  • Blinking Question Mark on Blue Screen

I came home from a 5 day weekend away from home and lifted the lid of my macbook. Attempted to choose a user to login as and the spinning wheel wouldn't stop, so I decided to shut down manually. When I turned it back on I got this blue screen with the blinking Question Mark on an image of a file folder accompanied by a clicking sound. Restarting repeatedly gave the same results. So, I got online and looked at the Apple website, followed the instructions to restart holding down various keys. After one restart it gave me a blue screen with only the mouse, however, now I am back to the blinking "?" after another restart.
I do not have my OSX Leopard cd's that came with the computer, so I can't do a restart with them in the computer.... please tell me that this is something simple and that I can get back to all of my files....?
    Thank you.

    Hi Melissa;
No Time Machine backups hourly to an external disk.
I don't know for absolutely sure that it is your hard drive. What they symptoms you gave me are suggesting is that it is the most likely cause for the problem. Your MacBook is not able to find a place from which to boot. That indicate a high likelihood of a failed disk.
If the disk is only corrupt so that your MacBook is no longer able to find the system then a tool like FileSalvage might be able to recover some of your data. If it is truly dead there are recovery services that can recovery the data for big bucks.
Did you purchase AppleCare? That would extend the warranty to three years.

  • Question marks in blue boxes

Hi. I'm having a hard time with images not loading in Mail and Safari -- getting question marks in blue boxes instead. I have tried emptying cache, refreshing page, checking and rechecking my settings, can't even download the image manually. Still no luck. Mac OS 10.4.7, Safari 2.0.4, Airport, cable connection (Comcast). Please help, as many of these images are important for me to see.
    Thanks so much.

Hi crawfordse6, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
    For Safari:
Preferences / Appearance / Check on "Display Images when page opens."
    For Mail:
Preferences / Viewing / Check on "Display remote images in HTML messages."
If that works for you, consider stars as discussed in the bottome portion of the Apple email notification you received. That's how to do "thanks" in these forums.

  • What does it mean when I see the file with the question mark on my screen?

What does it mean when I see a file with a question mark on the screen?

Means no bootable system can be found or required system files are missing or damaged. Reinstall OS X.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Question Marks inside blue square

    Hi all,
I'm trying the Safari beta version for Windows XP. It looks great but I'm experiencing some strange behaviours surfing the web. Even if I installed all suggested plugin, on some pages question marks inside blue square are rendered. Even on these forum pages, the first two columns of post list show question marks. I've the same problem on www.repubblica.it
    Any idea?
    Thanks
    Stefano

    Hi,
as example take this web site: http://www.repubblica.it
As you suggested, I clicked on one these squares and in the address bar I read this:
    http://oas.repubblica.it/RealMedia/ads/click_nx.ads/repubblica.it/nz/home/119055 7573@Top,TopLeft,TopRight,Right,Left,Middle1,Position1,Left1,Left2,Right1,Right2 !Middle1
It seems to deal with some real media application (some ads are missing on the web page) but I've all Real plugins installed...

  • Question mark flashing on screen

MacBook fell off office desk after I tripped on the charging cable and when it turned on again it's just flashing with a question mark on the screen and I am unable to do anything else with it.
Does anyone know what I can do to sort this.
Can access anything an worried I will lose all the files etc on it.
    Need help?

That impact appears to have damaged the internal drive's hardware; if so, only a professional data recovery service can retrieve the files, and those can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

  • Question mark flashing om screen

    question mark flashing on screen.

The question mark means your Mac cannot find a system folder to boot from.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
If the startup disk is not available, the disk is failing or has failed.

