are not functioning as they should.  For example I am unable to get a question mark or a forward slash.  I have tried holding down both shift and alt keys.

Thanks for prompt response - I tried what you suggested but I'm afraid it has not helped.  It seems as though the line of number keys along the top aren't actually doing what is printed on them.  Some are OK, but the further towards the right hand side of the keyboard you go, the less predicatable it becomes.  So whilst the second key from the left gives me 1 and ! when holding the shift key, by the time I get to the 6 when I press and hold shift I get ^ rather than & symbol which is what is actually printed on the key.  The & symbol is actually on the next key along - and when I hit the key with 8 I get * rather than the ( which is printed on they key but actually located on the next key along.  Things get even more muddled by the time I am over on the right hand side as rather than a question mark (I have had to type the word as I cannot find the symbol anywhere!) I get this _ and the other symbol marked on the key is a comma, but I get - instead.  It is going to drive me mad if every time I want to type something it is a guessing game....!  What do you suggest - question mark

  • When I try to add a question mark, instead I get this ÉÉÉÉ

When I type a question in my email and add the question mark, this is what I get ÉÉÉÉÉ

Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application and you may have changed the keyboard layout by accident via a keyboard shortcut.
    See:
    * http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/The-Language-bar-overview - The Language bar (overview)
It is possible that you have switched the keyboard layout by accident.
    * Make sure that you have the Language bar visible on the Windows Taskbar.
    * You can do that via the right-click context menu of the Taskbar: Toolbars > Language Bar.
    * Check the keyboard language (keyboard layout) setting for the application that has focus via the icon on the Language bar.
    * You need to do that while Firefox has focus because Windows remembers the keyboard layout setting per application.
    * The default keys to rotate the layout is a combination (Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift) that can easily be used in Firefox to activate a menu item.
    * To avoid an unintentional switch, assign a specific key sequence (Alt/Ctrl+Shift+number) to select keyboard layouts and remove the key combination to rotate layouts (Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift)
Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards and Languages > Change keyboards > Advanced key settings > Change key sequence

    - Reset NVRAM
    - Hold t at startup, nothing happens

    Greetz, rutger

Hi, a few days ago I had the same flashing question mark. I had just emptied my trash in iPhoto for the first time, (a few thousand pics), and was browsing in the main photo library when suddenly everything just froze. I left it for awhile, came back and nothing had changed. I switched off using the power button, and when switching on again, the flashing question mark appeared. None of my attempts to reboot worked as it appeared there was no drive to be found.
I have to add that iPhoto would often just quit for apparently no reason, and unexpectedly, having 'encountered a problem'.
I have now been told that my HD is dead, (my iMac only 8 months old), and that i wont be able to retrieve any data (20000 photos that stupidly I hadnt backed up!)
I had too much faith in this product, having only recently converted from Windows, (which was always backed up!), and now feel very disapointed and let down....... this has been a very costly lesson, and one I wont repeat!!
good luck, and I hope you are backed up!