  • G4 displays flashing question mark and blue face at start-up

like the title says, my powerbook refuses to go to the desktop and instead gives me a dark screen and in the center you can just make out a folder icon and on the folder icon flashes a question mark and then that picasso-esque blue smiley face. these two images flash sequentially, one after another.
this started happening about three days ago. the day it started, i got up, checked my email, and then shut the computer down. but then i saw the soft light flashing on the closed laptop that tells me that it is still on. so i figured that i hadn't completed the shut down process all the way. i opened the laptop and almost knocked it off the perch it was on. i grabbed it in time to prevent it from falling, but in the process i mashed some buttons with my thumb. when i turned on the computer, it briefly flashed the desktop and then went dark and started flashing the icons as i described above.
i am in japan right now, so getting ahold of apple in the states is somewhat difficult. any amount of help is very much appreciated. i've already tried a full shutdown by taking the battery out and holding down the power button for 5 seconds, as described on the apple website. this didn't work. i'm not sure which version of OS i have, but i'm pretty sure it is at least 10.0. i got the computer last year right as tiger was coming out.

also, the power icon on the power button is not showing any light, and it wasn't showing any light for a day or so before this event happened.

  • After reinstalling mountain lion i got the question mark on the screen

    hi everyone,
after reinstalling mac os x 10.8 from internet recovery, mac restarts itself which is normal.
but when it starts there is a question mark on a folder symbol on the gray screen.
    what should i do?

The question mark appears when your computer can't find any bootable volume to start. This can be because of two reasons:
    1. Your computer has forgotten the startup device.
    2. The hard drive is damaged.
First of all, turn off your computer and turn it on again holding the Option (Alt) key, so you will see all the bootable volumes on the display. Choose the OS X volume and set up OS X as normal. Finally, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose your OS X volume

  • Safari cannot find the server and question mark in blue square

    Hi
I consistently have problems with safari displaying the message safari cannot find the server. The version I have is 5.1.8 and I installed a security update today (23.3.13) hoping it would solve the problem. After refreshing the page a couple of times or restarting safari everything works as normal but this is an ongoing issue. I also have problems with images loading on sites. They appear as blue squares with question marks. I have tried most things people have said on the net but nothing is working.
    Please help!
    Thanks

  • Question Mark in Blue Box with Pictures

I recently have had a problem viewing pictures on myspace. It will show me some but not all and the pictures that don't come up have a Blue Square with a Question Mark in it. I have searched the whole discussions page but none of the answers have helped me yet. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Oh I noticed it in Firefox also. Thank You.

    Hi
When you select the "Mime Settings" button at the bottom of the Advanced panel, another panel opens. Here's an image of it:
Any category with a check mark indicates all items within that category are selected. To see individual items you would click on the small triangle next to the category name.
Any category with a - mark indicates some items are selected in the category
No check would indicate nothing is selected.
Specific to the Miscellaneous Category, note only Quicktime Html is selected. Make sure your panel setting is the same. If you change any setting select "OK" to close the panel. Otherwise, select "cancel".
Then restart Safari and try the site again.

    Hi,
What version of Safari are using? As far as I'm aware Safari 3 left beta a long time ago.
Either way, try changing your DNS settings to those provided by OpenDNS to see if it helps or not:

I try to startup the Mac Mini but the only think that appair on the screen is a white page with in the middle a folder with a flashing question mark.
The Operative Sistem doesn't work:i wanted to try to inser into the CD of OS X and reinstall all but there is just a CD into the Mac but again with botton or with muose clicked ,the CD doens't go out.
    Please Mac's users help me.
    Bye. Alskarez
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4)

The flashing question mark means that the mini is not able to find a copy of MacOS to boot from, which is likely why you inserted the OS X disc.
If the disc that is stuck in the system is the original MacOS install disc that came with the mini, you should be able to boot to it by holding the C key down as the system is starting up. Some non-Apple or wireless keyboards don't allow starttup modifier keys to be used, but if yours is an Apple keyboard it certainly should. If it IS the original install disc in the system and the C key doesn't work, and you're left with the flashing question mark, it sounds like you may have a significant hardware fault which may have caused the mini to fail to see either optical or hard drives.
It may be that in that situation a PMU reset (for PPC minis) or an SMC reset (for Intel models) might restore operability, but if not, then you'll likely need the assistance of an Apple approved service provider.
To reset the PMU in a G4 mini:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
To reset the SMC on an Intel mini:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    -Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.
